We do not have an agenda other than creating a space to worship, pray, confess, and let God move.
If enough people show up, our pastor Wes will share a message God has laid on his heart. If the crowd is small, we will simply pray and worship together.
These assemblies on Monday night are about learning to love, having our characters transformed to be more like Jesus, and connection to the supernatural in a real way as God intended.

God did not create a broken world. He made a perfect world. It was people who decided to do things their own way and broke it. Because of that brokenness, grief is inevitable. There is no way to leave this world unscathed from it. All of us will lose people we love, lose relationships, lose out on our dreams, lose out on what should have been. Experiencing grief is like being dropped in the middle of a desert beside a trail that leads out. You cannot see all the way to the end of the trail, and the parts you do see look treacherous. You can choose not to take the trail at all and remain in the desert- alone, and eventually die of thirst- or you can walk down the trail. It will be hot and uncomfortable, you may fall several times, but eventually you will make it some place more survivable.
A few years ago, on an otherwise normal weekday morning, I received a phone call from my mom telling me that a close family member unexpectedly passed away. I remember standing by the edge of my bed and visibly seeing the world shift beneath me. This was someone who, when I was a child, would take me to an indoor swimming pool in the middle of winter because that’s what I wanted to do. I remember our hair freezing when we would step outside to leave. Someone who let me drive her car, because I was terrified to drive, and she wanted to encourage me. Someone who got me one of my first jobs and commuted to work with me every day I went in. Someone who was easy to talk to and was very understanding when I made mistakes. It was, and still is, a hard loss.
I have heard it said when something difficult happens in your life, your mind reverts back to the age you were when you experienced your first trauma, and so it is likely you will respond in a similar way. This was true for me. As a child, I was assaulted by a neighbor, but instead of saying anything about it, I shut down my emotions and I pushed people away. When I experienced the loss of my loved one, I had an almost one year old and was pregnant with another baby. I was unaware of what I was doing at the time, but I kept myself busy (which was easy) and stuffed down my grief. I also threw up a wall between me and other people, so that I didn’t have to feel my pain.
When I wasn’t numb, I was angry. Mostly at God. I raged at Him for not intervening. And if you’ve known me for a while, then you probably know that when I get angry, my tendency is to give the cold shoulder. I ignored God. I refused to pray, to be in The Bible, and to be real with people around me who cared about me. I went on like this for a few months, and then Covid-19 shut down the world, my baby came, and I was quietly slipping away from God.
One afternoon (Day ?? of quarantine) the kids were both napping at the same time, so I was sitting on my bed hoping to veg out. What I should have been doing was reading the devotional book that our church was going through at the time. I was behind but was going to join a Zoom meeting that night with the women in my small group and maintain the pretense that I was fine. Out of nowhere, I had a clear thought pop into my head, “fight or die.” Now, I didn’t think I was literally about to die. That thought didn’t even occur to me. Deep inside, I knew what that thought was about. If I didn’t do something, anything, for my relationship with God then I was going to die spiritually. When I cracked open the devotional book to that day, the topic was do or die. God is funny like that.
What got me into the fight was not as dramatic. All it really was at first was just knowing that I had made a commitment to God when I was baptized. I do not like to renege on my promises. So, even though I did not have a desire to do what God wanted me to do, I did it anyways. It was not a super quick turnaround. It looked more like this: I picked up my daily Bible and read the scripture for that date, I became angry about something in the passage that day, I prayed to God and expressed my anger and asked Him to help me understand. Then I would text or call someone from my small group and tell them something real I was feeling. Repeat day after day. It wasn’t pretty, but it was obedience. Through this obedience, God gradually began to soften my heart to feel His nearness again and I was able to lower my walls and reconcile my relationships.
Most of the time people do want to heal from their pain, but, usually, we want to do either one or the other of these steps: we want to do it all on our own without involving anyone else, or we rely solely on other people and never learn to do the work on our own. Doing both is what brought blessing into my life.
