As the weather is getting colder and colder in France, I was thinking of that funny expression: un froid de canard. Literally, a cold of duck, a duck's cold. un froid de canard means that it's freezing cold. I think the expression comes from hunting ducks in the fall, when hunters stand in freezing waters for extended periods of time and they get frozen to the bones. un froid de canard, as many weather expressions, uses FAIRE, an irregular verb.
- " Moi, j'reste pas là à m'geler dans la voiture, t'es malade. Il fait un froid de canard."
- "I'm not gonna stay here and freeze, you're nuts. It's freezing cold."

Going to the Cannes Film Festival – Today’s Advanced French Part of Theme Courses| Le Festival de Cannes
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about movies in French.
France has to go to the Cannes movie Festival, in the South of France to interview a movie director. She is taking advantage of a long weekend. Elle fait le pont “She makes the bridge”. She uses a lot of colloquial expressions in French that you can use later.
France veut aller au Festival de Cannes, dans le sud de la France, pour interviewer un réalisateur. Elle profite du long week-end. Elle fait le pont. Elle parle français avec de nombreuses expressions idiomatiques dont vous pourrez vous servir plus tard.
Texte – Aller au Festival de Cannes
Ouais, c’est chouette ! On fait le pont pour la troisième fois ce mois-ci. Le mois de mai est [n’est] pas trop dégueu. On se tire dans le sud. Les gamins, on les laisse chez Papy et Mamie en banlieue. J’ai fait leurs valises hier soir. J’ai pu [je n’ai plus] qu’à faire les nôtres.
On roule pendant 7 heures sur l’autoroute du soleil, et on est à Aix-en-Provence. Ensuite, on roule encore une petite heure et on est à Cannes, à l’aube, juste à temps pour le p’tit déje. J’ai rencard avec un jeune réalisateur sur La Croisette. Il vient de faire un docu gastronomique sur les crêpes à travers le monde. T’imagines ! Lui, il cherche à le distribuer et moi, je vais lui écrire un article pour le canard Ouest-France. Après l’entretien, on est invité à la grande soirée bling-bling. Y’aura des paillettes et du glamour.

faire son cinéma – to do one’s movies. In everyday French, faire son cinéma means to be dramatic, to be over the top about something, to draw the attention onto oneself, to be a ham, to ham it up. There is another word that means the same thing. It’s cabotiner. I love cabotiner. It feels like it’s coming from old times, and as a result, it’s not very used any more. However, faire son cinéma is.
- « Je vais pas lui demander car elle va encore faire son cinéma, comme d’hab. »
- “I’m not going to ask her as she’s going to go over the top, as usual.”

BOREDOM or BORED Part of Learning Activities | French Headaches
ENNUI and S’ENNUYER have many variants and many meanings in French. We’ll untangle the main uses here. The exercise at the end of the lesson will help you sort it out.
One thing to remember: the French prefer to use the verb rather than the adjective. They prefer saying : « Le film m’ennuie. » rather than « Le film est ennuyeux. »
- ennuyer quelqu’un …. to bore someone, to upset, to annoy, to bother someone
- s’ennuyer, s’emmerder (familiar) …. to be/get/become bored
- ennuyeux, ennuyeuse …. boring, annoying, troublesome
- être ennuyé.e …. to be uncomfortable, in a pickle
- un ennui, l’ennui …. a problem, boredom
- avoir des ennuis …. to be in trouble
Exercice – Practice – Choose your Challenge Print and translate the sentences from one language to the other. French to English (la version) is easier. English to French (la thèse) a bit more challenging.

