Kids, what are we watching tonight?: Recent Episodes

A Dad And Two Daughters

A father and two daughters review films together, and that's when the arguing starts. Usually its me (Dad) trying to get the girls to watch (what I consider) classic films from the 70's, 80's and 90's, but we love all movies, so we cover loads of stuff, new and old. Like you, we want to be entertained, and my hope is that, not only do we entertain you, but the films I pick entertain the girls as well....or I never hear the end of it. Join us as I try to educate them, and they try to stop me forcing 'rubbish old films' on them. Find all our social media and main podcast platforms here - https://linktr.ee/kwawwtpodcast

Last year I read the book Dune and compared it to the 1984 movie, and it just so happened the first trailer for the new version of Dune came out, so I spoke about that too. If your interested, you can find my original Dune episode is here - in it I go into the story a bit more and where I though the new version would end.

In this episode I talk about Denis Villeneuve's version, how it compares to what I can remember happens in the book, and what this does right, and wrong, compared to the 1984 version.

Once upon a time ...... A man went to have a memory of a holiday imprinted in his mind...and then Isla lost track of what was happening!! No seriously. She had NO IDEA what was going on!!It's still one of the greatest "is it real/isn't it?" movies of all time. Is Doug Quaid a construction worker having a schizoid embolism after having a memory implant, or is he actually a spy from Mars, sent to Earth to infiltrate the resistance on Mars after going for a memory implant that ERASES the previous memory implant.....wait - that sounds like Bullshit!!

In this episode, besides Isla getting annoyed at the film ending without explaining if its true or not, we discuss death by vacume, how the ozone layer works, how vape is one step up from Apple Juice (on for the 'young audience') and how to deliver the movies greatest line!!

Once upon a time ...... A woman went for a drive with some stolen property. She picked up a man, a Mad Man, and together they tried to get to freedom. However, having driven so far away, they turned round and drove back, much to the surprise of their pursuers!!
The greatest action movie ever, or the most pointless road trip ever? This week we discuss Nieve's holiday movie Mad Max : Fury Road. As per usual we have Uncle Argyle telling us a story, Bang For Your Buck, Where Have I Seen Them Before and Are You Not Entertained.

Along with that we talk about the cars, Nieve gives us a History lesson on Valhalla and how Imortan Joe has twisted the concept of Norse Heaven and Mythology to his own ends, and Isla tells us about the conditions required to prioritise the birth of boys over girls. We take our education very seriously here at KWAWWTPodcast HQ.

Once Upon A Time ...... There were a team of immortal superhero's who were sent to protect the Earth.

Last week we went to the cinema to see Marvels latest offering, and today we ruin it.  Honestly, no stone is left unturned, no spoiler is left .... unspoiled.

We talk sexiest team, the post credit scenes, and how cows are born.  On top of all that we bash Spiderman, who's power is rubbish and why the deviants feel ripped off.  Its a MONSTER MARVEL DISCUSSION, and if you enjoyed the show please leave a review in Podchaser - it helps us grown and makes us look good.  Otherwise please review us wherever you listen to us.

Once upon a time ...... A family walked into HMV and bought movies they'd never seen before. They took them on holiday, watched them, then talked about them. Today we discuss Isla's pick - VANQUISH.
They say don't judge a book by it's cover, but does that also apply to DVD's? Having struck out with Hummingbird last holiday, Isla tried to redeem herself by choosing a film staring Morgan Freeman, because Morgan Freeman would never make a bad film - would he?

Does she make up for last holiday's faux pas? Is Morgan Freeman still putting out 'quality movies? Are subtitles expensive? How does a corrupt cop henchman have such a stunning jaw line and cheek bone structure on a policeman's wage?

We discuss this, and more, and if you enjoyed our show please leave a review in Podchaser - it helps us grown and makes us look good. Otherwise please review us wherever you listen to us. You can also find us in the following places. Subscribe and join the conversation with our community.

Last year we came up with a brilliant idea, by our standards, for a Holiday Movie Challenge. Each of us would buy a movie we had never seen before - it could be old, new, Western, SciFi....WHATEVER. The only rule was it had to be age appropriate. We would then reveal our movies, watch them and then do an episode on each one.

This year, we're doing it again (because we didn't have any better ideas), so this is our movie reveal episode. We will be releasing episodes on each film over the coming weeks, and you can listen to last years Holiday Movie Challenge in the links below:-

Rules and Reveal
Titanic (and the films of James Cameron)
Hummingbird
The Personal Life Of David Copperfield
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

*Once upon a time ...... There was a boy called Michael Myers.

And he killed people!!.
This week, our
TOP 100 Movie Challenge*continues as we talk about one of the original slasher movies, and the film that created new type of horror 'monster'. Michael Myers has endured for over 40 years, but do the teenagers of today still find the original scary?. Do they understand its relevance to modern horror?. Do they care?

We talk about his first kill, his escape, how much driving he has to do, why women in the 70's didn't wear bra's, why no one uses light switches, and how the hell did Dr Loomis not notice his stolen car across the street!!!

*Once upon a time ...... There was a water ride at a Disney theme park that someone thought would make a good film (??!?!), so they grabbed a pen and some paper, and set about writing a script filled with curses, pirates, love and swashbuckling.

The film was very OTT, everyone loved the main character who was a drunken bum, there was indeed swashbuckling, rum, love, curses, pirates, rum and strumpets, and thus began a franchise.*

This week, our TOP 100 Movie Challengecontinues as we talk about Captain Jack Sparrow, Barbosa, Norrington, Turner, Swan, over inflated budgets and rum. Uncle Argyle tells us a story, we talk Bang For Your Buck and play Are you Not Entertained!!. Here's the handy link to our original episode on Pirates 1, 2, 3 (4 & 5). Once Upon A Time ...... *In an overly 80's Santa Clara, there was a Vampire problem.

