The fourth and final chapter of Ruth provides several reminders for us about hope and redemption. For Naomi and Ruth, hope comes in the form of Boaz who ends up redeeming the land belonging to Naomi’s deceased husband and taking Ruth as his wife. This act by Boaz allows Naomi and Ruth to have a better future than they could have ever imagined after all of the pain and suffering they endured when they lost their loved ones. As it turns out, Boaz is not the only redeemer in this story. Boaz and Ruth have a son, Obed, who is part of the lineage of David and subsequently Jesus, the ultimate source of hope and redemption.
In the midst of crisis, Ruth makes an incredible promise to her mother-in-law Naomi. Her vow was attacked immediately by the context of her life—namely the radical cultural differences of the two women and their uncertain positions in society. How often do we allow the context of our lives to justify why we break our promises? Ruth’s faithfulness to Naomi is a powerful lesson in understanding the invisible currency in our relationships: promises. Each time we break or keep a promise, we weaken or strengthen the relationship. We all move in the direction of the promises we believe in; therefore, we need to believe more in the promises of God and live them out with faithfulness while we wait for God to fulfill His promises in our lives.
The book of Ruth is a love story focused on the lives of two women, Ruth, of course, and her mother-in-law, Naomi. However, the story does not start out the way love stories typically do. It starts with Naomi losing her husband and two sons, one of whom was Ruth’s husband. Even though she felt immense pain, Naomi was not afraid to be honest about her grief and bitterness. She wasn’t preoccupied with getting answers and she didn’t blame herself. Instead, she continued to trust God and pray for those around her. Naomi’s faithfulness to God’s plan in the midst of such a tragedy was the catalyst for Ruth’s decision to convert and follow God. Naomi’s story has a lot to teach us about how we should behave when we are faced with difficult and painful seasons in our own lives.
