the air in vancouver hits different. iunno why, it's just different. Anyway, here's a mix of tunes I haven't had a chance to play out in Montreal. Recorded live from CiTR studios on unceded musqueam territory, aka vancouver.
Since moving to montreal, my life has changed pretty drastically. And with that change, as with any, old routines are discarded and new ones created. It's a gratifying process, one which allows you to re-evaluate why exactly you do the things you do. Recently, over the christmas holidays, I got a waterproof bluetooth speaker that I've been using a lot more than I expected. One of those uses is to bring it in the shower with me, something I never anticipated but have grown to truly love. It's an environment with new musical possibilities, and yet is so narrowly specific in mood. And so, for my first episode of copy/paste in my new home, I bring to you music for showers.

I found this episode while digging through the archives of copy/paste, deep down in the lower radio frequencies. It was recorded, but never got added to the podcast and just languished in the cold metal plates of CiTR's hard disks... until now. It's allergy season, but this time spring comes with a new compilation by Allergy Season the label, and the Discwoman collective. Yes, we've been blessed with Physically Sick 2, a 44-track follow up to last year's Physically Sick comp. I play a bunch of tracks from PS2, as well as a few other new ones that fit the vibe. If you like the tunes, definitely go cop the compilation over at: http://physicallysick2.bandcamp.com . it's pay-what-you-want but all proceeds go to the Brooklyn Community Bail Fund, an organization that bails people out of jail that are victims of discrimination in policing. kick them a few bucks!

New party-series-turned-music-collective Beatsolow are getting ready to drop their debut release, a compilation of tracks by the three producer-housemates. Time for a guest mix! Konstantin and Shehaq show up for a b2b mix that's less b2b and more dual operators on the decks. Impressive stuff. episode 150! a minor achievement, to be sure. I had a real high energy set lined up to really bring home that sesquicentennial feeling, but honestly it was a long day, and I just wasn't feeling up to it. It didn't feel right, and if there's one thing I've learned over the past 150 episodes, it's that you really do have to trust the feeling. Forcing the sound, forcing the mix, forcing your mind really come through, you can hear it! And listeners, you deserve better than that. So instead, with 45 minutes to showtime, I scrapped the whole setlist and instead came up with this: a suitably intimate, low key mix that will snuggle up to your mind and warm your soul. the way only copy/paste does. enjoy.

I been eying this one Paul Johnson record on discogs for months, waiting to pull the trigger, but never quite getting there. this past wknd, deep in a crate at a record fair across the city, my patience (frugality?) is rewarded with a copy calling out my name. it's track 1 in this (almost) entirely vinyl mix, hope you like it as much as I do.

This week I took a break from DJing to work on a live improvised music performance for CiTR's annual Radio Art day, which happened on January 17th. This episode of copy/paste is a recording of that in-studio radio art performance, called Faraday Fantasies. I use my own field recordings from locations where radio waves are not found, not able to penetrate, to generate soundscapes and inspire music creation on the fly. Best to just zone out to this one...
I take a diversion from the dance music sounds you typically hear out here, and play music for sitting on a bench alone. Sad songs ripe for introspection. Use wisely.

it's been a tough week in the dance music world. We all feel for the friends and families that lost their loved ones in the Oakland fire that claimed 33 lives last Friday. It is especially important to reflect on the situation in which this occurred; that is, in an underground artist space, not unlike many of the venues and work spaces that are scattered around every major city in North America. In Oakland specifically, the mayor has launched a $1.7M fund to create artists spaces that are not only socially safe, but structurally safe as well. This is a huge step forward and I truly hope every city with a thriving underground culture does something similar. Vancouver has started this process already, but could certainly stand to expand its program.
This week on copy/paste, to honour the legacy of the artists we lost in the fire, I play my favourite tracks from them to start the show, and move the mix into some real mood supporting music to round out the mix. This is music for remembrance.

in music production, proper use of saturation can make a good track great. but if you love that dirty lo-fi sound like me, there's no such thing as too much. here's a mix of tuff trax that turn that saturation up to 11. lots of brand new stuff too. careful with your ears.

Lnrdcroy just released a new 12" on Mood Hut, centered around aesthetics of vancouver. Also this past week, CiTR homebodies Jonathan Kew (of Kew It Up) and Josh Gabert-Doyon published a great analysis of vancouver's culture problem in the mainlander. They're unrelated, but related, for this episode of copy/paste. A house-driven sarcastic salute to ooze city.
This week I'm thinking of things that arrive in a flurry but linger for much longer. Long tails. Why? Well, mostly that's how this cold seems to be going. But it's something that pops up all over your life if you keep your eyes peeled. Asymmetric frequency over time. This mix is pretty much that, in techno form. Don't fight it, let it linger. It's probably still there for a reason.
Last week was wild. Things went wrong all over the studio. It was not pretty. But perhaps fortuitously, the podcast didn't package properly either, so there's not much record of that night happening at all. Did it? No idea. Today was a really washed out day, perfect for a mix of classic sounding disco and house. Anyone who's browsed my music library has probably noticed that I have a soft spot for disco, so I figured it was high time that I played some of that on the show. This mix starts off with some relaxed washed out disco tunes, then some more funky stuff, and rounds out with some darker hazy sounding house burners.
You can never really tell in Vancouver whether summer has actually arrived, but today felt like maybe it is, so I'm throwing caution to the wind and playing a mix of summer-oriented tunes on episode #25 of copy/paste.