Michael, who has just moved to the town with his family, meets David and his friends, who are not what they seem, all because he has the hots for Star. It's up to his brother Sam and the Frog Brothers, a couple of comic shop workers, to save Michael, and the town.*

Everyone who was anyone in the 80's watched the Lost Boys. It was the definitive vampire movie of the decade....is WAS the 80's - we discuss how 80's it is!!. But how does it stand up against modern sparkly vampires, and against modern horror films - is it even considered a horror film.

As our TOP 100 Movie Challengecontinues, we look at the fashion, the gore and talk about the music. Does this deserve to be on a 'Classic' film list?. For this episode based on Black History I'm going back to the Detroit Riots of 1947, something I knew nothing about, and the murder of two young black men.

The start of the film is interspersed with real footage from the streets and news reels, showing what was happening at the time and how things escalated, and this definitely lends a sense of legitimacy to the film. Then its the roller coaster ride of what happened next.

A brave, but sadly not profitable film, though its been well received by critics and fans alike. if you enjoyed the show please leave a review in Podchaser - it helps us grown and makes us look good. Otherwise please review us wherever you listen to us.

Once Upon A Time ...... *There was great sword, Green Destiny, and it was stolen. The owner of the sword, Li Mu Bai, came to reclaim it, but found a potential student in the thief, however the thief didn't want to be trained. They wanted to be free, but freedom is different for everyone.

The intertwining stories of Jade Fox, Li, Jen and Yu Shu Lien, are played out around the changing ownership of a sword, with some AMAZING martial arts.*

Our TOP 100 Movie Challengecontinues with the absolute eye candy that is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Much like her first choice in our Alphabet Challenge, Ip Man, Isla felt the need for a martial arts movie, but does this STILL cut the mustard as far as action goes?. And it's not just any style of action - this is traditional wire work kung fu - used in a way not seen in many modern action films.

We talk about the action, the women, the look, and does this movie get Bang for its Buck? Listen in and find out, and if you enjoyed the show please leave a review in Podchaser - it helps us grown and makes us look good. Otherwise please review us wherever you listen to us.

It's October, and everyone appears to be doing horror movies, so I've gone for something different. I wanted to create content to do with Black History Month....but I'm a white middle aged guy from Scotland, so while I may not be the best person to talk about Black History, I'm still going to talk about it because it's a vital conversation.

I wondered how to get the ball rolling, and lets be honest, who doesn't like music?. Steve Wonder, Nina Simone, Gladys Knight & the Pips? All great performers, great musicians, and all at the 1969 Harlem Culture Festival. A festival that was filmed, then forgotten about, until this year.

I talk a little bit about the politics, the fashion, the music, and how the festival was organised. I'll admit I don't think I did a great job, I was a bit nervous, but this is a great documentary for any music lover, and deserves to be seen, so put away the chainsaws and horror masks, and enjoy some music for your soul!!

Once Upon A Time ...... *There was a general, who commanded the Emperors armies, but when a new emperor rose, the general was cast down and became a slave, only to return to as a Gladiator, and seek vengeance for the wrongs done to him.

Sounds pretty bloody awesome!!*

Nieve starts our TOP 100 Movie Challengewith the Oscar winning sword and sandals EPIC Gladiator. I love this movie. I saw it five or six times in the cinema when it came out because it had that big screen, classic movie look and feel, but is it still as amazing to today's teenagers? Does the subtle politics, the shifting mental state of the Emperor, and the gladiatorial action still stir the soul?

Costumes, camera crews, quotes, as well as new sections where have I seen them before, bang for your buck and cinema side dishes ..... and an appearance by Uncle Argyle.

Once Upon A Time ...... There was a girl assassin that screwed up, even though maybe she didn't. The Firm she worked for tried to kill her, so her Mum, who abandoned her years before for doing pretty much the same thing, appears out of no where, along with three other butt kicking women, and together they kick butt.

Finally the people of the UK get to watch the Karen Gillan action John Wick / Kingsman mash up Gunpowder Milkshake, even though its been out on Netflix in the states since July (not that we're bitter). But is it up there with John Wick and Kingsman?. As Nebula, Karen G kicked a lot of ass and did some funky action - how well does she do here?

The Tomorrow War does a descent job as a sci-fi film - it's not bad, but its not great.  In short though, it's not $200million well spent.  Would it have made back its budget in the cinema?  We'll never know, but what could be done better?

Are there story issues that could be fixed?, SFX looking a bit ropey?, acting issues?  In this episode Daddy casts his critical eye, and calls upon his film knowledge to try to improve, and 'fix' the Tomorrow War, and maybe even deliver a sequel or two!.

Ten rings, two siblings and a Dad.  Sound familiar?

That's because it's us reviewing Shang Chi, the new Martial Arts Super Hero Action Comedy (MASHAC?) from Marvel, and it's a biggie.

We talk cinema, new characters, how to spell Awkwafina, how Nine Inch Nails are credited for Old Town Road, and the many nods to the king of kung-fu action comedy (KFAC) Jackie Chan.  As the first new hero post Snap, how well does Marvel handle, not only a new character, but a character with roots deep in Chinese mythology and culture.

Loads of stuff get's blown up, there's swoopy camera shots, massive robots, bad jokes, gratuitous 'Hot Girl' shots and a terrible plot - it can only be a Michael Bay film, so let the #Bayhem commence.

Daddy talk about his love for Gen1 Transformers and recounts Isla's birth. Nieve talks about how much she hates Transformers, and how Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is so much better (yes, the Michael Bay produced one), and Isla talks sentience, war and George Clooney for President!!

