My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Gary May, Founder and President at IM@CS.
Gary is a veteran automotive digital marketer and one of the most popular conference presenters in the industry. Gary has presented at virtually every major automotive digital marketing conference including NADA, Innovative Dealer Summit, Driving Sales, and Digital Dealer.
Gary is a tough guy to put in a box. He’s not specifically only an SEO or only a PPC marketer. He’s got a lot of skills. He understands the pain points for auto dealers and is able to use his skills to help with whatever issue they are having.
One of the biggest issues that Gary has noticed is the inaccuracy of measuring the data that dealerships collect. Gary is on a quest to improve the ways dealerships measure their campaigns and increase ROI simply by measuring programs correctly.
This is a crazy couple of years for automotive digital marketers. First, we had the COVID pandemic and then a chip shortage lead to inventory shortages at dealerships all across the country. Gary is a perfect guest to talk to about all the craziness in automotive digital marketing.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Gary May. We’ll talk about holding a digital marketing vendor accountable, we’ll talk about how the chip shortage has changed the way auto dealerships are marketing themselves, and we’ll spend a little time talking about Gary’s experience as a competitive cyclist.

My guests on this week’s episode of Suds & Search are Dave Spannhake and Dane Saville from Reunion Marketing.
Reunion Marketing is an automotive digital marketing agency with specialists in SEO, PPC, and a suite of customized services for dealerships. Dave and Dane both worked together at a large dealer group. In 2015, Dave and Dane were part of a group that founded Reunion Marketing, which has grown steadily since its inception.
Dave is a frequent presenter at major automotive digital marketing conferences including CIADA, Digital Dealer, Kain Automotive Conference, and Driving Sales. Dave is also a frequent columnist and blogger. I’m going to start our conversation by talking about a recent blog post he wrote titled, “For Reunion Marketing, Change Has Always Been the New Normal.”
Dane is a popular podcaster and the host of KPI Cafe. He has a really well-rounded suite of skills and has worked in automotive digital marketing for over 10 years.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Dave Spannhake and Dane Saville. We’ll chat about how the chip shortage has impacted digital marketing for car dealers, we’ll talk about why they keep a low client-to-consultant ratio, and we’ll talk about the award Reunion won for the industry’s Most Valuable Insight competition.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Zeph Snapp, CEO and Founder at Altura Interactive.
Zeph is a veteran digital marketer and an in-demand conference presenter. A few places you might’ve heard him speak include MozCon, Content Marketing World, and Pubcon.
He’s also an excellent writer. If you like this interview check out Zeph’s column at Search Engine Journal.
Altura offers a really interesting service. They provide Spanish digital marketing to international brands. Usually, these brands are growing from the United States into Latin America and need digital marketing expertise along the way.
I can tell you from experience that it’s hard enough to know SEO in one language. Zeph’s agency has a bigger burden. They have to be good at SEO, which is interesting enough, but they also have to overcome communication challenges with stakeholders speaking different languages, they have to be mindful of a zillion little regional language nuances when creating and optimizing content, and there are SEO implications with each decision that they make.
It’s a fascinating topic and Zeph is an entertaining and engaging guest to take us through it all.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Zeph Snapp. We’ll talk about how to avoid disaster when launching a website internationally, he’ll explain the difference between translation and transcreation, and we’ll spend a little time talking about MozCon shenanigans.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Jake Bohall, Co-founder of Hive Digital.
Jake is a veteran digital marketer, serial entrepreneur, and popular conference presenter. In 2020, Jake’s agency Hive Digital won two awards at the US Search Awards. They won the award for Best Small SEO Agency and Best SEO Campaign.
I heard Jake speak at Pubcon last spring and I’ll start our conversation talking about his presentation which was about sustainable SEO. I will also ask him about its opposite to get a sense of what unsustainable SEO looks like.
Jake lives near Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, a talent-rich area of the country for digital marketers. Last June, Russ Jones passed away unexpectedly and the loss was especially devastating for digital marketers in the Raleigh-Durham area. I’ll talk to Jake about his friend and collaborator Russ Jones during this episode.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Jake Bohall. We’ll talk about how to do link building in a sustainable way, we’ll chat about a shift he’s noticed in content marketing from being product-focused to more customer-focused, and I’ll ask him about a project he did to clean up about 5 million UGC tags from one site.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Aaron Levy, Vice President of Paid Search at Tinuiti.
Aaron is one of the most popular and influential PPC experts in the world. He is a mainstay on PPC Hero’s list of the top 25 PPC experts in the world. He’s a talented presenter who has spoken at numerous conferences including HeroConf, SMX, the Utah DMC Conference, and the Paid Search Association conference.
Aaron’s also a terrific blogger who’s been published in Search Engine Journal and Search Engine Land. He frequently appears on podcasts and webinars.
I caught up with Aaron after a really interesting year for PPC. There were changes to keyword match types and default ad types and changes at Google and Facebook that impacted audience targeting. Frankly, it was a good time to catch up with someone with Aaron’s breadth of knowledge to talk about it all.
Aaron manages a huge team at Tinuiti. They work with some of the biggest brands in the world on some of the most complex PPC campaigns anyone can imagine. I’m going to ask Aaron about how to manage a large team.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Aaron Levy. We’ll talk about why you should pay for your brand terms, we’ll talk about where PPC is headed, and I’ll chat a little bit about how advertiser behavior will change coming out of COVID.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Ryan Jones, Vice President of SEO at Razorfish. Ryan is a computer programmer turned digital marketer. In his role at Razorfish, Ryan oversees an international SEO team running campaigns for some of the largest brands in the world.
He is also a popular conference presenter. A shortlist of the conferences Ryan has presented at includes Pubcon, SMX, State of Search, and UnGagged.
I begin our conversation talking about his presentation at Pubcon Florida last Spring. The speech was based on research Ryan did with Eric Enge in partnership with BrightEdge. The presentation starts by showing the myriad ways that enhanced search features are expanding. For SEO professionals who look at SERPs every day, the pace of change can be dizzying.
So if the SERP is fundamentally changing in unpredictable ways, how should SEOs adjust the way we measure rankings or search position? How does this impact tasks like keyword research? I’m going to ask Ryan these questions and more.
One thing I love about Ryan is that he lives in my hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Towards the end of our interview, we get a chance to chat about Detroit-style pizza, drinking in Canada as teenagers, and why it’s impossible to be born and raised in south Detroit.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Ryan Jones. We’ll chat about his new ngram tool SEOdataviz.com, we’ll talk about why the future of search is verbs, and we’ll spend a little time talking about WTFSEO, the most hilarious Twitter parody account I follow.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Michelle Robbins, Senior Director for Data and Analytics at Clearlink. Michelle is a veteran digital marketer, product developer, software engineer, and marketing technology executive.
Prior to joining the team at Clearlink, Michelle held leadership positions at Aimclear and Third Door Media, the publisher of Search Engine Land, Marketing Land, and the company that puts on all the SMX events.
This episode is a departure from some of the typical SEO and PPC topics we cover each week on Suds & Search.
I heard Michelle give an excellent presentation with a potentially controversial title – “Data is a lie.” Michelle makes a persuasive argument that much of the data digital marketers use to make strategic decisions are flawed. Facebook data, search console data, data in Google Analytics…it all has flaws.
And it’s not just the data we are given from big technology companies. As marketers, we bring our own biases to the table when we’re examining data. Marketers themselves create data problems with selection bias, response bias, and feedback loops.
The end result is that instead of using data to make empirical, objective decisions, marketers are often looking at data that has been badly compromised.
What should we do to clean up our data? Is the effort to get better data hopeless?
I’ll get answers to these questions and many others during this episode.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Michelle Robbins. We’ll talk about how to interrogate your data, an interesting approach she calls Agile Data Product Development, and we’ll spend a little bit of time talking about Star Trek fandom.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Alex Alexakis, Founder of PixelChefs.
There’s a recurring topic that comes up on industry blogs and on SEO Twitter – the relationship between SEOs and web developers. Long story short, it’s often a challenging relationship to navigate. SEOs complain that their changes never get implemented. Web developers complain that SEOs are annoying. It’s often a fraught relationship but both pieces have to work in order for a client to experience any kind of success.
Alex’s agency specializes in SEO-focused web design.
In full disclosure, PixelChefs is SearchLab’s preferred agency to work with on website projects. We’ve done dozens of projects together and at least as of this show airing, we’ve never had one of those turf battles. The projects have always gone well.
Alex and his team won two web design awards from the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts at this year’s w3 Awards. He has spoken at industry conferences like Ungagged and CMS Summit. He also frequently appears on podcasts and webinars.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Alex Alexakis. We’ll talk about the SEO advantages of building websites in WordPress, we’ll chat a little about how to manage scope creep in a website project, and I’ll finish up talking to him about 80s toys and scooter riding in LA.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Bartosz Goralewicz, CEO at Onely.
Bartosz is an in-demand conference presenter and a frequent guest on industry podcasts and webinars. He is considered one of the top technical SEOs in the world. He’s particularly knowledgeable about Javascript SEO.
A few places you might’ve heard Bartosz present include, Ungagged, InOrbit, Brighton SEO, Search Love, and all the different SMX events.
For a really good deep dive into his areas of expertise, check out some of the webinars he’s done for SEMrush. They are consistently excellent.
I caught up with Bartosz during an interesting time for Technical SEOs. Core Web Vitals has captured the attention of SEOs all over the world. I’m going to start our conversation by asking him a series of questions about Core Web Vitals and how he and his team at Onely approach the concept.
I’m also going to ask Bartosz about Javascript. Simply put, Javascript and SEO don’t play together well. How does an expert like Bartosz evaluate Javascript for SEO?
What Javascript considerations should website owners and SEOs be concerned about? I’m going to ask Bartosz those questions and more.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Bartosz Goralewicz. We’ll chat about how significant a change Core Web Vitals was, we’ll chat Javascript SEO, and we’ll spend a little time talking about conference hijinx with Greg Gifford.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Cindy Krum, CEO at MobileMoxie. Cindy has spoken at virtually every major digital marketing event I can think of including Mozcon, Pubcon, Brighton SEO, and all the different SMX events.
I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Cindy for some time because she’s been my go-to resource for all matters related to mobile SEO. Cindy is a must-follow on Twitter at the handle @suzzicks for instant reaction to all the latest news and updates on Mobile SEO.
One of, if not the biggest updates started in the summer of 2019. Google began to predominantly use the mobile version of a website for indexing and ranking. Referred to as “mobile-first indexing” this had serious ramifications for websites who hadn’t made their mobile experience a priority.
Perhaps no one in SEO knows more about this update than Cindy. I’m going to start our conversation talking about mobile-first indexing and specifically how to have better conversations with our clients about mobile SEO.
Cindy’s company Mobile Moxie has created several excellent tools designed for mobile SEO. We’ll talk about two of her tools – the SERPerator and the Page-oscope tool during this conversation. You can sign up for a 7 day free trial on the MobileMoxie website.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Garrett Mehrguth, CEO of Directive. Garrett is an in-demand conference speaker. A few places you may have heard him present include State of Search, Digital Summit, Share16, and SMX West.
Garrett is an excellent podcaster and frequent podcast guest. After this episode, check out Garrett’s impressive podcast SaaS Marketing Makeover.
This was an episode that I thought would go one way and ended up going in a totally different direction. I was struck by Garrett’s perspective on entrepreneurship and the business side of agency life.
Garrett seemed to have an almost endless amount of tips about how to pay employees, how to develop internal culture, and how to grow and scale an agency. These are the same tips and strategies he’s used to build Directive to well over 100 employees.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Andrew Optimisey, SEO Consultant and Founder of Optimisey, an SEO Consultancy located in Cambridge. Andrew is a digital marketing veteran with almost two decades of experience. He is the host of a series of popular free meet-ups.
Andrew is also a popular podcast guest, a webinar host, and a must-follow on social media. He appears on many “best-of” lists including Search Engine Journal’s list of the Top SEO Experts You Should be Following.
One of my favorite ways to learn SEO or digital marketing generally is to attend local meet-ups. Meet-ups are also a great way to make friends and have fun.
Andrew has done an amazing job building out a community in Cambridge and his reputation for hosting top-flight meet-ups is recognized all over the SEO world.
We filmed this episode almost two years into the COVID pandemic and the state of local meet-ups is in flux. I wanted to chat with Andrew about what the future holds for his meet-ups and why the format works so well.
Andrew also detests spammy or snake oil SEO practitioners. I’m going to chat with him about how pervasive the issue is and what to be on the lookout for.

