As we sit here today, we know Doctor Who is going to tender at some stage – probably later this year. We also know BBC Studios will be throwing its hat into the ring when it does.
Basically, ‘stuff’ is happening and, eventually, a new Doctor is going to be cast.
So in the spirit of our specials 14 for 14 (August 8, 2021) and 21 Replacements For 12 (February 1, 2017), we’re here to kick around our picks for the 16th Doctor.
We hope you like it.
Who would YOU cast as the 16th Doctor? Why not get in touch and let us know?

Hi everyone – Dave here!
Many of us know a LOT about how TV was made during the classic era of Who, but I realised I don’t know much AT ALL about how modern Who (and TV generally) is made!
So, I invited friend of the podcast – and an Emmy winning producer – Dylan Rees on the show to discuss these matters! It’s a little more in depth than our usual style, but I hope you’ll find this one-off chat interesting!

The Doctor Who partnership between Disney and the BBC has officially ended, with Disney stepping away from the co-production deal after two seasons. Although Disney will still air the upcoming spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea, the BBC has affirmed that Doctor Who will continue “with or without Disney,” and has confirmed a Christmas special penned by Russell T Davies for 25 December 2026.
Rob has thoughts.

Over the past five years, friend of the podcast Dylan Rees has worked at compiling the complete story of Reeltime Pictures, from the earliest days of its acclaimed Myth Makers interview tapes, through to the production of ambitious dramas and documentaries.
The resulting book tells the story of Keith Barnfather’s passion and dedication to develop a valuable archive of material – starting in the days of VHS through to DVD, Blu-ray, streaming and downloads – which chronicles the complete production history of classic Doctor Who.
In tonight’s episode Dylan sits down with Rob to discuss the book; what inspired it, what it was like to write, and even where a complete newbie to Reeltime could start with the archive.
The book will be launched at the Whooverville 16 Convention on 30 August 2025 in Derby, UK.
Dave took a quick visit up to Sydney recently, and the 16th of November saw him catch up with Rob, in-person.
For this latest meeting, our fun, lo-fi, hotel room recording vibe is back. Strap in for, ‘Rob and Dave Unplugged 4’ where, this time around, the guys canvassed their social media followers for questions about anything and everything!
Come and spend some time with the guys, talking everything from favourite movies to why Rob doesn’t go to live Doctor Who events.

Over the years, whenever Dave has seen a notable Doctor Who alum at an event, we’ve endeavoured to switch on the microphones and grab his thoughts in a special, standalone episode of the show.
A year ago this was Sophie Aldred in the original ‘Dave’s Big Day Out’ episode, but prior to that, episodes like, ‘When Dave Met Chris’ have also entertained listeners who couldn’t attend the events.
Today, we talk to Dave immediately upon his return home from Supanova where he saw, and interacted with, Jodie Whittaker. And also caught the panel for Jango/Boba Fett himself, Temuera Morrison.

With a new non-fiction Doctor Who book on the horizon, this time looking at the creation of Doctor Who back in 1963, Rob sits down for the third time in the life of the podcast with friend of the show and the book’s author, Paul Hayes.
Pull To Open: 1962–1963: The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who is available from Ten Acre Films on July 24, 2023.

‘Fresh and compelling… As definitive an account of those early years as I have read’ Toby Hadoke
When Doctor Who began on Saturday November 23 1963, few could have guessed that it marked the start of perhaps the most extraordinary story in the history of BBC television drama. But there had already been another story, equally extraordinary yet unseen, leading up to the transmission of that opening episode – the creation of the series itself.
Pull to Open explores the behind-the-scenes saga of Doctor Who in 1963, when a chain of events at the BBC brought together a disparate group to launch what would become one of British TV’s best-loved and most successful programmes. It’s the story of why these events happened; the BBC creative culture into which Doctor Who was born; how television drama was made in the early 1960s; and an insight into the people who started this epic journey.
Drawing from the BBC’s written archives and new interviews with some of those who were there, including Doctor Who’s first director Waris Hussein and original co-star Carole Ann Ford, Pull to Open is a detailed and comprehensive account of the programme’s path to the screen. Immerse yourself in the world of BBC Television in 1963 and discover how a series which was almost cancelled before a single episode was shown survived to cement its place in the popular culture of a nation.
Foreword by Toby Hadoke
On May 13, 2023, our Dave travelled up to Sydney to attend the Sophie Aldred fan event, run by our fellow Antipodean podcasters, The Sirens of Audio.
In addition to being there to support the return of small, fan-run events in this country, Dave was also tasked by the hosts to conduct an on-stage interview with Doctor Who author, Jon Blum. This was originally to be a joint interview with Jon and his wife, the celebrated Doctor Who author, Kate Orman, however Kate was unable to attend on the day.
This podcast is a half-hour discussion between Rob and Dave about the day in general, followed by about half an hour of audio from the Jon Blum chat. As we mention on the podcast, the audio of the Blum interview isn’t up to our usual podcast standards, but we’re sure you’d rather hear a version of the chat than nothing at all, so we include it here.
Enjoy!

In this episode, Rob and Dave are joined by Richard to talk about the ninth film in the Star Wars saga and the alleged end of the Skywalker saga, The Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (also known as Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker) is a 2019 American epic space-opera film produced, co-written, and directed by J. J. Abrams. It is the third installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, following The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi (2017), and the final episode of the nine-part “Skywalker saga”.
It was produced by Lucasfilm and Abrams’s production company Bad Robot Productions, and was distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film’s ensemble cast includes Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong’o, Keri Russell, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, Ian McDiarmid, and Billy Dee Williams.
After the new trilogy was announced following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, it was originally reported that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would write the script for Episode IX. In August 2015, Colin Trevorrow was hired to direct the film while constant-collaborator Derek Connolly would co-write a new script (both would eventually receive story credit with Abrams and Chris Terrio). In September 2017, Trevorrow left the project following creative differences with producer Kathleen Kennedy, and a few days later, it was announced that Abrams had been hired to return. Principal photography began in August 2018 at Pinewood Studios in England, and wrapped in February 2019; post-production was completed on November 24, 2019.
The Rise of Skywalker had its world premiere in Los Angeles on December 16, 2019, and was theatrically released in the United States on December 20, 2019. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising its celebration of the entire saga and others considering it unimaginative and not bold enough.
Terrance Dicks was born 14th April 1935 and passed away 29th August 2019, aged 84, leaving a figurative hole in the heart of Doctor Who fans of a certain age around the globe.
We at the Doctor Who Show were both massive fans of ‘Uncle Terrance’, to the degree that we joyfully dedicated a whole episode of the podcast to him back in January, 2019.
Tonight, we take that audio and add some new comments recorded today, so we can – in some small way – pay a final tribute to the great man.
We also hope if there are listeners of ours out there who are wanting to remember Terrance in the days ahead, then perhaps this audio file will be an uplifting and maybe even fun way to look back on his awesome career and fantastic body of work.
Vale, Terrance.