Back for a third time this week, and I'm talking ghost stories, but very much like The Devils Backbone, there's a mystery to solve along the way. Certainly more Supernatural Thriller then horror, but not in a The Conjuring type way. However in a very Conjuring 2 / Annabell Creation way, this film has great performances by the two young girls (Kiera Thompson &
Sienna Sayer) as both the ghost and the daughter solving the mystery.

Hat's off to Ruth Platt for a having a really interesting and original ending - I didn't see it coming, but then I'm thick. Don't worry though, its not spoiled, so go watch the movie first, then come back here and listen to the show.

Another Edinburgh Film festival premier. I had to stream this one though, using the Film House At Home (Link Below) because I couldn't make the time and the showing had sold out, however I'm very excited to talk about this A.I. goes wrong animation by Ryan Braund.

Is it AI goes wrong? Is it obsession?. I mean, I love sci-fi, and this covers a whole load of topics, and ideas that appeal to me, and includes a few nods to previous AI's and sci-fi greats. I talk about the animation and Ryan's work during lock down, as well as Iain M Banks, Pi, Aphex Twins, I fawn over twitter interactions, "Love, Death and Robots" gets a shout out, going mad and that the presence of clarity (that one's a bit deep for me!!)

Ladies and Gentlemen, Nicolas Kim Coppola, aka, Nic Cage, has returned and he's riding into Tinsel Town on a Pig.

While this, on paper, could be seen as a cheap John Wick rip off, it's far removed from the hyper action bullet fest franchise. Actually it's probably at the opposite end of the spectrum, because not only is it about a man and his pig, its about fathers and son's, happiness, food and cooking.

You never saw John Wick make French Toast, did you?

On this episode I'm talking the European Premiere and opening night of the Edinburgh Film Festival 2021. I try to act all 'established' amongst film high society, my failed attempts to get a press pass, the meaning of success and what Pig is all about.

I also think Nic will get an Oscar nomination for this. Just saying.

I was a MASSIVE X-Files fan back in 1994. As a young student, the whole flat used to get the beers in, camp out on the couch, eat Doritos, and dream of working a job with Gillian Anderson every Thursday night. Invariably we'd end up heading to the pub, discussing the episode, then staggering home at 1am because that's what students do.

Now, 27 years later, at the end of our Alphabet Movie Challenge, I found a way to revisit those glorious student days with my kids (without the excessive drinking and staggering). "I Want To Believe" is classic X-File storytelling - psychics, weird science, experimental procedures, and Mulder and Scully arguing over the validity of what they're doing.

We discuss the original X-files series, Pilot Episodes, Dr Isla gives us the low down on stem cells (its really interesting), getting up for school and Nieve nearly breaks down in tears at the thought of watching Top Gun....and it being good.

We answer that burning question on everyone's lips this week - is Free Guy just PG Deadpool?  Actually we also answer the "is it any good" question too, but does that matter?  It's a Ryan Reynolds movie in which he does Ryan Reynolds things, much like Hitmans Bodyguard, 6 Underground, Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard and his cameo in Hobbs & Shaw.  He doesn't do any Green Lantern things though thank god!!

We also discuss cameo's, the villains, love and crossing the road, streamers and a very special sock joke that took me a while to understand.

We've had Snakes on a Plane, a Flight of the Living Dead (see what they did there?), and weird sky gremlin thing Shadow in the Clouds. Now we add to this illustrious list Blood Red Sky - a Vampire on a plane movie.

But this is no ordinary Vampire, she's a mother, and perhaps more important, she's not the villain. This, much like Let The Right One In, is an original take on Vampires and vampireism, and the characters are not what you think. Certainly they dont act how they're expected to.

As I mentioned here's a link to our Fear Street and Riders of Justice episodes.

Holmeses? Holmez? Holmes's? They all look weird to me.

Pluralised non-possessive surnames aside, Nieve pulls an absolute belter out of no where this week!!! Having her pick a film from 1985 was a real shock - totes proud and what not, but not being able to guess what it was really annoyed me (as you can hear).

This film had MASSIVE pedigree behind the camera, a veritable who's who of films to come, but was a flop in the end. So we discuss the use of puppets, the first ever CGI character, the love interest , surnames backwards and some awesome sword fighting.

Is this a classic kids movie? Is it too scary and unbelievable to have been anything other then a failure? Listen in to find out what we thought.

It's not very often we watch all the big film releases of the week, and with 3 streaming sites to cover, its a lot harder, but we managed to see both The Suicide Squad (review episode here) and Jungle Cruise over the weekend.

In this episode Nieve and I talk about the use of CGI, the characters, the (obvious) comparissions to The Mummy (1999 version, not the Tom Cruise abomination), the Pirates of the Caribbean rip off and whether or not I can remember the Jungle Cruise ride from Disney World circa 1996/97.

We also discuss what Jungle Cruise's use of special effects could mean for Dwaynes up coming Black Adam movie, because it'll be helmed by the same director.

As a final note, here's a link to our V for Vendetta episode, which we mention right at the end.

There is nothing better then going to see an awesome movie on your Birthday. Even though I'm now 47, it reminds me of the time I went to see Return of the Jedi for a friends birthday and it was AWESOME, but is birthday cinema The Suicide Squad that awesome? SPOILER - YES IT IS!!!. It's so awesome I edited this episode to leave out some MAJOR spoilers so as not to ruin it for those who have yet to get access to it.

We talk about how much we want a King Shark pet (and how to pronounce his name....we think), we talk John Cena's acting (vs Fast 9), Harley Quinn, James Gunn, the gore, the jokes.....LOADS OF STUFF.....just not all the stuff.

