Lovecraft Country
2020 HBO Drama-Horror series adapted from a 2016 novel of the same name by author Matt Ruff. The story is about a young African American who travels across the U.S. in the 1950’s in search of his missing father
Starring
Jonathan Majors- Atticus Freeman
Jurnee Smollett- Letita ‘Leti’ Lewis
Courtney B. Vance- Uncle George Freeman
Michael Kenneth WIlliams- Montrose Freeman
First episode was a pretty solid opener. It did a good job of establishing the tone of 1950's America before going to H.P. Lovecraft on us. I really felt like this pilot episode was meant to be a LOTR Fellowship of the Ring type episode where Jonathan is Frodo and he leaves the safety of the shire, Chicago, to embark on a dangerous quest to fulfill his destiny. The beauty of this episode is that it transplants trolls, goblins, and Balrog’s for Jim Crow segregation and racism. Our heroes have to be quick, smart, and lucky in order to escape and make it to the safety of Lothlorien (Ardham, or that big mansion at the end of the episode). Really though I enjoyed the beginning because it becomes so crazy so quickly with War of the Worlds type dreams while fighting in the Korean War. Also, his conversation with the woman on the road about the Princess from Mars AKA JOhn Carter, is basically him.

This is a show that tries to be complex in its portrayal of systemic racism and interpersonal violence against people of color. However, at times it doesn’t know if it wants to simply reenact racism by leaning into stereotypes and fears held in American society for decades or expose the false beliefs the behaviors reveal. Optically, it presses the shame button multiple places in the story, white man versus black man, white woman versus black woman (competing affections for the same black man - hits the “why did this fine and blessed black man pick a white woman and the competition that ensues). God as a black man. Etc. Ultimately, It didn’t strike an empathic cord, it was visually explicit, but the story narrative lacked the edginess of the visual effects. At one point I wondered if I was watching a porn video. Regina King and Hon Chau save the story with their portrayal of believable and amazing female characters. I’m not sure that even their heroics save this story from being an exploitive, manipulative, mess.
Watchman TV series is about systemic racism in that it depicts white supremacists and racists in different era’s committing racist acts on multiple levels.

Westworld Episode 8: Crisis Theory
Recap
Delores is brought back to life by Caleb and she realizes she made the right choice in Caleb. She anoints Caleb as the leader of the revolution and then tries to get him to Incite HQ to upload Solomon’s plan. This doesn’t go as planned and she fights Maeve again, but this time wins before the Ghost of Charlotte ceases all of her motor functions. When awoken she` is linked directly to Rehoboam to find the key that is supposedly in her brain. Caleb is captured by Maeve and brought to Serac and Delores, but not before Maeve figures out that Rehoboam is actually in control and Serac is basically a puppet or mouthpiece. Serac kills Delores by deleting her memories, but not before she opens her mind to Maeve and shows her the reason behind her plans all along which was to save the human race. She chooses to see the Beauty in humanity and not its evil. Maeve turns and saves the day. Delores gives Caleb control of Rehoboham and he tells it to delete itself. The war is over….or is it? Everything else is pretty much inconsequential to the overall plot.
What a season finale. Delores gives her life to save humanity.
Westworld Ep. 7: Passed Pawn
Musashi is killed by Clementine and Hanaryo while Charlotte hangs in the background with a partially reconstructed face.
Dolores and Caleb make it to the reeducation center in Mexico. They find Solomon there who is the father of Rehoboram. This obsolete AI program tells Caleb about his past as an outlier who was brainwashed into becoming a hunter of other outliers and the Riot app is run by Rehoborahm to find and apprehend outliers. Maeve soon arrives and Dolores and her get into a duel which ends with Dolores having her arm blown off before she can activate the EMP that kills her, Maeve, and Solomon. This is not before Solomon is able to generate a revolution strategy for Caleb who is now the leader, and the one to overthrow Rehoboram (and possibly the human race).
MEANWHILE, Bernard and Stubbs are with William and they are searching for something. After figuring out about he outlier program and how Serac has been treating them like hosts, the 3 of them seemingly travel to find Caleb out in Mexico when they stop at a gas station. William finds a shotgun and is holding them hostage or is about the kill them
What can we expect in the season finale? Trailers have revealed that Dolores and Maeve are very much still alive and in for one final face off? Will we have any resolution for the plot lines of this season? I honestly have no idea what to expect at this point.
**could the Caleb set up have been handled in one or two episodes?
**Couldn’t they have involved William earlier or not added this - again
**Is this the first season of a “new show”?

