Creating and taking care of a home doesn't stop at the front door. It extends to the land and environment around us. Today I'm talking about this with Jen Gray Blackburn, who has taught me the importance of connecting with nature and considering myself as the steward, rather than the owner, of the land around our home.
And if you dare to listen to the very end, you might enjoy a little surprise.

Today's episode is short and sweet because time slipped through my fingers this week in between work on the house, time on the road, Door County visitors and an epic bike ride through Peninsula State Park. I'm calling on the wise words of Pixie Lighthorse to share what's on my mind this week about this season of fire and energy and movement.

The flip side of missing so many loved ones in southern California is that I'm now closer to friends and family on the east coast - closer than I've been in more than twenty years. One of those friends - Blair, who I've known for 28 years - came to visit us in Door County last week. We met in Alexandria, Va, where she grew up in the same house her entire life. During her visit, we sat down to talk about what that was like, how it inspired the home she now shares with her own daughter, and the household rule she and her three brothers knew they could never break.

A hectic week of guests, time in Milwaukee and then more guests kept me away from Transplant last week, but Episode 11 is now available. This week I’m talking about my first bird nest find in Wisconsin and the new countdown to our move. We had to leave Santa Barbara, and next it will be time to arrive in Milwaukee. For real.

Learning how to create a home that reflects who I am, what I love and what I value has been a lifelong journey, starting with the blanket forts I constructed as a kid. In this episode, I talk about astrology readings and my sixth grade closet, and I have a chat with my almost-sixteen-year-old niece about all the ways her bedroom reflects her approach to life.