What do I mean by “blessing”? This term is thrown around so often that it has become watered down when compared to what it means in the Bible. In the book How to Worship a King by Zach Neese, he explains, “biblical blessings catalyze destiny in people’s lives”, then he explains it like this: a blessing is what calls the diamond out of a piece of coal when it is still in the dirt.” That is very different than a momentary good feeling, it is a life-changing event that brings people closer to God. Jesus talks about being blessed through hardship and grief. Sounds crazy, right? Not when you consider the real meaning. Let’s insert the word “changes” (because “catalyzes destiny in people’s lives” is too long) alongside blessed to get a clearer picture of what Jesus is saying:
“God blesses[changes] those who are poor and realize their need for him,for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.God blesses[changes] those who mourn,for they will be comforted.God blesses[changes] those who are humble,for they will inherit the whole earth.God blesses[changes] those who hunger and thirst for justice,for they will be satisfied.God blesses[changes] those who are merciful,for they will be shown mercy.God blesses[changes] those whose hearts are pure,for they will see God.God blesses[changes] those who work for peace,for they will be called the children of God.God blesses[changes] those who are persecuted for doing right,for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.”**Matthew 5:3-10**
Choosing to take the difficult road, and journey with God through grief will grow your faith. Your attitude will become like these Beatitudes in Matthew 5 and you will receive their blessings. I don’t know why it works this way. I don’t know a lot of things. It makes no sense to me how my bitter heart could grow to love God just by being obedient to Him, but my faith is firmer now than it was before. All I know is that God’s ways have worked for me. I have also seen it work for countless people in my church who have worked to heal from their pain. So, if anyone who is reading this is drifting far from God and is feeling stuck in the desert of grief, I beg you to take a step in obedience and see where the road leads you.

The first time I heard the music at the Crossings Church, we were meeting at a small warehouse in Wentzville, MO. I didn’t know why I was there and, frankly, I wasn’t sure I liked it very much at all. Now, I’ve been leading worship, one way or another, for around eleven years (give or take a few months). God truly works in mysterious ways. My story is not about glorifying my talents or telling everyone how good I am; but unfortunately, for many years, that’s exactly what I thought it was all about.
I was baptized in March 2011. As many of us are when we first meet the Lord, I was completely on fire. All of the heavy emotional baggage I had long been carrying with me seemed to have vanished, or so I thought. I was convicted of my sins, and I ached to reach out to the lost souls around me. I wanted nothing more than to be an instrument of God. Within a year, I was leading a small group in my campus ministry, and leading worship for our early Sunday service. However, I quickly forgot just how determined the Father of Lies was at derailing followers of Christ from the truth.
One by one, the cracks slowly began to reveal themselves in my life. I soon discovered that, as a small group leader, I was a coward. I struggled to tell those entrusted to my care the hard truths that they needed to hear. When my friends and fellow leaders tried to help my leadership by pointing out this weakness in me, all I heard was, “you’re not good enough and you’ll never be good enough.” Later, I was pulled from my position in leadership. This was done in the most loving way possible, but despite all the love and encouragement I was given, I would only accept condemnation. Believing the lie, I quickly turned back to sexual sin and pornography for what I fooled myself into believing was love and affirmation. Too true is the saying in Proverbs 26:11; I was a dog, returned to my vomit.
Soon after that was a snowball effect of letting Satan have absolute control of my life. Even worse, I tried so hard to pass it off as piety. I continued to sing in front of the church every Sunday. I started dating someone spiritually mature, thinking that a relationship would help me look more put together. I started dating someone, only to bring them into my cycle of sin. As I took healing classes to try to deal with my trauma, I rejected grace and continued to believe I was a monster. Before Christ, I had spent much of my time victimizing others in response to my own trauma. In my mind, I was unforgivable.
So, this was the cycle that I continued to live in for several years: go to church on Sunday, say all the right things, smile and sing on stage, go home, return to my self-loathing and sin, rinse, repeat.
Despite my determination to self-sabotage, God would continue to fight His way back into my life. At a campus ministry conference, I heard someone who I respected speak openly about his experience as a victim of sexual abuse and the impact it had on his life. I was gutted. I had never heard someone speak about sexual abuse so openly or considered the effect my abuse had made on me. I felt a pit in my stomach that I tried to hide as I walked out of the auditorium, but a good friend of mine made eye contact with me and he just knew. He ran over to me and held me as I cried the hardest tears I had ever cried. It was a moment that could have been freeing, but I was determined to keep my heart hard. I would keep stuffing my pain. I would keep hiding my sin. I would keep whitewashing my tomb. I would keep acting religious. Later, I joined a team to plant a church in St. Louis.
