High Point City Manager Greg Demko has resigned after five years on the job.
The city council announced Demko’s departure following a closed session of a recent meeting.
He has worked for High Point since 2015. City officials have not publicly stated what led to Demko’s departure, saying it’s a personnel matter.
He was hired to replace longtime manager Strib Boynton following a three-month national search. An accountant who also holds an MBA degree, Demko came to the job with more than 30 years of experience.
He is credited with helping to revitalize downtown during his tenure, through efforts that included the addition of a minor league ballpark.
Deputy manager Randy McCaslin is serving as High Point’s interim city manager.

Randy Hemann

Many people have pushed for downtown revitalization in High Point in recent years.
But there hasn’t been much consensus on where in the downtown area the work should be focused and what kind of businesses would be a good fit.
Now the city has a new point-person for the job. Randy Hemann has been hired as an assistant city manager. Hemann has spent more than 25 years focusing on revitalization efforts in North Carolina cities, including Salisbury and Kinston.
High Point officials say Hemann worked on two downtown master plans in Salisbury, and during his time there investors put $70 million in a 24-square-block area of the downtown.
Most recently he's been the city manager of Oxford, in Granville County. He earned a political science degree from Marshall University and went on to get a Master of Public Administration degree from East Carolina University.
Hemann is scheduled to start in early September. He will serve under Greg Demko, who took over as High Point’s City Manager in January.

High Point’s new city manager had his first day on the job Monday. He is part of a new look for the city government.
The High Point City Council voted unanimously to hire Gregory Demko in November. Two weeks later, a revamped council was sworn in, as was a new mayor, Bill Bencini.
Demko is the first new city manager in 17 years. He spent most of his first day in meetings and could not be reached for comment.
He replaces Strib Boynton, who retired in July after serving as manager since January 1998.
Demko has more than 35 years of experience in local government. Prior to taking the city manager position, he was an assistant city manager and director of finance for Monroe, a small city southeast of Charlotte.
Demko is a certified public accountant and also has an MBA. He was selected after a three-month national search. The city used a consultant, Durham-based Developmental Associates, to lead the search.