He is sought after for his expertise in content marketing. Kane has spoken at MozCon, Engage, State of Search, LaunchCon, and many other places.
I really like the value prop for his company Content Harmony.
Content Harmony started as an agency in 2012 and worked with nearly 200 clients on content writing and SEO. Over time, Kane realized that a major differentiator for their agency was the quality of content briefs.
Kane fundamentally shifted from an agency model and created software and workflows for agencies and writers to create content briefs.
In my experience, creating content briefs is an important but often rushed process that can make or break a successful content marketing campaign. Content Harmony helps agencies and writers streamline the process of making content briefs with workflows and automation.
The tool they’ve created has an almost hilarious number of testimonials from a who’s who of the top SEOs in the industry.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Sean V. Bradley, President of Dealer Synergy.
Sean is one of the most popular and sought-after names in the automotive industry. He is an in-demand conference presenter and a frequent keynote speaker. He’s presented at nearly every major automotive conference including NADA, Internet Battle Plan, NAMAD, and Digital Dealer.
Sean and his company have won numerous awards including the Platinum Dealers Choice Award for BEST Internet Sales Training Company in The United States.
Sean’s backstory is fascinating. Sean grew up in poverty and a world of violence.
As a teenager, he got caught up in a life of gangs, drugs, and ultimately prison before completely turning his life around and becoming a multi-millionaire and one of the most successful car salesmen and sales trainers in the world.
His incredible life story was recently featured in the Vice Series, “I was a Teenage Felon.” This episode of Suds & Search is a bit of a departure from our usual topics of SEO, PPC, and digital marketing. Instead, we’ll have more of a human discussion about the real-life story of a born hustler and sales and marketing savant.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Sean V. Bradley. My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Barry Schwartz, CEO of RustyBrick, Editor of Search Engine Roundtable, and News Editor at Search Engine Land.
Barry is one of the most influential and important voices in the industry. For the better part of two decades, Barry Schwartz has been THE go-to resource for daily news, industry insights, and changes within the search industry.
In 2018, Barry was awarded the US Search Personality Of The Year at the US Search Awards. In 2019 he received the Outstanding Community Service Award from the Search Engine Land Awards.
In addition to his columns, Barry has his own video series which is unsurprisingly excellent. In the videos, Barry interviews thought leaders at conferences, in their offices, and more recently outdoors at a safe social distance.
Barry has written tens of thousands of blogs on topics related to SEO, PPC, and everything related to search. It’s hard to imagine what SEO would be like without Barry’s contributions.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Barry Schwartz. We’ll talk about why he likes to keep his blog posts short, we’ll talk about the future of the SMX conference series, and I’ll talk to him about the famous “is this new?” inquiries he receives on social media.

Amanda is an in-demand conference speaker, blogger, and must follow on social media. Amanda is sought after for her expertise in content marketing and link building. You might’ve heard Amanda present at Mozcon, BrightonSEO, State of Search, and Pubcon. She is also has a great blogger who you can read all over the place. She’s written for Techcrunch, Search Engine Journal, SEMrush, and Moz.
During our conversation, I wanted to ask Amanda about her presentation at this year’s Mozcon. She gave a truly excellent talk about link gap analysis.
What tools are needed to do a link gap analysis? How do you appeal to link prospects? What’s the role of content creators?
I’m going to ask Amanda all these questions and more during our conversation.
She also recently started a new gig at Stacker. I’m going to ask her how things are going early on.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Amanda Milligan. We’ll talk about where most content marketing campaigns die, what SEOs mean when they say “link-worthy content,” and we’ll chat a little bit about why doing link gap analysis is worth the effort.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Patrick Stox, Product Advisor, Technical SEO, & Brand Ambassador at Ahrefs.
Patrick is one of the top SEO presenters in the world right now. He’s spoken at numerous conferences including, SMX, Pubcon, Ungagged, and TechSEO Boost. In 2018, Patrick was a finalist for speaker of the year at the Search Engine Land Awards. Patrick is also an excellent blogger and writer. He’s the man behind a lot of the outstanding content put out by Ahrefs.
I heard Patrick present at Pubcon Florida this summer on the Page Experience update. Patrick is extremely knowledgeable about the update, Core Web Vitals, and why improving page experience is valuable even if it’s not a major needle-mover for SEO.
Patrick appears often on “Top 100 SEO” lists. I can confidently say that he’s among the very best technical SEO presenters in our industry.
He’s well-known for helping organize the Raleigh SEO Meetup and the Beer & SEO Meetup. The sheer number of outstanding SEOs and digital marketers in that part of the country speaks to the success of the meetup.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Shannon McGuirk, Client Services & Delivery Director at Aira. Shannon is an in-demand speaker. She’s presented at MozCon, BrightonSEO, Learn Inbound, and the outREACH conference.
She is a frequent guest on webinars and podcasts. Shannon is considered one of the world’s leading experts on Digital PR and Link Building.
At this year’s MozCon, Shannon delivered one of my favorite presentations. The title of the presentation was “Lessons in Surviving the Covid News Agenda & What it Means for the Future of Digital PR”
As you probably know, most conference presentations are barely veiled sales pitches about everything an agency does well. Charts always go up when they’re talking about themselves and down whenever they’re talking about someone else.
In reality, the pandemic was challenging for many agencies. Aira lost 50% of their revenue early on. Shannon’s presentation gave the listener transparency into the challenges, stresses, and ultimately the ingenuity of the team at Aira.
I couldn’t wait to have Shannon on the show to discuss her MozVon talk. This discussion isn’t theoretical. Shannon tells us about the real-life challenges of being a leader at an award-winning digital marketing agency when things go sideways.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Shannon McGuirk. We’ll talk about her personal growth during the pandemic, what lessons she learned about doing digital PR when half of the journalists were furloughed, and I’ll spend a little time talking about leadership during a time of crisis.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Tony Wright, Founder and CEO of WrightIMC.
Tony is a veteran digital marketer, a past president of DFWSEM, an adjunct professor at Texas Tech, a columnist at Search Engine Journal, and a popular conference presenter. You may have heard Tony speak at Pubcon, State of Search, SMX East, and Affiliate Summit.
I’m going to start our conversation by asking him some questions about a presentation he delivered at this year’s Pubcon Florida. The presentation was a playbook for post-pandemic digital PR and reputation management. Tony will discuss his five-part plan for avoiding a reputational crisis online.
I’m also going to ask Tony a little bit about a column he wrote in Search Engine Journal titled, “Google Ads is Not for Small Business Anymore. Here’s Why.” Tony argues that if a business can’t spend at least $3,000 per month on Google Ads, the program simply doesn’t work anymore. What should small businesses do instead? Stay tuned for Tony’s suggestion.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Tony Wright. We’ll chat about why you need to do digital PR proactively, we’ll talk about the unique considerations for reputation management in a post-pandemic world, and I’ll ask Tony what it means for his company to be on Moz’s Recommended List again in 2021.

Amy is an in-demand speaker, a must-read blogger, and a frequent guest on webinars and podcasts. She’s an expert in paid search, paid social, and marketing strategy. She has presented at many of the biggest digital marketing events including Pubcon, State of Search, HeroConf, and SMX.
After you finish watching this episode, check out Amy’s column over at Search Engine Journal. Her writing is really excellent. She’s become one of my favorite bloggers focused on PPC.
I met Amy at Pubcon Florida this summer and heard her present. This has been a particularly volatile time for PPC marketers. Within the last 12 months, there’s been a series of major changes to Google, Facebook, and other advertising channels.
Amy’s advice? Diversify your channels so that you don’t have all your eggs in one basket.
Why should you look to expand into other channels even if you’re having success? Why is it important to have clearly defined personas? How do you measure the success of a multi-channel advertising campaign? I’ll get the answers to these questions and many others.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Amy Bishop. Damon is a serial entrepreneur, popular conference presenter, and one of the generally coolest people on the planet. You may have seen Damon and his famous beard at conferences such as Pubcon, State of Search, MKE Search, and Brighton SEO to name a few.
Damon is an engaging personality. He regularly appears on webinars and he is a frequent podcast guest. Damon is an expert on a wide breadth of subjects ranging from Paid Seach, Paid Social, and Local SEO.
I listened to Damon’s presentation at Pubcon Florida and I’m going to start our conversation talking all about it. The presentation was about how to appear more prominently in local searches. Damon takes our audience through all the different nuances in GMB.
Later in our conversation, I ask Damon about changes to Google Ads for small businesses. Stay tuned to hear Damon talk about how these changes might be helping Google but they aren’t helping small businesses or their advertising partners.
Damon is also the co-owner of the Denton Diablos soccer team. I talked to Damon shortly after the Diablos completed a national championship run for the ages. It’s a great story.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Kevin Frye, Marketing Director for the Jeff Wyler Automotive Family, one of the top 50 dealership groups in the United States.
Kevin is one of the most influential voices in automotive digital marketing. Automotive News named him one of the top 5 influencers in the world.
He is a presenter and frequent keynote speaker at automotive conferences including Digital Dealer, NADA, Driving Sales, Dealer Think Tank, Women in Automotive, and many, many other places.
I’m going to spend much of our conversation talking about a recent presentation he gave at Digital Dealer in Tampa.
Kevin’s talk was about a rather radical experiment he performed for his family of dealerships. He removed all forms from the site. No forms for new car sales. No forms for used car sales. No forms to make an appointment for an oil change. No forms anywhere.
What Kevin knew before the rest of the auto dealer world was that the current website model was antiquated. He suspected that if people were given the opportunity to chat and text in favor of filling out forms, the dealership would capture more leads.
Stay tuned to find out how effective this experiment really was.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Kevin Frye. My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Garrett Sussman, Demand Generation Manager at iPullRank.
Garrett is an industry veteran with over 10 years of experience. He’s a popular podcaster, blogger, and must-follow on social media.
Garrett made news earlier this summer when he announced he’d be joining Mike King’s already impressive team over at iPullRank. I’m going to ask Garrett how he’s settling into the new role and when we might see him behind the mic again.
Prior to joining iPullRank, Garrett had an impressive run working in key roles at companies such 99Designs, Traject, and Grade.us the popular local SEO Tool. We’re at an interesting moment for tools in SEO. Moz was recently acquired. SEMrush went public. I’m going to start my conversation with Garrett by chatting about the big announcements from earlier this year.
Most people in digital marketing like to carve out a niche and become the top person in whatever that is. What I really like about Garrett is that it’s hard to pigeonhole him into just one thing. He’s got a wide breadth of knowledge about a lot of topics in digital marketing. That made for a more fun and wide-ranging discussion.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Eli Schwartz. Eli is a growth advisor to some of the biggest brands in the world and the author of the fantastic new book Product Led SEO.
Eli led the SEO team at Survey Monkey building organic search from nearly zero to one of the largest growth drivers at the company. Eli has also provided SEO consulting to large brands such as WordPress, Shutterstock, BlueNile, Quora, Zendesk, and many others.
He is an in-demand speaker presenting all over the world at conferences like Pubcon, SMX, and Content Marketing World. He’s also acted as a judge at numerous industry awards shows including the US Search Awards, UK Search Awards, and the US Interactive Marketing Awards.
Writing a book about SEO is famously difficult. The industry changes so fast that by the time the book comes out we’re liable to have several new three letter acronyms to learn.
Product Led SEO is perhaps the best book I’ve ever read on SEO. Eli does an amazing job giving the reader real-world advice borne out of more than a decade of working on some of the most complex SEO problems imaginable. It’s a glimpse into how one of the brightest minds in SEO actually performs the work.
I’m going to start our conversation by talking all about Product Led SEO. We’ll disucss how product-led SEO is different from more traditional approaches to SEO and how he thinks about compound growth in relation to SEO.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Noah Learner, Product Director at Two Octobers.
Noah is one of the most exciting personalities in SEO right now. He is an in-demand speaker, educator, podcaster, and frequent clubhouse organizer. Prior to joining Two Octobers, Noah founded of BikeShopSEO, a boutique agency helping bike store owners with digital marketing. At Two Octobers, Noah has created many impressive tools for SEOs including a popular Google posting tool called Postamatic.
I first met Noah on a demo for a tool he created called Search Explorer. It’s hard for me to think of anything in my professional life that surprised me more than this tool. Subsequently, I’ve watched Noah lead webinars about Search Explorer and I got to witness everyone on the webinar have the same “oh my god” experience that I did.
During his presentation at this year’s MozCon, SEO Twitter was buzzing with people talking about Noah and this exciting new tool. Our mutual friend Blake Denman has accurately described Search Explorer as an SEO strategist's dream.
What is Search Explorer? How can SEOs use it to get more value for their clients? How is it so inexpensive?