“There’s no shadow you won’t light up,
mountain you won’t climb up,
coming after me.
There’s no wall you won’t kick down,
lie you won’t tear down,
coming after me.”
My walls had to be kicked down. Cracks had already started to show in the facade of fake faithfulness that I had built. My attitudes and actions were showing enough for my leaders to take notice and remove me from the spotlight at church, but I was still being given the opportunity to try and turn things around. All the while, I couldn’t break what had now become an addiction to pornography. When people I loved tried to ask me about it, I lied to their faces. It took being caught out for me to finally collapse and truly give God, and His people, a chance. I was embarrassed and ashamed, but I had never felt so loved and relieved at the same time. I had hurt a lot of people with my actions, but I was finally ready to give God a real chance.
Returning to the basics, I gave confession and community an honest chance. By confronting my childhood sexual abuse, I finally began to see the roots of my feelings and choices, and actually grasp onto the hope that God would heal and use me. God brought people into my life to show me how His truth works when it’s lived out, and I got to practice living it out myself. I began to see the beauty of an authentic life. I got to experience a new beginning in almost every area of my life. I started to see things how God intended them: friendships, a romantic relationship, healing, and worship. While it sometimes feels like I wasted so much time, I know now that God still uses those mistakes in my life to bless and teach others. As much as I sometimes want to hide from that part of my life and appear perfect, I know that it’s in my weakness that God shows His strength (2 Corinthians 12:9-11).
If any of my story resonates with you, I hope that you decide to give authenticity a chance. Believe me when I say: I know the temptation to want to appear perfect. So also trust that I know the consequences of trying to fake it until you make it. Without direct intervention, and being kicked onto my butt, I was headed for an eternal disaster, and I would have taken others with me. It’s an amazing experience to finally worship God with every part of my life and not to have to hide. God made us to be relational and He gave us Christ, because He knew we could never be perfect. So, don’t try to do it alone.

Can you imagine what it was like for the disciples when Jesus was arrested? Imagine completely upending your entire life because you were completely certain that the long-predicted savior, who your people had been told about for generations, had finally come. The one who would make everything right. The one who would take all of the broken things of this world and put them together again. You even witnessed his healing and miracles! He controlled the wind, and he provided food for those who were hungry exactly as God had done for your ancestors long before you were born. At the same time, you spent the past three years in his presence. He taught you, he loved you, he laughed with you, he ate with you, he tried to explain to you what was about to happen even though you aren’t totally sure what it all means.
Imagine being Peter, who as the Roman soldiers and priests approached Jesus to arrest him, “drew a sword and slashed the right ear of the high priest’s slave” (John 18:10). Peter was ready to fight for his savior, his friend! But instead, Jesus told him to put his sword away, and healed the man Peter struck. They wouldn’t be fighting this.
But Peter still followed behind. He stayed close as his savior was questioned, blindfolded, beaten, spit on, slapped, and prepared to be brought to the governor for execution on a cross. As Jesus refused to fight back, Peter’s world seemed to fall apart. His hope for the future, for Israel, for the world suddenly felt like despair. So when he was asked by others around him if he knew Jesus, he said no. His fear and despair overwhelmed him. He felt weak, and guilty for denying his friend. Then Peter “broke down and wept” (Mark 14:72).
Peter lost hope that day but he didn’t know what we now know.
He lost hope in that moment but after the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, Peter would never lose hope like that again. His savior was not really gone. When Jesus sacrificed himself, he covered the penalty for sin, he proved God’s great love, and made it so that, by following Jesus, we can each come confidently before God. Peter would never lose hope again.
He spent the rest of his life preaching the good news about Jesus despite the threats to his life, the beatings and arrests, and his eventually martyrdom in the circus of Nero.
Today, there is no reason to lose hope because, unlike Peter, we know the whole story. Jesus’ work on the cross and his resurrection have been completed! He is holding out his hand and wants so badly to pull us onto our feet and for us to follow after him. This means surrendering our ways for his ways.
We will all face hard things. We have and will face tragedy, loss, trauma. We will see horrible things going on in the world around us and mourn for what is happening. Many people experience these things and have no where to turn, but we have a God who comforts and saves. And He will absolutely comfort those who come to him.
