The Change up - Deconstructing Cultural Topics with a Biblical World View: Recent Episodes

The Field Church

For those who aim to be purpose driven in all areas of their life, but when it comes to their faith are secretly struggling. They have attempted to search the bible and come to find it irrelevant; a useless tool full of fictional stories. They very much want an authentic faith as a part of their life but can't seem to reconcile all of the fake leadership and fit it into their world view. They have experimented with many forms of self help and personal development but deep down they know their personal goals will still leave them feeling empty. They desperately long to have some confidence in a God that will finally give them peace of mind.

On this weekly show we will help the listener that is searching for answers realize that ultimately they are searching for something that only God can provide. Your hosts are Pastor and Biblical counselor Chad Wiles and Christian Entrepreneur Josh Miller. Together they will tackle popular cultural subjects by deconstructing them and viewing them though a Gospel Centered World View. Ultimately they will show that there is no divide between the secular and the sacred. If you are tired of spirituality without substance then tune in.

Today Pastor Chad grills Josh on a friend he has been sharing the gospel with. The friend has been going to church but never fully understood the gospel. We can all fall into a trap of believing that just because someone is in church they believe everything the church believes, including the gospel. We shouldn't abdicate a call to share the gospel with our neighbor by inviting them to church. Personal relationships are a very powerful way to share the gospel. We can't say if it is more powerful than a church service, but we know God certainly calls us to make disciples in our own worlds. Let's not be lulled into a false belief, or avoid hard and sometimes awkward conversations just because we watched someone we have been praying for and building a relationship with show up at church. If we truly love the people in our worlds that we are reaching, then shouldn't we rejoice in the responsibility of sharing the greatest news on earth with them? We know this is hard, and we know you may not always be enthusiastic about it, but we must all see that it is of utmost importance, and we must be grown into the disciple that loves sharing his/her faith with others!

View Details

Are you equipped to make disciples? Maybe the better question is this: Are you ready to take your faith serious? This question is not meant to offend you. It is meant to illuminate what is required to share your faith and make disciples. Which is this: have faith and be a disciple. The questions is also meant to show the urgency of sharing our faith and making disciples. It isn't an optional task reserved for the super-christian, but we are all called and equipped by the Holy Spirit to do the work of our Father's Kingdom.

Today Chad and Josh draw on Josh's experience as a SEAL jumping out of airplanes, and how that relates to evangelism. Chad discusses mindset and helps listeners be encouraged to take the leap of faith with people in their worlds that need to hear the gospel, or fellow christians who need to be challenged in their own faith.

We understand how challenging of a topic this can be, but if you are serious about loving God and living by the truth of His word then please listen, be encouraged, and take heart in the work the Lord has provided for you. Ephesians 2: 10 says, For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Prayer can be taught as a physical act of dependence on the Lord. Our prayer life usually amounts to the extent that we believe that God is the one in control. In other words, if we depend on him much, then we pray much. But if we live and operate in our life with an underlying belief that we are in control then our prayer life will usually reflect that too.

This all stems from the accepted principal that what we believe is what we do.

Multiplication can be one of the biggest catalyst towards a deeper prayer life. If we believe that only the Lord can save and draw others to himself then it will definitely positively effect our prayer life. This is good news because God can grow our faith where we are at through faithfully and obediently living out the truth of His Word.

He gives us Help. And He also gives us an opportunity to feel uncomfortable.

These opportunities are leaps of faith that will grow us in our dependence on Him. It is in this way that he levels the playing field. Any Christian is able to push into this act of “Taking up his cross to follow the savior” (Luke 9:23)

Pastor Chad and Josh discuss prayer at length as well as give an honest assessment of their own prayer life and provide helpful and simple ways to increase ones prayer life.

Today we look at the main reasons we christians do not share our faith.

As we look at the reality of Eternity we can see that there is, and should always be, a urgency on the lost souls of those in our worlds. But we certainly don't act like there are souls on fire all around us! If belief drives action, then what are our beliefs about our neighbors?

