The Van Maren Show: Recent Episodes

Jonathan Van Maren

Every week, The Van Maren Show will try to get a handle on what is really going on in our culture today. It can be difficult to find news sources and storytellers that accurately reflect a Christian, socially conservative, pro-life, pro-family worldview. Join me on Wednesdays as we head to the front lines of the culture war.

Liberals and conservatives alike have noticed an obvious “vibe shift” in America over the past several months, specifically since Donald Trump was elected to take back the White House. This shift must be welcomed and celebrated, but there’s still a lot of work ahead of us to defeat woke ideology and reestablish a Christian culture.

On this week’s episode of The Van Maren Show, Jonathon discusses some of the cultural effects of Trump’s second term in office, specifically an increasing interest in the Christian faith. While this sudden interest in Christianity is encouraging, Jonathon explains that it is mainly due to an increasing desire to find deeper spiritual meaning. Many are still not willing to submit to the fullness of the faith with its moral obligations.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance gave a speech for the ages in Munich earlier this month, directly chastising European leaders over their totalitarian censorship of conservatives and Christians. Unsurprisingly, many European politicians angrily denounced Vance and the Trump administration in response — indicating just how successful of a speech it was.

On this week’s episode of The Van Maren Show, Jonathan analyzes Vance’s “bombshell speech” and its ultimate significance for the future of American and European relations, the pro-life movement, freedom of speech, and more.

On this week’s episode of The Van Maren Show, Jonathon speaks with Alithea Williams, public policy manager of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC), about the latest on the United Kingdom's assisted suicide bill.

Williams emphasized that the bill still needs to pass a third reading after being scrutinized by a parliamentary committee and then pass the House of Lords. But if it passes the third reading, it’s unlikely the House of Lords would vote against it.

Jonathon also asked Williams what pro-lifers, particularly those in the UK, can do to stop the bill from passing a third reading. Tune in to find out what she thinks.

Jonathan Darnel was one of the 21 pro-life activists unjustly prosecuted and imprisoned by the Biden administration for participating in a rescue at a late-term abortion facility. Last month, however, he and his fellow activists were pardoned by President Donald Trump, and now they are free once again.

On this week's episode of The Van Maren Show, Darnel tells Jonathon his story of the rescue that got him arrested, the trial, his experience in prison, Trump's pardon, and what he plans to do next in the fight to end abortion in the U.S.

The first two weeks of President Donald Trump’s second term have been a whirlwind of executive orders on a wide variety of issues, including some against gender ideology. What do these orders against gender ideology actually accomplish, and what do they leave aside?

On this week’s episode, Brandon Showalter of the Christian Post unpacks these executive orders and what they really mean in the fight against the transgender agenda. Above all, Showalter cautions us to remember that transgender activists won’t just give up because they’re losing a few battles in the culture war.

Secular political leaders seem more willing and able to tackle the issue of porn addiction than our priests and pastors. Why is that? And how should Christian communities tackle the issue? On this week's episode of The Van Maren Show, Jonathon speaks with Jacob Valk of Into the Light Ministries about how to "porn-proof" our homes, churches, and communities. Valk shares his unique insights on how we can actually keep our children, loved ones, and neighbors free from the scourge of porn addiction.

Assisted suicide could very well become legal in the United Kingdom despite strong opposition from ex-prime ministers, clergy, and healthcare leaders. This is just the latest example of how the culture of death is gaining strength across the West. On this week's episode of The Van Maren Show, Jonathon sits down with John Deighan of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children to discuss the possibility of legal assisted suicide in the UK, as well as the most effective strategies for pro-lifers to fight back against the culture of death.

On this week’s episode of The Van Maren Show, Jonathon discusses the challenges of reaching the average voter with a pro-life message ahead of the upcoming November elections. Jonathon analyzes why pro-lifers have not been successful in effectively spreading their message, comparing the American situation to what happened in Ireland in 2018. Pro-lifers face an uphill battle given the enormous resources of the abortion industry and the complete support it receives from the mainstream media. But by laying out the reality of the situation, Jonathon is hoping to spur the pro-life movement into adopting winning strategies that transform our culture into one which defends the sanctity of life.

Os Guinness joins Jonathon Van Maren on this week’s episode of The Van Maren Show. Guinness is an author and commentator who has written over 30 books that have had a profound impact on the American political conversation. And yes, he is the great, great, great grandson of Arthur Guinness, the famous Dublin Brewer.

Van Maren and Guinness begin their discussion with talking about the notion of freedom, specifically in America. Guinness outlines the three challenges that freedom has, stating that the American Founders knew full-well these challenges. The first is winning freedom (The Revolution in 1776). The second is ordering it or giving it political framework (The Constitution in 1787). Finally, the third is sustaining it… Which has been the challenge of centuries. Guinness says the best way to achieve sustainable freedom is through, what he calls, the Golden Triangle of Freedom. This states that Freedom requires Virtue, Virtue requires Faith, and Faith then requires Freedom.

Van Maren’s conversation with Os Guinness is an uplifting one while dealing with the current state of American politics, freedom, and culture. Guinness has wisdom from the decades of writing, research, and experience that needs to be shared far and wide. Be sure to listen to the episode and share with your friends and family.

Jonathon Van Maren speaks with Dr. Daniel K. Williams, author of two books published by the Oxford University Press. The first, “God’s Own Party: The Making of the Christian Right” and also, “Defenders of the Unborn: The Pro-Life Movement Before Roe v. Wade.” This week’s episode of The Van Maren Show and the second book are absolutely filled with information that everyone in the pro-life movement needs to know about.

There is a broad understanding that the pro-life movement was simply a reactionary movement to Roe v. Wade being legalized in the United States in 1973. In reality, this is not the case. History shows that some of the first pro-life laws were passed in the 1800’s in response to the discovery by doctors that life began long before “quickening,” which is when the mother could first feel the baby in the womb. These Protestant doctors stated that these human beings in the womb deserve protection under the law. It's also important to note that it wasn't until much later during the pro-life movement that abortion became associated with the right-wing beliefs.

The conversation moves into what exactly C-Fam does within the United Nations when policies are drafted. “You know, you get the document, you read the document. You identify bad language; you talk to delegations to try to get bad language out. You try to get good language in… And that’s pretty much what we do.”