by Victor Hugo Dans son roman « Notre-Dame de Paris », publié en 1831, Victor Hugo décrivait l’incendie du célèbre monument.
« Tous les yeux s’étaient levés vers le haut de l’église. Ce qu’ils voyaient était extraordinaire. Sur le sommet de la galerie la plus élevée, plus haut que la rosace centrale, il y avait une grande flamme qui montait entre les deux clochers avec des tourbillons d’étincelles, une grande flamme désordonnée et furieuse dont le vent emportait par moments un lambeau dans la fumée. Au-dessous de cette flamme, au-dessous de la sombre balustrade à trèfles de braise, deux gouttières en gueules de monstres vomissaient sans relâche cette pluie ardente qui détachait son ruissellement argenté sur les ténèbres de la façade inférieure. À mesure qu’ils approchaient du sol, les deux jets de plomb liquide s’élargissaient en gerbes, comme l’eau qui jaillit des mille trous de l’arrosoir. Au-dessus de la flamme, les énormes tours, de chacune desquelles on voyait deux faces crues et tranchées, l’une toute noire, l’autre toute rouge, semblaient plus grandes encore de toute l’immensité de l’ombre qu’elles projetaient jusque dans le ciel. Leurs innombrables sculptures de diables et de dragons prenaient un aspect lugubre. La clarté inquiète de la flamme les faisait remuer à l’œil. Il y avait des guivres qui avaient l’air de rire, des gargouilles qu’on croyait entendre japper, des salamandres qui soufflaient dans le feu, des tarasques qui éternuaient dans la fumée. Et parmi ces monstres ainsi réveillés de leur sommeil de pierre par cette flamme, par ce bruit, il y en avait un qui marchait et qu’on voyait de temps en temps passer sur le front ardent du bûcher comme une chauve-souris devant une chandelle. »

All eyes had risen to the top of the church. What they were seeing was extraordinary. On top of the highest gallery, higher than the central rose window, there was a great flame rising between the two steeples with whirlwinds of sparks, a large, disordered and furious flame whose wind occasionally carried off a shred in the smoke. Beneath this flame, beneath the dark balustrade of ember-clover, two monsters-like gutters were vomiting relentlessly the fiery rain that loosened its silver runoff over the darkness of the lower facade.
As they approached the ground, the two streams of liquid lead expanded in sheaves, like the water that springs from the thousand holes of the watering can. Above the flame, the enormous towers, each of which showed two raw and unequivocal faces, one of them totally black, the other entirely red, seemed to be yet larger with all the immensity of the shade they projected into the sky.
Their innumerable sculptures of devils and dragons took on a lugubrious aspect. The uneasy light from the flame made their eyes follow the passersby. There were wyverns that seemed to laugh, gargoyles that were thought to be barking, salamanders blowing in the fire, tarasques sneezing in the smoke. And among these monsters, thus awakened from their stone sleep by this flame, by this noise; there was one who was walking and who was seen from time to time passing on the burning front of the pyre, like a bat in front of a candle.

What does the French expression ‘ fumer la moquette ’ mean? How is it used in a sentence? fumer la moquette - to smoke the carpeting. fumer la moquette means two things. First, it means to smoke pot. I'm not sure where that comes from. Is it because you're ready to smoke carpeting if you don't have pot anymore, or is it that carpeting looks like grass?
Anyway, this expression is fairly new. Its second meaning, gaining popularity, is that someone is out of it, delusional.
- « Ils disent que leur retraite va leur payer un appart sur l'Île Saint Louis. Ils ont fumé la moquette. »
- "They say their retirement plan is going to get them a condo on the Île Saint Louis (in Paris). They're delusional."

Voilà un domaine que je connais bien mal. Pourtant, on entend ce vocabulaire assez souvent. Les copains d’abord – Chanson française Part of Learn French with Pop Songs
“Buddies First” is a must-know song in French culture. It was very famous in the 60s and 70s. I was raised singing it.
Georges Brassens wrote it for a movie called “Les Copains”.
It’s an allegory that represents friendship.
That of a confident and solid ship that you can count on. This group of friends is very tight. They support each other. They steadily drift through life in spite of the storms that life throws at them.
« Les copains d’abord » est une incontournable de la culture française. C’est une chanson très célèbre dans les années 60 et 70. Je l’ai chantée durant toute mon enfance.
Georges Brassens l’a écrite pour un film « Les Copains ».
C’est une allégorie et qui représente l’amitié ; celle d’un bateau confiant et solide sur lequel on peut compter. Ce groupe d’amis est très soudé. Ils se soutiennent les uns les autres. Ils voguent fermement à travers la vie en dépit des tempêtes.

Using the subjunctive is tricky. I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Sometimes, the same verb triggers the subjunctive mode. Or it doesn’t, depending if it’s affirmative, negative or a question.
For instance, « il croit que » doesn’t trigger the subjunctive, but « il ne croit pas que » and « Croit-il que » tend to. If you need a bit of practice on this topic, this quiz if for you GO TO THE LESSON

Fall is here and it’s time to put the garden tools away. Putting them away will help keep them longer.
This video is very useful for our French, although it is an advertisement. However, it is very long for our purpose. I suggest you study it in 2 different segments.
Outils de Jardin
C’est l’automne et il est temps de ranger les outils de jardin. Il faut les mettre à l’abri pour les conserver plus longtemps.
Cette vidéo est très utile pour notre français, bien que ce soit une publicité. Toutefois, elle est très longue pour nous. Mon tuyau : faites-la en deux fois.