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Dave Snyder, CEO at CopyPress.
Dave is a veteran digital marketer with a wide breadth of knowledge about SEO, Social Media Marketing, and Content Marketing.
Anyone who’s been in SEO for any length of time has run into a familiar struggle. Brands need a lot of content created in order to rank in Google or attract backlinks or generally succeed in SEO. The demands for more and more content are real.
At the same time, Google has become better and better at evaluating the quality of the content website publishers are making. With factors like E-A-T increasingly impacting search results, the demands for higher quality content have never been more difficult to navigate.
Dave’s agency CopyPress has become the go-to source for brands looking to scale their content. CopyPress’ talented team of writers and editors works with agencies like SearchLab as well as marketing departments at some of the most iconic companies on the Fortune 500 list.
One challenging thing about copywriting is that it's intrinsically a human-based activity. There’s no automating it. Eventually a human being has to look at a white piece of paper. Dave is the perfect guest to break down how to run a large scale content operation that produces great content at scale.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Dave Snyder. We’ll talk about how to hire good copywriters, a topic he calls infobesity, and I had to ask him about the world famous Bern's Steak House in his hometown of Tampa, Florida.

My guests on this week’s episode of Suds & Search are Garrett French and James Wirth, respectively, the founder and Senior Director at CitationLabs.
For my entire SEO career, the most important ranking signal for SEOs to consider is how to generate links from third party websites. The quest for more links, or higher quality links, or new link building tactics are all topics that captivate the attention of SEOs on blogs, conference presentations, and podcasts.
Garrett and James are among the world’s leading experts on link building.

Garrett co-wrote the book with the late great Eric Ward, aka Link Moses. We’ll spend some time talking about Eric as well as the early days of link building.
James is a veteran link builder and a fount of knowledge. James will provide awesome, actionable tips for link prospecting, link outreach, and tools to do the job.

Garrett literally co-wrote the book on link building titled “The Ultimate Guide to Link Building.” I’ll start our conversation talking about the book which is a dream for strategists.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Garrett French and James Wirth. We’ll talk about why links remain such an important ranking signal after all these years, we’ll chat a little about Garrett’s tool ZipSprout, and we’ll talk a little about a legendary sushi dinner in Seattle.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Kelsey Stapleton, Director of Customer Success Strategy at Justuno.
Kelsey is one of my favorite conversion rate optimization experts and a great person to have a drink with during the day.
Kelsey’s company, Justuno has created a suite of software to help businesses turn more of their online traffic into sales.
If you aren’t super knowledgeable about CRO, welcome to the club. We don’t do a lot of CRO work at my agency and Kelsey is the first CRO expert we’ve ever had on Suds & Search. So I’ll be learning along with the audience this week.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Kelsey Stapleton. We’ll talk about how to perform an effective CRO test, she’ll share some cringe-worthy CRO fails, and I’ll ask her a little about backyard ax throwing.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is John Lee, Head of Evangelism at Microsoft Advertising.
John is an in-demand speaker, blogger, and content creator on topics related to paid search and paid social. A shortlist of the places you might have heard John present includes Heroconf, State of Search, SMX, and SMX Advanced.
John is an industry veteran. Before joining Microsoft, he worked at several of the top brands in PPC including Wordstream, Hanapan Marketing, and as the co-owner of Clix Marketing.
He’s a really excellent blogger. If you enjoy this episode, I suggest you check out his column over at Search Engine Journal. He was also instrumental in the creation of the popular blog PPCHero.
Earlier this year, Microsoft advertising announced an exciting new ad format for automotive dealers. I start our conversation asking John all about automotive ads, the importance of automotive ads feeds, and he’ll share a few success cases.
It’s also an interesting time in PPC generally. Not only are we coming out of a pandemic but we’re entering a cookieless world with competing pressures on search engines for more privacy and more personalization in ads. John is a perfect guest to help us better understand this what’s coming next.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with John Lee. We’ll talk about planning for the post pandemic world, the role of automation and humans in PPC, and we’ll do a little Microsoft Ads mythbusting towards the end.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds and Search is Purna Virji, Senior Content Marketing Evangelist for LinkedIn.
Purna is one of the most popular and recognizable personalities in paid media. In 2019, Purna was awarded the U.S. Search Personality of the year. She is a mainstay on PPCHero’s list of the top 25 PPC influencers in the world. In 2016, PPC Hero named Purna the most influential PPC marketer in the world.
For many years, Purna served as Microsoft’s brand ambassador to the PPC community. She left that role in the fall of 2020 but stayed in the Microsoft family by joining LinkedIn. I’m going to start our conversation asking her about the transition.
Purna is a leading conference presenter and frequent keynoter. It’s hard to think of a digital marketing conference she hasn’t spoken at. A very, very short list of the conferences you might have heard Purna present includes Pubcon, Brighton, Mozcon, and many of the different SMX events.
I’m going to ask her about a recent presentation she did at inOrbit titled, “Building Breakthrough Content for LinkedIn.” In the talk Purna describes what differentiates a LInkedIn user from users on other platforms and she gives a lot of actionable tips for how to reach this audience.
Purna is also a leading blogger and educator. During her time at Microsoft, she helped prepare a white paper on inclusive marketing titled “Your Get-Started Guide to Inclusive Marketing.” I’m going to ask Purna about the ebook which was truly excellent. After you’re done listening to this interview, there’s a link to the ebook in the show notes.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Purna Virji, one of the leading voices in paid media today. We’ll chat about how to make your content stand out on LinkedIn, a concept called inattentional amnesia, and I’ll also ask Purna about how breaking both her arms changed the way she does searches.

Schema markup was developed in 2011 as a collaboration between the world’s leading search engines. Since that time, the general interest and application of Schema among SEOs has skyrocketed. Martha has become the leading presenter in our industry talking about Schema markup.
She is an in-demand conference presenter, blogger, and educator on topics related to Schema. You may have heard Martha present at Brighton SEO, State of Search, SMX Milan, and the Content Marketing Conference.
She is a frequent trainer on topics related to Schema. She’s appeared on webinars for Bright Local, SEMrush, and for all the impressive content SchemaApp puts out.
She started SchemaApp with her husband Mark and it’s become one of the hottest tools in the industry. We’ll talk about how the SEO community's intense interest in Schema has led to explosive growth of her company.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with the extremely impressive Martha Van Berkel. We’ll talk about how Schema can help with every stage of a marketing funnel, we’ll talk about the challenges of creating a tool that can work for schema die hards and neophytes, and for our Local SEOs out there, I’ll ask Martha about Local Schema.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is my friend and colleague Greg Gifford, Vice President of Search at SearchLab.
Greg is a veteran digital marketer and one of the most recognizable speakers in the industry. It’s hard to think of a conference he hasn’t spoken at. He’s well known in the SEO community presenting at conferences like MozCon, SMX, Pubcon, and UnGagged.
He’s a popular speaker within the automotive industry presenting at conferences like NADA, Digital Dealer, and Internet Battle Plan. AND he is a rock star overseas at conferences like Brighton SEO, SearchLove London, InOrbit, and Learn Inbound.
Greg is well known for his fast paced, often profane, movie themed presentations. In a one hour presentation, Greg may rifle through more than a hundred beautifully designed slides… oh, and there are never any bullet points. As Greg sees it, bullet points kill kittens.
He is also the host of the weekly video series Local Search Tuesdays. Each week Greg packs a ton of valuable information into a short and highly entertaining video segments. From time to time, he’ll change it up and have special guest appearances from a conference he’s attending or he’ll even publish a full conference presentation. Local Search Tuesdays is must watch content in the Local SEO world.
Rather than cover topics you’d find on his show, I wanted to take our conversation in a slightly different direction. I’ve watched closely as Greg has overhauled SearchLab’s internal processes and procedures to allow our agency to scale quickly. At Brighton SEO this Spring, Greg gave away all his secrets to running an agency. I’ll start our conversation asking Greg about how to manage and build an SEO department.
Greg is also frequently mentioned on this show with his “No Context” questions. Greg will give me a word or two to ask our guests but no additional details. Now that Greg is being interviewed I’m going to try out a few no context questions of my own.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Greg Gifford. We’ll talk about why he said, doing digital marketing is easy but running an agency is hard, we’ll chat about conference presenting broadly and what makes a good presentation, and I’ll ask him where to get the best steak in America.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Dr. Pete Meyers, Marketing Scientist at Moz.
Dr. Pete is a legend in the SEO community. He is the creator of Mozcast, which operates like a weather report for detecting when Google has made an update to their algorithm. Mozcast started in 2012 at the time of some of the most consequential algorithm updates ever.
9 years later Mozcast remains a go-to resource for SEOs who want to learn what might’ve happened to their rankings and traffic after Google made a tweak to their algorithm.
I’m going to start our conversation asking Dr. Pete about Mozcast, google updates generally, and I want to get a sense of how tumultuous the weather has been so far in 2021.
Dr. Pete is also a must-read blogger and conference presenter. He is a regular contributor to the Moz blog and over the course of my career I can recall more than a few of his posts going viral on SEO Twitter. I’m going to ask him about one of those posts from a few years ago about https being mere table stakes.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Dr. Pete. We’ll chat all about how studying algorithm changes from the past might help SEOs become better predictors in the future, we’ll talk about vanity metrics in SEO, and I’ll ask him a little bit about the cult movie Bleeding Steel starring Jackie Chan.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Brett Tabke, the Founder and CEO of Pubcon, one of the most important conference series in search marketing.
Brett has been involved in the computer and technology industry for over 30 years. He started a software company for commodore computers back in 1984. Throughout his career Brett has displayed an amazing ability to build communities and educational opportunities around topics related to the internet.
Brett founded the Webmaster World Forum in the late 90s. Webmaster World was a place where SEOs went to learn about ranking websites in search engines before it was even called SEO and before Google was the dominant search engine.
The popularity of the Webmaster World forum led directly to Brett starting Pubcon. Pubcon, which started in a literal Pub in London back in 2000, has grown massively. For the past 20 years, the very best presenters in the industry have appeared at conferences in Florida, Las Vegas, Austin.
Brett was awarded the 2016 Lifetime Achievement award at the US Search Awards for all his contributions to the industry.
This has been an interesting year for conferences to put it mildly. Pubcon, like everyone else, had to take their conferences virtual and adapt to life during the pandemic. Vaccines are rolling out now and a return to in-person conferences is imminent. I start our conversation asking Brett about the recent past, present, and future of Pubcon.
Join me for a conversation with Brett Tabke, one of the really good guys in our industry. I’ll ask him what makes a conference presentation great and why some presenters crash and burn, we’ll reflect on 20 years of hosting Pubcon and make sure to stick around to hear Brett’s all-time favorite Pubcon memory.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Aleyda Solis, founder at Orainti. Aleyda was awarded the 2018 European Search Personality of the Year at the European Search Awards.
Aleyda is a popular conference presenter and frequent keynoter. She has presented at over 100 conferences in 20 countries presenting in both English and Spanish. For my money, she is one of my favorite presenters in the industry. You may have heard her present at SMX, MozCon, Pubcon, Women in Tech SEO, and Brighton SEO as well as many, many other places.
Aleyda is the creator of the popular newsletter SEOfomo. When she launched it, SEOFomo took the SEO industry by storm. I’ll ask Aleyda a little about the Newsletter during our conversation.
She is the host of the popular video series Crawling Mondays. The series has amassed an impressive subscriber total and features conversations between Aleyda and some of the top SEOs in the world.
She is also the creator of learningSEO.io an SEO learning roadmap with the best videos, blog posts and online training courses for different topics in SEO. As you would expect with anything from Aleyda, it’s extremely comprehensive.
Aleyda has a wide breadth of expertise but one of the topics I learned from her was international SEO. Whenever a website is appealing to audiences in several different countries speaking different languages, it presents numerous challenges from an SEO perspective. Aleyda has become the world’s leading expert on international SEO and I start our conversation asking her a few questions about it.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is the amazingly talented Jono Alderson, Manager of Special Ops at Yoast.
Jono has been one of the leading figures in SEO for some time now. He is a frequent keynote speaker, blogger, and educator. You may have heard Jono present at MozCon, SearchLove, SMX, and the Inbounder.
In 2018 Serpstat named Jono the SEO Specialist of the year. Also in 2018, SEOktoberfest named him SEO World Champion.
Jono’s breadth of expertise is quite wide. He’s an expert in digital strategy, SEO, analytics, web development, WordPress, structured data, conversion rate optimization, and more.
I first heard of Jono from a speech he gave a few years ago titled the “Democratization of SEO.” I’m going to start our conversation asking him about that speech which starts with a simple realization… SEOs continue to perform the same routine tasks over and over again. As technology improves, there will be less of a need to fix internal links and 404 pages. Jono asks SEOs to consider: what happens when everyone’s website is fixed?
Jono is also the creator of daysoftheyear.com which catalogues every holiday on every day. So if you were ever curious about when Sherlock Holmes day or Public Gardens day is, take a look at https://daysoftheyear.com.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with the incredibly impressive Jono Alderson. We’ll talk about his unique insights into doing SEO on WordPress, how SEOs are more like janitors than rock stars, and we’ll talk a little bit about Jono’s impressive sci-fi book list.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Kevin Indig, Director of SEO at Shopify. Kevin is a popular conference speaker, blogger, educator, and podcaster.
A shortlist of conferences where you might’ve heard Kevin present includes Brighton SEO, Advanced Search Summit, AdWorld, and SMX Munich.
For my money, Kevin is among the very best writers on topics related to SEO in the world. He has his own newsletter called “The Growth Memo,” which I highly recommend. He has a recurring column at Search Engine Journal which is equally outstanding.
Kevin is extremely good at looking at large amounts of data and identifying patterns and learning lessons. One pattern that Kevin has noticed is an increase in the number of experiments Google is performing to better align their results to searcher intent. The result for marketers is analyzing what Kevin describes as an “unstable SERP.” I’ll start our conversation unpacking that concept and asking him how SERP volatility can actually present an opportunity for savvy marketers.
Earlier this year, Kevin published a brilliant newsletter predicting changes to SEO and technology generally. I went through some of those predictions with Kevin including one about whether or not Apple will launch their own search engine some time this year.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with one of the most popular SEOs in the world, Kevin Indig. We’ll talk about tactics to grow your organic traffic, his new role at Shopify, and a little bit about life as a Chicago-based SEO.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Eric Enge, Principal at Perficient. Eric is one of the most recognizable faces in digital marketing. He is a frequent keynote speaker, a prolific writer, blogger, researcher, teacher, and entrepreneur.
Eric has won numerous awards. In 2018, he was named Search Personality of the Year by the Drum Search Awards. In 2016, he was awarded Search Engine Land’s Landy Award for Search Marketer of the Year and he also won US Search Awards Search Personality of the Year in 2016.
Eric is the lead author of the book The Art of SEO, a 900+ page book that is frequently used as THE textbook for learning SEO.
Eric started Stone Temple Consulting in 1997 and grew it to be one of the most celebrated brands in SEO. Stone Temple won numerous awards including the award for Best Large SEO Agency at the 2016 US Search Awards. In 2018, Perficient acquired Stone Temple Consulting. Under Eric’s leadership, the accolades have continued to pour in including the 2019 Interactive Marketing Award for Best SEO Agency and Best Interactive Marketing Agency.
He has written for nearly every major search marketing blog I can think of including, Search Engine Land, Search Engine Journal, Moz, Copyblogger and many others. I’m going to ask Eric about a link building study his team have been publishing annually in partnership with Moz.
Eric also started the popular video series “Here’s Why.” Our mutual friend Mark Traphagen was the co-host of the show for years. Eric recently brought Mark back on. I’m going to ask him a few questions about that episode which was about the power of user intent.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with inimitable, Eric Enge. We’ll talk about why studying the past in digital marketing is so important, how to optimize for featured snippets (and why you shouldn’t over-focus on snippets), and we’ll talk a little bit about foosball and wine tennis.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Christi Olson, Microsoft’s Global Media SEM Team Lead.
Christi is one of the most popular and well-known PPC keynote speakers in the industry. You may have heard Christi present at UnGagged, Content Marketing World, HeroConf, all the different SMX events, Pubcon… Come to think of it, the list of the conference she hasn’t spoken at may be shorter than the ones she has.
She is a mainstay on PPChero’s list of the top 25 PPC experts in the world appearing on the list every year since 2015.
In September, Christi switched roles at Microsoft. Christi had been Microsoft’s Head of Evangelism for about 4 and a half years before assuming her current position as the Head of Search Adverting at Microsoft. I’m going to start our conversation talking about how the transition to her new role is going.
Christi is also a prolific writer, blogger, and educator. You can read her excellent column at Search Engine Land and I highly recommend checking out her work on the Microsoft Advertising blog.
I’m going to ask Christi about an impressive white paper created by Microsoft and iProspect titled “In Brands We Trust: The Intersection of Privacy and Trust in the Age of the Empowered Consumer.”
The white paper covers the myriad ways paid advertisers are being impacted by privacy concerns across the globe. We’ll talk about the apparent tension between consumer demands for greater personalization and more stringent privacy.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with the incredibly impressive Christi Olson. We’ll have a wide-ranging conversation about audience targeting, on site search, and the unique advertising opportunities for e-tail businesses.

