Sometimes an artist will have an idea or concept that they want to pursue to its conclusion. In many instances these ideas will get shot down prior to completion by record labels, managers, bandmates, or just a competing voice in their head telling them their idea is dumb….
On occasion though these ideas slip through the cracks and get to see the light of day. These ideas and albums are trailblazers that bring something completely new to the world. Sometimes they are recognized in their time, but often these albums take time for the masses to understand how truly groundbreaking they are. Artists have found many reasons over the years to name-drop famous people. Most commonly, it's a sign of praise, as they effectively pay tribute to someone they respect and admire. Other times, a name-drop can stoke controversy, igniting or further fueling a fight. Then there are the cases where a name-check is used for creative purposes, helping to establish a song's characters or time period. Well on today’s show we are gonna examine several instances and try to better understand how they serve the song or the artist's motives.

V. Shayne Frederick is a vocalist and pianist with performances spanning decades. He’s electrified TEDx, NPR, and stages nationally. WXPN says “His stunning baritone effortlessly soars” and Broad Street Review says he is “one of the region’s busiest and best jazz singers.” Aside from performing, his compositions are featured in commercials and film, including a documentary garnering critical acclaim in the film fest circuit. He is also a faculty member of the University of the Arts, and a current elect to the Governor’s Board of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Recording Academy. He was nominated for a Pew Center for Arts & Heritage Fellowship in 2021.

In music, modulation is the change from one tonality or tonal center to another. It is a tool composers and songwriters use, in many cases, to add interest or excitement to a song.
The 18th century composer Charles-Henri Blainville says “Modulation is the essential part of the art. Without it there is little music, for a piece derives its true beauty not from the large number of fixed modes which it embraces but rather from the subtle fabric of its modulation.”

He’s also made 5 awesome and intricately musical albums with his band Muscle Tough, with a sound that is a heavily improvised blend of modal jazz, funk, and psychedelia. And as a solo artist he’s put out 5 stellar solo albums with his latest “Where Does the Go?” being released in 2020.

The first Earth Day was held in 1970 and on April 22nd we’ll be celebrating the 52nd anniversary of this important world holiday. From listening to all our previous podcasts you might assume that we are world renowned scientists with titles such as Dr. Podiatrist and Metta…. February 25th, 1964. On this date 58 years ago, one of the most anticipated, watched and controversial fights in sports history took place. That’s the date when Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, beat Sonny Liston by technical knockout when he failed to answer the bell for the seventh round. Sensing that he had made history, he quickly ran to the ropes and repeatedly yelled "I'm the greatest!" and "I shook up the world."
Not only was that true, but in the larger context of what was happening in 1964 that was an even bolder statement than it seems on the surface - Beatlemania had just begun in February 1964 with their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, President Kennedy had just been assassinated in November 1963, Motown was just starting to heat up the charts with their hits, the civil rights era was in full bloom, and the 1964 presidential election was making everyone crazy.
On today’s episode we are going to do something special as we help give everyone a musical snapshot of what was going on in the world in 1964. And we are also going to take this one step further by sharing with you something we’ve been working on for the past 2 years.
Ali’s utter confidence in 1964 to think he could do the absolutely unthinkable has inspired us to capture that sentiment in a song, our debut single “Rumble Young Man”, which we’ll be sharing with you at the end of the episode. There is no post-Christmas letdown in New Orleans. That's because on January 6th the final day of Christmas, also known as twelfth night, the official start of Carnival season begins and goes till the day before Ash Wednesday or the first day of Lent. On the day before Ash Wednesday New Orleans descends into a chaotic flurry of crowds and colorful masks all in celebration of Mardi Gras (the last day of the Carnival celebration) and also known as "Fat Tuesday."
Music is a key component to the carnival season and to New Orleans life in general and there have been many artists throughout the years that have lifted up the Mardi Gras spirit in their music and on today’s show in honor of Mardi Gras Day on March 1st this year, we are (figuratively) going to down to New Orleans to give you our favorite Mardi Gras inspired songs.

In general, the art that we love means something to us. It makes us feel happy, sad, it comforts us, it gets us riled up, it gives us goosebumps, it challenges us, shows us something new about ourselves…. It means something to us.
When you listen to "Blue in Green" or "Flamenco Sketches" by Miles Davis, they give you that feeling of calm and love. Or when you hear Kanye West’s "We Major," you immediately get pumped up and ready to attack your day. Or on November 1st, when you hear the first notes of Darlene Love’s "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. That is the power of amazing art…. But what about the people that make the art? Do they have a stake in giving you those nice feelings? Should our feelings be transferred to them as the creators of the art we love?
Yes… No… Maybe… Well, the only thing to be sure of is that it’s definitely complicated. Fortunately, on today’s show we’ll be digging deep into these questions as we discuss the concept of Art vs. The Artist. And, with a topic this heavy we just had to bring on an expert guest to help us untangle everything.

