Episode 470 Conversations That Get Clients Hosts: Brian Miller, PCC and Chad Hall, MCC Date: June 19, 2025
In this episode, Chad and Brian dive deep into the realities of getting coaching clients, debunking the myth that "if you build it, they will come." They explore the importance of having intentional conversations as the primary engine for building a coaching practice. Through personal insights and practical frameworks like the "cold, warm, hot" conversation model, the episode emphasizes authenticity, competence, and consistency as key ingredients in client acquisition.
Key Highlights: * Clients Don’t Just Show Up: Unlike some professions like counseling, coaching requires active engagement and conversation to build visibility and trust. * The Power of Being “Not Needy and Not Weird”: The most attractive coaches (and people) present themselves confidently and without desperation. * The Cold-Warm-Hot Conversation Framework:
+ *Cold*: Encouragement-based, genuine interest in others.
+ *Warm*: Topic-based discussions showing competence.
+ *Hot*: Proposal conversations aiming for a yes or no.
Takeaways: * Client acquisition is relational, not transactional. Coaches must consistently invest in genuine conversations to build trust over time. * Being needy kills opportunities. Confidence and detachment from the outcome make you more attractive to potential clients. * Encouragement is underrated. Starting relationships with encouragement creates warmth and opens doors for deeper discussions later. * Warmth precedes depth. Coaches must first be skilled at shallow conversations before diving into deeper, transformational ones. * Conversations are the marketing strategy. You don’t need to be “in sales” to get clients—you need to connect meaningfully, regularly.

Episode 469 Telling Real Stories in a Broken World w/ David Alford and Joseph Stam Host: Brian Miller, PCC Guests: David Alford and Joseph Stam Date: June 12, 2025
In this episode, host Brian Miller speaks with filmmakers David Alford and Joseph Stam about their new film Searching for the Elephant. The conversation dives into the gritty, neo-western drama centered on a fractured relationship between a reclusive Vietnam veteran grandfather and his estranged, drug-addicted grandson. The filmmakers reflect on the story's themes, the challenges of portraying addiction authentically, and their departure from conventional Christian storytelling. They also highlight the collaborative nature of the production and share their passion for crafting emotionally honest, conflict-rich narratives that mirror the messiness of real life.
Key Highlights * Story Premise & Tone: Searching for the Elephant is a character-driven neo-western that explores emotional isolation, generational trauma, and redemption. It pushes past sanitized storytelling, embracing grittier, more realistic portrayals of pain and healing. * Authenticity in Addiction Portrayal: Joseph Stam, who plays the grandson Jason, immersed himself in research—watching documentaries, developing a backstory, and spending time with people in recovery—to ensure a truthful and respectful performance. * Intentional Departure from Hallmark-style Christian Films: The filmmakers wanted to reflect the complexity of faith and life, avoiding the overly "tidy" resolution tropes common in Christian media, aiming instead for authenticity and emotional realism. * Dynamic Character Arcs: Both the grandfather and grandson undergo parallel transformations, with layered, conflicted emotions that resonate with anyone who’s experienced strained family relationships. * Collaborative Creative Process: The team emphasized a “best idea wins” environment on set, fostering creativity among cast and crew and contributing to the film’s grounded, emotionally rich atmosphere.
Takeaways * Conflict drives great storytelling: As the filmmakers note, real drama is born from unresolved tensions—and leaning into conflict rather than avoiding it leads to more compelling narratives. * Faith-based films can be gritty and real: There's room in Christian cinema for raw, unpolished stories that still carry messages of hope and redemption without sugarcoating reality. * Authenticity requires dedication: Bringing depth to characters—especially those struggling with addiction or trauma—demands time, empathy, and careful preparation. * Humor has its place in drama: Subtle, character-grounded humor helped balance the film’s intensity, providing relief without undercutting emotional weight.

Episode 468 The Goal Isn't Unbreakable, It's Antifragile Hosts: Brian Miller, PCC and Chad Hall, MCC Date: June 5, 2025
In this thoughtful episode, Brian and Chad dive deep into the concept of antifragility, a term popularized by Jonathan Haidt (and originally coined by Nassim Nicholas Taleb). They explore what it means to not only endure difficulty but to grow stronger because of it. The conversation covers the generational impacts of overprotection, the spectrum from fragility to antifragility, personal stories, and practical applications in parenting, coaching, and personal growth.
Key Highlights * The Spectrum of Strength: The episode outlines a framework moving from fragile → unbreakable → resilient → antifragile, each with distinct responses to adversity. * Why Overprotection Fails: Brian and Chad reflect on how well-intentioned parenting often shields kids from stress, resulting in lower resilience and difficulty navigating adulthood. * Antifragility in Action: Personal stories (e.g., Chad’s son’s sports injury) demonstrate how painful life events can become transformative experiences that build true strength. * Faith and Growth: The discussion touches on spiritual perspectives, including how suffering can lead to sanctification and deeper character development. * Everyday Antifragile Practices: Simple activities like cold plunges, fasting, and difficult conversations are explored as ways to intentionally build antifragility.

Episode 465 Creating Space for Awareness Hosts: Brian Miller, PCC and Chad Hall, MCC Date: May 15, 2025
In this episode of the Coach Approach Ministries podcast, Brian Miller and Chad Hall dive deep into the core coaching competency of evoking awareness. They explore how the International Coaching Federation reframed this concept to shift the focus away from simply asking questions and toward generating new insight and understanding for clients. The conversation includes practical strategies, mindset shifts, and real-world examples to help coaches foster meaningful breakthroughs.
Key Highlights 1. The Evolution of a Core Competency: The ICF shifted from emphasizing “powerful questioning” to “evoking awareness,” highlighting that questions are just one of many tools to spark insight. 2. The Role of Deep Listening: Evoking awareness begins with truly listening — not just to words, but to tone, patterns, and what's left unsaid — with a deep sense of curiosity. 3. Avoiding Entrenchment: Coaches should be careful not to challenge clients in ways that provoke defensiveness; gentle observations or reframing can lead to more open exploration. 4. Multiple Paths to Awareness: Beyond questions, awareness can be evoked through metaphors, observations, reframing, or offering models and distinctions (like the “3 Ps” for leadership issues). 5. Shifting the Coaching Mindset: Tools like the hourglass model are not instructions for the coach but frameworks to understand and support the client’s thought journey.
Takeaways * Awareness is the goal, not the question itself — be flexible in your approach. * Curiosity is foundational: great coaches listen beyond the surface. * Evoking awareness means meeting the client where they are, even if that’s uncertainty or resistance. * Effective coaching requires patience — allow clients the space to discover rather than forcing insights.