Français Ça y est, c’est la fin de saison. La fin de saison du jardinage, c’est le moment de ranger tous ses outils. Il va falloir les stocker à l’intérieur, dans un garage ou dans un atelier. Sachez une chose : il ne faut jamais les laisser en plein soleil, à la pluie ou aux intempéries de l’hiver.
Après chaque utilisation, il faut surtout bien nettoyer vous outils dans l’eau ; et pour ça, vous utilisez un balai – pourquoi pas ? – ou une éponge. C’est vrai aussi pour les autres outils comme la binette, la fourche-bêche aussi.
Voilà ! Maintenant, on va la laisser s’essuyer [sécher] un tout petit peu et on va la chiffonner après ça, pour bien la faire sécher.
Donc, on a chiffonné aussi, bien essuyé notre fourche-bêche. Alors là, on constate quelque chose : c’est qu’y a un tout petit peu de taches de rouille sur les pointes. Donc, on va éliminer cette rouille. Alors, pour ça on peut utiliser une brosse métallique, mais la brosse métallique a un petit peu la, la fâcheuse manie de rayer. Pour ça, je préfère utiliser de la laine de verre. Et on va frotter la rouille délicatement avec notre laine de verre ; et là on constate que la rouille est [a] disparu.
Puisqu’on range notre outil, on va vérifier si tout est en bonne marche ; si y a pas des zones d’usure, si la lame est toujours bien affûtée. Si elle est mal affûtée, on va pouvoir lui passer un petit coup de lime.
En général, on change un manche en bois s’il est fissuré ou fendu. Exemple [d’un outil qui peut être fissuré ou fendu] d’une bêche ou [d’] une fourche-bêche sur lesquelles on applique une pression lors du bêchage.
Le bois est un matériau naturel. L’humidité relative de l’air – ou le degré d’hygrométrie – peut varier et influencer l’état du bois ; et donc, la fixation du manche et du fer de l’outil peut en souffrir.
Si vous êtes obligé.e de changer le manche en bois de votre outil, sachez que le bois est un être vivant et qu’il faut bien le maintenir le long de la douille.
Pour ça, vous prenez un marteau.
[Le jardinier tape 2 coups sur son outil avec un marteau]
Vous le tapez légèrement et vous le faites tremper pendant 24 heures dans l’eau, de façon [à ce] que le manche gonfle dans la douille.
Les outils à manches en bois Fiskars-Leborgne sont issus de la partie noble du bois. Le vernis incolore posé sur le manche va vous permettre d’éviter de ramasser des échardes au moment où vous allez tenir votre manche. De plus, le vernis permettra de tenir votre manche plus longtemps contre la pourriture.
Les manches en fibre Fiskars-Leborgne ne sont pas sensibles au degré d’hygrométrie. Ils seront toujours fixés de façon sûre sur le fer de l’outil. Les manches en fibre sont robustes et quasi incassables.
Maintenant que nos outils sont bien affûtés et nettoyés, on va les ranger sur un râtelier ; toujours bien au sec, pour les retrouver en bon état au moment où vous en aurez besoin.

After each use, it is especially important to clean your tools in water; and for that you use a broom – why not? – or a sponge. This is also true for other tools like a hoe, or a spade-fork.
So! Now let’s wipe it a little bit and use a rag to dry so it’s completely dry.
So, we also wiped-dry, wiped our spade-fork well. And here we see something: it is that there is a tiny bit of rust spots on the tips. So, we are going to eliminate this rust. So, for that we can use a wire brush, but the wire brush has a little bit the, the annoying habit of scratching. For this, I prefer to use steel-wool. And we will gently rub the rust with our steel-wool; and there we see that the rust is [has] disappeared.
Since we’re putting our tool away, we will check if everything is working well; if there are any wear-and-tear spots, if the blade is still nicely sharpened. If it’s not, we can give it a filing.
Generally, we change a wooden handle if it is cracked or split. Example [of a tool that may crack or split] of a spade or [of] a fork-spade to which pressure is applied during the digging.
Wood is a natural material. The relative humidity of the air – or the degree of humidity – can vary and influence the condition of the wood; and therefore, the attachment of the handle and the tool iron may suffer from that humidity.
If you are forced to change the wooden handle of your tool, remember that wood is a living being and that it must be well attached along the socket.
For that, you take a hammer.