C.S Lewis (although I can't find the reference so it may be by someone else) said that if we heard of half another countries population being wiped out by an atomic bomb we would be sad and grieve and talk about how short life really is for a short time, but we would all most likely sleep soundly in our beds that night, however if a man stubs his toe he will toss and turn all night in that pain. We, as humans, have a very small capacity for empathy and compassion.

How can we develop and foster an Eternal Worldview?

Matthew 6:33 says But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Selfishness and Focusing on earthly things will keep us from having an Eternal and Biblical Worldview, and only God can give us a heart and compassion for the eternal souls of those around us. Mindset is redeemed through Gods word, through worship and through prayer.

The Ironman Creed: 1. We are driven by the Love of Christ for God's Glory (2 Corinthians 5:14-17) 2. We are comfortable in the uncomfortable. (Romans 1:16) 3. We are stronger together. (Proverbs 27:17) 4. We believe, therefore we do. (Romans 1:17)

Story from The Field* Today we offer practical advice on reaching others in our own worlds. We do this by looking at a relationship Josh is building and look at some of his motives and actions. Many times we overthink or over-spiritualize evangelism which leads us to being ineffective at reaching the people in our worlds.

View Details

Today we discuss a story from "the field" that revolves around Loving the Lord and having a relationship with him even though we can't see him. If possible, How can we increase our love for the Lord?

Chad also hits on the process of beginning a new discipleship and the power of good, simple questions. What we believe, affects what we do. So talking about what we do can shed more light on what we believe than we may say at first thought. This is why we say the gospel thrives in reality. But ultimately, we must get down to the most important belief of all, what do you think of Jesus Christ and how do you respond to his gospel message?

Lastly, we discuss the beauty of being completely unoriginal in our mission of spreading the gospel through building real-genuine relationships and leaning on the truth of God's Word.

View Details

We love to talk about cultural topic from the lens of a gospel worldview. But there are times when all the conversations, no matter how true, become a little noisy, like useless chatter. We think these topics are good, and relevant, but not as much as living out the christian life as Christ commanded. We find, that it is in this obedience and commitment to the Great Commission that we even need to bring up cultural topics. In other words, it's when we share our faith with the lost world that we actually need to be aware of cultural topics, and to have a refined gospel worldview. It becomes real. Not so we can argue, but so we can provide answers to a broken person we are genuinely trying to reach. We hope you find this new direction helpful, as we Instill vision and equip with the tools to live a life on mission in an attempt to reach those in your own worlds.

On this Bonus Episode we hear from Mike Linstead - PRESIDENT + CO-FOUNDER, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS of The Nehemiah Project in Mandeville, LA

"From 22 to 25 years old, my story is a typical alcoholic/addict story – in and out of rehab, in and out of jails, in and out of institutions, no friends, no family, I ended up homeless, living under a bridge in San Luis Obispo, California.

This was my condition physically and it basically reflected my spiritual condition. I was dying."

Mike shares his incredible story and also his heart and philosophy in regards to the road to recovery from addiction. He has teamed up with our Co-Host, Pastor Chad Wiles to make sure they are recovering the "full person". They address spiritual, physical, emotional, as well as logistical issues of getting participants back into society and being equipped to live healthy "normal" lives.

While they will admit that drugs and alcohol do have physically addictive characteristic, the reason people are drawn to those substances in the first place is something else entirely. Something deeper. They reject the hypothesis that addiction is an illness without a cure, and instead blame sin as the root cause of all life dominating issue and whole heartedly believe in the Gospel as the power of God to break individuals free from their sin. BUT it doesn't end there and that's where The Nehemiah Project comes in.

The recovery center is named The Nehemiah project after the Old Testament Prophet and inspired by his methods of rebuilding the wall in Jerusalem after the Babylonian Exile. They are in the fundraising stage now. Please go check them out and www.nehemiahprojectgno.org or on facebook at @thenehemiahprojectgno

We all fall into at least two categories. We are all either under some form of leadership, or leading others. The world certainly has some good things to say about leadership, but so does the Bible. Biblical leadership is counterintuitive. Humility for example, is a trait that we often over look. We may think we want a loud, smart, driving, take charge kinda-guy out in front, but in todays culture that doesn't always work best. The Bible shows us that it is actually very seldom the man God chooses to put in charge.