...host of criminals and personality disordered individuals
Tiger King is a documentary covering the ownership, exploitation, and abuse of exotic animals in America. It also covers the rather unbelievable lives of the owners of these exotic pets who’s lifestyles often seem scripted as they incorporate Tigers, drugs, polygamy, Murder for hire, and running for political office among other things. Also since it is easily the highest rated show at the moment and the one everyone has been talking about since we all have been quarantined in our homes.
Westworld Episode 4: The Mother of Exiles
Title is pretty self explanatory after watching this episode. All of our main characters are trying to figure each other out, and the audience is just trying to figure out what the hell is happening.
All of this culminates in a beautiful 3rd act where we find out who all of the hosts are. They are all copies of Dolores inhabiting other hosts bodies. William ends up at the center of the maze, broken, alone, and still trying to figure out who he is.

Westworld Season 3 Episode 3: The Absence of Field
This episode brings us back to the “Real World” Dolores is saved by Caleb which means Caleb is now being hunted by the RICO app. He is abducted and interrogated when Dolores saves his life. She then proceeds to totally tear down his reality NEO style. Caleb ends the episode basically pledging himself to Dolores and her cause.
This episode though, Is Charlotte’s episode revealing that she will be a central character this season. She is CEO of the Delos Corp, and it is found that she is bought out by Serock in a hostile takeover while also learning that there is a high level mole which turns out to be her working for Serock. She also meets up with her son Nathan Hale which causes her to grapple with the duality of lives she is living. The episode ends with her meeting Serock in which she has been trying to steal data for Serock, most likely the data that she was trying to get out of Westworld last season.

5:19 transition to story (spoilers) The Witcher Ep. 7, “ Before a Fall”
This episode brings us back to the “present day” or 1263 a few days before the Fall of CIntra. Geralt see’s the Niflgaardian army marching toward Cintra. Sensing the danger he makes his way to Cintra to take Ciri under his protection. When he makes it to Cintra he finds Queen Calanthe less then willing to give up her only grand daughter and heir to the Cintran throne to an inhuman stranger. She first tries to kill him, then trick him, then imprison him when Geralt shows he is intent on keeping Ciri safe. We then go through the final scenes of the battle of Cintra through Geralt’s eyes as he breaks from the Dungeon and looks for Ciri. Bring long gone now, Geralt flee’s the city and continues his search. Q- Bringing it back to the beginning. Does this do a good job of tying the two stories back together in a way that is “good”. Because I think it was creative, but do we think it was a good way to do it. Q- Does this make sense? Or like episode 4 are we left scratching our heads again?
Yennefer travels to Nazzir in Nilfgaard where she is reunited with Istrid. They reunite somewhat momentarily before their relationship is reluctantly cut off. Then Yennefer is met by the mage Vilgefortz who asks her to come back to Aretuza to discuss the Nilfgaardian aggression. Once there, she takes a trip down memory lane before reuniting with all the mages for a council meeting to discuss supporting Cintra who has not allowed Mages for sometime. The council votes to stay out of it, but Tesseia and Vilgefortz leads a company of mages to fight Nilfgaard. This leads them to Sodden Hill where they will make their last stand. Q- why did she return? What is she getting out of coming back to a place she seems to so thoroughly detest. Same with going to fight at Sodden Hill. Tesseia asks her to do it for her, but seriously, none of her motivations make any sense. At least not till next episode. 16:00 why is Yennefer back? Problems with time. 24:00 Geralt
Episode 8, “Much More”
32:08 Like Episode 2, this is Yennefer’s story. As they prepare for the Battle they occupy a castle sitting on the only crossing over the vast Yaruga river. Yennfer and the mages hold a vaillant defense against the Nilfaardian army and Fringilla. However, there are not enough of them and one by one they are killed or incapacitated until only Yennefer is abe to save them. She is told unleash her chaos in which she wipes out the Nilfgaardian army in a storm of fire, but then she herself disappears. 45:04 Geralt actually, and literally, takes a backseat in this episode as he is bitten by a Nekker which is deadly to humans. In and out of delirium he spends the episode having flashbacks to him as a child and being abandoned by his mother Visenya