My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Mark Traphagen, Vice President of Product Marketing & Training at seoClarity.
Mark is an indispensable member of the SEO community. He is ubiquitous on the conference circuit, a prolific blogger, vlogger, educator, and thought-leader.
A very short list of the conferences you may have heard Mark present at includes Pubcon, State of Search, MozCon, and all the different SMX events.
He is a frequent columnist at Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Land, and on the seoClarity company blog.
Where I think his talents shine brightest are on video series and webinars. Earlier this year, Mark put out a webinar titled the State of the Enterprise SEO Industry. I’m going to spend a lot of our conversation talking about the findings in that webinar.
For years, he and his Eric Enge co-hosted the terribly impressive and often hilariously funny web series “Here’s Why.” I’m going to ask Mark about the video series. Between when I visited with Mark and this episode aired, Mark and Eric brought the band back together (pun intended) for a great episode about the power of user intent.
There aren’t many people like Mark Traphagen. He is considered by many of his peers one of the smartest and kindest professionals working in digital marketing. That was on display when my four-year-old son decided to make a cameo appearance during our discussion.
Join me for a conversation with Mark Traphagen. We’ll talk about Core Web Vitals, SERP Feature Changes, a nuanced view of rank tracking seoClarity calls visibility share, and we’ll spend a little time talking about lavender martinis.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Paula Keller French, Director of Sales and Marketing at Search Influence, a digital marketing agency located in New Orleans. Paula started at Search Influence in 2009 on the then-9 person team. Today, the team at Search Influence has grown considerably expanding on their SEO and PPC services to offer clients ROI-focused funnel-funnel marketing strategies with a particular focus on higher ed institutions as well as the medical and tourism industries.
Paula is a popular conference speaker, blogger, and trainer. A shortlist of the conferences you might’ve heard her speak at includes Mozcon local, Local U, Pubcon, State of Search, and Engage. She’s also led training sessions at her alma mater LSU.
Periodically, Apple released updates to their operating system. There are many reasons for these updates and generally speaking, the updates are totally benign. It's not a big deal for digital marketers or iPhone users who make up around 47% of the cell phone users in the U.S.
Apple’s next update called, ios 14 has a little bit more going on. For the first time, iphone users will select to either opt in or opt out of sharing their data with the social media behemoth. Paula and the team at Search Influence are working to prepare their clients for the update.
We’re going to spend a lot of our conversation talking about IOS 14 and diving into a blog post written on the Search Influence site about “Four Steps to Prepare for Apple iOS 14’s Impact on Your Facebook Ads.”
Grab something cold to drink for a conversation with Paula Keller French. We’ll have a wide ranging conversation about how advertisers adapt to new privacy policies, I’ll ask a few questions about a post she wrote highlighting medical industry trends, and she’ll talk a little about why it’s important to talk with your hands.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Joe Laratro, President at Tandem Buzz, a boutique digital marketing agency based in Hollywood, Florida that specializes in SEO and PPC.
Joe’s agency recently celebrated their 15th anniversary. Tandem Buzz has received several accolades including winning the US Search Award for best small agency in 2018.
What I find most fascinating about Joe is that in addition to being an agency owner, he’s always doing a bunch of other things within the search industry. He is the lead moderator and serves on the board of the popular conference series Pubcon. He’s a Microsoft Certified Trainer and he teaches a course on digital marketing at the University of San Francisco. Joe is also the former president of the South Florida Interactive Marketing Association.
I’m going to start our conversation talking about Pubcon and the myriad ways that the conference circuit has been upended during the COVID pandemic. We’ll discuss Pubcon’s newer approach to conferences focused on specific topics like ecommerce and local.
Joe’s agency works with small businesses that have recently become eligible for Local Service Ads, a newer ad format from Google that usually appears at the top of the SERP with a label saying “Google Guaranteed.” Joe and I talk a little bit about this opportunity for SMBs and I’ll also pick his brain on providing search marketing services for franchise businesses.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Joe Laratro. We talk all about agency life, whether or not virtual conferences are here to stay, and we’ll spend a little time talking about deep sea fishing.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Barry Adams, owner of Polemic Digital, a specialized SEO Consultancy based in Northern Ireland.
Barry is an in-demand conference presenter and frequent trainer on topics related to Technical SEO. A few places you might’ve heard Barry present include Brighton SEO, Ungagged, SMX Munich, SMX Paris, Pubcon, Chiang Mai SEO, and many other places.
His consulting business has worked with some of the world’s largest brands. Polemic Digital has won several awards including the UK Search Awards, DANI Awards, and the coveted Global Business Insight Award.
Barry has been optimizing websites since 1998. Over the course of his career, Barry’s technical SEO audits have become the stuff of legend. I’m going to spend a lot of our conversation asking about a range of topics related to technical SEO and best practices for auditing a website.
I really like his speaking style. He pulls no punches especially on topics that irritate him. He’s never more engaging than when he’s deep into a righteous profanity-laced rant.
Recently, Barry has started a newsletter called SEO for Google News. The newsletter focuses on the unique SEO needs of Publishers. He’s amassed an impressive subscriber list in a short period of time.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Barry Adams. We’ll talk about the limitations of relying on SEO tools to perform an audit, how to appeal to the different audiences receiving an audit, and we’ll talk a little bit about his vulgarity competition with Greg Gifford.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Joy Hawkins. Joy is the Owner and Founder of Sterling Sky. She is one of, if not the, most recognizable Local SEO personalities in the world. It’s hard for me to think of anything in Local SEO that Joy isn’t at least somewhat involved in.
She has spoken at every major Local SEO conference… most of them multiple times. A shortlist of places you might’ve heard Joy present includes Mozcon Local, SMX, Pubcon, and Whitespark’s Local Search Summit.
She is the owner of LocalU, the most important conference series for Local SEOs in the world. LocalU is more than just a conference series though. The Local U website a go-to destination for Local SEOs looking to level up their Local SEO knowledge by reading blogs, listening to podcasts, and following their newsletter.
Joy is also one of the most important bloggers in Local SEO. You can read her column at Search Engine Land. She frequently publishes content over at Local U and on the Sterling Sky company blog. I’m going to ask her a few questions about a Whiteboard Friday she did for Moz back in October about what Local SEO tactics improve rankings and which do not.
In addition to her responsibilities at Sterling Sky, Joy is involved with two important forums. She is a Platinum Google Product Expert at the Google My Business forum and she is the owner of the Local Search Forum. I’ll start our conversation by asking her about her involvement in both of those important forums.
Joy has assembled an all-star team of digital marketers over at Sterling Sky. In 2020, BrightLocal nicknamed her staff the “Sterling Sky dream team.” Carrie Hill, Mary Bowling, Colan Nielsen, and Brian Barwig are just a few of Joy’s impressive teammates. I’m going to ask her what it’s like leading this talented team of professionals.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Joy Hawkins. We’ll talk about why it’s harder than you might think for Google to clean up GMB spam, what factors on GMB actually improve rankings, and we’ll spend a little time talking about the board game Dominion.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Ginny Marvin, the former Editor-in-Chief at Third Door Media. Third Door Media is the publisher of Search Engine Land, Marketing Land & MarTech Today. They also host the popular conference series Search Marketing Expo with nine events scheduled in 2021.
At the time our episode was filmed, Ginny had just finished her tenure at Third Door Media and we spend most of our conversation reflecting on her time there. Very recently, Ginny announced that she has accepted a role at Google as its new Ads Product Liaison.
Over the course of her career, Ginny has had a truly unique perspective on the industry. I started reading Search Engine Land back in 2008. It has remained the go-to destination for search marketers seeking daily news coverage, breaking stories, industry trends, feature announcements, and product changes.
Ginny was at the center of many of the most consequential news stories in search in her eight years covering the industry. We had a wide-ranging conversation talking about how she got started without any formal training as a journalist, what it was like managing her talented team of writers, and what she’ll miss most about covering our industry.
Throughout 2020, Search Engine Land covered topics related to racial diversity and gender inequality. Ginny had her name in the byline of many of those articles and led many of those conversations. We’ll talk about this important work during our conversation but you should really read it for yourself. Links are in the show notes.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Ginny Marvin. We’ll talk about how a story gets made, what makes for a great interview, and we’ll talk a little bit about her future and whether or not we’ll see her at an SMX event in 2021.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Carrie Hill. For over 13 years, Carrie has been one of the most important voices in digital marketing for small and medium businesses. Carrie has contributed her talents at industry conferences, on podcasts, webinars, and blogs.
She has presented at virtually every Local SEO conference including LocalU, Whitespark Local Search Summit, and all of the different Pubcon events. She’s a prolific writer as well. She has contributed to Search Engine Land, Search Engine Watch, and on the Sterling Sky company blog.
Almost a year before our discussion, Carrie and her long-time partner Mary Bowling joined Joy Hawkins team at Sterling Sky. Sterling Sky has assembled an amazing team of Local SEOs earning the nickname the Sterling Sky Dream Team. I start our conversation talking about how the past year has gone at Sterling Sky and what’s in store for 2021.
Carrie is also a fixture over at LocalU. She co-hosts the impressive podcast Last Week in Local with Mary Bowling and Mike Blumenthal. She contributes blogs about a variety of topics but she is really good at talking about branding and content for small businesses.
We spend a little bit of the conversation talking about community building for small businesses. Building a genuine online community is something that huge global companies struggle with. Carrie explains how small businesses can create a community online that generates positive sentiment, better reviews, and what she calls “community karma.”
Karma is an interesting term for our data-obsessed industry. How do you measure karma? Carrie makes a persuasive case for how focusing on karma leads to all sorts of wins for small businesses.
Join me for a conversation with Carrie Hill. We’ll talk about common small business content fails, who a local influencer is, and we’ll drink bourbon during the middle of the day.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Lee Manning, Co-founder of Armchair Marketing. Lee is generally considered one of, if not the top automotive digital marketers in the UK. Prior to starting his own agency, Lee had an amazing run at a UK top 20 automotive dealer group. His work quickly garnered attention and the group he was responsible for began winning awards…lots of awards. Over an 18 month span, Lee and his team won 18 prestigious industry awards.
Since 2016, Lee has consulted for some of the largest dealer groups in the UK, helping these dealers generate more inquiries at a lower cost on Google and Facebook. Armed with an incredible amount of data after years of working in auto, Lee is uniquely positioned to understand the automotive market in the UK. We’ll talk a little bit about how Lee uses the vast amount of data they’ve accumulated to make smarter marketing decisions.
Lee’s co-founder affectionately describes him as a “strange marketer.” I think that comes from his truly extraordinary backstory. Lee left school at 14, took a job in auto, and hated it at first. It’s amazing how many times during our conversation Lee’s ability to look at problems differently helped him make a major breakthrough.
I start our conversation by talking about his agency a little bit. If you visit their home page, you’ll notice that Lee and his team do things a little bit differently. Armchair drives visitors to their free educational material like the company’s extremely impressive podcast called The Armchair Show. There’s no pushy sales language at all. The only way you’d know that this is an award-winning agency is a statement that says, “Our sales team told us to say ‘please remind people that we’re also marketing agency.’”
Join me for a conversation with Lee Manning. We’ll talk about how dealerships should allocate their budget properly by channel, we’ll chat about his business operations software tool called Leebot, and London shenanigans with Greg Gifford.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Jim Ziegler, owner of the Ziegler SuperSystems and a legend in the automotive industry. For over 44 years, Jim has contributed his talents as a writer, magazine columnist, professional speaker, and turnaround artist at some of the biggest auto dealerships in the United States.
Jim has spent a lifetime learning everything about the auto dealer business. He has done business with more than 15,000 dealerships nationwide and more than 100,000 Dealers, managers, and factory executives have attended Jim’s popular automobile dealer management seminars. Traveling more than 200 days a year, the man has physically worked in more than 1000 showrooms in no less than 200 cities in 49 states. (hasn’t made it to Alaska yet)
He is the host of the popular virtual training series Alpha Dawg On Demand. At the time this episode is airing, he has created over 160 training videos to assist retail automotive dealerships with everything from running their operations, marketing their dealerships, training their sales staff, and managing their finances.
Jim started his consulting business in 1986. Over the course of his career, the web has fundamentally changed the way that dealers have had to approach every facet of their business. Jim has masterfully evolved with the changes to the industry. He is the host of one of the most important conferences in automotive – Internet Battle Plan. He is a frequent keynote speaker at major conferences like NADA, Digital Dealer, and JD Power Roundtable. He is perhaps the most well-read columnist in auto. Perhaps what fascinated me most was the massive social media following he has attracted. Wait until you hear about his super exclusive, super impactful Facebook group only for dealers.
Join me for a conversation with the Alpha Dawg, Jim Ziegler. We’re going to talk about how the industry has changed and how it hasn’t over time, I’ll ask him what keeps him excited about working with auto dealerships after all these years, and I’ll talk to him about what happens when Jim Ziegler goes to a dealership to buy a new car.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is George Nenni. George is the Founder of Generations Digital, a digital marketing consultancy for auto dealerships.
George has over 3 decades of experience helping automotive dealerships overcome an array of digital marketing challenges. He is the author of two essential books. His first is titled, A Car Dealer’s Guide to Google My Business which explores all the unique opportunities for car dealerships within Google My Business. Just before this episode launched, George released his second book, A Car Dealer’s Guide to Digital Marketing.
George is an in-demand speaker and presenter at industry conferences like Digital Dealer, JD Power Roundtable, Internet Battle Plan, Innovative Dealer Summit, and many, many other places.
He has his very own Google Analytics certification program called Generations Digital U. We’ll talk a little bit about his course which is designed for auto dealers and their marketing teams.
Generations Digital is brought in by automotive dealerships to evaluate their digital marketing vendors. George and his team specialize in identifying wasted spend by analyzing Google Analytics and scrutinizing media spend primarily on Google and Facebook. George and his team function like white blood cells fighting off wasted ad spend from a dealer’s marketing budget.
George is also passionate about Google My Business and the potential for dealerships to utilize this free program from Google to improve the bottom line of every department in their store. I’m going to spend some of our conversation discussing the missed opportunities auto dealerships experience how they could use the awesome power of GMB to sell more cars.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with one of the top automotive digital marketers in the world. We’ll talk about what keeps him excited about automotive after 30 years, what unique challenges auto dealerships face on GMB, and I’ll ask him a few questions about his popular chrome extension GMB Spy.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Dana DiTomaso, co-founder of Kick Point Digital. I’ve been a fan of Dana’s for a really, really long time. In an industry with a lot of really smart digital marketers, Dana stands out.
She is an in-demand keynote speaker, blogger, and industry veteran. She has presented at virtually every major industry conference. A shortlist includes Mozcon, Brighton SEO, LocalU, Content Jam, and many of the SMX events. In 2018, Dana was nominated as the “SEO Speaker of the Year” by Search Engine Land.
I’m going to start our conversation by talking about a presentation she did at Whitespark’s Local Search Summit titled “Level Up Your Analytics.” In her presentation, she challenged digital marketers to take the responsibility of maintaining customer analytics accounts more seriously.
Earlier in my career, the only Google products available to measure and evaluate data were Google Analytics and Google Search Console. Today, marketers need to know Google Tag Manager, Google Data studio, and Local SEOs begrudgingly rely on GMB insights.
I’ve learned a lot from Dana about how to use each of these tools. During our conversation, I ask her about how to use Tag Manager to measure micro and macro conversions, how to put GMB insights into context, and how to use customer empathy to make better reports in Google Data Studio.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Dana DiTomaso. We’ll geek out on data and discuss why she doesn’t like to present customer data from the classic tables model commonly found in spreadsheets. And I’ll ask her a few questions about her beloved Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Sephan Bajaio. Stephan is the Chief Evangelist and Co-founder of Conductor, a search and content intelligence platform that helps marketers create and optimize content to improve visibility online.
Stephan has a well-earned reputation for being one of the really good guys in our industry. He is an in-demand speaker, podcaster, and SEO expert. He co-hosts the extremely impressive podcast Search of Tap and the equally impressive webcast Search from Home.
His company, Conductor, puts on the C3 conference and the annual Searchie Awards.
Stephan has a gift for identifying problems. He has an innate sense of when things aren’t working right. I’m going to start our conversation asking him about some of those problems and how SEOs might begin to solve them.
One problem he’s noticed is a lack of access to decision-makers. Simply put, SEOs don’t have a seat at the table where decisions are made. Stephan notes that SEOs often have access to data that can help every facet of an organization but for some reason, they remain several degrees removed from the c-suite. He’ll explain how SEOs can evangelize for their data.
We’ll also have a frank conversation about problems with the SEO industry. Stephan is fond of the phrase, “If you’re not helping people you’re just selling stuff.” There’s even a t-shirt. I love that phrase and Stephan’s laser-focus on value. We’re going to spend some time talking about the responsibility SEOs have to use the data at our fingertips to create value.
Grab a beverage and join me for a conversation with the extremely interesting Stephan Bajaio. , We’ll talk about where SEO belongs inside of a large organization, how SEOs can add value to virtually every facet of a company, and I’m going to ask him what a Chief Evangelist does.

