We have been taught (correctly) that in order to follow God, in order to please God, in order to live by faith, we MUST know the Bible. But it is possible to have knowledge of what the bible says, and still not be right with God. There is a right way to read the Bible, and that right way produces holiness in our lives.

Tonight, Pastor Mike taught on the importance of truly knowing God — not just being acquainted with Him. He reminded us that relationships grow through time, pursuit, and desire, and our relationship with God is no different. Using Jesus’ words in Luke 18 — “men ought always to pray and not faint” — he challenged us to return to a lifestyle of prayer, both personally and as a church. He emphasized that revival has always been birthed through prayer, unity, and believers who refuse to quit. Pastor Mike walked us through Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane, the authority God has given us on earth, and the biblical promise that the “effective, fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much.” This was a call to awaken, to pray with purpose, and to believe God for revival in our homes, our church, and our nation.

God has more planned for us than simply taking us to Heaven when we die. He could take us now if that's all there is to it. We are here -now- for God's purposes. We are co-laborers with Christ in God's plan of salvation. But we cannot be and do what He has called us to be and do if we are determined to blend with the world that surrounds us. To be holy is to be different.

Perhaps the oldest philosophical challenge to Christianity is "if God is all good and all powerful, why is there evil and suffering in the world?" What does it mean to be righteous? The scriptures clearly show that righteousness is imputed to us. That is, Jesus took on our sin so that He could clothe us with HIs righteousness. But there is another side of righteousness; a way of living that sets us apart. We can go our own way, or we can walk in paths of righteousness.

Can you remember the day you gave your life to Christ? Most of you can. Can you also remember the things that brought you to that point? Most of us, I think, did not respond to the Gospel the first time we heard it. The moment we surrendered our lives to Him was just the final link in a chain of events that brought us to that point. We plant seeds, water the plants, tend to the soil, and finally reap a harvest. The harvest of souls is like that. We must be willing to plant, water, and weed. But we must also be ready to PICK!

We refer to those who have yet to come to Christ -the unconverted- as 'lost'. But just as there are many different callings, giftings, and ministries among believers, lost people are lost in many different ways. We need to be as prepared as possible to address the issues that stand in the way of the lost soul responding to Christ's call.

There are wonderful stories about people all over the world encountering Christ through dreams, angelic visitations, and other extraordinary ways. The fact remains, however, that the VAST majority of people who come to Christ do so because they were introduced to Him by another believer. People can't respond to the Good News until they hear it, and it's our job to make sure they hear it!

Say the word "prosperity" in some churches, and you might raise some eyebrows. Some try to draw a distinction between God's will for the children of Israel and His will for New Covenant believers when it comes to prosperity, since it's so clearly promised in the Old Testament. But it is Jesus who spoke of abundance. And it is the Holy Spirit, through Paul, who spoke of superabundance! Prosperity -financial prosperity- is not our goal as followers of Christ, but we must be liberated from the notion that not only is it not sinful, it is something God desires for us.

We might tend to think that there is a stark division between tithing in the Old Testament vs giving in the New Testament, but the Old Testament actually has more to say about giving than about tithing. This shouldn't surprise us because God doesn't change; He valued and rewarded the generous hearts of the Old Testament children of Abraham, and He values and rewards the generous hearts of Abraham's spiritual children of the new covenant.

Many times we have heard it said that one of the biggest mistakes we can make is to seek God's hand rather than seek His face. When we study the life of faith, we often focus on what we can receive by faith, often with regard to healing and provision. And indeed, these are among the precious promises God has made to His children. But when we look at the heroes of the Bible, those who appear in the "hall of faith" in Hebrews, for example, we see something else. They aren't afforded that status for what they received, but for what they DID. We find, as we continue to explore the life of faith, that faith is a necessary component of obedience.

We know by now (we'd better!) that we can place our faith in everything God says. If God said it, we can believe it, and if we can believe it, we can experience it. So when it comes to praying and believing and receiving, we MUST know what God has indeed said! To stand on the promises of God, we must actually know what He has promised. When someone makes a claim, a promise, or even a threat, our response -that is, how seriously we take those things- is determined by two things primarily: the nature of the statement itself, and our knowledge of the person who says it. This is why the more we understand the character of God, the easier it is to believe Him, and this is the essence of faith. To know Him is to believe Him!

We have an unfortunate tendency to "believe" for things that are actually more of a "wish list". God can certainly speak things to us personally and we can believe Him to fulfill those things. But He has already promised so much in the Bible, and we would absolutely profit from simply identifying those promises and laying hold of them by faith! See a promise, and speak it, but don't limit it to material or physical needs. Look at what God has promised in terms of your character!

There is a right way to pray; an effective way to pray. When we pray as we are instructed to in the word of God, those prayers are answered. But we are to do more than ask God for something when we pray. We are to make declarations in agreement with God's word.