Episode 462 Coaching as Spiritual Practice Host: Brian Miller, Executive Director of CAM Guests: Eddie Hammett, MCC and Scott Wagoner, ACC
In this episode, Brian speaks with coaches Eddie Hammett and Scott Wagner about their new book, Coaching as Spiritual Practice: Deepening Faith While Deepening Impact. The discussion explores how coaching serves not only as a professional tool but also as a deeply spiritual practice that fosters transformation through reflection, silence, and connection between head, heart, and spirit. Eddie introduces the FAITH framework as a guide to meaningful coaching conversations, while Scott emphasizes coaching’s potential to bring wholeness and clarity, especially in today’s fast-paced and spiritually questioning world. Both coaches share personal stories illustrating how coaching has helped them and their clients navigate profound life shifts, deepen faith, and uncover purpose.
Key Highlights: * Coaching as a Spiritual Practice Eddie and Scott reflect on how coaching—especially during the pandemic—revealed itself as a form of spiritual practice. It's not just about achieving goals, but fostering transformation. It invites clients to align their head, heart, and even gut, creating space for clarity, wholeness, and spiritual depth. * The Power of Silence and Spaciousness Scott, drawing from his Quaker tradition, describes the powerful role of silence in coaching. Holding space—literally through quiet—allows deeper truths and insights to rise, enabling clients to access their inner wisdom and divine guidance. * The FAITH Framework (developed by Eddie Hammett) A flexible coaching structure designed to guide reflective spiritual engagement: 1. F – Forward: What's the forward movement from the current dilemma? 2. A – Alignment: Where is there dissonance? Where do head, heart, and life experiences need alignment? 3. I – Interest: What fuels passion or blocks engagement? 4. T – Timing: What is right now asking of you? (Kairos vs. Chronos) 5. H – Heart: What’s at the core of the issue? How is it impacting decision-making and clarity? * Transformation through Coaching Both guests highlight coaching’s role in uncovering hidden beliefs, integrating life experiences, and catalyzing transformation—not just behaviorally but spiritually. Eddie shares a powerful parallel between his open-heart surgery and the clarity that spiritual coaching brings.
Takeaways: * Create intentional pauses during sessions—silence can be sacred. * Approach each conversation as an opportunity to explore meaning, vocation, and inner alignment. * Use the FAITH framework to guide clients through reflection and forward movement, not just surface action.

Episode 455 A Flywheel for Getting Clients Hosts: Brian Miller, PCC and Chad Hall, MCC Date: March 6, 2025
In this episode, Brian and Chad revisit the concept of the flywheel, a powerful metaphor for building sustained business momentum. They explore how consistent, focused effort over time leads to breakthrough success, rather than short-term, haphazard strategies. Also discussed is how this concept applies to client acquisition and the importance of leading efforts toward meaningful conversations.
Key Highlights:
Understanding the Flywheel Concept
Businesses that succeed don’t rely on stop-and-start tactics; instead, they build momentum through consistent effort in one direction.
The breakthrough moment isn’t instant; it results from sustained work over time.
The Hedgehog vs. The Fox Approach
The fox is always searching for the next quick win, jumping from strategy to strategy.
Many businesses struggle because they constantly change focus instead of committing to a long-term plan.
Applying the Flywheel to Client Acquisition
Avoid random, inconsistent tactics: sporadic ads, scattered networking, or reactive branding changes.
Overcoming resistance is key—sticking to the plan even when immediate results aren’t visible.
The Importance of Conversations in Client Acquisition
Strategies should ultimately lead to conversations—real interactions that can convert into business.

In this episode, we dive into a conversation about finding real joy in a world that feels increasingly anxious. Brant Hansen (author, advocate, and nationally syndicated radio host) discusses his new book, Life is Hard. God is Good. Let’s Dance., which explores the concept of a deep, pervasive sense of well-being regardless of circumstances. We unpack the root causes of modern anxiety, the impact of attention and choice overload, and practical ways to cultivate peace through trust and gratitude.
Key Highlights: 1. Joy Beyond Circumstances – True joy isn't about ignoring difficulties but developing a sense of well-being that transcends them. Jesus' teachings on peace are not unrealistic but attainable. 2. The Source of Anxiety – Anxiety is often shaped by what we pay attention to, not necessarily by external circumstances. Our modern culture’s constant choices and social comparisons amplify stress. 3. Outsourcing Worry to God – A simple yet powerful practice: give your worries to God, as scripture encourages, and pivot toward gratitude to cultivate peace. 4. Gratitude is a game-changer – Shifting from worry to thankfulness has proven psychological and spiritual benefits. 3. Overview In this episode, Brian Miller, Executive Director of Coach Approach Ministries (CAM), talks with Chad Hall, CAM President and creator of the new e-course, Emotions in Coaching. They discuss why understanding emotions is essential in coaching, how emotions impact decision-making, and how coaches can leverage emotions to support clients effectively. Chad introduces his 3-part framework: Expect, Explore, and Employ, to guide coaches in navigating emotions during coaching sessions.
__________
Key Points:
The Role of Emotions in Coaching - Emotions as Common Experiences: Emotions frequently surface in coaching, as clients often bring their own frustrations, hopes, and even tears into sessions. - Misconceptions About Emotions: Emotions in coaching aren't obstacles to overcome but rather insights that provide depth and connection, fostering a more profound coaching experience.
The Importance of Emotions for Decision-Making - Emotions Fuel Decisions: Emotions often provide the "why" behind decisions. Research has shown that without emotional insight, even simple decisions become difficult. - The Power of Emotional Awareness: Awareness of one’s emotions can enable clients to act with greater confidence and purpose.
Introducing the Framework: Expect, Explore, and Employ - Expect: Coaches should expect emotions to arise in sessions, and they should normalize these reactions. Strong emotions are a natural part of meaningful progress. - Explore: Coaches can help clients unpack their emotions. Distinguishing between emotions like frustration and anger can reveal deeper truths and unmet expectations. - Employ: Emotions can drive purposeful action. For instance, negative emotions often signal areas where change is needed, while positive emotions help expand horizons and build resilience.
Applications in Coaching - Emotions as Action Drivers: Strong emotions, whether up or down, can enhance the effectiveness of an action plan by strengthening accountability and motivation. - Navigating Grief and Frustration: Understanding grief’s purpose can help clients in healing and recalibrating, while frustration may indicate the need to adjust goals or expectations. - Broaden and Build Theory: Positive emotions allow clients to broaden their perspective and build resources for future challenges.

