Welcome to the first special episode where we discuss the ENTIRETY of Sufjan's 2019 classical piano album The Decalogue. We sure have a lot of NICE things to say about this album! We cover 9 songs in this episode, but we don't go that much into detail because there's simply not a lot to talk about. Rivers then goes insane on the podcast, we actually find a song out of the 9 that we like, Rivers makes fun of someone who said A Sun Came was Sufjan's worst album, then we do our first moth review and have a live discussion on our Discord server! We then do the cursed and dreaded Twitter scrolling segment and end the episode off by asking Reddit for Thanksgiving Sufjan songs. Fun times! See you next time for the Thanksgiving special!
We're back! Again! This episode we discuss a song from Michigan and a song from Aporia, we discuss moths and why they are so great, we discuss how Sufjan should make a song about turkeys, and we lightly talk about Sufjan's new album that he made with Angelo De Augustine. Hopefully we can keep the consistent schedule streak up this time! This episode is sure not to disappoint! I think.
Wow, are we on an actual schedule or something? In this episode, we finally get to discuss Sufjan's newest album at the time of this episodes release, Convocations, and discuss the intro to the album, Meditation I, and discuss how it might represent Sufjan hearing about the death of his father, and go way into detail over a 3 minute long ambient song. Rivers advertises his own ambient album, and accuses Sufjan of stealing his idea, before moving into the next song, Celebration II, where we discuss the build up of the song, before the song abruptly ends with the sound of car engine noises. We also find scams in Sufjan's comment section, talk about Mr. Peanut, have water ASMR, have the first (and only) Enjoy Your Sufjan concert, and more in this terrible episode!
Wow, first episode to be over an hour! In the seventh episode of Enjoy Your Sufjan, we dive into some of Sufjan's more historical songs! Rivers loves history, so this episode was fun for him! We discuss the decline of Detroit and the symbolism of the first song we got from Michigan, and we talk about former UN Ambassador Adlai Stevenson II, his 2 election defeats, and that one time he accidentally shot his friend when he was 12. Also, we go on a lot of tangents about Bob Ross this episode. Better see those Bob Ross essays by episode 8! Hope you enjoy this very long episode!
Episode 6! We talk about Bad Communication from The Age of Adz and another song from The Avalanche! We discuss Bad Communication's not so subtle lyrics, and we also talk about how The Perpetual Self was featured in the trailer for the documentary Babies, and proceeded to talk about that movie for the rest of the episode instead of Sufjan! Fun times! Remember, your homework is to watch Babies! We'll do a watchalong episode eventually. Great episode!
Enjoy Your Sufjan is back, and with it's longest episode yet! We barely talk about Sufjan this episode, but celebrate Halloween which it definitely is and we scroll through twitter and see some things we wish we hadn't! Sorry, didn't have much to talk about this episode considering we got 2 instrumentals. Still a great episode! More to come!
Episode 4 is out, and it's the longest one yet! We discuss two of the least known Sufjan songs, firstly, we talk about the 36-second long interlude from 2020's Aporia, "For Raymond Scott" and go into WAAAAAAAAAAAY too much detail about the song, trying to find a meaning in a 30 second long song that's just beeps and boops. We then discuss "Kill" from 1999's A Sun Came, and we get to hear some interesting takes on the song, from sad and depressing, to happy, to somewhere in the middle. Rivers calls out Sufjan's obsession with horses on the album, and Toby concludes that Sufjan is a furry in what is probably the lowpoint of the podcast so far. Hooray! Kill! Raymond Scott! Furries! Episode 3! We actually get two decent songs this time and we don't get any instrumentals for once! Hooray! We discuss "America" from 2020's The Ascension but can't go much into detail about it due to its political nature. We also discuss "I Want To Be Well" from 2010's The Age of Adz and Rivers goes way into detail during his analysis on the song. Other than that, we discuss a certain post on Sufjan's Tumblr, Toby shares their drawing of Rivers, Toby almost dies while drinking a juice box, and more in what is without a doubt the most chaotic episode of the podcast yet!
Episode 2 is here, and we actually give some decent lyrical analysis this time! We listen to the instrumental interlude "Kuiper Belt" from 2017's Planetarium, and find out that Toby can't figure out how to pronounce "Kuiper". We also listen to the heartbreaking song "Dumb I Sound" from 1999's A Sun Came, and give some lyrical analysis that we will probably never top, and give some architecture homework. A tale of heartbreak and denial, love and hatred, fireflies and Egypt, the first episode of Enjoy Your Sufjan is almost certain to disappoint. Hopefully episodes after this one won't be as bad as whatever this episode is supposed to be.