Some people are easier to trust than others. Sometimes, the better you know someone, the easier it is to trust them; sometimes knowing them better makes you trust them less. God's character is such that the more we know Him, the more we trust Him. We can trust Him enough to know that if He says it, He will absolutely do it. And if He said it's done, it is done. All that remains is for us to believe!

As believers in the present-day ministry of the Holy Spirit, embracing all His gifts, sometimes we risk forgetting that the very grounds of our belief, our faith, and our worship is the written word of God. If we are not grounded in the Word, if His Word is not settled in our hearts, we cannot effectively minister to one another or fulfill the great commission. To be grounded in the Word is liberating, empowering, and even exciting!

The Word of God is described in scripture itself in many different ways. It is compared to a seed, to bread, to a sword, and to water, for example. When we talk about the supreme power of the Word of God, we are certainly not talking about merely it's superiority as a work of literature! God's Word is the force by which all things came into existence, by which all things are sustained; and God's word in our mouth still has power to change us and change our lives!

We have been looking for weeks at how Jesus prepared His disciples for ministry. He trained them personally, supernaturally opened their eyes to understand the scriptures, and instructed them to wait for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. On Pentecost, they were filled with the Spirit and were absolutely empowered to be the witnesses He had called them to be. They had everything they needed... or did they? After Jesus rose from the dead, the disciples were still expecting Jesus to ascend to the throne of an earthly kingdom. Instead, Jesus prepared them for His departure and instructed them to wait for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The change that took place in the lives and ministries of the disciples can hardly be overstated. After three years learning at the feet of the Master, they were, in a moment, transformed into bold, effective preachers. In fact, what they received on the day of Pentecost was exactly what Jesus said they would receive: Power. That same power is available to us!

Revival must first come through the church! Is the church slumbering in survival mode? As long as we are trying to just survive or get by, we will lose our perspective to revive. We will live an apathetic existence. We must be revived so that we can reach out to the world with the Gospel, and do it in the power of God.

What kind of church are we? Charismatic? Word of Faith? Non-Denominational? Full Gospel? The danger and weakness of clinging to certain descriptives is that some of them are loaded with presuppositional baggage, and all fall short of truly answering the question "what kind of church are we?" This is true of almost all churches. We make assumptions about what a person believes based on the denomination with which he or she is affiliated. For some people, coming off the busyness and the legitimate preoccupation of celebrating Christmas produces a kind of postpartum depression. After the decorations, presents, company, and feasting, it can be hard to go back to the daily grind. But the word of God has plenty to say about that. We, as believers, can and must go about our daily tasks, even the mundane ones, with a sense of purpose and even joy. Jesus was born, the scripture tells us, "when the fullness of time had come". We may find it easy to criticize those in Judea at the time for not recognizing their Messiah. They longed for the Messiah, but, as we have seen over and over again, they weren't prepared for Him to come as He did. They had some very specific ideas of what the Messiah should be and do, but He turned many of those notions upside down, starting with His very birth. The Apostle John realized that the prosperity of our whole lives, including the health of our bodies, hinges on the condition of our souls. We are commanded to go into all the world and preach the Gospel. But we are also commanded to live our lives in such a way that the love and power of God are evident. People respond, sometimes, to something beyond our words, even if we are bold. What is it about our lives that speaks of the presence of God?

God is unchanging. That is not only a theological truth, but an anchor for us in times of trial. Is God for you? That won't change. Is God the healer? The provider? The protector? He doesn't just manifest these characteristics episodically. These are part of His unchanging nature. Israel was commanded to remember what the Lord had done for them in times past, not just so they could record it accurately, but so they could continue to hope in Him and His plan for them. Same with us! If we remember what the Lord has done, we are strengthening our faith in what He will do.

Have you ever stopped and thought about how much of your self-image is based on what other people think of you? We all like to think that no one's opinion matters at all, but taken to the extreme, that would make us sociopaths. We ALL, to some extent, consider ourselves through the eyes of others. The real question, for Christians, is how much weight we give those other eyes depending on whose eyes they are. Who are we, and how should we think of ourselves, based on how God sees us?

We are, if we pay attention, surrounded by people -some people we know, and other, famous people- who claim to admire Jesus for His example, for His teachings, for the peaceful principles He modeled and instituted. At worst, these views of Christ are used to justify all sorts of sinful lifestyles and habits; at best, they simply miss the central point of Jesus's ministry. We are a week away from celebrating the resurrection; the sine qua non of the Christian faith. But interestingly, the apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians that while he was with them, he was determined to know nothing but Christ, and Him CRUCIFIED. Why the emphasis on the crucifixion and not the resurrection? The answer to that question is at the heart of the difference between true Christianity and a powerless "admiration" of [some of the] teachings of Jesus.