In this episode of The Coach Approach Ministries Podcast, executive director Brian Miller (Cam for short) is joined by president Chad Hall to dive into the intriguing topic of "false synonyms." They explore how commonly confused terms can lead to misunderstanding in coaching, life, and leadership.
Key Takeaways: * What Are False Synonyms?
+ Chad defines false synonyms as words or concepts we assume are interchangeable but actually have distinct meanings. This confusion can mislead our thinking and actions.
Example: Simple vs. Easy
Our Brains and Pattern Matching
Our brains naturally want to categorize and match patterns, but this can lead to false conclusions. As coaches, being aware of this tendency helps us guide clients to deeper awareness and avoid oversimplifications.
Category vs. Example
Chad explains how words like "influence" can be confused as examples rather than categories. Leadership, for example, involves many forms of influence, with inspiration being just one form. Recognizing these distinctions opens up new possibilities and prevents binary thinking.
Coaching is More Than Asking Questions
The conversation touches on the broader role of a coach. It's not just about asking questions—coaching involves creating contrast, highlighting distinctions, and evoking new awareness in clients.
Success vs. Significance
Another false synonym discussed is "success" and "significance." Clients often say they aren’t chasing success but instead want significance, yet this distinction may just be a different way to define success. Chad highlights how important it is for coaches to help clients clarify what success looks like for them.
Final Thoughts: Brian and Chad emphasize that paying attention to false synonyms allows coaches to avoid confusion and guide clients more effectively. By challenging assumptions and exploring deeper meanings, coaches help clients see clearer paths to their goals.

In this episode of the Coach Approach Ministries podcast, Executive Director Brian Miller and co-host Chad Hall dive into the intriguing concept of choosing your enemies wisely, inspired by Patrick Bet-David's book Your Next Five Moves. Chad shares his experience with the book, which, while primarily focused on business strategy, offers powerful insights on how identifying and engaging with your "enemies" can fuel your motivation and drive success.
The discussion explores how the idea of an "enemy" isn't about hostility but rather about finding what pushes you to strive for excellence. Drawing on examples like Tom Brady and Quentin Tarantino, Brian and Chad illustrate how successful people use the concept of an enemy—whether it's a competitor, a challenge, or even an internal obstacle—as a source of inspiration and energy.
They also reflect on how coaches and leaders can apply this mindset to both their personal growth and the success of their clients, emphasizing the importance of caring deeply and allowing yourself to be emotionally invested in your goals.
Whether you're a coach, a business leader, or simply someone looking to unlock greater motivation, this episode offers valuable insights on harnessing the power of competition and emotion to elevate your game.

Brian and Angie discuss Mike Glenn's open letter to the pastor who follows him. In the letter, Mike addresses five areas of ministry the next pastor of the church will have to navigate. The last one is Trauma is the new reality.
Excerpt Mike Glenn's Letter: For the Pastor Who Follows Me
Trauma is the new reality. For years we've been discussing the breakdown of the nuclear family without fully understanding the long-term ramifications. Now, those ramifications are being lived out in front of us. Few people you know, especially young adults, are stepping into their futures with a solid base for their lives. People get married hoping their partner will fix them. Couples have children hoping the child will make their marriage complete. Most people are walking around with a giant hole in their heart waiting for someone to validate their existence. This means that when we're dealing with people, the church isn't dealing with a clean slate. There's a lifetime of pain to deal with before any healing and growth can begin.
Brian and Chad talk expectations. Coaching is a relationship that functions better when the expectations are clear and explicit. Set clear expectations and then reset those expectations as you go.

Brian talks with Coach Gary Waters about being a character coach.
In Ten Principles of a Character Coach, Coach Gary Waters defines a character coach as someone who lives a life with integrity, honesty and moral values. He speaks specifically on how the sport of basketball has been riddled with scandals in recent years on the high school and college levels; and how the governing authorities are committed to repairing the reputation of college basketball. Ten Principles of a Character Coach addresses many of the issues that young men and women are experiencing in the athletic arena today. Coach Waters believes character and values need to be a high priority in those individuals tasked with guiding young people, as well as themselves. Ten Principles of a Character Coach is available now on Amazon.com.

Brian interviews David Cooke, the former director of CCLC (Certified Christian Leadership Coach) for CAM. David recently wrote one of our newest classes, Coaching Spiritual Growth. The Gospel of John, chapter 15, talks about abiding in Christ. This is a description for us of spirituality, which encompasses more than the spirit, but also the body and our emotions. Here are some bullets of the conversation: * Not a formula, but a relationship with Jesus and others - move past individuality - coaching is a good step * Exploring discontent (# 6 of 10 stops from Barna's book, Maximum Faith) * Discovering the next step of obedience (try to move forward on Barna's scale)

Brian and Chad talk about Jesus and the Kingdom and how this impacts them in their personal and professional lives as coaches:
Brian and Chad reflect on 2022 and discuss CAM developments they are excited about in 2023:
Brian talks with Paul Hall about his journey with CAM. Paul has always had a coaching mindset before he even knew what coaching was. In his role as a manager, Paul found fulfillment from helping people better themselves.
A few years ago, Paul attended a free webinar where Chad described coaching. Paul knew he was all-in and signed up for the Executive Christian Coach (ECC) program. Now Paul has earned his ECC and started his own coaching practice.
Brian talks with David Cooke about why he sends his staff through Coach Approach training. David explains how spiritual transformation happens when meaningful spiritual conversations take place. Coach Approach training provides a skillset/mindset that is extraordinarily valuable in all kinds of contexts. A Coach Approach is a good way to help people these days to grow spiritually through discipleship and evangelism by engaging in authentic conversations.
David Cooke, PCC is a pastor in Northern California with a strong church and staff. He also teaches CAM 504 The Neuroscience of Coaching and CAM 508 Coaching for Spiritual Growth for CAM.