We get to live with confidence because our God made a way for us and when we die, however tragic or ugly it may be, the very next moment will be the best moment of our entire existence. Because we will be with our good, holy, loving God. All because of what Jesus did for us on the cross.

I want to open up about a hurt I don’t talk about very often. It’s a pain I want to lock down tight because I am embarrassed. I minimize. I tell myself that in comparison to other heartache I have gone through, it shouldn’t even be a thing. But it is a thing, and if you have ever felt the pain of rejection, being unwelcome, and not fitting in then you know how deep the pain of feeling like an outsider can cut.
My senior year of high school was a rough one. I was never a social butterfly, but that year the few friends I did have decided they no longer wanted anything to do with me. To be fair, I understand. I was not a good friend. Roughly a year before, I had gone through trauma that I didn’t tell anyone about. I was depressed and angry. I was cynical. I held everyone at an arm’s length and, surely, to my friends, it felt like a rejection of them. Then a few months before the start of my senior year, I decided to become a Christian. I was no longer interested in pursuing a life of drinking, smoking, and sex and that became the last straw for those friends. They told me they did not want me around.
I remember the feeling of walking into the crowded cafeteria and scanning the tables to find anywhere that I could go sit, and maybe even make a new friend. I hoped that someone would see me looking around and wave me over. Or maybe just offer a small smile that would make it easier to approach them. Or maybe just look at me at all. I felt this sense of loneliness and social anxiety that left scratches all over my heart. A few times, I sat down at a table with someone who I was friendly with, though not really friends, hoping for the best. I talked with her and her friends, and successfully shoved down my insecurities for a while. As the table became more and more crowded and someone was left without a seat, it became painfully obvious that my spot was meant for someone else. Though everyone was too nice to point that out, it was incredibly awkward because we all knew. I quickly gave up on that approach. Instead, I started to look for other people who were sitting alone, but my presence was more tolerated than wanted. Once I thought I would try the television-inspired tactic and eat in the bathroom, but I couldn’t bear the thought of someone finding out that I was hiding. These kinds of lunchroom situations happened until graduation, and you better believe I could not have run out of that place fast enough.
That was one of the most humiliating seasons of my life. I so badly wanted to be brought in and accepted, but I was consistently cast aside and forgotten. Rejected. Alone. The feeling that there is something wrong with me and that I would not belong was reinforced every day, and the wounds sliced deeper and deeper. I began to hate myself for this longing to want to be known, but no matter how angry I felt, the longing never went away. I didn’t realize until later that the feeling would never go away because God created me to be known and loved by Himself and by His people. That love that can act like a healing balm over the deep wounds of the outsider.
Jesus was a healer. We see it time and time again in the gospels. He healed all kinds of physical ailments while also healing the heart. The story that has been most on my mind while writing down these memories is the story of the sick, bleeding woman in Mark 5:21-34. I want to give you some insight into what this woman’s life must have been like prior to this passage. She had been bleeding for twelve entire years. In her culture at this time, that would have given her the label of “unclean” and this meant a couple things that I know. Having the status of unclean often meant living outside of the community until a priest could proclaim you clean again. In this case, because her ailment was bleeding, she would have been separated from her husband during this time, that is if she had been married at all. If she was not married, then her status would have made finding a husband extremely difficult if not impossible. We also know from verse 26 that she tried to get better. She saw all the doctors she could until her money ran out, and yet no one could do anything for her. How hopeless she must have felt. She spent twelve long years on the outside desperate to get in. Then one day, she heard that Jesus, who had healed countless others, was close by. She thought that if she could push through the crowd and get near enough just to touch his clothes that it would be enough to heal her. She did. She was healed, and Jesus noticed her. He stopped walking, turned around, and said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you” (verse 34). Wow. Her physical suffering was over, but did you catch the other thing? He called her daughter. Jesus, who the Bible says all creation was made through and for (Colossians 1:16), noticed this person who was separated and cast aside by everyone else and called her his. “How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings” Luke 13:34b. God longs to bring us into his family.
Knowing God’s love for us is a huge step in healing the wounds of the past, so is embracing the love of the church. John 13: 34-35 says:
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
If we are believers, and call ourselves Christians, then we belong in the church. We are God’s family and are meant to be “little Christs” to one another in the way we love. It can be difficult for those of us who have been hurt to allow ourselves to be loved and harder still to love others. I know how hard it was for me to deconstruct the walls I built around my heart, and it’s a daily choice. For some people it happens slowly. But as we put in the effort to connect and to care for each other, we find healing for our hearts.