Oh, we talk the end credit scene too, which is interesting but doesn't ruin anything. Get The Suicide Squad in your eyes, get this episode in your ears

That's right - No spoilers, because I'm a grown up and I can do that, and because I really enjoyed it and want others to enjoy it too.

Mads Mikkelsen has been doing awesome work for a long time (listen to Filmfloggers talk Another Round - link here), and once again he nails this one along with a great cast of actors. The characters are weird and lovable, the story has so many other things going on that it's not just an Action Comedy, but its also not an American Action Comedy either. In the 'Hollywood Studio System' this probably would have been butchered and ended up like a Death Wish or Peppermint - more of a revnge thriller - it's been created with more care, and all the characters get their time to shine.

It's a short episode, so if your interested, please go see it, or listen then go see it (because I don't spoil anything).

Also a quick plug for the Edinburgh Filmhouse who were voted 4th best cinema in the UK yesterday AND announced their International Film Festival programme, some of which is available online (handy link). It's been a long time since I was there, so I was glad to be back.

Sleep overs are nothing new - we've all stayed at friends houses when we were younger, watched films, eaten sweets and stayed up WAY past our bed times!!.

Recently Nieve stayed at a friends house and they watched a couple of films that really interested me. I was actually surprised that they even watched them since they were 'OLD', but what better time to watch scary movies then with friends?.

In this episode we discuss the original Final Destination, but also talk about parts two and three (which they also watched) and a little bit about the Saw franchise. For someone who hates 'scary movies' (she refused to watch Birdbox and Quiet Place), we talk about why she liked these and what she thinks of horror.

I was reluctant to let youngest watch this film due to a, in my opinion, inappropriate and pointless scene involving a transmitter and a young ladies fairy glen. I cringed at it, it's tasteless, but fortunately Eldest felt the same way, so they fast forwarded past it.

Once that was dealt with I had no problem with the cannibalism, drug use, swearing, use of a meat grinder to kill people or the electrified lasso used to cut people in half.

In this episode we talk about how the nasal passage could have been used instead of pixy hollow, Poppy as a villain, the return of Harry, and the best cuts of meat on a human. You know, regular stuff.

Over the course of three weeks Netflix released the Fear Street Trilogy, consisting of 1994, 1978 and 1666. Each week I did a short podcast, reacting to the film, and the preceding films where applicable, then stuck them all together et VOILA!!! Three episodes in one.

I have said there are limited spoilers because, even though we discuss plot, and deaths, and gore and emo teens (a lot), I've tried very hard not to reveal a few character details, like who controls the witch and who survives Camp Nightwing. If you've not managed to watch the trilogy yet, those details will not ruin your enjoyment.

All that aside, how horrific are these films? Do they do a good job of representing their respective times? Given they start/end in 1994, will there be, and should there be, sequels that a closer to today (2000, 2015 & 2021 for example).

Credit to Netflix, this was something new from them, and something new from me, so I hope you enjoy both.

This weekend the family and some friends crashed on our couches, and we watched the first new MCU Movie in just over two years, and the first to be released on Disney+.

While not set post Endgame for obvious reasons, we discuss its place in the release schedule, and ask the most pertinent question - Should we have had this movie in 2016, after Civil War?.

We also talk about all the regular stuff that makes an MCU film an MCU film, as well as broken noses, plot armour, sexy parents, and trying to fit into old clothes, but like Captain America before her, has the mantle of Black Widow successfully been handed on to the next action actress?. Where do we see her story going?.

Whenever the "based on a true story" text comes onscreen at the start of a film, I usually always question how true it is, or how how close to the truth it stayed. Yes, the truth isn't always entertaining, and entertainment is rarely historically accurate, but I feel American Animals is different.

It's a docu-drama / crime movie in one, but its really original in that, not only are the original protagonists in the film, there are scenes where the actors interact with their real life characters. It uses some great 4th wall stuff to question events, places, people, ect ect.

I had this on a "to watch" list for ages. Listen in to see if I actually enjoyed it.

Second last episode.  Things are getting really interesting now, but on top of this weeks going's on's, we ask the really important questions LIKE:-

1 - Who would you cast as Classic Variant Thor opposite Richard E Grant's Classic Variant Loki?

2 - If Loki and Sylvie fall in love, and were to have a baby, what would happen since they're the same person?

No weird theories from Nieve, and details on next weeks series final special recording (?!?!?) of the podcast.

Enjoy.

This film has been on my "not watched and probably should have" for a long time.  My relationship with Coen Brother movies has not been smooth (check out my NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN episode), but it popped up on Netflix and I decided if I started it, I'd probably watch it.

I have now seen it.  It's absolutely a Coen Brother movie in it's quirkiness, its characters and the events that happen to The Dude, but does it change my relationship with the Coens and their films?  Listen in to find out.

Yes, this is about the original.

No, none of us had seen it until now.

Yes, we know the sequel came out last week, and we've not seen that either, but with talk of part two being better then the original, I felt it was time to get a look in on this (silent) thriller.  Obviously we make quite a few comparisons to Bird Box (link to our Bird Box podcast from earlier in the year), but silence or sightless - which works best in a movie?

It's Oscar winner Sam Rockwell, on the moon, alone.  Obviously something happens, but what happens is a bit odd, and it becomes Sam Rockwell and Sam Rockwell on the moon....alone?

I'm a big Sci-fi fan, but kinda like Ad Astra, this didn't appeal to me when it came out, and I talk about why in the episode, then talk about Sam Rockwell a lot.

We are nearing the end of the season,  and as some questions are answered, others are asked.  It's a vicious circle so it is!.

