In the third episode of The ‘Business is Booming’ Project, we welcome Dr. Raymond Spencer. Spencer left his home city of Adelaide at 18 on a ship to the United States with $300 in his pocket and returned in 2009, having been the CEO and founder of Kanbay, a tech firm based in India, from its inception in 1989 through to its IPO on the NASDAQ in 2004, and eventually its acquisition by Capgemini for $1.7 billion in 2007. This episode explores the role spending twenty years in the not-for-profit sector has had on Spencer’s experience in the for-profit sector, the principles of starting and growing a business, creating purpose, dealing with mistakes, getting the most out of people, and the role venture capital plays in today’s business environment.
Episode 2 of The 'Business is Booming' Project investigates the principles of entrepreneurship through the lens of the CEO of Master Cask, Darren Lange. Lange has spent over 30 years in the wine industry and more than 15 years representing major cooperage brands. A born entrepreneur, he started Master Cask in 2010, and since its inception, Master Cask has prospered; growing into a leading oak barrel specialist barrel supplying the Australian wine, spirits and brewing industries. Being a global company, with imports from Bordeaux and Burgundy with cooperages in both South Australia and Tasmania, Master Cask has enjoyed the fruits of the finest French and American Oak. This episode delves into the principles of starting and growing a business, the foundations of entrepreneurship, and the sacrifices that come with it.
In the first episode of The 'Business is Booming' Project,we meet Callum Iles, current Business Innovation & Entrepreneurship Coordinator at Scotch College after involvement in the finance sector. Since transitioning from finance into education in 2013, Iles has transformed the Scotch College Business curriculum by starting a new course in Business & Entrepreneurship in Year 10 and mentoring award-winning young entrepreneurs in the Australian eChallenge in Schools and more recently the Unley Fish Tank Competition. This episode explores what makes a good business, the importance of management and delves deep into ethics and corporate social responsibility in a move towards a more purposeful economy.
