In the most recent edition in the storied college basketball rivalry between Duke and the University of North Carolina, Blue Devils' star Zion Williamson lost his footing trying to make a cut in the first minute of the game, causing his Nike basketball shoe to fall apart.
Fortunately, he only suffered a mild knee sprain.

Many college coaches from rural or suburban campuses, with a largely white population, hesitate to try and recruit inner-city student-athletes to their programs.
"Why would they want to come here? It's so different from where they grew up."
"There's nothing to do here compared to the city they're from."
"They probably don't have the grades to be admitted here, because their high school isn't in a very good area."

The recruiting scandal that broke in late September of 2017 rocked the college sports world.
News that the FBI had indicted a number of coaches who engaged in illegal recruiting activities tied to payments made to prospects' families by shoe companies in exchange for playing for those coaches' schools.

He coaches at a small Division III school that has to play Division I opponents. His university is a frozen tundra five months out of the year. And, he plays in a facility approaching three decades old.
And he just won his second NCAA national championship in four years.
His name is Matt Derosiers, and he's the head women's hockey coach at Clarkson University. What he's accomplished in building his program is pretty amazing, when you really look under the hood and realize that he has had to overcome many of the things that most coaches swear keep them from succeeding.

Early recruiting has been an ongoing debate around college athletics for years.
Recently, one coaches organization took steps to push back against the growing trend. The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association proposed new limits on early contact between coaches and recruits, and those changes were accepted by the NCAA.
Our guest today is Rob Harris, head women's lacrosse coach at Davenport University in Michigan. He has a unique perspective on this as a successful college coach at many levels, as well as a director of a club lacrosse program. He see's the debate from both sides, and talks about his thoughts on the new rules.

Lots of college coaches say, "How am I supposed to 'sell' my recruits on my program when I really have never been taught to sell?"
That's the same question today's guest was asking himself 35 years ago. He was winding down a successful career in the music industry. He had written a hit #1 Billboard song, and had been touring with a band he helped get together, convinced that they were going to become, in his words, "the next Beatles".
It didn't work out that way. Music tastes changed, and Jim had to re-invent himself. He chose sales, and learned to be successful.

On March 29, 2017, the University of North Dakota athletic department announced that due to budget cuts, the women's hockey team, as well as the men's and women's swimming program, was being eliminated.
It was shocking to a community that loves hockey. And the program had established itself as one of college women's hockey best programs under the guidance of the coach who helped revive the program, Brian Idalski and his staff of longtime assistant coaches.
For many programs, that news would be the end of the story. But in this case, it's not.
The team and the coaches quickly decided to try and fight the decision, and save the program. On today's edition of College Recruiting Weekly, we chronicle the inside story of how a coaching staff and their players reacted at the news no college coach wants to hear, how they helped their players through the disappointment, and their plan for saving their program.
We also talk to a coach and athletic director at another college who faced the same challenge, and managed to be part of a solution that resulted in saving their campus from closing permanently.
There's also an unexpected twist at the end of today's episode. But then again, it's not really the 'end'...or is it?
This episode is meant to instruct coaches on the right way to handle a crisis like this, using the outstanding example of Coach Idalski and his staff, as well as the outstanding young athletes on the team. This is their personal story, and we hope that other college coaches can learn from it.