The Witcher Ep. 4, “Of Banquets, Bastards, and Burials” -Cripples, bastards, and broken things Geralt is asked by Jaskier to attend a DInner party in the Court of the Kingdom of Cintra. It is a courting party for the hand of Princess Pavetta, Calanthe’s daughter. Geralt’s job is to protect Jaskier from the lords and nobles who wish revenge on him. Instead Queen Calanthe takes an interest in the Witcher and attempts to hire his services. This is because Calanthe knows of a beast who will crash the party and take away her beautiful daughter Pavetta. Sure enough the party is crashed by a helmeted knight who has “claim” over Pavetta according to the Law of Surprise. It turns out the knight is cursed and so he has the head of a hedgehog and so this is why Calanthe enlisted the Witcher’s help and demands the Knight be slain. Geralt refuses and instead defends the knight. This starts a brawl and ultimately it is found that the knight, named Urcheon or Duny and Pavetta are already in love with each other. So despite her reluctance, Calanthe accepts Duny and allows him to marry her daughter. This lifts the curse on Duny who turns back into a human. To repay Geralt for saving his life Duny offers him whatever reward he wishes. Geralt claims the Law of Surprise as payment and it turns out Pavetta is pregnant. The child will become Princess Cirilla and thus bind her and Geralt with Destiny. 17:47 Q- What do you think of the show choosing this scene to show that all 3 storylines are in different time periods and showing that this dinner party was at least 15 years before the Fall of Cintra. Q- Did you like the story of the cursed knight falling in love with the princess and being able to lift the curse, reverse Shrek style. Q- Did this scene make sense? I found myself having a hard time following a lot of the dialogue and events. Q- The Law of Surprise is introduced here and it, plus destiny, becomes one of the defining themes of the Witcher story. Did they do a good job explaining it and do you buy it as a lynchpin of the show moving forward.
25:30 Elsewhere this episode Yennefer has been in the court of Aedirn for 30 years now. She is accompanying Queen Kalis when their carriage is ambushed by an assassin who wants to kill the Queen. Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker Review Initial reactions This movie is bad. A vomit sandwich of Star Wars that is more a Michael Bay movie then a star wars movie. As convoluted and confusing a plot as I have ever seen, especially for a star wars movie. Way too many new ideas, plot devices, force powers, and story arcs that I cannot list them all. Way too fast paced for a 2.5 hour movie. Cutting from scene to scene I felt like I was spinning in a Lunar module for the first 30mins of the movie. It all felt disingenious. That these characters that I was supposed to know for 3 movies were fake and going all their arcs were pointless and stupid. Really only 2 character arcs. Rey and Kylo. everyone else are just there. Not to mention pointless characters that offer no extra feeling to the movie. Final act was incredibly annoying, convoluted, rushed, and ruined everything I liked about star wars. I said before I didn’t care too much about the story, but hoped the space battles would be amazing. They were terrible. Editing like a michael bay movie I had no idea what was happening throughout the battle. The huge Rebel space fleet at the end was a giant middle finger to Gandalf and the ending to the Two Towers, and gave me literally no feelings whatsoever. So what was good about the movie? C-3PO’s comic relief. One of the bright spots of the movie as he was actually pretty funny and gave positive elements to an otherwise boring movie. Rey and Kylo fight on the Deathstar. Had emotional impact when Leia dies and Rey stabs Kylo with his lightsaber. Emotionally gripping and I felt it. Chewbacca dying. Emotional stab in the heart that this movie was desperately needing, also accompanied by Rey’s use of lighting hands that foreshadows her lineage. Ultimately taken back as we find Chewie is still alive. Rey and Kylo’s force bond being expanded on more and used for both of them to continue having these great dialouges with each other, and used at the end when Rey gives Kylo her lightsaber. Very powerful. The kiss. It actually worked and cemented both their arcs for the trilogy. They were bonded throughout and needed to have that to finally embrace the bond they have.