You tap it lightly and soak it for 24 hours in water, so that the handle swells in the socket.
Fiskars-Leborgne wooden handle tools come from the noble part of wood. The colorless varnish placed on the handle will allow you to avoid picking up splinters when you are going to hold your sleeve. In addition, the varnish will hold your sleeve longer against rot.
Fiskars-Leborgne fiber sleeves are not sensitive to humidity. They will always be securely attached to the tool iron. The fiber handles are robust and almost unbreakable.
Now that our tools are well sharpened and cleaned, we will put them away on a rack; always dry, to find them in good condition when you need them.

Faites cette recette la veille. Quand on la réchauffe, elle semble bien meilleure.
Quand il fait chaud dehors, je sers la ratatouille en tarte chaude ou froide. Je prends un fond de tarte. Ma pâte préférée est la pâte feuilletée, mais tout fond de tarte marche. Précuisez le fond et étalez la ratatouille dessus. Enfournez pendant une vingtaine de minutes à four chaud ou dégustez froid.
La recette est très facile à faire, même si elle paraît longue. Bon appétit !

Ingrédients – les quantités sont approximatives. Changez-les selon vos goûts.

- 4 tomates ou plus
- une pincée de sel
- une pincée de poivre
- une pincée d’herbes de Provence
Recette
Allumez la gazinière à feu fort.
Versez de l’huile d’olive dans le fond de la sauteuse.
Épluchez les gousses d’ail, les oignons, les aubergines, découpez-les et mettez-les dans la sauteuse. Faites sauter en mélangeant.
Lavez et épluchez les poivrons, enlevez ses pépins, découpez-les et mettez-les dans la sauteuse. Faites sauter en mélangeant.
Lavez et épluchez les courgettes, découpez-les et mettez-les dans la sauteuse. Faites sauter en mélangeant.
Lavez les tomates, enlevez ses pépins, découpez-les et mettez-les dans la sauteuse. Faites sauter en mélangeant.
Faites cuire pendant une demi-heure à feu moyen, en mélangeant de temps en temps.
Retirez du feu. Dégustez tout de suite ou laissez refroidir et mettez dans un Tupperware et au frigo. Réchauffez avant de manger. Plus la ratatouille est refroidie puis réchauffée, meilleure elle est.
Variante : si vous désirez une ratatouille plus onctueuse, blanchissez les tomates, enlevez la peau et ajoutez-les alors à la sauteuse.

Make this dish the day before. When you heat it, it tastes so much better.
When it’s hot outside, I serve the ratatouille as a pie, hot or cold. I take a pie shell. My favorite is puff pastry, but any pie shell works. Precook the pie shell and spread the ratatouille over it. Bake for about twenty minutes in a hot oven or enjoy cold.
The recipe is very easy to make, even if it seems long. Enjoy your meal!

Utensils
- a vegetable peeler
- a knife that cuts well
- a salad bowl
- a towel
- a flexible cutting board
- a huge sauté (frying) pan or a deep skillet, or a tall saucepan
- a large wooden spoon
- a stove
- paper-towel
- a large Tupperware
Ingredients – quantities are approximate. Change them according to your taste.
- olive oil
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 2 onions
- 3 eggplants
- 1 red pepper
- 1 green pepper
- 1 orange pepper
- 4 zucchinis
- 4 or more tomatoes
- a pinch of salt
- a pinch of pepper
- a pinch of Provence herbs
Recipe
Light the stove on high heat.
Pour olive oil into the bottom of the pan.
Peel the cloves of garlic, onions, eggplant, dice them up and put them in the sauté pan. Sauté while mixing.
Wash and peel the peppers, remove the seeds, dice them up and put them in the sauté pan. Sauté while mixing.
Wash and peel the zucchinis, dice them up and put them in the sauté pan. Sauté while mixing.
Wash the tomatoes, remove the seeds, dice them up and put them in the sauté pan. Sauté while mixing.
Cook for half an hour over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
Remove from the heat. Eat right away or let cool and put in a Tupperware and in the fridge. Reheat before eating. The more the ratatouille is cooled and then reheated, the better.
Variation: if you want a creamier ratatouille, blanch the tomatoes, remove the skin and then add them to the sauté pan.