I want to end with another story that means a lot to me. I cry every time I tell it, and if I didn’t adequately explain my previous story then I leave people feeling very confused as to why. Here it is: I was a freshman in college and walking into the cafeteria after getting my lunch. Before I could even start scanning the tables, I heard someone excitedly yell in a sing song voice across the entire room, “Christyyyyyy!!!” It was one of the girls from the campus ministry at my church that I had become friends with. My face immediately turned scarlet, but I smiled with tears in my eyes. I had a place I belonged; I was wanted. That moment washed over my heart like a healing balm, and I knew for certain God’s family is where I was meant to be.

Acts 28:30-31 (NIV)
30 For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him. 31 He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ—with all boldness and without hindrance!
When I look at our “To be continued..” verse of this year and at the story of Paul, I am just so amazed at his boldness. I know that if I were in his spot, awaiting trail and chained to Roman guards, it would take everything in me not to shrink away and give up. Paul does the exact opposite. He continued to teach people about Jesus despite his poor circumstances. So how do we become bold in our teaching, like Paul? For one thing, we must value and understand the power of the Word of God.
We know that all scripture was inspired by God, or God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16). But have you ever really thought about what happened when God actually spoke aloud? In Mark 4:39, Jesus tells a storm to be quiet, and it does. In Mark 5:8-14, Jesus saves a man who had been possessed by spirits. Jesus says ,”come out of this man,” and they do. Then in Mark 5:39, news is brought that the daughter of the synagogue leader has died and Jesus responds, “the child is not dead but asleep,” and suddenly what he says becomes true. Everything God says is truth. From the very beginning, God only had to say, “let there be light,” and there it was (Genesis 1:3).
I have definitely been guilty of minimizing the Word at different times in my life. I have let grief and heartache, or just selfishness and bad priorities keep me from scripture. Let me tell you that if any of you are in a spot like that where you don’t want to be in your Bible that the first step is to do it anyways. God’s Word has the power to work in whatever circumstances we are in, and the more we know it the bolder we will be.

I grew up in a small town in Mississippi where nothing ever happened outside of family drama or the occasional drug addict disturbance in the neighborhood. I was raised primarily by my great-grandmother due to my mother being in college and my father not wanting to be in the picture.
My mother later moved to O’Fallon, MO due to untold family reasons and my father went on to start a new family. I was the only child at this stage and often felt misplaced and unwanted due to a lack of love and relationship with my parents.
With no real outlet, I started to have some behavioral issues that began to strain my relationship with my great-grandmother. One day, my great-grandmother told me that she wanted to kill herself because of me. That statement shook me to my core.
I was 10-years-old and fighting with thoughts of not being wanted, not being good enough, and then with this overwhelming feeling that I was just bad and unlovable. A few months went by and I found out that my mother was expecting another child with my soon-to-be stepdad and I was expected to move up to Missouri to be with them.
I made it to O’Fallon, MO when I was 11. I was excited for this new place with bright lights. I was joyful to be a big brother to my new baby sister and to be with my mother for the first time. We lived with my great aunt and her son who was in his mid to late 20s. I struggled to adapt to the mid-western ways. Everything was too fast for me and the people weren’t as nice as compared to the south. I started to feel that familiar feeling of being misplaced.
My grades struggled in a new school environment and it was tough to fit in. With my struggles in school, my parents came down on me hard. Stripping my room down to only a bed, desk, and an entertainment center with a tv that was to never come on till I brought my grades up. I struggled to make that happen for over two years. In that time, I only went to school and sat in my room with the occasional freedom of a birthday weekend or a rare break given.
I ate separately from my family and felt like an outcast. In those two years I became extremely depressed. I remember picking at the same hole in the wall, just sitting and staring, or sobbing myself to sleep, hoping that someone would just maybe want to understand me or how I was feeling. My depression was a huge weight on my shoulders throughout my teenage years and early 20s- where the pressures of life and becoming an adult pushed me to my limits.
During my senior year of high school, I was separated from my family because we became homeless. Fortunately, I was able to live with the head football coach of my high school and his family. This experience had a huge impact on what I thought a family was supposed to be. They did everything together, though I still had this sense of being out of place. It just felt amazing to be a part of a loving family environment.