Brian and Kyle Haack discuss how Kyle coaches pastors to make evangelism a top priority. One thing that is typically guaranteed is that evangelism is not a top priority. It's uncomfortable. It's time consuming. It requires new orbits in the pastor's life.
Working as a coach with Wheaton Billy Graham School of Evangelism, Kyle has learned three key lessons in his coaching:
When it comes to reordering a client's values, just telling them to do so doesn't change anything. You have to help the client build and stoke their own fire. This is helped along by one-on-one coaching.
Brian and Chad talk about their new eCourse which aims to help your clients gain usable self-awareness. They discuss why you should use assessments and how they chose the assessments in the eCourse.

Brian and Chad talk about the Disturbance Model that speaks of using power to influence a given cause. When a leader uses power to influence their cause, resistance will be a by-product. It is easy to demonize the resistance, but a good leader will instead learn from the resistance.

Brian and Chad talk about a model called the Leadership Energy Matrix. Chad originally learned about this model from Scott Eblin, Chad's first coach.
The matrix is built from two axis. The first is around whether your leadership energy is positive or negative. The second is whether your leadership energy is high or low. One might think that the best combination would be high-positive energy. However, the matrix shows that all four combinations are useful in their appropriate moments.

Brian and Chad discuss a model for small business leaders from the book The E-Myth. The E is short for entrepreneurial. (Maybe they should have just called it The Entrepreneurial Myth.) The simple distinction is that small business entrepreneurs must wear three hats: 1. The technician 2. The manager 3. The owner
In this episode, we discuss how a coach can use this model to evoke awareness in their clients.
Brian and Chad discuss ways to get to the heart of the matter in coaching. Too many coaching conversations just scratch the surface of the issue. The topic as well as the person need to explore at a much deeper level in order to create deep awareness, solid accountability, and a helpful learning plan. Brian and Chad give several do's and don'ts.
Executive coach Grant Tate talks to Michael Cheuk about his newly published book Hand on the Shoulder: Finding Freedom in the Confluence of Love and Career. Tate reflects on the joys and absurdities of work life and the struggle to find balance between personal ambition and the human need for love.
Brian and Chad talk about four keys to adaptive change by listening to four clips from the movie Moneyball. Whether you love baseball or not, (Chad does, Brian does not), you'll love this important podcast about how to bring change to your organization.
There are four layers that make up every organization (that is, a group of people gathered together in a structured manner for a specific purpose):
These four layers are always simultaneously present in everything the organization does. Challenges occur when one layer isn't functioning well or otherwise functioning layers aren't aligned.
The work of organizational development is fundamentally about discerning where the pressure points are (given these 4 layers) and then partnering with organizational leaders to make needed shifts.
Group training, individual coaching, and leadership team development are simply different means to work toward this same end (and therefore should reflect the same philosophy).

Jane Creswell is a pioneer in the coaching field and one of the founders of Coach Approach Ministries. Whenever I'm with her, I can feel the power of her coaching knowledge. In this podcast, she describes how to do Group Coaching in such a succinct way that I think you should be able to give it a shot. Group coaching certainly has advantages, which are lower cost for those involved and can actually be higher income for those who do it. Here are some notes for Group Coaching. 1. Identify a topic that is important to everyone in the group. 2. The group comes together with the topic already set so that affinity is very high. 3. Set up an expectation of how individuals should work in this setting. 4. Ask the group to share successes in the area of this topic. 5. While they share, listen for resonance in the group so you can narrow the topic. 6. Pick one person to be the voice of the group and coach that individual. 7. Tell everyone else to create an action for themselves as the one is being coached. 8. At the end, every single person voices their action step.

Brian and Chad discuss what assessment Brian should use when he is creating awareness for a church leadership team.
In last week's podcast, Chad and I (Brian) talked about the Empowerment Triangle, created by David Emerald. This framework had just been on Chad's mind lately, and it was a great topic for the two of us to talk through. Very helpful.
To my surprise, as I looked at the podcast for this week, we set aside fifth Thursdays to feature interviews by Michael Cheuk for Christian Coaching Magazine. I honestly had no idea, but guess who Michael had recently interviewed? David Emerald, creator of the Empowerment Triangle. I think this counts as a "God thing".

Brian and Chad take on this important topic and make a distinction between general depression and clinical depression. They also determine that coaching does have borders and isn't effective for everyone.
Triple Loop Learning was discovered by Chris Argyris, a Harvard Professor. We discovered it in Robert Hargrove's book, Masterful Coaching.
The three loops are often called by different names, but one set of names are:
Action
Strategy
Identity

Brian and Chad build on episode 250 Coaching the Inner Critic and expand the discussion to the external critic and the cultural critic. If you'd like more, you can look at Gallwey's book The Inner Game of Work.
Karen Howells, founder of The Howell's Group, shares the growth of her business over 33 years, starting with a desperate search for one client to building a staff of seven.
One great takeaway is when Karen said God gave her one client and told her to do well with that one client. Then He gave her another client.
Chad and Brian talk about Timothy Gallwey's great work on quieting the inner critic. The cost of not silencing these voices is our personal performance. Gallwey applied this to many sports, including tennis, gold, and skiing, and then applied it to the workforce, helping AT&T when their monopoly was broken apart.
A great video that demonstrates Gallwey's discovery is this ancient video of Gallwey teaching a person who has never played tennis how play and enjoy tennis in 30 minutes.