Some say that chloroquine a miracle cure for Covid-19. Others say that saying this is exactly what’s slowing down research. Who is right?
Professor Raoult, a specialist in infectious diseases, says that chloroquine can cure coronavirus. Some stars also claim that we can get cured thanks to coronavirus. Consequently, patients insist on receiving only that drug, marketed under the name of Plaquénil. Researchers therefore cannot run effective tests..

Certains disent que la chloroquine est le remède miracle contre le Covid-19. D’autres disent que c’est ça qui empêche la recherche d’avancer. Qui a raison ?
Le professeur Raoult, spécialiste des maladies infectieuses, affirme que la chloroquine peut guérir du coronavirus. Certaines stars affirment également c’est grâce au coronavirus qu’on peut guérir. En conséquence, les malades insistent pour ne recevoir que ce médicament, commercialisé sous le nom de Plaquénil. Les chercheurs ne peuvent donc pas faire des tests efficaces.

La polémique sur la chloroquine a notamment un impact, aujourd’hui, sur les études de traitement en cours menées à grande échelle » confirme le professeur François Bricaire, chef du service des maladies infectieuses à la Pitié-Salpêtrière.
« Dans l’essai important qu’on voudrait mettre en place, les malades veulent absolument recevoir de la chloroquine et ne pas être dans les bras qui comportent d’autres propositions thérapeutiques. »
Des essais qui s’en trouveraient donc ralentis, une des conséquences concrètes des réactions de tous bords qui s’enthousiasment pour la chloroquine.
Selon le néphrologue Gilbert Deray, qui lui, se montre réservé sur ce traitement.
[Gilbert Deray dit :]
« Toute cette situation me met euh, très en colère. Nous assistons euh, à des prises de parole de personnalités du monde des médias, du monde de euh, du sport (qui) nous expliquent ‘ce qu’il faut faire sur le plan thérapeutique’ et, et ces personnes ne se rendent pas compte de l’impact considérable qu’elles ont ; et par ailleurs, elles ne se rendent pas compte non plus que ce qu’elles disent est malheureusement euh, souvent complètement stupide. »
Une partie du corps médical appelle donc à la patience et à la modération, en attendant plus de certitude sur le traitement à base de chloroquine.

The chloroquine controversy has an impact particularly today on the studies underway on a large scale ” confirms Professor François Bricaire, head of the infectious diseases department at La Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital.
“In the important trial that we would like to set up, the patients want to get nothing but chloroquine. They don’t want to be in the trials which include other therapeutic proposals, other medications.”
Tests which would be slowed down as a consequence, one of the concrete consequences of reactions from all sides who are enthusiastic about chloroquine.

“This whole situation makes me er, very angry. We are witnessing uh, media or er, sports stars (who are) explaining to us [doctors] ‘what to do therapeutically’ and, and these people don’t realize the considerable impact they have; and moreover, they don’t realize either that what they say is unfortunately uh, often completely stupid.”
A part of the medical profession therefore calls for patience and moderation, while waiting for more certainty on treatment with chloroquine.

Covid-19 has created a tragic situation and I want to reiterate how much we’re grateful to all who are going to work despite the crisis. My thoughts are also with those who lost loved ones. I was listening to the radio yesterday, and the journalist was talking about this new words in French, due to coronavirus. With the coronavirus lockdown, every day seems like it’s Sunday. The French renamed all the days of the week with a portmanteau word – un mot-valise. They blended the last syllable of the day – DI – and added dimanche to it.
It goes as follows:
- lundimanche
- mardimanche
- mercredimanche
- jeudimanche
- vendredimanche
- samedimanche
- dimanche
Of course, there is no translation for these fun words. I’m hesitating between MondaySunday, TuesdaySunday, MonSunday, TuesSunday or SundayMon, SundayTues… Or maybe just Day: today is Day.
- « J’ai envie de vous voir. On se fait un coronapéro lundimanche ou mardimanche ? »
- ‘I’d love to see you guys. How about a video-cocktail on MonSunday or TueSunday?’