My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is AJ Wilcox, Founder of B2Linked, a LinkedIn Ads Agency. AJ is an in-demand speaker, podcaster, course instructor, and author.
He is considered one of the world’s leading experts on LinkedIn ads. PPC Hero included him in their list of the top 25 influencers in the world for the past four years. He’s presented at SMX, Social Media Marketing World, Inbound, Heroconf, Pubcon, and many other industry conferences.
He hosts his own podcast called The LinkedIn Ads Show. If you like this conversation, I highly recommend you check out his show. In my opinion, it is the best podcast for people looking to level up their knowledge of LinkedIn ads.
LinkedIn has a compelling value proposition for B2B advertisers. No platform knows as much about its user’s work-life as LinkedIn. This gives advertisers a huge advantage in targeting ads at a specific audience.
Despite the obvious benefits, there aren’t as many tools being created or conference presenters talking about LinkedIn as there are about Google, Facebook, or even less mature social media sites like Tik Tok. I start our conversation by asking him why that ratio seems off.
The other obvious benefit of LinkedIn is for businesses that experience challenges hiring. I ask AJ about how to use LinkedIn to make finding your next hire less costly and less of a headache.
Join me for a conversation with AJ Wilcox, a LinkedIn ads expert and a really fun person to have a beer with. We talk about how to get started with LinkedIn ads, what industries perform best on LinkedIn, what ad formats are available, and how to make your LinkedIn ads stand out from the spammers.

My guest on our last episode of Suds & Search for 2020 is Justin Sanger. Justin is the Chief Revenue Officer and Equity Investor at OMG National. For over two decades, Justin has been a pioneer in small business digital marketing.
He founded LocalLaunch back in 2003. LocalLaunch offered Paid Search, SEO, and landing page optimization services way back in the early 2000s just as Google was emerging as the leading advertising channel for SMBs. LocalLaunch was acquired by RH Donnelley in 2006.
I started my career at LocalLaunch shortly after the acquisition. It was a great place to get started. You’ll find LocalLaunch alums like me at agencies all over Chicago and beyond.
I witnessed in those early days, that Justin really understood the unique challenges small businesses face when trying to promote their products or services. I’m going to start our conversation by talking about the problems small businesses face today. In short, Justin believes they’re being sold the wrong products.
Justin was remarkably prescient about the shift of marketing dollars from print marketing to digital in the early 2000s. Today, he believes another shift is beginning to occur. Justin is all-in on Local Service Ads, or LSAs for short. LSAs are a very disruptive new form of advertising that gives small businesses a Google Guaranteed badge. The ad sticks at the very top of the search engine results page. I’m going to ask Justin all about LSAs and the ways that small businesses can use them to their advantage.
Join me for a conversation with Justin Sanger a true trailblazer in local search and social. I couldn’t think of a better guest to help us close out the year. We’re going to talk all about small business marketing, why LSAs represent a massive opportunity, and we’ll chat a little about Pittsburgh Steelers fandom.