Wont say much here,  but we do finally get some information on Sylvia and her background, and after Nieve hit us with some BIG theories last week, she drops more theory bombs this week that make quite a bit of sense (but could ultimately be wrong).  Actually a lot of this episode is us theorizing about what could and may happen, but probably wont.

Listen in if you've watched it, or don't care and still want to know what's happening.

Finally, the film that IS saving Cinema is here.  No, its not Tenet, its a movie so OTT it'll melt your brain and leave you speechless, and it's working too, because the wife, the kids, my mum and I, all went to the cinema to see Fast 9.  We have waited a year for this, and we scoured the Edinburgh scenes to to see  if I was in any of them - FYI I'm not (shout out to the Scottish Extras who walked around Edinburgh for 2 weeks working on F9).

In the episode we discuss the all the weird things that happen including the return of Han, how no one knew about Jacob, the other villain of the movie, magnets, Nieve throws out some death theories, Isla schools me on physics (instead of biology), and a host of other plot holes so big you could walk through them.

Do we care about them?  NO.
Why? Because its a god damn Fast and Furious movie.
But how does it stack up against the other 8?  Listen in to find out!!.

When the Bourne Identity came out, everyone freaked out because the hand to hand combat was so good.  Fast Forward to 2011 and people are loosing their head over The Raid.  Fast forward a little more and John  Wick is now the gold standard in action movies - though I have to say I really enjoyed Nobody (handy episode link).  When it comes to sword fighting though, it went from Star Wars to Highlander to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and has slowly improved, but its not taken a jump forward.  Until now.

Rurouni Kenshi is a leap...its a LAUNCH forward in sword fighting terms.  Its as close to real life anime sword fighting as we have right now.  Join me and geek out on the techniques used, the levels of fighting, the study of the choreography and how a character decision makes the movies fight so much better.

Thank you.

(Quote from Disney+) Ep3 - Lamentis : "Loki finds out the Variants plan".  Insert Thor's "really though" meme here, because by general consensus this was not a good episode.

We discuss the fact that plans weren't revealed, Lady Loki/Sylivia's past isn't revealed in any meaningful way, and what's happened after last weeks (time) bombshell ending remains unresolved or even talked about.

Every cinema goer knows the Fast & Furious franchise.  You may love it, you may hate it, but in terms of longevity, few films can boast a life span of 20 years (FF1released 22/06/01), with the same characters covering as many films (10 as of next week).

The Fast series has always entertained us.  The kids love it.  Yes there are plot holes and issues with physics and what the human body can ACTUALLY do, and there are issues with how the female characters are developed, but for big, fun stupid movies, there really is nothing like them.  They go big so you don't go home - its been like that since five.

In this episode I chose ten categories and we discuss things like best car, best villain, best supporting character, Nieve adds best nude male scene, best bromance and as usual we go off topic and talk about using rats for torture.

What scenes put a MASSIVE smile on our face.  What brought us to tears.  What made us go WOW, and what made us go NO WAY IS THAT POSSIBLE.

Listen in and enjoy!!

Let it never be said that having children is not rewarding in some way.

In this week's episode Loki describes time using a salad, here at KWAWWT, Nieve uses electric power cables and fish.

With that in mind we talk multiple time lines, variants of variant Loki, the afore mentioned fish, multi-verses and multiple versions of times lines and the multi-verses within those...you know what - I tried to keep it short so we wouldn't confuse ourselves.

We also discuss our own theories because we're not falling for the internet ones this time (looking at you Mephisto/Wandavision).

When I needed someone to discuss Highlander with me, I knew there could be only one - enter stage left Ben from the Film Floggers.  It was great fun, and he was incredibly patient with me and saved me with his audio recordings, so a lot of love to him.  The back and fourth of promoting the episode has been a blast too!!.

Highlander though!!.  We cover the music, the plot, the plot holes, the utterly bizarre casting, the sword fighting, the backflips, and we interweave our thoughts on the recently announced reboot, due to star Henry Cavil.

We try to understand why its such a well loved movie and touch on the sequels, TV shows and cartoon show that are seen by many as a detriment to the original.  Should there have been only one film!!  Listen in to find out.

After Avengers Infinity War everyone started picking holes in the way the Avengers went about their 'Time Heist'.  If you turn your brain off and don't think about it too much (or the fact that Antman mentions a film staring the actor playing Antman) and enjoy it for what it is - ITS FINE!!

However the "if Loki escaped at the end of the invasion of New York, who did Thor take back to Asgard", is a pretty good question, and we're not about to find out.....or are we?  Are we going to end up more confused then when we started.

Is Loki the new Tenet, meaning content creators will start post "Loki ending explained" and we'll all need to watch it to find out Mobius is actually Barry Allan from DC?.  Or is it the new Memento - a film so clever that forwards and backwards it makes complete sense, but its REALLY complicated until the start and end are revealed?

We have a rule when we watch films.  If, after 20 minutes, your not enjoying it, you can leave (unless you picked it).  It's there so the kids don't have to watch ALL the old crap I put on.  This week that rule was invoked by Nieve while watching, of all things, Highlander!!!.  Oh, and Isla fell asleep.

Not a great start to a Highlander podcast, so a quick phone call later to save the show, and we're onto our cinema experience with Cruella.

This is the big Disney fashion extravaganza released  day and date in cinemas and on Disney+, but where would the kids rather have seen it?.  It also has a bitchin soundtrack, awesome clothes, an amazing 70's setting ... but what did the kids actually think of Cruella after 2hrs and 20minutes.

I'll admit up front, I may have been a bit excited the day I recorded this one.  I was having a good day, doing my cleaning and chores and stuff, there was good music playing and I had been to the cinema for the first time in over a year, and IT WAS AWESOME!!

