But the alternative (making a clean breast of things through clear confession) brings both the comfort of Christ and the clarity of God’s holy counsel into our lives. Through our confession, God thus equips us all the more to persevere in purity even as He delivers us out of the folly of stubbornly sustaining our sin.

Every year at Christmastime, while most of us are gearing up for festivities with family & friends, some among us experience tremendous emotional challenges: the first Christmas without a loved one, yet another Christmas alone, or sometimes just the challenge of awaiting an answer from God in the seemingly interminable burden of the present moment. Like the Magi following a star in the dark or Joseph heeding the guidance of God in his dream, the Christmas story reminds us that sometimes—like children waiting to open their gifts on Christmas Day—we need to look to the Father with persevering patient trust while we wait on Him in the present moment of our challenge.

Jesus gives one of His most challenging “Parables of Patience” in Matthew 20’s Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard. In it, a generous landowner surprises his workers by paying those hired near the very end of the day a wage equivalent to those hired at the beginning. Many who hear this story find their patience challenged by its message that “the last shall be first” (v.16). Yet the parable calls us to a kind of patient partnership & trust with & in the Lord that also holds special promise: no matter how long we may have presumed on God’s patience, all the rewards of repentance are ready & waiting to be received by anyone willing to believe & obey Jesus today.

As we come to the conclusion of our sermon series on “The Samuel Story” that takes us through the first half of the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, we’re looking at “The Importance of Saul,” the first King of Israel, asked for by the people in a rebellious turn away from God, yet also appointed by God & anointed by God’s Spirit in order to provide the people a leader led by the Holy Spirit. Yet Saul elected to be led more by his fears, foolishness, & frustration. Thus, the impatience of Saul in following God shows us the importance of Saul, for there’s a little bit of Saul in us all. And the lesson of Saul’s negative example also reinforces the positive principle illustrated in the life of Samuel the Prophet & later David the King: in the eyes of God, obedience is better than sacrifice (1 Sam 15:22). God sees our hearts and looks for sincerity in our submission to Him.

SCRIPTURE TEXT: 1 Samuel 14:1-52 There’s a little bit of Saul in us all. God appointed & anointed that first King of Israel to lead His people in purity of spirit, with the integrity of heart. But Saul used his royal position according to his own terms & agenda. In the prior lesson from 1 Samuel 13, we saw how Saul’s fear of failure in battling the Philistines led him to jump ahead of God, trying to force God to follow Saul’s timeline, by offering the priestly sacrifice himself in violation of God’s command. Next, in 1 Samuel 14, we see how Saul’s impatience begot imprudence, as the effects of his fear produced the fruit of foolishness in his reign & created added risks for his people. To avoid such imprudence ourselves, we can ask God to grant us the patience & wisdom, found in His living word, and we can obey Him.

In the days of Samuel, the prophet-judge of ancient Israel, the Israelites & their pagan neighbors, the Philistines, were consistently at odds. Ostensibly, the Philistines engaged in idolatry while the Israelites worshiped the one true God. Yet God’s glory had departed Israel (1 Sam 4:21-22) because of the people’s lack of fidelity to Him as, in practice, they turned to other gods. Even today, followers of the Lord should examine how different our lives are from the ways of the world in which we live. No matter what the practices of people around us, it is always the right time to return to the Lord with all your heart & experience the victory of the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29), none other than Jesus Christ.

In the days when the priest Samuel was still just a child serving in the Lord’s Tabernacle, “the [prophetic] word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions” (1 Sam 3:1). The near blindness of Samuel’s guardian, Eli the priest, seemed to symbolize the darkness of that age when “everyone did what was right in their own eyes” (Judges 21:25) including Eli’s wicked priestly sons, Hophni & Phineas. But “the lamp of God had not yet gone out” (1 Sam 1:3)—for God’s light shines in the darkness, & the darkness can’t snuff it out (John 1:5). Even as a young boy, Samuel learned that to listen for & to the Lord is to open to His light of wisdom & revelation, igniting & enlightening us as attentive servants of God equipped to minister His word to a darkened world in need.

Through Hannah’s dedication of her child to the Lord all Israel was blessed, for Samuel grew into an anointed prophet & patient priest of the Lord. Samuel’s story begins in the closing era of the Judges, when “everyone did what was right in their own eyes” (Judges 21:25), among corrupt clergy (1 Sam 2:12) who were blind (cf. 1 Sam 3:2) to the best interests of the people & the vision of the Lord. In an age of darkness, God made Samuel a shining light, just as He does for us today (Matt 5:14-16).