Mike Blumenthal, co-founder of GatherUp https://gatherup.com/ @mblumenthal
My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Mike Blumenthal. Mike is the Founding Partner of GatherUp and the Co-founder of LocalU. Mike is one of the most important voices in Local SEO. His motto is all local, all the time. It’s hard to think of anyone who has contributed more to the Local SEO community than Mike.
Mike and co-host Mary Bowling have their own podcast called Last Week in Local. It’s a great podcast for anyone who wants to stay on top of Local SEO news, updates, or generally learn from some really smart people. He’s on the faculty at Local U where he is affectionately known as Professor Maps.
He’s a frequent presenter at search conferences including Whitespark’s Local Search Summit, Local U Advanced, and many of the different SMX events.
Mike is also an excellent blogger. You can find his work on the GatherUp website, on Bright Local’s blog, and in Street Fight Mag. His blog at blumenthals.com has been an indispensable source of education and inspiration since I started doing SEO for small businesses over a decade ago. I’m going to ask him about a post he wrote titled “10 Likely Ranking Factors of Google’s Local Search Algorithm.” Not surprisingly, the post of chock-full of really good information. Somewhat surprising…he wrote it in 2007.
In 2013, Google began powering its search engine with the knowledge graph. This had major implications for Local SEOs. With new features appearing in the knowledge panel, users were now able to learn a lot about a business and even convert without ever visiting a company’s website. I’m also going to ask him about one of the most popular quotes in Local SEO – Google is your new home page.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with professor maps, Mike Blumenthal. We’ll talk about the ways local search on Google is becoming a more immersive experience, why everyone needs to rethink their approach to reviews, and what keeps him excited about local after all these years.

Anders Hjorth, Founder of Innovell innovell.com @soanders
My guest on this episode of Suds and Search is Anders Hjorth. Anders is a veteran digital marketer and the founder of Innovell, a company that provides Digital Marketing Insights based on in-depth research. Anders is a serial entrepreneur who has founded multiple digital marketing agencies. In 2016, his agency BDBL was acquired by Accenture.
Anders appears on PPC Hero’s list of the top 25 influencers in the world. He is a regular presenter at conferences all over the world including HeroConf London, inOrbit, SMX Advanced Europe, and the International Search Summit in Barcelona.
He’s served as a judge at numerous industry award shows including the UK Social Media Awards, European Content Awards, and the Grand Prix du Search.
Nowadays, Anders along with a few collaborators create research papers which are far more rigorous and require far more research than the typical content you see in our industry. I’m going to be speaking to Anders about a recent study he’s done titled, “Digital Marketing in a VUCA World.”
To prepare the study, Anders interviewed the top experts in search. Full disclosure, SearchLab’s Director of Paid Media, Mark Irvine was a contributor. Ordinarily, these reports would cost 250 euros but as of this publication, there is a sponsor giving away free copies. Move quickly to get yours before time runs out.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation about data with Anders Hjorth. We’ll discuss a concept he refers to as data bubbles, a new approach to evaluating data that he calls data realism, and why savvy marketers aren’t fighting automation.

David Mihm, founder of Tidings https://tidings.com/ @davidmihm
My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is David Mihm. David is the founder of Tidings, a software product that automatically generates perfectly-branded email newsletters for small businesses.
For over a decade, David has been one of the leading voices on Local SEO. He founded GetListed in 2009 during the early days of Local SEO. GetListed was acquired by Moz, and David took a role at Moz as their Director of Local Search Strategy.
Over the years, David has been featured in blogs on pretty much every major SEO publication including GatherUp, BrighLocal, Moz, and Street Fight Mag.
He currently serves on the faculty at LocalU. He appears pretty every local SEO conference and on tons of podcasts and webinars.
I heard David present at Whitespark’s Local Search Summit a few weeks before he came on the show. I started our conversation by asking him about his presentation titled, “Email: Your Marketing Lifeline During COVID-19 (and Beyond).” It’s interesting to hear him talk about the ways that COVID has disrupted digital marketing and how email marketing has gained greater exposure.
We also talked about Local SEO. David published the original Local Search Ranking factors study way back in 2008, and a few years ago when he left Moz, he handed the study over to Darren Shaw of Whitespark. I asked him about the importance of reviews, how to set up a good Local SEO foundation and the ways the industry has changed, but also remained the same over the years.
Grab a beer and join me for a conversation with David Mihm. We talk about email marketing for small businesses, Local SEO best practices, and his efforts to remain a scratch golfer during the global pandemic.

Wil Reynolds, Founder of Seer Interactive https://www.seerinteractive.com/ @wilreynolds
My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is the incomparable, Wil Reynolds. Wil is the Founder and Vice President of Innovation at SEER Interactive, a 150 person digital marketing agency specializing in using Big Data to improve SEO and Paid media campaigns.
No offense to any of my other guests, but Wil has been my favorite presenter in SEO for many years now. He’s dynamic on stage while packing in tons of useful tips.
He has a unique ability to talk about topics that are really technical and then pivot to topics that are really human while being really engaging the entire time.
Many of Wil’s talks in recent years have been about his passion for big data. He had an epiphany a few years ago when a teammate at SEER challenged him to a keyword research competition. Since then, he’s been able to find incredible opportunities for his clients that are entirely overlooked by most SEOs. He’s also found ways to save paid search clients hundreds of thousands of dollars in wasted spend. I’m going to start our conversation talking about big data and how SEER uses it to get an advantage.
Wil is currently raising money for his annual sleep out supporting the Covenant House. Wil sleeps on the street to raise money for homeless youth in his native Philadelphia. His goal is to raise $25,000 this year. I’m going to ask him all about it during our conversation. Check the show notes for ways that you can contribute.
Grab your favorite beverage and join me for a conversation with one of the real leaders in SEO. We’re going to talk about how to cut waste out of your paid campaigns by using big data, why it’s important to do RCS, and we’ll talk about the time he swapped CEO roles with Rand Fishkin.

Rand Fishkin, founder of SparkToro https://sparktoro.com/ @randfish
My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is a man who needs no introduction. Rand is one of - if not the most recognizable personalities in SEO. He is the co-founder and CEO of SparkToro.
Previously, he co-founded SEOMoz, which later rebranded to Moz, along with his mother Gillian. Moz is one of the most important brands in SEO. From Whiteboard Fridays to the Beginner’s Guide to SEO to MozCon and all the impressive tools Moz has created, Rand has been at the center of this incredible company from the start.
Rand resigned from his board position at Moz in October 2020 just after we spoke. You can learn more about his personal journey and that of his company in his incredibly impressive book, Lost and Founder. I’ll spend some of our conversation talking about the book, but honestly, I could’ve talked to Rand all day about it. I couldn’t recommend a book more strongly. It’s not just for SEOs! It’s not just for entrepreneurs. It’s an incredible human story. Rand courageously tells all the great and gory details of his entrepreneurial life.
I’m going to start our conversation talking about his new company SparkToro. I’ll get Rand’s reaction to some use cases for Local SEOs and pick his brain on a post he wrote titled, “Six Ways SparkToro’s Early Customers Use Our Product.”
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Rand Fishkin. We talk about the importance of core values in business, how to become less reliant on the duopoly of Facebook and Google, why he chose to make canceling a subscription with SparkToro easier, and we’ll spend a little time talking about his love for pasta and al pastor tacos.

Will Critchlow, founder and CEO of SearchPilot https://www.searchpilot.com/ @willcritchlow
My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Will Critchlow, CEO at SearchPilot and SEO Partner at Brainlabs. Will is one of the most famous SEO presenters in the world. His content is ubiquitous on blogs, webinars, and at industry conferences.
Will co-founded Distilled in 2005 with Duncan Morris. Distilled became an iconic brand in SEO, winning numerous industry awards. Will and the team at Distilled started the conference series SearchLove, one of the most popular search marketing conferences with events held in London, San Diego, and New York.
Earlier this year, Distilled’s consulting services were acquired by BrainLabs. I’m going to start our conversation by talking about what it was like to go through an acquisition.
His new project, SearchPilot, was originally software Distilled used to help their clients. Now they’ve developed a really interesting way for SEOs to do A/B tests. A/B testing is popular in Conversion Rate Optimization and Paid Media, but not as much in SEO. I’m going to ask him about some of the findings from the A/B tests he and the team at SearchPilot have performed.
Will and Distilled have had an amazing relationship with Moz and Moz’s co-founder Rand Fishkin that I’ve followed from afar. We talk about how building genuine relationships rather than transactional relationships was a key to Distilled’s rapid growth.
Grab a beer and join me for a conversation with Will Critchlow one of the most important voices in SEO. We’ll talk about how the industry has evolved over his 15-year career, how to do a proper a/b test in SEO, we’ll talk about his love for basketball and what he learned from having his children perform a handful of searches on Google.

Duane Brown, owner and head marketer at Take Some Risk https://www.takesomerisk.com/ @duanebrown
My guest on this week’s episode of Suds & Search is Duane Brown, Founder and Head Marketer at Take Some Risk.
Duane started Take Some Risk in January of 2017. In a short period of time, they have developed an impressive roster of clients including Birdies, Unbounce, and Woocommerce.
Duane is a paid media expert who worked internationally for years before starting his own agency. His journey from vagabond digital marketer to agency owner...during a lockdown was definitely something I wanted to discuss with him.
Duane is an in-demand conference speaker who has presented all over the world. A shortlist of the conferences he’s spoken at include, Brighton, INBOUND, SMX, and SEERfest.
Duane is also an accomplished writer. What I really like are his long-form guides to lesser-used advertising channels like Snap Ads and Tik Tok. I’ll spend a lot of our conversation talking about his guides and how marketers can use these channels more effectively.
Grab a beer and join me for a conversation with Duane Brown. We’ll discuss the value of advertising on smaller channels like Tik Tok and Snap, Google’s update to their Search Terms report, and why he decided to fire all his clients in August 2017.

Dave Davies @oohloo
Mary Davies @oohloo_mary
My guests today are Mary and Dave Davies, the husband and wife co-founders of Beanstalk Internet Marketing. They’ve got a new project called Oohloo which I’m going to talk to them about during this conversation.
This is the first time we’ve had a couple on Suds & Search and it was one of my favorite episodes yet.
Mary and Dave are experienced and sought after experts in SEO, Social Media Marketing, and user experience. They are both fixtures on the speaking circuit. They’ve presented independently and sometimes as a couple at State of Search, Pubcon, SMX, SEM Summit and many, many other places.
They are contributors to Search Engine Journal, SEMrush, Search Engine Watch, and Search Engine Land. Dave has co-hosted his own podcast known as Webcology for over a decade.
All their professional accomplishments aside, Dave and Mary Davies might be the two nicest people I’ve ever met. Mary consistently supports causes around mental health and suicide prevention which are far too common in our industry. We’re going to talk a little bit about her upbringing and background in social work and how it impacts her work today.
What I like most about Dave is his unbridled enthusiasm. Some presenters sit behind a podium and speak in a monotone voice. Dave is an energetic teacher pacing across the stage educating the audience on some of the most complex topics in SEO. I’m going to ask him about one of his favorite topics, Entities.
Grab a beer and join me for a conversation with Mary and Dave Davies. We’ll talk about social media marketing during COVID, their new Entity Crawler & Reporting Tool, and what dinner conversation is like in the Davies household.

Jason Brown, GMB Spam Fighter and GMB Gold Product Expert @keyserholiday
My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Jason Brown, an expert Local SEO, and Google My Business Gold Level Product Expert. Jason has a wide breadth of SEO knowledge but what he really loves to do is fight spam.
Spam has been a major issue in SEO from the very beginning. Over the course of my thirteen-year career, Google has cleaned up many of the most common tactics but local businesses still grapple with an astonishing level of spam especially in the map pack.
Spam fighters like Jason Brown act as consumer vigilantes fighting spam on behalf of legitimate local businesses. I start our conversation by asking Jason about the different ways that spammers are attempting to take advantage of vulnerabilities in Google’s local algorithm.
In many cases, this activity isn’t merely a matter of bad customer experience; it’s actually fraudulent. We talk about why Google hasn’t been able to do more to fight spam and how other third-parties like the better business bureau are involved.
Jason presents at numerous industry conferences including LocalU, Local Search Summit, and Pubcon. He is a columnist for SEMrush and regularly appears in BrightLocal webinars. He is a sought after subject matter expert for national and local news pieces on local spam. If you like this interview, I highly recommend that you follow Jason on Twitter.
Grab a beer and join me for a conversation with one of the top Local spam fighters in the world. We’ll talk about why local Spam is so prevalent, how small businesses can fight back, and the time he found a lawyer who had a listing in the middle of the ocean.