Even though I was a part of this amazing family, my thoughts and struggles with self-worth were reaching a breaking point throughout the year I was there. The fear of what was to come after high school continued to build, especially since my grades were poor. So playing football in college was going to be an uphill battle, one I would eventually lose.
After high school, I moved back in with my parents. It was the strangest thing going back into that family dynamic, where isolation and division were so prominent.
My relationship with my mother deteriorated quickly and the lack of relationship with my father and stepfather seemed to be affecting me more and more. When I was 19-years-old, the overwhelming feeling of unworthiness, not feeling any type of real love, not having anything to look forward to, and being unwanted took me to my breaking point.
I attempted suicide with a cocktail of pills. I remember feeling cold and shaking violently. My heart felt like it was pounding out of my chest. Soon after it was just darkness. I woke up to my youngest sister playing in my room, and though I felt like death was what I deserved, I was relieved to see her face. I continued to have depression and suicidal thoughts. I tried to drown them with sex and shallow toxic relationships. The dysfunction became normal, but in the midst of one of these toxic relationships, a little bit of light started to shine through.
I crossed paths with some amazing members of The Crossings Church. It was a little awkward at first because I wasn’t used to people showing interest in getting to know the real me. It took some time but I eventually began to study the Bible and open more and more of myself up to God and the people he placed in my life.
I left the toxic relationship with my girlfriend behind to explore this newfound hope- a treasure hidden in the field I had come to find. I fully embraced this church family. I had finally found the love and acceptance I was looking for, spiritually and physically. I felt one with the Holy Spirit and gave my life to Christ in 2016.
Life has never been the same since. I now have a purpose in life in giving others the same love I found in Christ and his people. A purpose that is bigger than me. I have married my beautiful wife and have two stepdaughters by the grace of God, who strive to be a light and difference in this world. I now have faith that I can repair and deepen my relationship with my parents.
Even though my depression struggles haven’t just vanished, I now have hope founded in the word of God. Where I may fall short and feel broken, I know now I have the word and God’s people to pick me up, to lean on, and fill the cracks.

The Rebuilding

as i looked upon the gray painted walls
all i could see were the cracks
how broken
shattered
and fragmented they were
yet each fracture was unified
held by one another
determined to keep fighting
as i entered the garden
what was once an abundance of flowers
was now withering away
even then
that didn’t stop new seeds from being scattered
as the storm awakened
my world trembled
and everything around me collided
my feet stood firm
rooted with the seeds in the ground beneath me
my hands
held by my brothers and sisters
we were broken
shattered
fractured
yet unified
my heart
ached from what was soon to come
the destruction of everything we had made
but as i looked at the flowers emerging from the ground
how united we were
how much love our home was built upon
and how we all stood firm
in the eye of the storm
it wasn’t the beginning nor the end of the story
but everything in between
it wasn’t the start nor finish
it was the vision
the determination
the hope
the reaching
the failing
the love
the breaking
and the mending
it was the rebuilding

I grew up in a rural area in Missouri that was 18 miles outside of town. I had an older brother and have a sister, plus a twin brother. I lived a very sheltered life as a child. I was only around family, church, and school. I grew up thinking there were no bad people in the world. I was very open and trusting. My parents never showed any anger or had disagreements in front of us kids. I never saw my parents argue until way into my adult life. I grew up believing in God and going to a Baptist church. I was baptized at 12-years-old. Life was great, I dreamed of being a mother and a wife someday. I wanted to be like my mom but have more than 4 children.
My world changed at 15-years-old when I went through menopause and realized that I could not have children. I felt rejected and worthless. I wondered, “Who would ever want me now?” I remember hearing in church that women are supposed to bear children and provide a loving home and be a companion to their husband. I kept asking myself, “What is my life good for if I cannot do these things?”
I started thinking I was going to need to move far away so that I wouldn’t be reminded of these things.
My older brother was in the Navy stationed in California, so that was my way out. I thought if I could move in with him that things would work out. Then my older brother, at 23-years-old, died tragically in a motorcycle accident. After his death I shut down. I lost hope and became cold and distant. I had felt so close to my older brother. I thought I would not make it past 23-years-old, the same as him.