Framework coaching creates a way for the coach to bring some expertise into the coaching. This helps the coach create a healthy way to market coaching.
The framework comes out of listening to a number of clients in a particular niche.
The framework may suggest the topic for the client.
The framework may be linear or topical.
The framework does not provide the solution but creates awareness around an issue critical to the client's niche.
The framework provides a plethora of true statements that can be shared as appropriate.
Framework coaching makes it easier to attract clients.
Brian and Chad explore how framework coaching is being used in a few specific industries. They also examine the tension between framework coaching and formula coaching.
At the launch of their new E-Course, Frameworks for Successful Coaching, Brian and Chad walk through the five essential elements of a coaching framework.

Brian interviews Dr. Tod Bolsinger, author of Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory. Tod is the Vice President and chief of leadership formation at Fuller Seminary. He is an ordained pastor and consults and coaches with churches and nonprofits. Adaptive challenges are those that “cannot be solved with one’s existing knowledge and skills, requiring people to make a shift in their values, expectations, attitudes, or habits of behavior.” An understanding of this kind of adaptive leadership has three characteristics: 1. a changing environment where there is no clear answer 2. the necessity for both leaders and followers to learn, especially the leader’s own ongoing transformation 3. the unavoidable reality that a new solution will result in loss From Tod's book, a list of questions and suggestions he often asks his coaching clients: * What is the song behind the words that is keeping us all dancing? In other words, what deeper tune of the church is getting played in this circumstance? What is going on in this situation that nobody is talking about but is affecting the whole system of the church? - p 115 * I also often coach my pastor clients to give a yearly “I Have a Dream” sermon in order to keep raising the urgency in the congregation. - p 142 * As a coach to pastors, I am almost always in the role of confidant. - p 159 * I tell my coaching clients, “You must bring yourself to your role, but you are not your role.” - p 211 * I often coach my clients, “Make your goal in every conversation to have someone roll their eyes upward (which indicates that they are thinking differently) and say, ‘That’s a great question.’” - p 213

Brian interviews Darren J. Ho, Founder and Leadership Coach. Being a leader is not a position you earn or choose, but a calling to serve others. Darren has over 500 hours of experience coaching influential leaders around the globe. He has 21 years of global business experience with leadership assignments in the US, and as an expatriate in Asia and Europe. These experiences have given him valuable wisdom about the foundations of effective leadership. IDENTIFY Core Values are undeniable truths that reflect how you make sense of the world. They are your greatest asset helping you lead with authenticity, confidence and joy. If you don't lead with your Core Values, then you likely aren’t leading authentically. PRACTICE Every conversation in every relationship is an opportunity to practice being the leader you’ve always desired to become. Using your Core Values in daily conversations will increase your confidence as a leader. PROTECT Rest is the most important discipline when it comes to protecting your Core Values.
Brian and Chad talk about three deep shifts that pastoral leaders need to make to be effective.
Marc Cortez is a Professor of Theology at Wheaton College and is a leading expert in theological anthropology, an area of theology that focuses on what Christians believe about human persons. He is particularly interested these days in the imago Dei, the idea that humans were created in the image of God and what that means for humanity.
"We see a growing lack of confidence in our ability to answer the question of essence, "What am I?" - Marc Cortez, Theological Anthropology: A Guide for the Perplexed.
Brian and Chad unpack emotional intelligence, a key skill for coaches. Emotional intelligence has four aspects - aware of your own emotions, managing your own emotions, aware of other people's emotions, and adapting how you show up.
This week, Brian interviews Rick Dunn, pastor the Fellowship Church in Knoxville, TN. Angie Ward, one of our favorite guests on the podcasts, told Brian that Rick Dunn is the one to talk about when it comes to adaptive leadership.
This week's podcast proves it. The concepts are so different from what we're used to hearing, it is difficult to even create an outline of this conversation. A few links from the conversation are below, but this is best enjoyed in just listening to the conversation. Enjoy. You can hear more of Rick on his podcast called Life Reframed.

Brian and Chad talk about a Coach Approach Preaching. This is a fascinating conversation about applying coaching competencies to another field. Specifically, Chad and Brian apply agreements, active listening and powerful questioning to preaching.
Linda Miller has been an Executive Coach for decades. She describes an Executive Coach as a deeply present thought partner, who models behaviors that leaders can use in their leadership.
She says there are three things a coach must do for the leaders.
Brian and Chad explore how framework coaching is being used in a few specific industries. They also examine the tension between framework coaching and formula coaching.
Brian and Chad explore the theology of coaching. They talk about the flourishing life that Jesus offers, the fact that humans are wholistic beings, and that Christians are missional people, attempting to join God where He is already working.
This week Brian interviews Rick Richardson, Professor of Evangelism and Leadership at Wheaton College, Director of Wheaton College Billy Graham Center Research Institute, and Director of the Church Evangelism Initiative. Rick is the author of You Found Me: New Research on How Unchurched Nones, Millennials, and Irreligious Are Surprisingly Open to Christian Faith Rick sees how coaching is essential to the church to help her fulfill her potential. Check out this statistic from Rick's work with the Church Evangelism Initiative: Without coaching, they were seeing 10% success. Adding coaching and changing nothing else, success jumped to 50%. Now to go higher, they are adding a heavier coaching element.
Quite often when a coaching relationship isn't working, you should revisit the agreements. Agreements are not a "set it and forget it" item.
Here are a few agreements to consider:
Third party agreements should be given special consideration.
Brian and Chad discuss the GROW model for coaching and walk through each step. This is a deeper dive than you might have already taken.
Brian interviews Evan Courtney, owner of Creative Courtney, a web design agency to find out what is essential for a coaching website.
Evan says the first thing to ask is "What do you want the visitor to do on your site?" Most likely, you want the visitor to take an action. Make it obvious what option you want the visitor to take.
Chad and Brian discuss self-differentiated leadership championed by Edwin Friedman in his book A Failure of Nerve.
The five aspects that Friedman says self-differentiates leaders are:
Perry Rhue has been a professional coach for over 20 years and is currently operating Ekklesia - For Coaches by Coaches, helping successful business and life coaches become MORE SUCCESSFUL. Getting from zero clients to one client is the hardest transition you'll ever make as a coach. Second hardest is going from five clients to fifty. Brian and Chad talk about three necessary shifts.
Raise your rate - shifting to a niche that can afford to pay the necessary fee
Increase your funnel - find a way to draw client into your sphere
Treat your practice more like a business

