In episode 99, we dive into the urgent topic of climate change and the upcoming COP28 summit, an essential meeting that will significantly influence global environmental policies. In this episode, we talked to Professor Ryan Gregory who is an evolutionary biologist and genome biologist at the University of Guelph. We talked about evolutionary biology and, most specifically, his primary research focus which is genome evolution.
We discussed how similar the stigmatization regarding Monkeypox is to the earlier reporting on HIV/AIDS and how dangerous that sort of discourse can be. We also talked about the different responses to the pandemic by governments and whether herd immunity was ever a plausible solution. Finally, We touched on the subject of biases in decision-making regarding COVID-19 and other viral outbreaks.

In this episode, we talk to the President of Concerned Friends Laurie Nicol. Concerned Friends is a volunteer-run organization whose mission is to advance the health and well-being and enrich the experiences of those living in long-term care homes across Ontario.
We discussed what the process of choosing a long-term care facility looks like; the differences between privately owned, publicly owned and non-profit/charity-owned long-term care facilities.
We talked about the structural issues that were unearthed by Covid-19 in long-term care facilities. Finally, we touched on what the solutions might look like such as implementing a minimum of 4-hours of hands-on care per day or investing in recruiting more staff.

Jamal has worked closely with Masai Ujiri, the president of basketball operations of the Toronto Raptors, as well as with major brands such as Slam, Nike, and Jordan. We discussed his experience growing up in Regent Park and the complexities of navigating the world as a bi-racial man. We touched on what motivated him to go into photography and the opportunities that propelled his career. Furthermore, we discussed what inspired him to start, along with his close friends, a youth-led organization The Kickback (@kickbackconnect).
The organization began with a Toronto-area shoe drive in the summer of 2017. Since then, The Kickback has hosted basketball tournaments in New York, Sneaker Week seminars in Portland, and countless other community events. The Kickback has donated over 6000 pairs of sneakers tied to specific programming for youth globally.