Tom Moon has been writing about pop, rock, jazz, blues, hip-hop and the music of the world since 1983. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller 1000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die, and a contributor to other books including The Final Four of Everything. From 1988 until 2004 he served as music critic at the Philadelphia Inquirer and his work has appeared in Rolling Stone, GQ, Blender, Spin, Vibe, Harp and many other publications. Since 1996 he has contributed to NPR's All Things Considered and he’s also won several awards, including two ASCAP-Deems Taylor Music Journalism awards. Beyond his bonafides as a music journalist he’s also an accomplished saxophonist whose professional credits include several tours with the Maynard Ferguson orchestra and recently he launched EchoLocator which is a newsletter devoted to nearly vanished sounds, spirits, ideas and recordings.

As many of our listeners out there know, the Genesis album “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” is one of the albums that comes up as a favorite of ours time and time again. Well, the drummer on that amazing album has a birthday coming up on January 30th. Yes, Phill Collins will be 71 and he’s had an amazing career as the lead singer and drummer of Genesis and as a solo act. But perhaps his most enduring legacy …..(beyond the gated reverb drum sound which dominated the 80’s and changed music forever).....he probably has the single most recognizable drum fill in the history of music which came at the 3:40 mark of his song “In The Air Tonite.”

The saxophone, a single-reed woodwind instrument usually made of brass, was designed around 1840 by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian instrument maker, flutist, and clarinetist. As an outgrowth of his work improving the bass clarinet, Sax began developing an instrument with the projection of a brass instrument and the agility of a woodwind.
Initially created for classical music, the use of the sax expanded exponentially with the introduction of jazz becoming very popular across the US. As the jazz age died down, the sax took on new roles in popular music with folks like Clarence Clemons, Grover Washington Jr, Phil Woods, Ronnie Ross, and David Bowie using it in a variety of new styles and ways.

The backbone of so much music we know and love is made up of chords and chord progressions. In music, a chord is any harmonic set of frequencies consisting of multiple notes (also called "pitches") that are heard at the same time. And a chord progression is a series of chords played one after the other.
A common debate among songwriters out there is the question of … how many chords are needed when writing a great song? Some fall on the spectrum of more is better - saying that more chords provide a wider palette to draw upon when conveying emotion to the listener, while others say that having too many chords in a song detracts from the lyrical impact and emotional delivery of the song.
Well on today’s show we are going to examine, and in some instances, try to make the case for the less-is-more side of this debate as we discuss our favorite songs with 3 chords of less!
Today we are joined by singer songwriter Paul Kleinert from PK and the In-Betweens. Paul is a lifelong resident of the Lehigh Valley and kicked around the greater Philadelphia music scene during the 90s with his original band Waiting for Rain until the band dissolved in 2000. Other than a few open mics and a reunion show with his old band, Paul has remained off the stage and under the radar focusing his creative talent and energy on his career as a high school teacher. He returned to the studio in 2019 with Philly Producer and Engineer Brian Bricklin at the helm. Backed in the studio by a team of Philadelphia all-stars including Erik Johnson and Kevin Hanson of Huffamoose, Brendan McGeehan, Howie Gordon and Joanna Pacitti, Paul released the EP “A Lifetime of Almost” in early 2020. PK is currently finishing his 2nd EP with Brian and working on a separate song cycle with Tyler Skye at Monoplane Recording Studio.

The term "power pop" was coined by the Who's Pete Townshend in 1967 to describe their style of music. However, the term became more widely identified with subsequent artists from the 1970s who sought to revive Beatles-style pop. AllMusic describes the style as "a cross between the crunching hard rock of the Who and the sweet melodicism of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, with the ringing guitars of the Byrds thrown in for good measure". The sound of the genre became more established thanks to early 1970s hits by Badfinger, the Raspberries, and Todd Rundgren. Subsequent artists occasionally drew from developments such as new wave, punk, glam rock, pub rock, college rock, and neo-psychedelia. Special Guest: John Faye
As a musician of Korean-Irish descent, Faye was one of the only mixed-race Asian Americans to sign a major label recording contract in the 90’s heyday of alternative rock. As the lead singer and songwriter for the Caulfields, he released two albums on A&M Records, had a modern rock radio hit in the US and Australia (“Devil’s Diary”), had song placements in major films and television shows through a publishing deal with Warner-Chappell, and toured nationally and internationally.
At the end of 2017, with over three decades in the music business under his belt, Philly rock veteran John Faye decided to take a new direction in his creative life and went on a self-imposed hiatus from recording and performing to look back on his life and career in his upcoming memoir, tentatively titled The Yin and the Yang of it All: Memories from the Cusp, as told by a Mixed-Up, Mixed-Race Kid.
In his memoir, Faye shares his unusual perspectives on identity, race, and fame, and also recounts brushes with the likes of KKK grand wizard David Duke, TV-host Tom Bergeron, Apollonia (from Purple Rain), and numerous well-known rock bands from the 90’s. Ultimately, it is the story of finding his voice and his tribe in the world of rock and roll, with his strong and enigmatic mother as his emotional anchor.
With eleven full-length studio albums, two live albums, a B-sides record, three EP’s, a DVD, and a handful of digital singles to his credit, John Faye has amassed an impressive musical resume.