This allows the client to come to issues without an anxiousness, which is essential to leading in the constantly changing world we live in today.
In Tod Bolsinger's book, Canoeing the Mountains, he says that relational congruence is one of three keys to leadership.
Four necessary steps to launching a business correctly. Scott Brookens from ScottBrookens.com joins the podcast.
Once in a while you come across a concept that really changes the way you think and approach things. This is true of Cal Newport’s book, So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love. Basic concept: Passion follows mastery. Coaches love things like “passion.” Maybe too much. We’re not saying passion doesn’t matter; we’re just saying that sitting around waiting for passion is a poor strategy. Try things and see what stirs your interest. Let the interest develop into skill, and then mastery will unlock passion. Usefulness in coaching: · When a client is trying to “discover” passion. · Career coaching. · When faced with a challenge that’s a bit too much, passion is lacking.
Gem and Alan Fadling are founders of Unhurried Living, Inc., a non-profit that resources and trains Christian leaders to rest deeper, live fuller, and lead better. They talk to Michael Cheuk, editor of Christian Coaching Magazine, about their new book, What Does Your Soul Love? Eight Questions That Reveal God's Work in You.
As coaches, we've noticed that our clients aren't celebrating enough. And what they do celebrate is often narrow and internal. In this podcast, Chad and Brian consider how to draw more awareness from our clients as they consider celebration.
Doug Guthrie was a rising star in academia until 2013 when, like Icarus, he flew too close to the sun. In 2010, Guthrie was hired as the dean of the George Washington University School of Business. He had great vision but lacked people skills. In 2013, he was released as Dean and had to find a healthy mindset to move forward from a public failure.
In this podcast, Guthrie opens up about those difficult days and how to develop the necessary humbleness to lead well.
Setting the context is a skill that good communicators master. When the context is not set, the listener is wondering, "what are we talking about?" It is as if the listener wandered into the conversation halfway through.
A good communicator starts with the context so that the listener can enter the conversation immediately.
In this podcast, Brian asks Chad how he is so good at setting context.

Everybody has embedded theology. These are beliefs that we have that we aren't sure where it came from or even whether we truly believe it. A coach can bring this theology into our awareness and provide a safe place for us to give our own theology further consideration.
In this episode, Brian is joined by Dr. Kathryn Helleman, Director of Institutional Assessment and Planning and Adjunct in Christian Ethics at Winebrenner Theological Seminary. Together they discuss how to coach around embedded theology.
The High Performance Pattern (HPP) assessment was created by Dr. Jerry Fletcher, a professor at Harvard. Since his death, the HPP has been championed by Coach Approach Ministries.
The HPP honors the fact that everyone can perform at a high level, but the way they get to that level is unique to them. Everyone who has been introduced to this assessment has found it to be profoundly impactful.
Brian and Chad began this talk about the HPP in episode # 177 and conclude their conversation here in episode # 179.
Brian interviews David Cooke, the director of CCLC (Certified Christian Leadership Coach) for CAM. David recently wrote one of our newest classes, Coaching Spiritual Growth. The Gospel of John, chapter 15, talks about abiding in Christ. This is a description for us of spirituality, which encompasses more than the spirit, but also the body and our emotions. The tables are turned this week, as Michael Cheuk, the editor of Christian Coaching Magazine (www.christiancoachingmag.com) interviews Brian on the topic of How Much Do I Charge for Coaching?
Brian and Chad dig into the ICF competency of Designing Actions and geek out on its focus on learning.
Brian interviews Rev Debbie Foster, who is a pastor to pastors, and takes a coach approach to EVERYTHING in her ministry.
She makes this bold statement early in the podcast: "I wouldn't still be in ministry today if it weren't for the coach approach to my work."
Here are a few bullet points to the interview:
Brian was reading Tim Hicks book, Embodied Conflict, and came across the term "Maybe Capacity". Hicks writes: We can create a type of understanding that allows for the coexistence of mutually contradictory accounts, what might be called a “maybe capacity,” a looser attachment to hypothesis formation that allows us to be receptive to, and to convey our openness to, each party without fully subscribing to their account or to our own internal responses to their account. That is kind of a mouthful. Brian and Chad break the "Maybe Capacity" down to a level that every coach can use. Here are some highlights: * Get comfortable with not knowing * Ask questions that are wide open at the beginning * Create a "frame" for the client to design actions * Let the Client assign the meaning and action to the issue (and yet keep them in a maybe capacity)
Brian interviews Ken Kessler about his role in creating a coaching culture in his denomination.
Ken is the Director of the Coaching Network for the Baptist General Association of Virginia (bgav.org)
They discuss the dynamics of creating a coaching culture.
Brian and Chad discuss the easy trap of turning a coaching conversation into an interrogation. Too many questions!
They explore other ways to create a conversation without the overuse of Powerful Questioning.
Merlin Switzer is the Founder and CEO of Switzer Associates (switzeronleadership.com). He is certified as a PCC coach with the International Coach Federation, and he is our guest today on the Coach Approach Ministries Podcast.
His calling is to coach leaders, especially senior leaders and business owners. He believes that if he can impact a leader, there is a rippling effect throughout the organization. The higher the leader is in an organization, the greater the impact.
Brian and Chad discuss the "typical twelve" responses to distress. These are responses coaches should avoid. 1. Advising: I think you should leave the room the second he raises his voice. 2. One-upping: You think that’s bad? Let me tell you about the rages my husband gets into. 3. Educating: I can recommend a really good book that describes what happens in the brain when you’ve been traumatized as a child. 4. Analyzing: It sounds like you have internalized your father’s rages so that your husband’s raised voice triggers that old fear. 5. Storytelling: Did I ever tell you what I did on my honeymoon when my husband yelled at me? 6. Minimizing: Well, at least he doesn’t hit you the way your father did. 7. Sympathizing: I feel frightened when I hear how angry he gets. 8. Interrogating: How often does he go into one of these rages? 9. Reassuring: I’m confident that you’ll find a way to resolve this together; the two of you have been through a lot. 10. Avoiding: Let’s talk about something else, OK? This topic is quite upsetting. 11. Diagnosing: It sounds like you have some typical codependent personality traits. OR It sounds like he has dysfunctional anger syndrome. 12. Judging: It sounds like you’ve made a poor choice in a spouse.
Three types of coaching models are described in this episode, along with clues that might indicate the need for a different model. Also, Chad gives one thing he doesn't like about Abraham Lincoln.