Perhaps being in the cinema is what made me look on this film more favourably then others have, and I do spend a bit of time talking about being back at the movies, but no spoilers here,  I discuss what makes three interesting, how they break away from being another haunted house / possessed person movie, and how the future looks.

Never really fancied these movies before, mainly because I thought they were low brow, cheap horror, but how wrong I was!!.  Hoovered up all 7 films in the Conjure-verse over a week, hence why there is no movies in my box 14th May, and it seems kind of apt that I release this today since Conjuring 3 comes out today in the UK (26/05/21).

I talk about (mostly) what I like, the stories, effects, acting, but a big chuck is about how well these movies fit together, and how, even though Marvel is the gold standard for an interconnected film universe, The Conjuring should get a lot of credit too for doing a low key version of the MCU - no mean feat considering Warner/DC can't seem to do it.

Hope you enjoy my rambles.  If you like supernatural spooks, I've linked our episode where Nieve and I discuss The Other - the pinnacle in ghost stories as far as I'm concerned.

When Love, Death & Robots released in 2019, it pushed the envelope in a lot of way - photoreal CGI animation, adult content, mind bending short stories.  It did a lot of things really well in its 18 episodes.

Jump forward to the 14th May 2021, and we get another 8 genre bending, amazing, short animations that continue to push boundaries, so I showed the kids an episode from Season 1, and episode from Season 2, then phoned them and asked them for their thoughts.

If your discussing stuff that breaks boundaries, you should try to break a few of your own, so apologies for the sound quality, but it's something I can work with and now I know what were, we'll improve and hopefully speak to more people.

Anti Life / Breach (2020) - Crap Bruce Willis Alien rip off.
Jiu Jitsu (2020) - Really crap Nicholas Cage Predator/Mortal Kombat hybrid rip off
The Art Of Self Defence (2019) - Jesse Eisenberg takes up Karate after being assaulted

He flies helicopters, he jumps out of planes, he climbs up tall buildings, he rides motorcycles really fast the wrong way around Paris and sometimes he flies on the OUTSIDE of planes.  It is, of course, Tom Cruise.

We discuss the movie that started the current story arc of the MI franchise, how real is it compared to Bond and the Fast & Furious series....then we go off topic and discuss Henry Cavil, the head of the IMF being a Dark Arts teacher and other spy movie tropes.

Enjoy.

One of the latest, and freshest animation movies, recorded on our latest and freshest piece of pod-recording technology!!  Apologies first - we we're playing around with set up and the sound buttons, so there's quite a lot of applause, some musical interludes, etc etc.

What can I say - kids and new tech toys (and maybe dad's and new tech toys too!!).

We loved recording it.  Hope you enjoy it.

Basically its grumpy old man - the movie, and according to Isla its not John Wick, however we discuss its similarities with John Wick, and what sets it apart.

We also discuss Bob Odenkirk's name, what type of butter he, and Keanu, would be sculpted out of and I think the Rock gets mentioned along with shirt colours in the Fast & Furious series.  A regular episode for me and eldest TBH.

I know, it's not a Marvel a TV series, and we usually do films anyway, but hey, we can break out once in a while, especially for spoiler free reviews like this.

I basically spent the last 3 days watching this, hence the reason why our podcast is a day late, so that means its good.....or that I'm persistent!!.

Listen in to find out if S&B is like every other "person finds out they're the saviour of the world, but doesn't know what to do or want the power they now have" TV fantasy adaption show , or is it more then a "person finds out they're the saviour of the world, but doesn't know what to do or want the power they now have" TV fantasy adaption show.

No pun intended, but WOW, this film has appreciated in value so much.  It feel's more relevant now then when it was when it was released.  Even though its 16 years old it's not dated, it feels fresh, it looks good, has great acting......I honestly never thought it was that good, but then maybe it needed the recent political landscape, and the pandemic, to really strike a chord with me.

But what did the kids think of this 1984-esq tale of a totalitarian British government?.  Nieve has a great take on this which, both really surprised me and was not what I saw this film as, but that's the great thing about watching movies with kids!.

I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as we enjoyed the movie.

Thanks for listening.

As part of her 2021 Alphabet Challenge, Isla picked The Empire Strikes Back, and to be honest, the original trilogy needs an extended episode to itself.  The second and third trilogy need episodes...the whole series needs an extra special episode.  It's a lot of Star Wars and a lot of episodes, but we focus on just Empire for this episode.

I also don't think we do it justice, because there is so much to talk about, but to have a talk about my favourite of the Star Wars films is just good fun, and we digress into the new trilogies, some Clone Wars, and talk about the time we met Julian Glover, so a mixed episode, but its just great to watch Star Wars with your kids some times.

Enjoy, and may the force be with you!!.

It feels like ages since I did a solo podcast, but they couldn't watch this and I really wanted to, so here we go.  With the likes of Denzel, Rami and Leto this detective serial killer thriller should be a slam dunk - that's 4 Oscars right there!!

There are obvious comparisons to Seven, there's the story arcs for the characters, there are the bits that fail and there's the music, but is it a nice Chianti with fava beans, or is it Lambrini that's been sitting in the sun too long.

The penultimate episode, which clocked in at over 50 minutes, so plenty to talk about.  We, however, focused mostly on America's Ass.  Oh, and the Muppets as the Fantastic Four...but mostly ass.

More character driven story this week,  obviously leading into the finale, but Sam goes home, he and Bucky have a chat, there's the John Walker fall out, Sharon Carter makes a brief but important appearance, as does Zemo.

Watch F&WS first, because this is spoiler HEAVY!!