Prince Rogers Nelson was born on June 7, 1958 and unfortunately passed way too soon on April 21, 2016. In his short 57 years, he became one of the most unstoppable forces in music history…. Get this….There is only one dude who could ride on the back of his bodyguard to the stage (which is nuts) AND THEN proceed to smoke both Michael Jackson and James Brown (check it out on youtube)... He also is the dude who had one of the most iconic moments EVER when he played his song Purple Rain IN THE RAIN at the Superbowl…. And He’s also the dude that changed his name to a weird sign and we still loved his music! Did the band prop up the artist or did the artist prop up the band? For many of the artists that go solo from popular bands or groups, that is the big question. In many instances it can be clearly seen that the band was where the real action and interest lie - such as with The Rolling Stones. The 10’s? The Teens? …. I’m not sure what the last decade is called, but I know there was some pretty good music happening. We got the massive albums 21 and 25 from Adele, Kendrick Lamar blew up with Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, To Pimp a Butterfly, and DAMN. and the usual suspects of Beyonce, Lada Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Drake also released huge albums.
Those artists and their albums received lots of attention over the past decade, but for weirdos like us those artists didn’t quite hit the sweet spot. Our favorite albums of the past decade can be found, in most instances, off the beaten path by well established artists leaving their final legacies and also by artists who have yet to achieve the massive fame that they so deserve.

Progressive rock, also known as “prog rock”, joined the musical fray in the late 1960’s as a new offshoot from the waning psychedelic scene. The music was based around elaborate compositions, virtuosic instrumentation, and lyrics that were more akin to a fantasy novel. Some would frame it as a rock and roll interpretation of classical music, but only in the idea of songs as movements, and not so much from musical ideas from the classical era. While prog rock generally challenges the listener to actively stay engaged. There has been no shortage of very thorough and devout fans to the genre. And specifically to their favorite bands such as Yes, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Genesis, and King Crimson. However, on the flipside, over the years the critics and the wider music listening audience hasn’t embraced prog rock quite the same as the superfans of the genre. These critics label it as pretentious and overindulgent, and barring a few artists breaking through, most prog acts have lived perpetual existences as cult bands.

David is an amazing musician and prolific songwriter from Philadelphia. His compositions reflect a broad array of styles, from pop and rock songwriting, to classical, to South Indian classical music and more. In the summer of 2012 Dave released his debut album, “Davey Cope & The English Breakfast: A Proper Record”. Since then, Dave has expanded his output, writing music for plays, television and film. He’s had many fantastic projects over the years including LeBon LeBon, Fantasy Square Garden, and Dave Cope and the Sass. And the pandemic hasn’t slowed him down either, releasing two new albums in the past couple months based on themes of life during the pandemic, in addition to some classical music as well!

A hit song…. Is a hit song. And no one can take that away from you. However, a hit song doesn’t necessarily lead to another hit song, or a career for that matter. When this happens to an artist, they get placed in the dreaded category of “one-hit wonder.” Over the years we’ve seen many one-hit wonder lists or artist profiles on VH1 or TV One and, for me, they all feel sad. If someone is 22 and has a hit song, but doesn’t have another one…. Was that the pinnacle for them? Is it all down hill at 22?
Well, in some instances... yes. But in other instances these one-hit wonders have gone on to have long careers in music and also in other industries. Either way though, whether an artist has a second hit or not, for one moment they were at the top and no one can take that away from them. These are the songs we'll talk about today, as we discuss our favorite one-hit wonders.

In a lot of ways, technology helped many 80’s pop stars explode. From the Gated Reverb drum sound, to the Yamaha DX7 keyboard synthesizer, to the Roland TR-808 drum machine - this new technology gave the 80’s such a huge and identifiable sound. Coupled with the rise and popularity of music videos, these sounds became inescapable and it seemed that it was a requirement for any artist of the time to incorporate these sounds… sometimes for the worse.
However, some artists of the era took these new tools and really did amazing things with them, creating memorable albums that are loved well beyond the 80’s bubble where they became popular.