While standards and boundaries sound boring, this podcast is anything but that!
Standards are personal expectations you have for yourself. Everyone has standards about such things as appearance, mates, vehicles, organization, and so on. Standards can be too high or too low. This can cause conflict.
Boundaries are what we allow other people to do to us or around us. Boundaries have to be expressed and enforced. Not everyone is going to like your boundaries.
Chad and Brian break these down and discuss how they interact.
Travis Guse is a certified strength coach. Travis talks about how his journey came through strengths and how he uses strengths in his coaching. You can find out more about Travis at www.strengthssolutions.org.

Without diving deep into the sport of professional basketball, Brian and Chad take a look at the lessons we can learn from Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, who have won three championships in five years. Kerr doesn't yell or pace the sidelines. He listens and observes much more than he speaks. He creates an open and trusting atmosphere among some of the highest paid and talented athletes in the world. There is much we can learn from Steve Kerr and apply to our coaching and leadership.
Jane Creswell, MCC is a Co-founder of Coach Approach Ministries. She spends most of her time working with corporations to create a coaching culture but her covert mission is to bring Christ in those companies. Under Coaching Presence coachfederation.org/pcc-markers 1. Coach partners with the client by supporting the client to choose what happens in the session. 2. Coach partners with the client by inviting the client to respond in any way to the coach’s contributions and accepts the client’s response. 3. Coach partners with the client by playing back the client’s expressed possibilities for the client to choose from. 4. Coach partners with the client by encouraging the client to formulate his or her own learning.

PCC Quality Coaching is Your Next Step. Here are four cornerstone elements that support PCC level coaching: 1. PCC coaches have a balance between focus and exploration. (ACC coaches typically go one way or the other) 2. PCC coaches are easy to talk to. (not judgmental, conversational, no agenda) 3. PCC coaches create new awareness. (not "what are your options", creativity, risks, stimulant to client thinking) 4. PCC coaches are really good at designing actions (ACC coaches typically only identify actions)

Today Brian interviews Dr.

Chad and Brian give three answers to the question "How is Christian Coaching Different?"
Coaching is a profession like cooking and plumbing. The basic skills are not any different than regular old coaching.
The basic skills are the same, but we bring the power of the Holy Spirit. We bring concepts like forgiveness and redemption. We have a different view of what makes a person human. We know there is a purpose to life.
This is where people get into trouble calling what they do coaching. If it's totally different, it isn't coaching.

Chad and Brian continue their conversation about the Core Values Index and focus in part 2 on how to use the CVI.
When a client knows and understands his unique mixture of core values, it can help them navigate life with greater success. Here are four ways we use CVI with clients.
First, with organizations, we use the CVI to help them hire for fit.
Second, with teams, we use the CVI to help them know how to get the most of each member of the team.
Third, with individual clients who are looking for a career change or job shift the CVI can shed light on what sort of job they’d find most fulfilling and energizing.
Finally, with individual clients who want to be more fulfilled and energized in their current role.
To take the assessment for free, go to coachapproachministries.org/assessment
Chad and Brian talk about their favorite assessment, the Core Values Index (CVI). The CVI is designed to help a person know how best they contribute. It was originally designed to help companies and organizations hire people who were a great fit for a particular role, what they call “A Players.” They found that beneath having the skills and the experience needed to do well in a job, that what really drives success is the extent to which the role allows a person to express their unique combination of core values.
The CVI has two modes: free and complete. The free version will tell you what your two primary core values are, for example: Builder/Innovator. The complete will tell you the scores for each of the four values. Each of the four has a score between 1 and 36.

How does coaching relate to each of these? 1. Training - Can lead to coaching... Great content that needs put into practice. 2. Leadership Development - Not as content specific as training. What's it take for you to be successful in this role as a leader? Naturally coaching, but may need some training. May need mentoring, facilitation, feedback. 3. Organizational Development - Leader can only develop as far as org will allow it. Leader is creating positive change. Org accepts or pushes back. Coaching an entire org.

PCC Quality Coaching is Your Next Step Here are four cornerstone elements that support PCC level coaching. 1.

Laura-Catherine (LC) Etheridge and Bryan Pettet are Christians who make six figures each coaching full-time. For them, it absolutely isn't about the money. The reason I mention it is because I want to encourage our listeners that you can make good money using your coaching skills. You can live a sustained life as a coach. Bryan and LC are just great human beings, and you pick that up very quickly. There is a lot of goodness in this podcast, but I boiled down a few take aways so that as you listen, maybe you won't have to take as many notes. We treat conversations with potential clients as a coaching conversation * Do it in person * High quality conversation * Let them feel the difference
We don't have a program. We listen and bring value where they need it. * Encouragement * Clarity * Coaching is networking. Networking is coaching.
Word of mouth is our best marketing technique. * We ask for introductions to others.
Feel confident in your training going into the conversation. * Coaching works * Treat it as God's calling in your life
Count conversations not closings. * It takes 6 months to 18 months to gain a client. * Make friends with the kind of people you want as clients.

Link to Jane's other podcasts. Episodes # 17 & 18 Here are some notes for Group Coaching.