Some love it, some loathe it.  Action packed, over styled, homoerotic, testosterone driven, special effects laden and poorly acted are some of the great things people have said about this film.

But what if two daughters watched the same film, at around the same age, and had two completely different views on it.  A couple of years back I watched this with Isla.  Two days ago I watched this with Nieve.

Who liked it?  Who didn't?  Listen in and enjoy.

For many of us, including James Halliday, the 80's was the pinnacle of human culture.  When you talk about "80's movies" films like Indiana Jones, Aliens and Predator are talked with reverence along side some of the larger then life actors of that time, and none are (literally and figuratively) larger then ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER.

In this episode I bribe the kids to join me in watching the UTTERLY bonkers, early 80's action flick Commando.  Along the way we discuss the missing Mum, feeding random forest animals, the guns with infinite bullets and other 80's action films.  The kids give their verdict on golden age of action, and may upset a few of you in the process.

WHAT. A. SHOW.

This week the kids were shouting at the TV, shouting at Cap, laughing at Bucky, and cheering on.......ANOTHER group.  For Marvel I feel this is their best real world character story, and this episode has SPADES of character development.

I'm highly impressed, but we ruin all that by being super excited, shouting over each other and recording our show right after we finish watching it.

Spoilers aside, this was Nieve's choice of movie, but how did having one (amazing) actress, play SEVEN characters, work out?.  Any shoddy CGI?  Perhaps some dodgy lighting or camera focuses?  Could you tell Monday from Wednesday and Saturday?  And what did happen to Monday?

We're back with another Stathe movie, this time 2012's Safe.  It has Triads/Yakuza, Russian Mafia, Corrupt Cops, and The Stathe saving a little girl (awww) - everything a good Stathe film needs.  It's almost like action movie Bingo with all these villain tropes.

But does it deliver?  Is it, as Isla hopes, better then her 'Holiday Challenge' movie Hummingbird, which we all agreed was quite terrible by Stathe standards (link below).

This film is a monster at just over four hours long, but we did it in one go, and it was worth it.

Due to the magnitude of this film we're approaching it slightly differently.  First a wee history lesson on how we ended up getting to the Snyder Cut, then we decided to discuss each character - the changes to their looks, story, additional scenes and interaction within the film.

Some characters get more changes then others, so more time is spent on them, but we do not talk about the story, the epilogue, or any repercussions for the DC universe or the Snyder-verse.  We will be doing a special episode for that over at our Buy me a Coffee page.

This is our longest episode to day, so strap in and we hope you enjoy our take on what should have been the original Justice League.

If you had asked me, coming out of the cinema in 2004, what I thought of M Night Shyamalan's The Village, I would have told you it sucked.  The film I got was not the film I thought I was going to see, and yes, I was sucked in by the hype at the time.

However Nieve wanted to watch this, it's just turned up on Disney+ Star, and as my friend says "you should re-watch movies at different parts of your life so you can see how your experiences have changed them".  I made her watch the trailer and then we watched the movie - in my case, the first time since it came out 16 years.

For this episode I thought it would be fun to compare a film from my teenage years, with one from the kids.  OK, I was 17 when Jurassic Park came out, and Isla was 10 when World was released, but which is better.

The special effects in Park (1993) were ground breaking.  Not since Terminator 2 (1991) had there been such a buzz about visual effects.  But 22 years later do they still hold up?.  As a film is it does it still have action, adventure and tension?  Have Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum been replaced by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.

The zombie genre has always been fertile ground for both comedy and  horror movies, but somehow this managed to be the best of both.  It treads a fine line between being slightly too funny to be serious, then being just serious enough to not be comedic.

Have you ever completely forgotten about a film, then find it and get really excited for watching it again?  That was us with Death Race.

In our house, we are MASSIVE Jason Statham fans.  We've probably watched all his stuff, including the dodgy music video he did for The Shamen (Comin on - go look it up), and he has a lot of stuff to watch - Lock, stock & 2 smoking barrels, Crank, Transporter, Fast 7 and Gnomeo & Juliet.

This is something special though.  In the same year Batman flipped a truck, so did THE STATHE.  Guns on cars.....BIG guns too, none of this sneaky wee James Bond stuff!!!.  OTT racing and destruction that was years ahead for the Fast series (they wouldn't steal a safe and destroy Rio for another 3 years).  Joan Allen as a prison warden psycho villain, and a kill count well over 30.

It's kind of apt that with Godzilla vs Kong coming in March, Isla would pick an action movie with more big, dumb animals.

Rampage, for me, will always be the arcade/C64 video game from the 80's.  A simple idea about 3 giant monsters - a gorilla, a werewolf and a lizard (none of which infringed any copyright by looking like any other giant creatures), but for my kids it will now forever be a CGI spectacle of destruction and battles to the death.

In 1995 neither Christopher McQuarrie or Bryan Singer were big names, but The Usual Suspects changed that over night.  One would set up the X-men universe and give us the Queen biopic that had been sitting in development hell for years.   The other would write some of the best action scripts around (and coming soon), then steer the monster that is the latter Mission Impossible films.

But its the ending that keeps people returning to this classic (despite/because of Kevin Spacey's fall from grace).  This film gave us one of cinema's most amazing plot twists, because everyone in 1995 was asking either "what's in the box?" or "Who is Keyser Soze?".

So what happens when you get two teenagers - one who won't admit she's wrong, and one who hates character movies - and show them an amazing character study that proves you were wrong  right up to the last 3 minutes!!!

Finally, the chance to share some 80's love for the legend that is John Hughes with my kids.  The music.  The style.  The emotions of friendship, preparing for college, giving your eyes to Stevie Wonder, an uncertain future, and the question of how to get the mileage down on a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California are all in here.

