DSOs – Dental Support Organizations. Some love ‘em. Some hate ‘em. Some just don’t know what they think.

No matter what your thoughts, without DSOs in dentistry, where would all the dental grads go to get real world jobs?

Over 6,000 dental grads this year alone. 51% of them women.

Simple, rather obvious questions for you

Where are they supposed to work?

How are they supposed to open a practice with a half-million in debt?

From experience, I can tell you, most solo practices are NOT set up to absorb a single new dentist.

Why? Too many struggle to support the dentist that owns them now!

(If that’s you at the moment – you’re not alone and there is a way to solve your challenge – don’t despair. Reach out for help!)

In a recorded conversation with my friend Steve Parker, the owner of The Profitable Dentist, we discussed this and a few other topics in The State of Dentistry® 2019, at length.

Both Steve and I are pro solo practice/independent dentist.

But, I’m also not an anti-DSO kind of guy, either.

I believe there are market forces at work that are far stronger than anything you or I can sway.

So, you have a choice: Embrace the changes (Look, most of the changes in dentistry are incredibly positive!) or fight tooth and nail to maintain your status quo.

(I’m not a fan of lack of progress or “regressiveness” in most areas, but I AM cautionary of ALL progress – doesn’t mean it’s good, right?)

Catch my podcast with Steve, here.

You won’t want to miss it.

Talk soon,

Jerry

Kim and I had a ball recording the latest audio interview on the Business of Dentistry, what we call Dentistry Confidential®, here at Jerry Jones Direct.  In fact, for a full hour, we focused mostly on one specific area in your practice where you can CRUSH your overhead!

If you're frustrated with your overhead and would like to see it drop, there are three simple steps to take (no, I didn’t say it'd be EASY!):

Here are three of them:

1.   Lower expenses (a review of every expense you have is in order)

  1. Increase production and collections (this is by far the most effective and fastest to take hold and make an impact aside from slicing your payroll)

  2. Get hooked up with guys like Kim and myself who study and know business, listen, take notes and make changes.

It’s a hard truth: The IRS, traditional financial institutions, and financial advisors often prey on dentists, doctors, and professional practice owners.

If you could only hear the conversations behind closed doors, your blood would boil and you'd no doubt kick every one of them square in the arse, right outta your life...

In this episode, you will learn how Dr. Phelps was forced to leave a profitable dental practice at the height of his career to help his daughter fight a life-threatening battle with cancer… and how that decision ultimately forced David to build a Plan B... a way to build wealth without being chained to the dental chair.

David is a straight-shooter. He doesn't hold back. He's 100% anti-traditionalist on life, practice and wealth-building - he definitely does not follow the majority.

I've personally seen what David has done to free up the lives of a number of our colleagues.

Building a Plan B Wealth Strategy - Podcast with Dr. David Phelps

? Real-life case studies of dentists who 1-2 years ago thought they would die at the chair who are now completely free, financially and in the lives they lead…

? How to make up for lost time if you're in your 40s, 50s or 60s and already looking toward transitioning out of your practice…

? How to go from linear growth in your work-based income inside your practice to exponential growth investing in capital assets...

Discover how David invests today for cash flow, maximum safety with minimal time involvement. These are the secrets to building wealth outside of the professional practice...what David calls his "Plan B."

Most dentists are so focused on online media to include SEO, google Adwords, and social media, that they have almost completely ignored the opportunities traditional media can provide.

The trend to move online from “offline” sources and the complete abandonment in most cases of traditional ad media is a move most will soon regret.

Competition online is brutal. The cost to maintain an aggressive online presence are climbing.

Smart money moves where it’s welcome and where it can produce friends – when you spend $1 it returns with $2 or more in friends in a period of 90 days or less. An investment of $5000 should yield a $10,000 or better return in 90 days. And so on.

On today’s radio show, Jerry Jones and Kevin Anderson will explore traditional media most are ignoring and how to profit from the mass exodus of media that in most cases works as well if not better than ever before.

Today’s show is sponsored by BusyDentist.com. At BusyDentist.com, you can learn more about the upcoming JJD New Patient Extravaganza in Parsippany, NJ, October 22nd.

Let’s talk about a simple phrase we’ve all seen: “Time is of the essence.”

You’ll see that in virtually every contract you ever enter into. “Time is of the essence.”

In fact, perhaps someone should have made that a requirement when you opened the doors of your business: there is no time to waste or squander; we must grow and do it quickly and as efficiently as possible. Neither capital (money) nor time should be wasted or taken for granted.

(I should mention, if you’re interested in growing organically and slowly, this episode isn’t for you.)

If you want to grow quickly, and you understand the time value of money and the principle of the velocity of money – how fast it moves to you and works for you, or, in other words, how fast money turns over every year – you'll love the philosophy shared in Episode #9 of THE Jerry Jones Radio Show!

We're going to focus on fast growth for your practice: How to do itWhat to watch out forHow to handle challenges and,The single skill you MUST focus on if you’re to captain your ship safely. Tune in now to learn exactly how to grow your practice fast...now!

De-Constructing Effective Dental Advertising

Today’s show covers a number of elements required to create advertising that moves people to take action. Asking a postcard or a single sheet of paper or even a website to deliver a prospective long-term patient and their family to you is asking a lot. So, you must leverage every square centimeter of the real estate you have to work with.

Design is critical. The paper itself is critical (in direct mail). The ad copy -- what your ad says -- is always King. But, list or audience is most important (who you’re mailing to, who's seeing your website, etc.). You must also track results – measuring number of calls the ad produces, number of patients booked, amount of tx recommended, sold and completed in 30, 60 and 90 days.

With few exceptions, all advertising to promote a dental practice should include what we cover here today and more – we are limited on time so we won't be able to get to all of them…

I’ll be taking a deeper dive into these elements and many others, at my NPE Seminar, October 22 in NJ. Info @ BusyDentist.com

PROBLEM: Practices lose 10% of their active patients annually. In a 1,500 active patient practice, that’s 150 gone! It requires the addition of 150 new patients annually to KEEP the practice’s status quo.

SOLUTION? To add 150 new pts, at a cost of between $100 and $300 per patient, using $150 as average, the average practice will invest $22,500 in marketing to generate 150 new patients just to replace those who are now gone.

IS THERE A BETTER WAY? WHAT IS THE BEST PRACTICE TO COMBAT PATIENT ATTRITION? You bet! Today's Radio Show will reveal the answers and more!

DSOs: What are they?

According to Kevin Cain, PhD, Corporate Dentistry is “…almost always used as a synonym for dental support organizations (DSOs). These organizations (such as Heartland Dental, Aspen Dental, Great Expressions Dental Centers, and Pacific Dental Services) represent the early stages of dental industry consolidation.”

Translation: DSOs are commoditizing dentistry. For more on that particular topic and how to De-Commoditize Dentistry, I’ll direct you to the first two episodes of THE Jerry Jones Radio Show.

In today's episode, we'll dive into the 2(+) models of DSO operations and share the upsides and downsides of DSOs.

Jerry is unique in that he operates a DSO-model dental office AND has started franchising his concept to others in dentistry.
