Guided by the mystical insights of Sharlyn Hidalgo's book, "The Healing Power of Trees," we venture forth into a monthly enchantment, each time entwined with a different tree steeped in the tapestry of Celtic lore. Embracing the ancient spiritual rites of the British Isles, we dance in harmony with the sacred rhythms of nature, acknowledging our connection and place within its grand design. Through communion with the earth's ancient wisdom and the whispered secrets of each arboreal guardian, we weave with our breath, inhaling deeply the essence of their mystical teachings.

Breath Break! Breath of Fire

Today we are going to be exploring a breathing technique called breath of fire or kapalabhati.

The mechanics of the breathing technique creates energy and a sense of heat if you like, a sense of fire and motion in the body.

It cleanses and it clears which is very

symbolic to the element of fire.

I sometimes like to deconstruct techniques by bringing in

some other aspects to it, self inquiry and/or the practice of observing your sensations, which is called

felt sense. Also to have moments of slowing down so you can really check in and feel what's going on for you and how this breathing

technique makes you feel.

I would like to acknowledge

the roots of what is a very traditional Pranayama practice.

A practice that has travelled through time, hundreds of years maybe much more, it has not only crossed countries but crossed

cultures and i feel it’s important to honour the roots of where this practice derived from.

In India the Sanskrit name for this practice is Kapalabhati which translates,

kapal, meaning "skull" and bhati, meaning “to shine.”

How does your skull shine or illuminate when doing this?

Lets begin!

Today's breath pattern is inspired by Rosemary. 🌿

Rosemary has been used for hundreds of years for many many uses. I mainly use it in tea or to make smudge sticks. A fresh stig in a gin and tonic also tastes delicious! 🍸  I’ve even made a pillow spray because I just love the smell.

It's said that Rosemary aids in memory and learning. In honour of this clearing and clarifying herb, we will be doing a breath pattern, which you might know as alternate nostril breathing, which helps to rebalance not only our nervous system but the right and left hemispheres of our brains. 🧠

Because in order to remember and feel clarity around the important things in life we must first declutter, rebalance and create the space. 💟

Hope you enjoy this moment to breathe. Let us know how you got on!

This week the Stingy Nettle has taken centre stage, invoking metaphors and self-enquiry around the more prickly parts of ourselves and the nutrients that lie under them.

The Stingy Nettle has developed some spikey protective mechanisms to deter getting eaten.

On a metaphoric level, People do the same!

Many of our protective mechanisms were formed as children and as adults, we are not always conscious of them, they can be overlooked as parts of our personality.

Like the Stingy Nettle we also have abundant gifts to share with the world and when we are in a more loving relationship with ourselves, we may feel safer and more motivated to connect with our gifts, creativity and passion, which in turn, is totally medicinal to the world!

What protective mechanisms are you aware of and how are they part of your character and communication? What creative passions are you wanting to connect to or share more of?

Hope you enjoy this moment to breathe. Let us know how you got on!

Today we are going to explore a symmetrical breathing pattern, breathing in, pausing the breath, breathing out & pausing the breath all for equal lengths of time and repeating the cycle. This is similar to box breathing a well know breathing hack.

Loved talking to Alison about all things Breathwork and Trauma integration.

Alison uses a combination of tools to help individuals overcome their pain and guide them towards self-connection and transformation.

Here we talk about what trauma is, why working with the breath and body is so integral to your emotional freedom and flow. How creativity gets’ forgotten and the need to bring it back into our lives and the importance of our connection with nature and ceremony in our life.

What is Embodied Antiracism?

Hannah Kendaru uses breathwork and embodiment to bring us back into the deep remembrance of what freedom really means. With the currents of a dominant white culture heavily pedalling disconnection, separateness and discrimination as a way of life, and teaching us to become disembodied to tolerate life's atrocities, Hannah uses the breath to remember our bodies, remember their lived experiences and attend to the wisdom that lies within.

I met Hannah Kendaru last year when I joined a small group of people and breathworkers to explore one of the most life-changing books I have ever read called my Grandmothers Hands by Resmaa Menakem, (an American therapist, licensed social worker, police trainer and consultant who specializes in trauma work, addressing conflict, and body-centred healing.)

We wanted to use an embodied approach to experiencing this book and its content, with the idea that if breathwork can support the integration of trauma on an individual, collective or intergenerational basis and is proven to support the creation of new neural pathways and ways of thinking and being in the world, then why couldn't it also be used as a tool to support the transformation of racialised trauma and conditioned belief systems and structures that support division, conflict and suppression?

A year later and my journey on this path is deepening with the absolute knowing that I am only at the beginning!

Hannah has been doing embodied antiracism work for a long time, she might say her whole life. I'm so grateful to be in dialogue with this amazing women and to be able to enter into a space where we can talk and explore the unavoidably messy and uncomfortable terrain of race, with the support of our training in breathwork and somatic enquiry.

Here is the first of many conversations. We decided to call these conversations 'fumbling conversations about race' which felt appropriate and honest in the setting we found ourselves in together.

In this first episode, Hannah introduces the concept and meaning of embodied anti-racism and racialised trauma.

There are some fun characters along the way that help and support the journey.