As awesome as this film is to me (Dad), and its place in time and my memories, does it still affect the 'youth' of today.  With the like of Riverdale, 13 Reasons Why and Sex Education all dealing with the emotions of school today, can Hughes still connect with teenagers?.  It's still an amazingly well made film, with great direction, camera work and acting - no doubt about that, but you'll need to listen in to find our what the kids made of it.

BRUCE WILLIS SAVES THE WORLD!!!  It's an awesome idea for any movie.  Having survived the Nakatomi Plaza incident in 1988, Big Bruce flies into space to save the human race....and we cried and cried and cried.

I don't remember it being such a tear jerker, but is it still an AMAZING collaboration of OTT destruction, SFX and one-liners between Bay & Bruckheimer.  Can it still cut the Mustard with the Marvel for all out destruction?

As far as I'm concerned, the fact that this is directed by the same guy that did The Muppets (2011), Muppets Most Wanted and Flight of the Conchords, means it's essential viewing for all, even though I didn't know he directed it before I looked it up for my podcast notes.

Here it is.  Our Christmas day viewing, and by FAR the....THE best Christmas movie ever made.  This film transcends our love of all things Muppet, and we discuss a lot of muppet stuff.

We even review the 'missing song' and discuss how it's inclusion would have affected the movie.  Danny Trejo, The Muppets, Treasure Island, a few sing a long bits and Animal stuffing his head down a toilet.

While scrolling through Youtube one day I saw a video called "Ghosts of War - the ending explained!!".  That piqued my interest, because I knew about the film, but after the October horror binge I went on, I really didn't fancy another 'scary movie'.

This, however, is an un-ashamedly B-movie, World War Two,  haunted house film, with a particularly smart twist at the end, so it was in for a viewing.  Soldiers go in, jump scares abound, but its the 'why' that's really good.

I LOVE this film.  This it the pinnacle in psychological horror.  There's only one death, but there's so much tension and fear and its just utterly brilliant.

Today the Girls and I sat down to watch it, and I was not disappointed.  I love editing and re-listening to their reactions as much as I enjoyed re-watching the film itself.

While it's truly a classic, my worry is that younger audiences will never see this film unless they have a reason to seek it out.  In an age of indistinguishable special effects, mega budgets and blockbuster superhero action movies, classic films are less 'thrilling', less interesting, and just plain old.....but they are far better then people realise.

This film now has a special place in my heart....for a completely different reason.

Spike Lee's movie about 5 black Vietnam vets, returning to Vietnam to find the body of their Platoon leader, is not without flaws, but its a good movie.

Certainly its time that there was a film about Black soldiers in Vietnam, but this addresses not just the effect of the war on these characters, but interestingly, how it affected the Vietnamese as well.

Was really excited to watch this with the family, as were they. John Wick is many things - focused, precise, action packed, lacking in plot, TEAR JERKER!!!!???

Find out how John Wick features in Disney's Inside Out, how Nieve is possibly enrolled in some form of Ninja training, why Keanu isn't and action star, what a 'Dinner Reservation' actually is and why we cried at this and other movies.  Watch out for Babayaga though!!!

We're heading to Perfection, Nevada, with a population of 14 and 4 Graboids for this episode.  It still cuts the mustard people, after THIRTY years, but what about other B movies...and Bee movies.  What about monster movies like Lake Placid and Godzilla?  And can we shamelessly plug another podcast for money?

Be warned, this episodes features no muppets.....but killer puppets!!

Having watched Predator, eldest daughter was interested in Predator 2.....but is it as good as the original?

We discuss quotable line content, where's Dutch, how to really stab a man with a spear, and (yet again) the Muppets (vs predator vs alien vs Jurassic park).  Totes worth a listen.

As always we end up comparing this film to a Muppet film, but what is Pirates (1/2/3/4/5) like, is Jack Sparrow an arse, what happened to Commander Norrington, who cares about Elizabeth's Dad dying and why was Johnny Depp paid (allegedly) $90million for his worst performance (prior to Fantastic Beasts 2).

Through out history similar things have been released at the same time by different people/companies, and films are no exception.  Here we compare and contrast White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen (and the others in the trilogy), as well as discussing which van is better (A-Team or Mystery Machine), would Barrack Obama play the Vice President to Ryan Renolds President in a future movie and what happens if Sesame Street took the Muppets hostage.

Prepare to go WAY off topic!!.

Jake and Elwood are on a mission from God....and there's some songs to be sung.  Me and Nieve discuss the cameo's, the music and the drugs that made The Blues Brothers possible.  Is it a musical? What was Oprah doing in there?  How many cars were destroyed?  Listen to find out!!

One of THE best action films EVAH!!  Me and my eldest discuss the amended rating (15 now, not an 18), arms being blown off, Arnie having muscles like beach balls with flaps of skin stretched over them, the (cutting edge) special effects and the similarities between it and Jaws.  Seriously....JAWS.  Trust me, its good stuff.

Besides...who doesn't like Predator?

Yes, you read that correctly...the Indiana Jones Trilogy.  Three of the best action adventure films ever made, full of memorable characters, scenes and dialogue.  Listen to our thoughts on the Temple of Doom banquet, the brilliance of the true grail and the face burning nightmares that followed!!!  Oh yeah...we slag off Mutt Williams too.

Our first podcast, and the first trilogy we watched at the beginning of lock down.  Being fair, we probably stray into Lord of the Rings territory....and I think Thanos turns up at the end for some reason (listen to find out).  Our minds wander in and out of Middle Earth.  No pipe weed was taken during the making of this podcast.  PROMISE