In todays age, team members need to be heard, they need to feel like they are having an impact and they are valued. Leaders are not just the man with the plan but rather the man, or woman, who loves, serves, and values others the best. Just look at how Jesus led.

Leaders are vulnerable and brave. They don't shy away from worse case scenarios but have the courage to face them.

Leaders have integrity. They live above reproach. They don't expect more from team members than they themselves would be willing to give.

Leaders are humble. This comes from a place of being strong and secure in their own identity. They are willing to put the right people in place without feeling the need to hold dominion over talented individuals.

Leaders have vision and clarity. They typically have the most vision and are able to see down the road to help steer the organizational ship. They also have the most passion and can motivate others authentically.

Overall, leadership is using others to help accomplish a mission that you wouldn't be able to accomplish on your own. We all need to ask ourselves if we are leading in the way that we would want to be led. And on the flip side, if we are serving or employed in an organization, are we working with the diligence we would like to see in someone in our own organization.

God Bless friends. This season is over and we can't wait to catch you on the next one. Stay tuned for future updates!

Lets be honest, the birds and the bees talk that we don't want to have with our kids, really comes from a place of not wanting to have it with ourselves, our spouses, or our closest friends. Today, for 49 minutes, that changes.

We internalize our desires. We make up stories about our spouse. We make up stories about ourselves. And we walk around in our marriage with walls the size of mountains. These walls protect us from the pain found from being vulnerable, but they also prevent us from treating sex the way it was intended to be. This Episode will explore what Sex is truly intended to be.

Pastor Chad and Josh get Real and Vulnerable today as they both discuss their own sex lives with their wives in an attempt to uncover some of the most common pitfalls in marriage regarding sex. They also uncover some of the perversions in our culture around intimacy, sex, and pornography. It will expose the negative effects it has on us in the bedroom and in our worship with God.

This is not a forbidden topic! Hopefully this conversation will stir up some questions in your own heart. Explore those questions, and we encourage you to open this topic up to your spouse and trusted friends. Like anything else, it is important to verbalize your thoughts and feelings to make sure they are lining up with your spouses expectations and more importantly, with Gods.

Lastly, This episode speaks primarily from a mans view, but we would still encourage women to listen as it will provide key insight into the mind of a man. Another episode from a women's perspective is coming soon!

We hope you find truth here today, and if you do please let us know by emailing chad@thefieldnola.com or joshmiller@thefieldnola.com.

Also, if you found this helpful, please share it with a friend, or someone in your life who would benefit from being renewed by a gospel worldview.

"Life is war. That's not all it is. But it is always that. Our weakness in prayer is owing largely to our neglect of this truth. Prayer is primarily a wartime walkie-talkie for the mission of the church as it advances against the powers of darkness and unbelief." -John Piper

Life is war, and conflict can be one of the greatest tools of the enemy. In Matthew 18:15 Jesus explicitly lays out how we should deal with conflict amongst brothers and sisters in Christ. The bible is not always so clear so It stands to reason that God really wanted us to understand this truth. Nothing can ruin the work of the church and communities within our Church as much as gossip and poorly handled conflict. We are to draw near to each other, share one anothers burdens, love one another, care for, forgive, submit, commit, build trust with, be devoted too, and the list goes on.

Fighting with one another is not one of the commands of scripture but it is human nature and the bible is so helpful in teaching us how to deal with it. As a Christian, next to prayer, dealing with conflict biblically may be one of the most important disciplines of the Christian faith. It is certainly the most important thing in building vulnerable and strong gospel centered communities within our churches.

This week Pastor Chad lays out biblical strategies for dealing with conflict. Josh helps by allowing him to use multiple examples from his own life and marriage. Honest, Open and very relevant to any Christian who deals with people on any level in their daily life. This episode will both strengthen your faith and help you foster stronger community wherever you live your christian life.