At this point, I started drinking and using drugs. After high school, I moved to St Louis and stopped having anything to do with church. Church, at that time, just reminded me of my failures. I used my body to get what I wanted, since my body had no purpose to me. Then I was sexually assaulted by different men, one was a trusted family member. I always thought it was my fault, I put myself in that situation and I deserved what I got. I put myself in bad situations so that maybe I wouldn’t wake up the next day. I would wake up in places I had no idea where I was, but I was alive, so I felt like a failure again. “Why GOD? Why are you keeping me alive?” I was distant from my family but I always knew my mother was praying for me and figured that’s how I kept surviving.
Then I met my first husband and for the first time I was in love and felt loved. I started thinking that maybe I did have a future. He had two young children and didn’t want any more, which seemed perfect. I was happy for a time. Towards the end of our 13 years together, he became a full alcoholic. To avoid his drinking, I started drinking and using more than I already had been. After I felt some physical abuse, I moved out. He died from a heart attack about a year later. We ended on bad terms, and his family blamed me for his death. I was not allowed to go to the funeral per the kids’ request. I lost a husband, son, daughter, and a grandson. I was devastated and turned to things that helped me avoid dealing with it even more.
Later, I married my current husband. He also had 2 children and didn’t want anymore, so I committed to helping him raise them. The boys have different mothers, so this gave us many challenges. I thought, “Ok God, this is my destiny. Here are children that need a mother figure that is constant and reliable.” The problem with that was that I tried to fill that role without God’s help. So again, I felt like a failure. We struggled for a long time. After the boys were old enough and moved out, I was separated from my husband for about 18 months. We are together now and continuing to work on our relationship.
During this time, I was overworked at my job and started having panic attacks along with chronic migraines. “You are a failure,” kept ringing in my head. I wanted to give up but was reminded of a friend of mine. I remember this friend was kind, happy, encouraging, and proud to show that she loved God. I met her after she began her relationship with God, then I learned of her past and was amazed at how happy she was, and how she was able to let go of her anger. Then one day, I decided I wanted to be happy again and realized everything I was doing was not working. I was missing something, and it was God. I finally started seeking God. I was listening to Bott Radio every time I was in the car, and that’s also when I started talking to God. The more I listened, the more my heart wanted to be close to GOD. I wanted a church family. I tried different churches around town but was not able to connect. There was no support from my husband or children. My first service at The Crossings was at the Temporary Hotel Location. I was immediately welcomed by Stephanie. I could tell right away her heart belonged to God. I am thankful for her giving/loving heart. I kept coming back and joined a bible study. I was baptized in 2020, and this time I felt the Holy Spirit enter my heart. The feeling was so overwhelming with joy. I continue to grow and yearn to learn more about God.
Beginning in my early 20’s, I started having migraines. They have progressed into chronic migraines and after the many, many treatments I have tried, they continue today. I am currently very sensitive to light, smell, and sound. Loud noises, crowds, make it difficult for me to communicate. So, if you’re trying to talk to me and I am not answering, I might be locked up in pain and cannot find the words. The pain is so intense at times that I cannot breathe. The fall weather change is the hardest time of year for my migraines. During that time, I miss out on so much fellowship it saddens me.
With all the challenges of life and migraines, I can get depressed very easily. I have to force myself to get up and move. I have learned that my past was not all failures. God has shown me that my past has given me knowledge and I should use that knowledge to help others. I am not a failure. I am a Child of God, and I am never alone. I used to have the fear of dying alone and now that fear is gone. I will have the LORD with me always. I deal with intense pain on a daily basis, and I believe that someday I will be without pain. If it takes until I am in heaven, then I am ok with that because I know the Lord is walking with me in this life. I feel very grateful and thankful to be alive today. I love to help anyone with anything I am able to. Thank you Lord, every day, Thank you Lord.

Truth #1: The current world is subject to pain and “groaning”, but it won’t last.
Romans 8:20-25
20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.” 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.
Truth #2: God sees us, hears us, and is working in this situation for the good of those who love Him.
Romans 8:26-28
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Truth #3: Disciples of Christ have nothing to fear.
Romans 8:31-39
31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
Truth #4: God promises disciples victory and rest in His Love no matter what.
Romans 8:35-39
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: ‘For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’ 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
