Jim Coyle, now a semi-retired college professor in Ohio, started producing and hosting podcasts in March, 2005. Through The Endless Road Podcast, Jim shares with and about some of the people and events we encounter in life, and occasionally music he's found - slightly off the beaten path. And sprinkled throughout are episodes by and about some of Jim's students learning to ... Podcast.

The Plan was to record and publish this new episode on International Podcast Day 2021 - September 30. But a situation came up that had to be addressed that day. Nighttime brought a chance to record part of this episode before Midnight local time. Looking at the clock I see it's still September 30 on the United States West Coast, so I still have time to publish this International Podcast Day 2021 episode on the day itself. Enjoy our first episode in 7 years! We'll be back soon, really.
The Endless Road Podcast went on sabbatical 7 years ago. It now appears that we misunderstood the 7 years aspect of a sabbatical and have taken a 7-year break from producing new episodes.
Someone suggested we read the definition of "sabbatical" more closely. Surprise! It turns out that a typical sabbatical can be taken after working for 7 years, but it only lasts for 1 year or less. Oops.
So we're dusting off the recording equipment and getting ready for our next episode of The Endless Road Podcast. I haven't been out to the garage to see if our good old car starts up after 7 years, but one way or another, we'll be back on The Endless Road real soon.

Production note: This episode was recorded to demonstrate recording with AGC (Automatic Gain Control) turned on. I hope you'll hear why it's not a good idea to use AGC when recording.
When AGC is turned off, the recording app Bossjock Studio is an excellent recording tool. I frequently use it with my iPhone.

Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast U.S. a few days before Franciscan University's Fall Break, affecting many students' travel plans. Today we're following up with Lana who, in our last episode, was waiting to hear about a new flight home. Things turned out differently than she expected. (3:58)
Personal Note: Recovery from Hurrican Sandy will be a long and emotional process for many people in the Northeast. Our prayers go out to them, and I encourage everyone to help in some way, sharing their time, talents and/or treasure to help people rebuild.

As with all types of media, digital technology continues to have a huge impact on the book publishing industry. The Endless Road Podcast visited a Mass Media class at Franciscan University of Steubenville to find out what students had to share about today's book industry. Communication Arts Department at Franciscan University of Steubenville
Maps can keep us from getting lost - and help us find ourselves when we do get lost. Lots of us have moved on from paper maps to digital maps, first on computers and now on mobile devices. Apple shook up iPhone and iPad Maps last week by replacing Google Maps with a new Apple Maps app - and reaction was fast and furious. Here's the Endless Road's take on maps.

Traveling often brings unexpected events. Today we hear about two road trips that didn't go as expected.
Words have such power when used by a gifted writer. A friend's comment on FaceBook today got me thinking about another one of my favorite writers, Anne Lamott, and the way she tells her stories through writing. Specifically, one passage from her book Traveling Mercies came to mind, one that I share here. (7:26, 6.8 MB)
Family dinners are such an important part of many people's lives, and memories of these times last a lifetime. As I get ready to visit my brother and sisters this week, I've been thinking about Thanksgiving dinners as we were growing up - and the special joy that's come at the occasional dinners we've enjoyed as a family since then. A couple of weeks ago, Fr. Lou Molinelli shared about Sunday dinners in his home and the joy of family. It's a great story in this edition of the Endless Road Podcast. (15:46, 10.9 MB)

During Spring Break, 2007, nine Communication Arts students and I - all from Franciscan University of Steubenville - drove to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans on a "media mission" to create stories about recovery progress a year and a half after Hurricane Katrina devastated these areas. Two weeks after our trip I produced this podcast with some initial impressions of the experience. While I published the program on another podcast series as a class demo, it looks as if I didn't post if here on the Endless Road Podcast site.