Throughout the Bible, several significant women of faith experience challenge in conceiving a child yet receive a promise from God—or call out in an appeal to Him—that they will not only bear a child but also that the child will grow up to be a person of significant faith & influence themselves. One such woman in the Old Testament is Hannah, whose desperate prayer to God finds fulfillment in the birth of Samuel, one of Ancient Israel’s greatest prophets. And the song of praise that Hannah raises to God when her patient faith is rewarded proves to be a precursor for another miracle mother: none other than Mary the mother of Jesus, whose Magnificat to God in Luke chapter one draws inspiration from the patient praise of Hannah in First Samuel chapter two. But the story of Hannah & Samuel—like that of Mary & Jesus—speaks not only to mothers but also truly to all humanity of how God works wonders in the lives of those who wait on Him in faith, even when their situation may feel hopeless.

But the light of His miraculous PURPOSE will permeate our lives if we let Him into our dreams and give Him full rule over our preparations & plans this Christmas season and always.

In Judges 3 we meet three initial judges of Israel: a lionhearted warrior from the "Joshua Generation" (Othniel); a left-handed leader (Ehud); & a "leftover" judge in the last verse of the chapter who stills casts a long legacy in the Scriptures (Shamgar). From these three judges, Pastor Court formulates lessons on "the left hand of leadership," a Biblical concept that true authority, insight, & effectiveness come "'not by might nor by power but by My Spirit,' says the Lord" (Zech 4:6). In the Judges we frequently see God achieve His victories with "left-handed lions," people of faith whose idiosyncrasies reveal God’s perfecting strength (cf. 2 Cor 12:9).

The Name of Jesus, like Christ Jesus Himself, has been highly exalted as “the Name above all [other] names” (Philippians 2:9). Jesus taught His disciples to “ask anything in My Name, and I will do it” (John 14:14). When the Apostle Peter declared healing to a lame man in Acts 3:6, he did it “in the Name of Jesus Christ” and informed the astonished crowd, “It is Jesus' Name & the faith that comes through Him that has completely healed [this man]" (Acts 3:16). Speaking on faith in the Name of Jesus, guest Preacher Emanuel Madeja uses this message to encourage believers to call upon the Name of Jesus with faithful expectation, for there is no other Name by which we are saved (Acts 4:12) & enabled to boldly ask of God (John 16:23).

Romans chapters 9-11 explain God’s faithfulness to & through His people Israel. Even when they did not remain fully faithful to Him (just as no other people have), “It is not as though God’s word had failed” (Rom 9:6) for the promise of God’s righteousness could only ever be received by faith (Rom 4). In Christ “there is no distinction between Jew & Gentile” (Rom 10:12). Yet in chapter 11, God reveals a special purpose at work even in the predominant historical Jewish rejection of the Gospel, whereby Gentile people once outside can be grafted into faith, ultimately enticing a restoration of faith among the Jewish people maintained as a remnant by God’s grace (Rom 11:5). All the branches of this holy tree live by God’s grace through Jesus Christ the righteous root (Rev 5:5; 22:16), verdant vine (John 15:1-5), anointed branch (Isaiah 11:1-2; Zech 3:8; 6:12), living firstfruit (1 Cor 15:20-23), & crowning glory of all life (Rev 2:7; 22:2)

In chapter ten of his letter to the Roman church, the Apostle Paul declares Jesus Christ as "the culmination of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes" (v 4). The Greek term translated "culmination" or "end" can also be rendered as "purpose." God's purpose for His people is made known & available through our Savior Jesus. He is not far removed from us but is as close as God's word & our own hearts (vv. 6-8). If we confess Him with our mouth & believe Him in our heart, we are saved (v. 9).

The Apostle Paul’s powerful letter to the believers of Rome provides a classic example of “good news/bad news.” The bad news is that “all have sinned & fallen short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23), but the Good News is literally “the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes,” a convicting Gospel truth about which Paul was UNASHAMED (Rom 1:16). Today we're also called to live reconciled to God’s righteousness and advancing as unashamed advocates of Christ’s Good News.

When God speaks, His word is immutable, invincible, and sure to come to pass (Psalm 119:89; Isaiah 55:11; 1 Peter 1:25). But as Joseph of the Old Testament & other faithful ones of Scripture learned, sometimes it is necessary for us to hold on to God's word for a time--even a long time--to learn patient perseverance and faithfulness in all seasons. When we do so, we discover again how God is always faithful to His promises--and we also learn from Him how to stand strong in faith despite whatever comes.

The Lord Jesus said that the pathway to destruction is broad & full of travelers, but "narrow is the way that leads to life, & few find it" (Matt 7:13-14). He also made clear that He is that way to life (John 14:6). The PURPOSE of the Lord calls us to pursue His path, running as in a race, with fervent perseverance in order to lay hold of "the prize of the upward call in Christ Jesus" (Phil 3:13-14).