Casie Gillette, Sr. Director of Digital Marketing at KoMarketing https://komarketing.com/ @casieg
My guest today is Casie Gillette, Senior Director of Digital Marketing at KoMarketing. Cassie has been a sought after speaker, writer, and contributor in SEO for many years.
She’s presented at the top conferences in the industry including Mozcon, Pubcon, SMX, and SearchLove London.
I really love her writing. She is a VIP contributor at Search Engine Journal and regularly writes for KoMarketing’s company blog.
One of my favorite things Casie talks about is a challenge asking digital marketers to grow up a little bit. As Google has gotten more sophisticated, the tactics that used to work when Casie and I started in SEO aren’t effective. We start our conversation talking about some of the most cringe-worthy epic fails she has seen in content marketing.
We also talk about some brands that are doing things right - make sure to listen to how Wegman’s, a supermarket chain in New York, earns customer loyalty and lines around the block by making memorable content.
Casie is also a really enjoyable person to have a beer with. She was kind enough to let us interrupt her move to drink German beers and talk about what the top content marketers in the world are doing differently, the ways Google rewards great customer experience, and why you absolutely have to take a duck boat tour the next time you’re in Boston.

Upasna Gautam, Ecommerce Product Manager at CNN https://www.cnn.com/ @upasnagautam
My guest today is Upasna Gautam, Product Manager at CNN. Upasna is a leading expert on publisher SEO. Publisher SEO is a really interesting niche that focuses on publisher sites, which produce a mind-boggling amount of content. Imagine being responsible for ranking hundreds of thousands if not millions of existing pages in Google while creating workflows so that a breaking news network like CNN could add thousands of pages every day that are also optimized for Search Engines. That is the very challenging work publisher SEOs do every day.
Upasna is an in-demand speaker who’s presented at major SEO conferences including SMX, Pubcon, Inbound, State of Search, and many more.
She grew up in my home state of Michigan and went to my alma mater, Michigan State. We’ll talk a little bit talking about her journey from being a biomedical sciences student in Michigan to a marketer now residing in Texas.
I highly recommend that you check out Upasna’s Ted Talk titled Optimizing for the Next Billion. The talk is about how voice search impacts third world countries. She introduced me to a concept known as Internet Saathi. We’re going to talk a little bit about her talk as well as voice search more broadly.
Recently, Upasna offered a free virtual workshop for women in tech interested in presenting at conferences. The response was so positive that she opened up a second workshop. That also completely filled up. I recommend that anyone interested follow her on Twitter for future updates.
Join me for a talk about publisher SEO, building information architecture, voice search, and where to get good late-night food in East Lansing.

Cyrus Shepard, Founder of Zyppy https://zyppy.com/ @CyrusShepard
Often adorned in his signature fedora, Cyrus Shepard is one of the most recognizable faces in the SEO industry.
Cyrus joined me for some day drinking on Suds & Search earlier this summer to talk about a bunch of topics in SEO.
He is an SEO consultant at Moz and the owner of Zyppy, an SEO agency he founded in 2018. Cyrus formerly served as lead SEO at Moz and remains extremely active at Moz to this day. He frequently appears on Whiteboard Fridays and continues to publish blogs on the Moz site.
In most years, Cyrus MCs or co-MCs Mozcon, the biggest conference in SEO. I start our conversation asking about Mozcon and the challenges of MCing a virtual event.
What I like best about Cyrus is that he’s an excellent teacher. Over the course of his career, he’s written guides and done presentations that give SEOs really useful advice.
Our conversation was no expectation. This interview is packed with actionable SEO tips.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with one of the most sought after SEO experts in the world Cyrus Shepard. We’re going to talk about the best ways to perform keyword research, the proper way to prepare an SEO report, a novel approach to evaluating keyword rankings and I’m going to ask him about the time he wore a toupee for two weeks.

Heather Physioc, Group Connections Director, Discoverability | VMLY&R https://www.vmlyr.com/ @heatherphysioc
My guest today is Heather Physioc, the remarkably interesting Group Connections Director at VMLY&R. Heather is the leader of an award-winning 40-person Discoverability Group. If you don’t know what a discoverability group is, you’re not alone. I’m going to ask her about it early on in our discussion.
Heather is an in-demand speaker who’s presented at virtually every major conference in our industry. A shortlist of the places you might have heard her present includes Mozcon, Brighton, SearchLove, and Pubcon.
In an industry that is very technical, Heather frequently presents on topics about the human side of actually doing our job. This is the tough work of earning trust with clients, building relationships with teammates, and fostering genuine collaboration.
For example, at most agencies, there is a department for SEO and a department for PPC, and so on. One of the things Heather’s team is well-known for is taking an interdisciplinary approach to search marketing. We’re going to talk about how her integrated teams have created value for clients by un-siloing paid search, SEO, and performance writing.
She is also is a knowledgeable beer drinker. It was her idea for us to drink some delicious beers from boulevard brewing based in her hometown of Kansas City.
Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Heather Physioc about client stewardship, what it takes to be a good teammate and our mutual love for dogs.

Ashley Segura, VP of Global Operations, TopHatRank https://tophatrank.com/ @ashleymadhatter
My guest today is Ashley Segura, Vice President of Global Operations at Top Hat Rank. Ashley is one of the world’s leading presenters on topics related to social media and content marketing.
She has presented all over the world including at Pubcon, SMX, Content Marketing World, State of Search, and many, many other places. She is a regular contributor at Search Engine Journal and a fixture on many SEMrush webinars and training videos.
Ashley is a true marketer. How do I know? When she got married, Ashley and her husband decided to get an RV and travel around the country. What’s interesting about that story is she started a branding experiment on social media known as Nomad Newlyweds, developed strategies and hash tagging tests to build an audience for their experience.
Top Hat Rank, where she works was recently nominated for a U.S. Search Award and they are doing a ton of interesting things. I’m going to ask Ashley about two new-ish ventures, TopHatSocial and TopHatContent.
Grab a beer and join Ashley Segura and me for a conversation about how to perform a proper social media audit, how to measure ROI from content marketing, and PubCon scavenger hunts.

Niki Mosier, Head of SEO, Two Octobers https://twooctobers.com/ @nikers85
My guest today is Niki Mosier, Head of SEO at Two Octobers. She's a well known local SEO, a must-follow on Twitter, and a popular presenter. She has presented at SMX West, WordCamp, Optimisey and she'll be speaking at Brighton later this year.
A few years ago, Local SEO legend Mike Blumenthal coined the phrase, "Google as your new home page." The idea is that Google is showing so much information in knowledge panels and other special features that searchers no longer need to go to your website to find out everything. In fact, Google probably has some better information than a small business website.
Niki is an expert at helping businesses optimize their GMB listing to take advantage of these features from Google. I met her earlier this year at SMX before everything got shut down. I heard her give an excellent Local SEO presentation about how to optimize GMB q & a and how to write a perfect business description.
Niki is a graduate of Shine Speaker Bootcamp and we spend a little bit of time talking about her experience as an up-and-coming speaker.
Niki and I drank some local craft beers while geeking out on local seo, offering tips for local link building and local content optimization, and I ask her about the future of her favorite team, the Green Bay Packers.

Mike King, Managing Director of iPullRank https://ipullrank.com/ @ipullrank
In 2011, I was a young SEO Director for a small agency. I read a blog post from a not very well known SEO with a memorable Twitter handle - ipullrank. After reading the post, I remember sending an email to our team that said something like, "You all need to read this immediately." The author of that blog post was Michael King and I've remained a fan of his ever since.
Today, Mike is the Managing Director of iPullRank, the digital marketing agency he founded. Mike and his team work with some of the most iconic brands on the Fortune 500 list. He's got a really interesting back story. I start our conversation talking about his journey from unappreciated contractor to agency owner.
Mike is an expert blogger, presenter and frequent keynoter. He's presented all over the world at basically every major conference including MozCon, Brighton, SearchLove, and pretty much all the SMX events. If you've never heard him present, you're missing out. His presentation style is unique. For example, this year's MozCon was a virtual event. He didn't give a speech. He made a movie. There's even a trailer.
Over the course of my career, he's written blog posts that occupy the attention of SEOs for weeks afterward. I'm going to ask him about one of those posts from earlier this year advising all of us to reconsider rank tracking.
One of my favorite things about SEO is toggling between your left brain and right brain. Mike King does as well or better than anyone I know. No one this good technically should be allowed to be this good creatively.
Also, Mike King is cool. He was a professional rapper, on tour in Europe, doing work on a train between gigs before he ever considered SEO his full-time career.
Grab a beer and join me for a conversation with Mike King. We're going to be talking about technical content optimization, Natural Language Processing, and blindfold rapping.

Ruth Burr Reedy, VP of Strategy, UpBuild
https://www.upbuild.io/
@ruthburr
Today's guest is Ruth Burr Reedy, Vice President of Strategy at UpBuild. I first heard of Ruth when she was working at Moz as their Lead SEO. Veteran SEOs know that Moz used to be called SEOmoz. Ruth took on the daunting challenge of overseeing the SEO for that rebrand. She's now living in Oklahoma and I start our conversation asking about her journey to UpBuild.
Ruth is an in-demand speaker who's presented at all of the major industry conferences including Ungagged, Mozcon, SMX, and State of Search.
In an industry that is very analytical, what I like most about Ruth is that her content is rich with empathy. She's extremely good at challenging our industry to be a little more human. I'm definitely going to ask her about one of her most popular sayings, "It's called show business, not show friends." She's written brilliantly about burn out, remote work, and running a profitable business with low client to consultant ratios.
Grab something cold to drink and join Ruth and me for a conversation about avoiding employee churn, developing company culture with a 100% remote workforce, and what it was like growing up as a theater kid.

Michelle Morgan, Director of Client Services at Clix Marketing http://www.clixmarketing.com/ Twitter: @michellemsem
Each year, PPC Hero publishes a list of the top PPC influencers in the world. I've been fortunate to interview many of the PPC experts who appear on that list. My guest on this episode of Suds & Search is Michelle Morgan. When PPC Hero published their list for 2020, Michelle was #1. If you've seen one of her videos, heard her present or read a blog post she authored you know that that honor is well-deserved.
Michelle is the Director of Client Services at Clix. She co-hosts a video series called Paid Media Pros with her colleague Joe Martinez. Joe has also been on Suds & Search and he's also a mainstay on the PPC Hero list.
Michelle and Joe produce so much valuable content on their video series that it makes the rest of us look bad. I highly suggest you out Paid Media Pros channel.
Michelle is deeply knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects. One week she'll give you a rundown on targeting options for snapchat ads and the next she talking about the Facebook Audience Overlap Tool then the next she's covering sitelink ad extensions in Google. One of the reasons I was so excited to talk with her was to find out how one person knows so much about so many different ad platforms.
At the same time she produces all this incredible video content, Michelle is also an in demand speaker at conferences like Engage, Pubcon, Heroconf, the Utah DMC, SMX and many, many others.
Michelle and I drank cider and talked about why your CTAs might suck, how she'd design an ad campaign if budget wasn't a concern and how to collaborate with stakeholders. Grab something cold to drink and tune into a conversation with the top PPC influencer in the world.

Akvile DeFazio, Founder and President of Akvertise, Inc. https://www.akvertise.com/ Twitter: @AKvertise
Akvile DeFazio is the remarkably impressive founder and president of Akvertise, a social media advertising agency in California. She's been on PPC Hero's list of the top ppc influencers for the past three years.
She's a regular presenter on topics related to paid social. She's spoken at numerous industry conferences including Pubcon, Paid Traffic Conference, Engage, and the Utah DMC Conference.
Akvile had a really interesting journey to business ownership. She served in many manager and senior level positions including a stint at Third Door Media as Digital Marketing Manager. How she decided to start her own agency was a topic I definitely wanted to ask her about.
It's common to find Akvile mentioned in roundups and on webinars about social media marketing. Early this year, the state of California passed the California Consumer Privacy Act or CCPA for short. The CCPA regulates how social media platforms are allowed collect user data. Akvile is a leading voice on the ramifications of this law for social media marketers.
Grab a beer and join Akvile and me for a conversation all about social media marketing, entrepreneurship, and what savvy marketers are doing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lily Ray, SEO Director at Path Interactive https://lilyray.nyc/ Twitter: @lilyraynyc
My guest today is Lily Ray, SEO Director at Path Interactive. Lily has been one of the most popular speakers in the industry for a while now. She's been nominated for multiple industry awards, including Best Female Search Marketer by Search Engine Land.
She's an in demand speaker. A short list of the conferences she's presented at includes SMX, Brighton, Ungagged and Pubcon. Lily is also one of my favorite writers in the industry too. Her content has been featured in Moz, Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Land and many, many other places. She's a must-follow on Twitter.
On August 1st 2018, Google launched a broad core update which has become known as the Medic Update. SEOs all over the world got introduced to yet another three letter acronym - EAT which stands for Expertise, Authority and Trust. While the concept of EAT predates the medic update, the level of interest in the SEO community skyrocketed after the Medic update.
Lily is an expert on EAT. How much of an expert? Google's Webmaster Central blog actually links to Her slides from Brighton as a reference. She joined me on Suds & Search to talk about EAT, the unique challenges of Your Money, Your Life websites, quarantine rides and her popular coronavirus DJ livestream fundraiser.

