Dennis Hopson is not just any basketball player. We're celebrating our 200th episode... 19 episodes late. A pandemic does get in the way of things, one of them being our 200th episode which aired early spring, but we're catching up and marking the milestone by revisiting our 100th episode special from 2017.
Norman and Ora Bell have been a household name within the Toledo community for more than half a century. Known for working in local county government, volunteering with various charities and foundations, and, of course, their eldest son, Mike Bell, who was Mayor of Toledo from 2010 until 2014. But the Bells are not actually from Toledo, they grew up in the segregated south of Louisiana. And that's where our story starts on this episode of The Rough Draft Diaries.
Unveiled in 2004, the African American Legacy Project (AALP) of Northwest Ohio, has been documenting and preserving the history of Northwest Ohio's African American community and its impact and influence far beyond Ohio's borders. In early 2017, The Rough Draft Diaries profiled the project's mission alongside it's founder Robert Smith. So for today's episode of The Rough Draft Diaries Revisit, we're going to revisit Robert and the AALP as we chat about running a small non-profit with today's challenges.

For The Rough Draft Diaries' Holiday Special, Haley covers a tradition that has recently returned to the Toledo area. When the grocery and department store, Tiedtkes closed in the 1970s it took the holiday cheese event with it. Now, with the help from Toledo's local paper, The Blade and grocery store, The Andersons, the tradition returns to Toledoans young and old.
The Rough Draft Diaries visits the Historic Vistula district of Toledo to check out The Casey-Pomeroy House. The house was built in 1870 in Toledo’s oldest neighborhood, it passed from owner to owner until it landed in the hands of Sue Burkett who made extensive renovations in order to turn the house into a Bed and Breakfast. Listen in as we learn about the house, it's former owners, and the Historic Vistula district in which it resides. Greg lives, what seems like, a fairly ordinary life. He's married with children, owns a dog and a few cats, and has lived in the same state he grew up. But the paintings he creates have a wild life all their own. They're painted with bright, neon colors and strange, angular shapes. In this episode, you'll hear exactly how Greg creates this kind of work.
Dani Herrera was inspired to create art after the death of her father and a diagnosis of OCD left her feeling confused and insecure. She found that the ripping, tearing, cutting and gluing involved in creating mixed media pieces of art helped to calm her anxieties and restore her creativity. But just as she started to get comfortable in her craft, a new medical issue presented itself - and Dani has to decide how to respond.
Dani Herrera is a local artist, well-known for creating pieces of mixed media. Traditionally, that means an artist combines different forms of art onto one canvas, i.e. paint; ink; textiles. Dani, however, works with human hair, dryer lint, pieces of clothing, pages from old books, newspaper - and that's just naming a few. Dani found this art-form in an usual way, one that is documented in this part of her story.
In 2013, Haley Taylor was a college grad in search of a job. As a young and aspiring public radio producer, she put her skills to work with a podcast that documented her job search in public media (which eventually got her a job at her hometown NPR station). In this episode of RDD, Haley recounts that experience and introduces us to her latest project: a new and revamped version of The Rough Draft Diaries.