Though in the world we encounter many problems, none can overcome the purpose of God that we find in His faithful promises. Jesus came to testify to the truth of God's Good News (John 18:37) & He has enlisted us as His witnesses (Acts 1:8) to that truth which sets us free (John 8:32) to live according to the purpose and promise of all God's blessings (John 10:10). Whatever problems we're facing today, God has promised that no matter what comes, His PURPOSES will be fulfilled for all those who trust in Him (Romans 8:28). Come find your purpose in God's promise!

We live in a world of problems, & problems often fill our lives, too. Following God's guidance brings peace but can create problems, too, in a world opposed to His ways. But when Jesus faced His pivotal crisis point of the Cross, He posed the question, "Should I ask God to get Me out of this, now that the hour has arrived for Me to face it? No, FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE I have come" (see John 12:27). Whatever we're facing today, God has a PURPOSE for us that includes our problems, His solutions, & His prophetic promise for a glorious future in Him.

God's people annually celebrated the harvest season in ancient Israel by rising together to the holy city on the mountain, Jerusalem. Like the bounty of the land gathered in from the fields, so the people of God were gathered in to the home of their faith. As we anticipate Thanksgiving, let's sing our thanks to God TODAY for all He has done, is doing, and will do, just as His people have done from of old.

The Book of Joshua concludes in chapter 24 with Joshua's farewell address to the nation of Israel as all the people gathered together before the Presence of the Lord. Summarizing God's good works and faithful words, Joshua warns the people that to reject the Lord will bring about disaster but that "as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (v. 15). Joshua's sermon likewise compels us even now to "choose this day" whom we will serve and how we will live.

The last two chapters of the Book of Joshua contain the eponymous leader's concluding remarks to the nation of Israel at the end of his life. In the first of these two sermons, found in chapter 23, Joshua reminds the leaders & elders of Israel that not one of God's promises to His people has failed (v. 14; cf. Josh 21:45). Much as his predecessor Moses did in Deuteronomy, Joshua reiterates the fundamental admonitions from God's Word: obey God (v. 6; cf. Josh. 1:7-8; Deut. 5:32; 28:14); love God (v. 11; cf. Deut. 6:5); and hold fast to God in faith (v. 8). Those who do so shall see their faith flourish in the Lord, while those who turn away from Him ultimately perish (v. 16). The message remains the same through the ages: love, trust, obey, & HOLD FAST TO THE LORD!

In Joshua chapter 22, we find the establishment of an altar named "Witness" as a statement in both stone & spirit. In a time of tribalism & an uncertain future, the nation of ancient Israel found once again that faith in God's faithfulness forms a bond to bridge all borders. We'll gain lessons for our lives today from this passage, as we like living stones (1 Pet 2:5) carry on witnessing for Christ (Acts 1:8) in a ruptured world.

We engage one of the great Divine Encounters of the Scriptures in this lesson from Joshua chapter five, in which Joshua comes face to face with the Commander of the Armies of Heaven, who makes Joshua aware that he is "standing on holy ground." In making application to our lives as believers today, we recognize an ongoing call as a "Joshua Generation" of Christians to make consecration, communion, and calling central aspects of our faith and daily focus.

As "The Joshua Generation" crosses the Jordan in chapters three & four of the Book of Joshua, at last making their first entrance into the Promised Land to which God has called them, they demonstrate for modern believers the vitality of consecration, participation, and activation in, with, and through the powerful Word of God's promise and the transformative reality of His Presence. Just as the Lord calls them to memorialize His great works on their behalf, stacking stones as an altar of memory and a tower of teaching for generations to come, so we also remember not only what God has done for them, but also what He does for all who trust in Him even unto today!

In response to her faith, the Israelites promise protection to Rahab & her family so long as a scarlet rope hangs in their window, an outward sign of inner loyalty to their covenant made with God. Many metaphors and applications for modern people live within this passage, which promises a certain scarlet hope for all who cling to the cord of the Christ, our Savior!

Continuing in our in-depth study of the Fruit of the Holy Spirit in Galatians chapter five, we focus on GENTLENESS, a spiritual fruit that demonstrates the qualities of Christ Jesus "who, though He was...God, did not consider equality with God to be something grasped but instead emptied Himself [of His divine privileges] and took upon Himself the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of humanity [&] humbled Himself to the point of death" (Philippians 2:6-8). Jesus is notable for being "GENTLE and humble in heart" (Matthew 11:29). Therefore, we aim for this same gentleness as Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5), taking His yoke of gentleness upon ourselves to learn from Him (Matthew 11:29a), for Jesus was very earnest when He promised that "the gentle shall inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5).