Coaches love to coach, and they aren't that picky to who they coach. But to build a clientele, you have to narrow your market so that your potential client knows that you'd like to coach them. In this podcast, Chad Hall and I drill down into this issue.
5 keys to cross-cultural coaching 1. All coaching is cross-cultural (no one is the same) 2. Language (what communicates, what doesn't (You should say "does not.")
3. Traditions (what do people regard as valuable - good manners) 4. Modalities (how you meet?)
5. Trust Two helpful books: Kiss, Bow and Shake Hands (book) Dancing Between Cultures (book) Link to previous podcasts: #036 The Quickest Way to Destroy Your Coaching Practice Find out more about Michael Marx at: www.blazingnewtrailscoaching.com
An outlandish question is a creative question that forces the client to stop and think. It is often risky in that the client might not immediately see the relevance of the question. Chad and Brian have a lot of fun with this topic.
Brian and Chad debrief their learnings so far about Coach the Person Not the Problem.
Bad: Reveal the coaches intelligence, not curious, leading, ... Good: Are designed to get the client to think. Tell me what you are thinking. (Not "Tell me.") Test questions. Better: Designed to spur new thinking. Create new awareness. Discovery questions. Thinking in a really different way. Best: Invite the client to make an internal shift. Shift about themselves, not just about the issue.
Chad Hall, Bill Copper, and Brian Miller each share how coaching has brought them closer to Jesus.

We bring something that secular coaches can't bring. We bring Jesus. But now a word of caution. We don't assume our client's agenda. And so we must be careful not to assume Jesus' agenda. Chad and I are going to discuss 5 ways you can bring Jesus into your coaching sessions without assuming His agenda. 1. Exude a quiet evidence that Jesus is already working in you. 2. Create an awareness of how Jesus has already been at work in the client's life. 3. Create an awareness of God given purpose in the client's life. 4. Create space for the client to invite Jesus into the conversation. 5. Create an awareness of how Jesus might partner with the client.

Chuck Gohn is the Senior of a small, independent, non-denominational church on the north side of Pittsburgh. For the last two years, Chuck has been attempting to implement a coaching culture as part of the overall discipleship model for the church.
Reach Chuck at bellevuechristian.church or chuckpgohn@gmail.com. Challenges of implementation: * People don't "get" coaching or reject as trendy.
* Because of relational aspect, women gravitate to coaching more than men.
Joys of implementation: * High Impact low investment of time. Very good ministry for a person with not a lot of time but has the desire to contribute in a significant way. * Takes away the excuse for people not growing in their faith. * Small groups have validity, but a person can hide for years. Coaching places them in a growth position
Advice for implementing coaching in the local church. * Some are not coachable (need to be creative, resourceful, whole) * Take it slow. Don't advertise a coaching workshop. Hand pick a few people and begin coaching them. * Celebrate wins. Get a cheerleader. * Require your potential coaches to be coached

In this episode, Brian and Chad assess your website for clear action steps. Your website's # 1 purpose is not to give information. It is to let your clients know what action they should take next with you. You want some type of big flashing button. Well, maybe not a big flashing button, but the point is, the client shouldn't be able to miss it. Possible Action Steps 1. Let's go on another date 2. Let's get married

In this episode, Chad and I talk about how to end a coaching relationship well. We don't want to leave the relationship with an awkward feel.
We'll answer these three questions.
Why do people need to think about Ongoing Growth? Coaches need an intentional desire to always be a little better. What are 3 areas people need to grow? 1. Confidence 2. Competence a. Creativity b. Risk taking c. Bottom line d. Manage time 3. Different kinds of clients Besides classes, what are 3 opportunities for growth? 1. Hire a very different coach 2. Get feedback on your own coaching 3. Go to a different conference that grows a skill that can be brought into your coaching.
What does it mean to create awareness? * New Knowledge * New Perspective * New Connections
What are a few ways to improve our ability to create awareness in our clients? * Get “pushier” when it comes to challenging your client to expand options * Ask better, more thought-provoking questions in contrast to questions that just invite the client to cover familiar territory * Dial up your own creativity in terms of what you’re willing to try (and risk) * Develop a tool or resource designed to spur client creativity
Today, Chad and Brian discuss "Things # 6, 7, and 8", which all revolve around getting clients. You can be the most skilled coach in the world, but without clients, you aren't very effective.
Challenge: Sell a Solution Not Yourself Two Purposes for Coaching Packages

I'm Brian Miller, Strategic Director for Coach Approach Ministries, CAM for short, and I'm joined here today by... Neil Prentice (http://www.coaching4discipleship.com)
“Go and make disciples” was the command that Neil heard as a teenager. His passion of making disciples fulfills his value of making an impact in the world. He grew up in a Christian home where he was instilled with solid values, one of which was to make a difference.
Neil understands ministry. He was an Associate Pastor for 19 years in Delaware where he learned about teamwork both with paid staff and with a volunteer staff of over 200. It was here that he learned the importance of God’s Word in his life. Neil understands the challenges that come along with the pastoral call.
The call to missions was one that Neil wasn’t expecting, but he answered that call and, after 15 years, continues to serve in Mexico. It was during those early years in Mexico that God opened his eyes to Cheryl, a wonderful lady that Neil grew up with in his church. Cheryl, too, had been called to Mexico. Neil and Cheryl followed the Lord’s leading in marriage in 2004.
As part of their ministry, they have become certified through the International Coach Federation (ICF) to be coaches for their mission agency. They use their coaching skills in discipleship ministries in Mexico and with Pastors and missionaries around the world.
Go upstream and find out why the client isn't showing up ready for forward movement 1. Overall topic for the relationship 2. Maintenance client may bop around 3. Third party sponsorship What do I do today?

I'm Brian Miller, Strategic Director for Coach Approach Ministries, CAM for short, and I'm joined here today by... Chad Hall. Today, we're looking at questions, and we want to show you the different between bad questions, good questions, better questions, and best questions. Bad Questions reveal the coach's intelligence, not curious, leading, ... Good Questions are designed to get the client to think. Tell me what you are thinking. Test questions. Better Questions are designed to spur new thinking. Create new awareness. Discovery questions. Thinking in a really different way. Best Questions invite the client to make an internal shift. Shift about themselves, not just about the issue.
Bad: Reveal the coaches intelligence, not curious, leading, ... Good: Are designed to get the client to think. Tell me what you are thinking. (Not Tell me.) Test questions. Better: Designed to spur new thinking. Create new awareness. Discovery questions. Thinking in a really different way. Best: Invite the client to make an internal shift. Shift about themselves, not just about the issue.