Mark Irvine, #1 Most Influential PPC Expert https://www.linkedin.com/in/markirvine89/ Twitter: @MarkIrvine89
Today's guest is Mark Irvine. PPC Hero named Mark the #1 Most Influential PPC Expert of 2019. Microsoft Advertising named him the Influencer of the Year in 2019. I'm not sure if there's a list of PPC experts he isn't on.
Until very recently, Mark served as the Director of Strategic Partnerships at Wordstream. At the time this episode is airing, Mark is pursuing new opportunities. If you're hiring, reach out to him on Twitter before it's too late.
He's a well known presenter and frequent keynote speaker at conferences all over the world. He presented at 17 conferences in 2019 alone including Pubcon, SMX Advanced, Hero Conf, and Wordstream Live.
Mark's background is in data science and his writing is packed with data-driven research. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Mark as well as the rest of the team at Wordstream, have done some amazing work. I'm going to ask him about the myriad ways that our traditional understanding of paid search is changing.
Mark joined me to drink some summer ales and talk about PPC research he recently completed. Plus we talk a bit about how to navigate the craziest year of our lives.

He is a staple at SEO conferences all over the world including SMX, Pubcon, State of Search, and Onward. He co-authored the book, UnFair Advantage: Winning the Search Engine Wars which has been updated over 289 times as of this publication. It is the longest continuously updated SEO book on the Internet.
Casey has been in SEO for over 20 years and has a vast array of knowledge but he's earned a reputation for a specific skill...site audits. The current waitlist to get one his famous site audits?...over 6 months!
Casey's talents are especially popular in the food and travel blog niche. He basically works off of referrals and doesn't have any trouble finding new opportunities. There are a lot of people who speak at conferences and publish content but what surprised me about Casey was the sheer number of endorsements he's gotten from previous clients.
Casey's also a lot of fun to have a beer with. On this episode of Suds & Search we talk about common SEO mistakes people are making, how to avoid Google penalties, and his deep love of bacon.

Jill Quick, Co-Founder of The Coloring in Department https://thecoloringindepartment.com/ Twitter: @jillquick
My guest today is Jill Quick, the brilliant and engaging Co-Founder of The Coloring in Department. Jill has a well-earned reputation as one of the top presenters on topics related to analytics. A short list of the conferences she's presented at includes SMX London, SearchLove, Learn Inbound, and Hero Conf.
If you've never heard Jill present before, she's really exceptional. She's entertaining and funny while packing in a ton of practical advice. Plus her slides look better than anyone else. As a matter of fact, take a look at anything The Coloring In Department produces. Their graphic design and storytelling approach is really exemplary.
Jill and her team provide training and consulting services to everyone from fortune 500 companies to small businesses. The Coloring in Department has managed to keep the cost of their online Google Analytics training course remarkably affordable.
This is a bit of a departure from our typical Suds & Search. Jill's beverage of choice is Gin. So she joined me to drink some gin, talk about analytics, and homeschooling during the shutdown.

Navah Hopkins is my guest on this episode of Suds & Search. She is the Director of Paid Media at Hennessey Digital. She’s a regular on PPC Hero’s list of The Top 25 Most Influential Experts.
Her writing is really exceptional. After this video, check out her column at Search Engine Journal. She’s also a dynamic and in-demand speaker who presents all over the world.
A short list of the conferences she’s presented at include SMX, PubCon, HeroConf, Advanced Search Summit, and State of Search. For a limited time, she’s offering free office hours. There’s a link in the intro to schedule a time to speak with her.
A self-described “PPC scythe,” Navah loves nothing more than guiding people on a path to profit and victory.
During her appearance on Suds & Search, we tasted some local beers and talked about a range of ppc topics. She’s has a wealth of knowledge about quality score and the myriad ways Quality score is misunderstood.
We talked about ad copy (the good and the bad). We talked a little bit about a new course on SEMrush about competitive analysis that I encourage everyone to check out. Selfishly, I wanted to know more about message mapping, a topic Navah knows really well.

My guest today is Duane Forester, V.P. of Industry Insights at Yext. Duane is a legend in the SEO community.
He’s among the top keynote speakers in the industry. Emphasis on keynote. He has presented the last day keynote at State of Search for as long as that conference has taken place. I first heard him present way back in 2011 at SMX West (as a keynoter) and I’ve remained a fan ever since. At that time, Duane was the Head of the Bing Webmaster Program.
So many celebrity digital marketers are described as visionaries but Duane is the genuine article. He’s not a guy you talk to about SEO 101.
If you want to hear someone discuss title tags or basic link building tactics, this isn’t going to be an episode for you.
If you want to know where search is going. If you’re interested in what the top 1% of marketers are doing differently, you’ll want to hear what Duane has to say.
He’s been remarkably prescient about everything related to the future of search.
He joined me on Suds & Search to talk about two of his favorite topics – answers and intent.

Darren Shaw, founder of Whitespark https://whitespark.ca/darren-shaw-whitespark-founder/ @darrenshaw_
My guest today is Darren Shaw. Darren is a Local SEO Rockstar. It's hard to find a roundup post about Local SEO where he isn't a contributor. He oversees the Local Search Ranking Factors survey, a must-read in local SEO. He speaks all over the world on topics related to local search.
Darren's the founder of Whitespark, a really awesome company offering local search software and services. SearchLab uses a lot of Whitespark tools, which I'm happy to disclose because I think Whitespark is awesome and I'm happy to recommend them.
The timing of Darren's appearance coincided with Whitespark's announcement that they were relaunching their new Local Citation Finder tool. We'll spend a little bit of time talking about the tool itself and more time talking about citations.
For those who don't work in Local SEO, a citation is a mention of your business on the web - think of Yelp, Facebook, Tripadvisor, and Angie's List as well known places to get a citation. The value of Citations in SEO has waxed and waned throughout the years which has caused them to be pretty misunderstood. It's great to have an expert like Darren on to clear some things up. He joined me for a beer to talk about a variety of topics in Local SEO and to try out his new green screen.

Joe Martinez of Clix Marketing http://www.clixmarketing.com/joe.html @MilwaukeePPC
SearchLab Digital https://searchlabdigital.com
My guest today is Joe Martinez, Director of Client Strategy at Clix Marketing. We met at SMX West where he gave a killer presentation on one his favorite topics, Youtube Ads.
Joe has been on PPC Hero's list of the top 25 most influencial PPC experts for the past three years. He has a deep understanding of paid media but he's really become a go-to resource for everything related to YouTube and Quora Ads. He co-hosts his own video series Paid Media Pros which covers topics related to YouTube Advertising, paid placements, paid social, and Quora ads.
He's a rockstar presenter. In addition to SMX, Joe has brought his high-energy style to Heroconf, Pubcon, Confluence Conference and many more. He is also a contributor at Search Engine Land, Wordstream, SEMrush, PPC Hero.
Joe is a perfect guest for Suds & Search. Not only is he an industry expert, he's a big fan of craft beer, especially from breweries in his hometown of Milwaukee.
Joe joined me on Suds and Search to talk all about YouTube ads, Quora ads, the Midwest beer scene and his Star Wars fandom.

Steven Hammer, Founder of RankHammer https://www.rankhammer.com/ @armondhammer
SearchLab Digital https://searchlabdigital.com
My guest today is Steve Hammer, President at RankHammer, a full-service digital marketing agency offering SEO, PPC and Analytics. Steve is a well-known speaker who's presented just about everywhere. You can usually catch him at Pubcon, SMX, Brighton, State of Search, and Heroconf. RankHammer has been recognized as the small agency of the year by US search awards.
His interests outside of search are also well-known. Steve takes food and beverage very seriously. No offense to any of my previous guests, but he's been by far the most knowledgeable beer fan that I've had on. He and I will be tasting the Goose Island's Bourbon County Stout. For serious beer fans, we're comparing the 2017 and 2019.
Steve has been one of my favorite thought-leaders during the quarantine. I wanted to touch on some subjects outside of search. We'll talk about agency life, mental health, and the numerous ways the industry is changing for better and worse.

Susan Wenograd of Aimclear https://www.aimclear.com/ @SusanEDub
SearchLab Digital https://searchlabdigital.com
My guest today is Susan Wenograd, CMO at Aimclear. I'm not sure I know anyone with the breadth and depth of Susan's expertise in paid media.
She is a sought after speaker, writer and trainer on topics related to paid social, paid search, content strategy and integrated marketing. She's one of my favorite presenters. A short list of the conferences she speaks at includes Social Media Marketing World, Pubcon, Brighton, SMX and Social Media Examiner.
In addition to her role at Aimclear, Susan is a Paid Media Reporter at Search Engine Journal. After you watch this video, be sure to check out her column.
Susan is a true marketer. She understands how different channels work together and how to put together an effective integrated marketing strategy.
She joined me on Suds & Search to talk about ways to get value out of traffic that doesn't convert, how to create an effective customer funnel and her fondness for Disney.

Kirk Williams of Zato https://zatomarketing.com/ @ppckirk
SearchLab Digital https://searchlabdigital.com
My guest is Kirk Williams. He's the owner of Zato, a really cool paid search micro-agency that focuses exclusively on PPC for eCommerce companies.
Kirk is a go-to resource on industry publications for all topics related to Shopping Ads on Google and Bing. PPC Hero named him one of the top 25 PPCers in the world for 4 years running. He's regularly featured on Moz, Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Watch, Wordstream, Optimyzr and many more. He speaks all over the world including SMX, Inbound, Hero Conference, Brighton, Pubcon, and Search Marketing Summit.
The timing of his appearance coincided with the Coronavirus pandemic. The day before we filmed, Google had a major announcement on Shopping Ads and I'll be asking Kirk some questions about a post he just wrote covering the topic.
Also, Shopping Ads are kind of a weak point of mine. We talk about the fundamentals of running shopping ads, the role of automation, and voice search on shopping ads.

Blake Denman RicketyRoo https://ricketyroo.com/ @blakedenman

My guest today is Blake Denman. Blake is the President and Founder at RicketyRoo, a Local SEO agency based in Bend, Oregon. Blake is a rising star in the Local SEO community. He’s an in-demand speaker at conferences all over the world. He’s a contributor at Search Engine Land and for Moz’s Local Search Ranking Factors study.
Blake is a huge fan of the show The Office and frequently incorporates elements from the show into his presentations. I met Blake last Fall at State of Search in Dallas where he delivered an excellent local SEO link building presentation while dressed exactly like Dwight Schrute.
This episode was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and so we’ve taken Suds & Search inside. I scheduled a Zoom call with Blake to talk about Local SEO and a new project he's been working on.

My guest is today is Ben Fisher, co-founder of Steady Demand. He’s a contributor at Bright Local, Search Engine Land to Moz’s Local Search Ranking Factors. He speaks all over the world on topics related to Local SEO and Social Media Marketing.
He’s been in the industry since 1994 and he’s probably forgotten more about SEO than most of us will learn in a lifetime.
Ben is a Google My Business Platinum Expert. If you don’t know what that means, stay tuned because I’m going to ask him.
The episode was filmed during the shelter in place policies and so it’s a bit different than our typical Suds & Search Episodes.
Ben joined me on Zoom to talk about map spam, how to get a suspended listing reinstated and new products and features coming from Google My Business.

He hosts Wine and Web a monthly event at Orbit’s office which is located directly across the train tracks from SearchLab. He and Orbit also host Chicago’s best conference, Content Jam.
Andy’s content ubiquitous online and he speaks at conferences all over the world.

Dan Golden BFO: https://befoundonline.com/team/dan-golden/ Burning Bush Brewery: https://www.facebook.com/burningbushbrew/ SearchLab: https://searchlabdigital.com/
Dan Golden is the Chief Search Artist at BFO, headquartered in Lakeview.
Dan and his co-founder Steve Krull have built BFO into one of Chicago’s top digital marketing agencies. They’ve won a bunch of awards for their work with enterprise-level clients doing everything from digital strategy, SEO, Paid media, Analytics and content. BFO was on the INC 5000 list for six consecutive years. They have locations in Chicago, London and Singapore.
I’m really excited to have Dan on. Even before I knew anything about BFO, I knew who Dan was. He’s a unique personality. He's extremely smart, he's full of ideas and he’s recognizable! He famously wears orange everywhere he goes.
I met Dan for a beer at Burning Bush Brewery in North Center to talk about agency life, the future of search and how he rebounded from “fan rock bottom” with $21.49 in Facebook ads.
