A lot of us are re-evaluating our routines at the moment. I tend to give my routine a tweak or even a total reset as the seasons change, and for lots of us, living through a pandemic has prompted us to reevaluate and reset our routines.

Having a routine helps us save time AND mental energy. But also, at times like these, having a routine can help us feel that sense of normal that we’re all craving. So, now is a better time than ever to give your routine a dust-down and a reset.

Syreeta and her partner Rob were just a normal couple living in Hong Kong, pursuing creative careers when, in 2014, Rob suddenly suffered a near-fatal brain haemorrhage and stroke while on holiday in Sydney. Their lives were turned upside down in an instant. Rob was left paralysed on his right side and with Aphasia which affects his speech, and Syreeta had to deal with the complexities of becoming a full time carer as well as Robs partner.

Syreeta started her blog as a creative outlet and as a place to deal with the trauma through writing, imagery and song. This served as base when they joined forces to create their brand, Moments of Sense and Style (MOSS). The brand was formed as a way to create light out of darkness, an innovative and conceptual approach to dealing with life changing events. In this episode I chat to Syreeta about her and Rob’s story and how they’ve grown a hugely meaningful business in the wake of trauma.

I’m super excited to share this week’s episode, which is a chat with the wonderful Hannah Bullivant. Not only is she an incredible stylist, writer and mum of two but she also has a big place in her heart for planning, which started with The Life book. Hannah’s Life Book, which she now shares as a course and series of printables on her website, started life as a process her and her husband went through each year to figure out where they wanted their lives to go and how they were going to get there. Something Hannah’s discovered over the 10+ years she’s now been ‘life booking’ is how kindness and self-empathy can play a huge role in helping us make realistic plans and reach our goals (or to turn around that traditional concept of ‘failure’ if we don’t).

The other thing Hannah is passionate about when it comes to planning is planning for imperfect people, AKA anyone who feels like that don’t have their shit together, is a mum raising children, is someone struggling with their mental or physical health, the list goes on. Because in fact, we’re all imperfect in our own way and there’s lots we can learn from Hannah’s approach to planning for work and life, lots of which she shares in this episode.

In this mentoring episode I’m talking about making a product launch plan with artist and scientist Agnes Becker from We Are Stardust. Agnes has been running her business as a side-hustle since 2016 and she’s now juggling it alongside looking after her 18month year old daughter and doing some freelance work as well.

Agnes has a lot on her plate so understandably she often struggles to find enough time to work on her creative business which results in sporadic new product launches which are also sometimes a little last minute.

We look at introducing a launching cycle in her business to create a routine that will help her plan ahead more effectively and keep launching seasonal card designs and prints each quarter. We also talk through making a 12-week plan for the following few months to help embed this new seasonal routine.

In this episode I’m chatting with writing coach, speaker and author of two books Greta Solomon. Greta’s mission is to help people better express themselves through their writing.

It’s a complete guide to expressing yourself through your writing and that’s what we’re chatting about in this episode. Greta also shares some super practical exercises to help you boost your confidence with writing and blogging and help you express yourself better.

In this episode I’m chatting with Kat Horrocks who is a women’s life coach based in Manchester. Something that, I think it’s safe to say, most women struggle with.

Ingrid set up her own legal consulting business just over 12 months ago after nearly 10 years of working as a commercial lawyer. She was looking for a way to continue doing her work after having children, in a way that would give her the flexibility to raise a family. This is where she discovered her passion for helping other small businesses and parent-run businesses with their legal documentation like privacy policies, partnership agreements and terms and conditions. Ingrid clears away the fog and fear that comes with the legalities of growing a business and puts it all into plain English.

In this episode Ingrid and I are chatting about what you can do if your work gets copied and, better still, what you can do to prevent it getting copied. Whether that’s having copy or images taken from your website, another small business copying your work or having one of your designs copied by a big retailer. Ingrid takes us through all of the options for dealing with having your work copied and advises on what you can do to prevent that happening in the first place.

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week here in the UK (at the time this podcast goes out - 13th - 19th May 2019) and in honour of that this week’s episode is all about building a business alongside managing depression. My guest for this episode is digital marketing coach and retreat host extraordinaire, Alice Benham.

Alice has experienced what it’s like to go from working all hours and growing a hugely successful business to starting again and growing a business that’s more sustainable and offers much more of a balance between work and life. The catalyst for that change was her struggle with depression, which triggered a 6 month break and an opportunity to re-evaluate the sort of lifestyle and business Alice wanted, and needed to build in order to foster positive mental health. In this episode Alice honestly shares her experience with depression and how she manages her mental health alongside growing a business. Episode 33 - A first for On The Make, I’ve got two guests on the line this week to talk about where to start with figuring out who your target audience are and how to speak to them. This is something that can seem really daunting when you’re just starting out or launching a product to a new audience group but it really doesn't need to be a painful process, as Helen and Lauren explain in this episode.

Knowing and understanding you audience is one of the foundation building blocks in building a business, and once you’ve nailed it, it makes everything easier, from deciding what to talk about on social media, deciding what product to launch next or deciding which magazines or blogs you want you business to appear in.

Gabrielle knows what it’s like to be an over thinker with it having held her back in the past. She shares lots of actionable ways to tackle your overthinking and foster more positive self talk in this episode.

As this episode is coming out around Christmas it seemed a great time to share a bit of family history with you. In this episode I’m chatting with my grandma, who is now 91 but she spent her early years growing up in Shanghai and later in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. She shares her story of growing up in Shanghai and being in the prisoner of war camp, which is a real insight into a totally different time.

This conversation also served as a healthy reminder for me of how grateful I am to not have had to grow up in a time that was affected by war or lack of food where I live. The other thing I feel grateful for, having listened to my Grandma’s story is my freedom. The freedom to make things happen like growing my business and carving out ways to live life on my own terms, which is something I’ll always be grateful for.

You may have come across Kate on instagram as Grace and Flora, that’s where I started following her and her business quite a few years ago now. I love her natural, rustic style and beautiful floral flat lays which incorporate her beautiful nature-inspired jewellery.

A while ago Kate blogged about her take on planning for creative business and she brought up some really interesting points around planning in tune with your own seasons and reflecting on your achievements so I had to get her on the podcast to talk a little more about this. You might not know that Kate is also a therapist so we also chatted about how she juggles her two businesses alongside being a mum and very importantly, a dog owner.

In this episode I share my 3-step planning method that I've developed over the years of having a side-hustle to create realistic and achievable acton plans for my business.

I used to make one big plan for my side-hustle at the beginning of each year. I’d start the year with all guns blazing and then realise as I got to April that my plan had been wildly overoptimistic and I was lagging behind leaving me feeling disheartened. I also couldn’t predict what was going to change over the period of 12 months and so planning annually wasn’t serving me. So I tried out planning in 12 week chunks and found it to be a real game changer for my business. So, in this episode I’m sharing the 3-step planning method that I use to plan for my side-hustle so that you can also make your own action plan too.

A while ago at a creative business event I went along to, called Creatival I listened to Leona Thfirt-Ola talking about what she’d learned from her super inspiring business journey. She said something that I’ve never heard anyone say before in a business context. To paraphrase, she said: don’t beat yourself up for not being consistent, you’re a human not a robot.

This completely changed my mindset around consistency and lifted a huge pressure off my shoulders that I’d been putting on myself. But having said that, I really do believe that consistency is important for growing a creative business. After some pondering I realised it is possible to be consistent without being a robot by using the 4 tools that I talk through in this episode of On The Make.