Our culture would not be what it is today without the heavy influence of media and entertainment. From Hollywood and the billions spent on the movie industry to Spotify to Netflix and binge-worthy TV shows, Americans spend so much time in front of a screen being entertained.

So much of what we watch is good, artful, inspiring, entertaining. It provides a world for the viewer to escape, to imagine, to dream and enjoy the world through a different perspective. It can awaken longings and desires inside of us that seem primal - hard wired into our DNA. Because of their ability to resonate so deeply, it can seem, at times, that the movies and stories we love are actually memories lost.

But as Christians how should we navigate this secular and sinfully driven industry? "....be in the world, but not of it...." ".....all things permissible but not beneficial...." The bible gives us direction, but we tend to get it wrong. We've tried legalism - disallowing all secular media, but that doesn't work. Why?

This week Pastor Chad will teach us how to view these things rightly, and how to think through deciding if something is worth watching.

Honest, vulnerable conversation that attempts to not condemn, but remind Christians of their purpose. The chief end of man is to worship and glorify God, and ultimately everything we watch or listen to should grow our affections towards that purpose.

We generally care about ourselves more than anything or anyone else. Right or wrong its most definitely human nature. This typically leads us to put a lot of focus on personality tests which essentially attempt to explain how we integrate with the world. Whether in a business setting, personal setting, relational setting. These tests explain who we are in any given environment. It can explain your tendencies as a Christian and how you best connect with God, potential marriage pitfalls, what kind of leader you are etc etc. .. It’s a phenomenon in our culture to obsess over what number, or letter or color we are in certain tests. DISC, Enneagram, Meyers-Briggs (16 personalities) Color Code, Spiritual temperaments and the list goes on. If we are honest, we would admit that it gives us hope. Deep down we hope it will explain the truths we are running and hiding from, that we're not actually good enough for the task before us.

Here is the truth, we are all called to all the commands and all the principals of scripture, and our personality is not an excuse to avoid them. It can, however, offer a plan of attack when we identify certain commands that may be hard for us because of how we are wired.

We must remember that when we accomplish things for the Lord despite our weakness is when God gets the most glory. And this is our greatest blessing...Seeing God work and seeing his Glory in us and others!

We hope this show is helpful as Pastor Chad and Josh discuss some common pitfalls with the mindset regarding personality tests. The guys also discuss how, as a biblical counselor Chad would help coach someone in interpreting their results from a biblical worldview.

Have you ever broken the law... Probably so. We all do, and we usually justify it by saying we know better than the law. You may not say that specifically, but you believe it deep down. What makes us think we know better then institutions that have been set up for hundreds of years in our culture?

And what about that nasty word Discipline? Isn't it terrible? How dare anyone treat us that way! We seek to alleviate the shame of discipline through the disapproval and discrediting of leaders and authority in our lives. This eases the sting a bit right?

On one hand, history shows us that its good to question authority; Civil rights, Nazi Germany, Pedophiles in the Catholic church are all great examples of times we need to question authority to protect the marginalized from evil. However, this has led us, as a culture, to always question the institution over the individual. We assume the feelings of the individual are more legitimate than the standards of the instituion. Big banks, Boss Man, Capitalism, The "Man", The Church (local) - We default in opposition to those with power and authority or at best always stand in question to them. This has become our default.

But we are human, so where are we getting it twisted? It isn't as simple as only following and trusting in merit based leadership because merit will always fail us, as will our judgment in that merit. There has to be a better formula on how to view authority through a Gospel Lens. How can we default into a position of support towards to our leaders rather than distrust. Most importantly, what does all this say about us and the way we know God?

God has given us a tool to view authority and our leaders. We are called, as Christians, to know the bible and question our leaders when what they are doing doesn't line up. But we are also called to trust God with our leaders too.

Tune in as Pastor Chad and Josh discuss all this and help renew our mindsets with the truth of the Bible.
