How do little lights turn into demons' eyes in the darkness? How can favored toys become the silhouettes of ghosts and monsters? How can happy dreams transform into a nightmare so fast If one imagines that? How can a reflection lurk behind a mirror with plans of its own? How can one's perception soon become unclear when all alone? Maybe that's the reason you're living in the deep end: You doubt your own self, well, then what can you believe in? Where can your mind go if you're not in control? It's a fine line, when imagination stands upon a knife, Swept into your fears with the returning tide, Fear so real you think you could drown. And your shadow grows, so big you think that you have been swallowed whole. I wonder, can it grow If the light isn't close? Thrown into the world, you learn to play your role in the drama. Now that you're grown-up, you let your kid fears go, but keep your trauma. Running from your demons, not wanting to dig deeper - Too scared of the roots you left buried in the graveyard Where your innocence and freedom went to die. It's a fine line, when imagination stands upon a knife. Take it from your back and turn to face the tide. Use its strength to turn it around, Because any change you'll ever make will start with one simple thing a child understands. So learn again: How they find a castle where you see a tree - no magic required. How their stubby arms transform to eagles' wings and take them higher. How can they begin to see a brighter world where they stand? Well, they imagine that.
I wrote this song with inspiration from a dream I had one night, about a humble soldier who watched the entire army of his people get destroyed by an army of darkness. When the enemies saw him on the ground and believed him to be dead with the others, he realized it was up to him to save the kingdom by stealth and strategy where the numbers in the army had failed. I included some of these lyrics in my book, "Witness in the Dark." Now you can hear what they were singing. Verse 1: Lord, I was so very young, had no clue what I'd just begun. Chose the road of change and trial, and I followed you as a child. You gave me faith to believe in the things I couldn't see. "Soon the war will be over and we will be free! Keep on fighting, brave soldiers, your eyes are on the King!" I was so naive. But You kept on saying I'd have to be strong And I had no idea why, but still I went on. With no earthly protection, went on to perfection, cuz Something kept bidding me go on. Verse 2: No, this hasn't been easy. What's been happening to me? From a child to a man - I can hardly understand. It's been a challenge for me to take what you were whispering: "When you're lacking in something, I don't want you to hide. Don't find strength in another - develop it inside." To you alone I cried, saying, "Show me how to be complete in you. For this war to be won, what would you have me do? Lord, the warriors are falling. If this is your calling - If nobody's winning, then it's on. Verse 3: I've been wrestling with you like I never thought I'd need to. You have me face my own self, as I follow you through hell. You are my challenge and my strength, both my trial and my faith. Cast out every distraction! I want to hear your call. I've no reason to fight if I can't give it my all. Let nothing be my fall. I have been learning to fight like a pro, And I know you will teach me all I need to know. Though it seems I'm mistaken and all have forsaken me - Something still bids me to go on. Something still bids me to go on. Written March 10th-11th, 2014
A song written long ago by my sister and me. Lyrics: Jerome was locked in a dungeon, His conscience condemning his choice To give in to recantation, And to silence his protesting voice. John Huss, his friend, had bravely endured, Till he sealed his decision with his death. And amidst those flames, his salvation was sure, And songs of prayer were on his dying breath. But Jerome lost his faith, And his trust in the Lord. So when his trial came, He failed to endure. John Huss had been so faithful, though it led him to the stake. And now Jerome remembered the truth he did forsake. And the thought of those flames made him ashamed. Do John Huss's flames make you ashamed?
