Just mention the name CHRIS JASPER and you already know! Widely known for his being a member of the '3+3' ISLEYS, his incredible keyboard virtuosity and musicianship stand alone. His songwriting, arranging and production chops are masterful. In just about all his recordings with The Isleys, there is a keyboard line or chord progression that is still memorable and iconic to this very day. For example, if I said 'For The Love Of You,' I know you'll start out humming that beginning synth line. And that quintessential song is just one of many that incorporates the infamous CHRIS JASPER/Isley's sound. Mr. Jasper has quite a few award winning solo projects under his belt as well through his Gold City Records label. A Julliard graduate, Mr. Jasper knows all too well, that while the music business can be fun and rewarding, it is still a business! A fact most tend to forget. And the steps he was willing to take, the things he was willing to learn to insure his success are the reasons Mr. Jasper remains a force in the industry today. From the moment I met Tommy DeBarge, I was immediately drawn in. Tommy had such an engaging spirit. Everybody loved Tommy. And Tommy loved everybody. In fact, he always said so. 'I love everybody, man!' He greeted complete strangers as though he'd known them for years. Tommy was indeed, EVERYBODY’S brother. I am honored to have known Tommy and to have worked with him. SWITCH brought us together and as a result, we are forever brothers. I'd lost touch with Tommy over the the past few years. Time, distance, circumstances, life. We had such a great time the last time we were together. I missed him in life and now I will miss him in death. In a special segment of THE PLAYGROUND, I asked a few special friends to share their thoughts and memories of the late ..... and definitely great TOMMY DEBARGE! Sadly, we recently lost Mary Wilson, one of the original and founding members of The Supremes. Though Ms. Wilson had long since left the group, that didn't stop Scherrie Payne, Susaye Green, and Joyce Vincent, collectively known as THE FORMER LADIES OF THE SUPREMES from carrying on. For years, FLOS have performed the hits of The Supremes to packed houses all over the world continuing in The Supremes tradition of class, beauty, glamour and style. And each one of these ladies is a star in her own right with a number of credits to their individual names. During SWITCH'S short stint at Total Experience Records which produced our last studio LP ("Am I Still Your Boyfriend?", 1985), I had the pleasure of meeting label mate and newly signed recording artist (AND another fellow Buckeye from Cincinnati, Ohio), PENNY FORD. I remember being amazed by her powerful voice! Not only is Penny a monster vocalist, she is also a super talented multi-instrumentalist. It would be no surprise to me when in a few short years, she would gain international stardom as lead vocalist for the hugely successful dance group, SNAP! who had the mega-hit "The Power". Recently, my producer THERESA GOSS produced a virtual summit aptly titled "Xtreme Biz Summit" in which she featured guest speakers who told the stories of how they, as she put it, "pulled up their bootstraps and got to work." Vocalist KEVIN DORSEY is definitely one of those artists who did just that. He knew what he had to do....and got to it! His work with such greats as QUINCY JONES and MICHAEL JACKSON are only the beginning of Kevin's illustrious career. Kevin's unmistakable baritone voice can shake a room to its core. With her wide ranging and silky smooth voice, singer-songwriter and producer LYNN DAVIS knew at a very early age what she wanted to do, and she had the drive and the focus to accomplish her goals. And it paid off from the start. She was already gaining major successes before she was hired, at 18 years of age, to be featured vocalist on record and on tour with jazz legend and keyboard master, GEORGE DUKE. At just the mention of smooth jazz pioneers SPYRO GYRA, you know it's gonna be good. Correction, amazing! No doubt, a big part of their success is keyboard virtuoso and co-leader, Tom Schuman. He started with them at their very beginning and at the ripe senior age of sixteen! Tom's journey was not without its bumps and bruises. Not only was he keyboardist and music director for Ms. Jackson but he was also her opening act, with mega hits of his own ('Turned Away', and 'Games' with its iconic groove, just to name a couple). Currently, he is keyboardist and music director for the legendary Lionel Richie. These are just two of the many greats Chuckii Booker has had the opportunity to share the stage and studio with.
