If you’re a mom who feels like you’re always trying—trying to be more patient, more present, more organized—and yet still end most days feeling like you’re falling short, this episode is for you.

Today on the show, I’m joined by Carla Ondrasik — a former music executive who helped launch hits like “Genie in a Bottle” for Christina Aguilera, worked with icons like Barbra Streisand and NSYNC, and even discovered the songwriter who would later become her husband, John Ondrasik — the voice behind Five for Fighting.

Carla shares powerful insights from her book, Stop Trying: The Life-Transforming Power of Trying Less and Doing More, and explains why “I’ll try” is often just a polite cover for fear, procrastination, and avoidance. She shows how shifting from try to do can change the way we parent, lead, and live—starting with simple changes in how we talk to ourselves and to our kids.

You’ll hear Carla’s own story of moving from behind-the-scenes supporter in the music industry to stepping into the spotlight with a message that helps moms drop the guilt, get honest about what they really want, and take small, doable steps that build confidence.

A few things Carla shares:

  • Why “I’ll try” quietly keeps moms stuck, exhausted, and discouraged
  • How “try” shows up in parenting and what our kids actually hear
  • The difference in your brain between trying and doing
  • Carla’s journey from music executive to author and speaker
  • Simple language shifts that build confidence for you and your kids

If you’re parenting a neurodivergent teen and find yourself quietly wondering about their future friendships, independence, or sense of belonging—this episode is for you.

In today’s conversation, I’m joined by Jamie Pastrano, a licensed social worker, autism advocate, and the co-founder of Synchrony, a groundbreaking social app that officially launched in January 2026.

Jamie’s journey began as a mom raising her son Jesse, who is autistic. Like so many parents of neurodivergent kids, she worked tirelessly to support him through childhood—only to realize that as the teen years approached, one critical question remained unanswered:

How will my child find meaningful connection as an adult?

In this episode, we talk about:

  • The often invisible loneliness many neurodivergent teens and adults experience
  • Common misconceptions about autism, ADHD, and neurodivergence
  • Why traditional social and dating apps often increase anxiety rather than connection
  • How Synchrony is reimagining social connection through interest-based matching, built-in safety, and an AI-powered social coach designed to support confidence, independence, and belonging
  • Why friendship—not dating—is often the foundation neurodivergent adults need first

If you’ve ever thought, I just want my teen to find their people and feel like they belong, you’ll want to listen to this episode.

If you’re a mom lying awake at night, worried about your tween or teen’s anxiety… this episode is for you.

In this deeply meaningful and hope-filled conversation, I’m joined by Amber Leah, author, speaker, and mom, for an honest heart-to-heart about what it’s really like to walk alongside a child who is struggling with anxiety, stress, and depression.

Amber vulnerably shares her family’s story—watching her son Ollie struggle during his preteen and teen years—and the fear, helplessness, and heartbreak that so many moms quietly carry. Together, we talk about the moments no one prepares you for: the emotional outbursts, the pushing away, the shame that follows, and the constant question of “Am I doing this right?”

We also dive into what actually helped:

  • What Amber said (and didn’t say) in the hardest moments
  • How to respond when your teen’s anxiety comes out as anger, withdrawal, or disrespect
  • Why empathy matters more than lectures when emotions are running high
  • How to pause your own reactivity when you’re triggered and scared
  • And how faith, practical tools, and connection can bring hope—even when the struggle doesn’t magically disappear

This episode is centered around the powerful book Amber co-wrote with her son, You Are Seen: 90 Devotions to Encourage Stressed and Anxious Teens—a resource born out of real life, real pain, and real healing. The message woven throughout our conversation is one every struggling teen (and mom) needs to hear: You are not broken. You are not alone. You are deeply seen.

If you’re a mom who feels scared, worn down, unsure what to do next—or quietly wondering if anyone understands what you’re carrying—press play and join us for a conversation that will leave you feeling understood, steadied, and a little less alone as you support your tween or teen through anxiety.

It’s so easy to lose it when our kids’ emotions are running high. We tell them to “calm down,” and before we know it… we’re yelling too.

If that sounds familiar, you’re going to love this episode.

My special guest, Lisa Danahy, is a certified yoga therapist, educator, and founder of Create Calm. She’s spent more than 35 years helping kids, parents, and teachers learn practical ways to manage big emotions, regulate their nervous systems, and create more calm at home, in classrooms, and within themselves.

Lisa shares some beautiful, down-to-earth tools you can start using right away — from “balloon breathing” to simple co-regulation practices that help both you and your kids reset in the heat of the moment. These are the kinds of things that actually work when your tween refuses to get out of bed, your teen is rolling their eyes, or you feel your own patience slipping.

You’ll walk away feeling encouraged, equipped, and reminded that calm isn’t about control — it’s about connection.

Grab your coffee, take a deep breath, and join us for this hopeful, heart-centered conversation.

In this insightful conversation, Dr. Anna Levy-Warren, a licensed clinical psychologist and founder of Organizational Tutors, breaks down the concept of executive functioning (EF)—the brain processes that help kids and teens organize, plan, focus, and manage their emotions. Discover how everyday tasks like getting ready for school, homework, and handling transitions can feel overwhelming for both kids and parents. Dr. Levy-Warren shares actionable strategies to help families support their tweens and teens with EF challenges, while also addressing the role of anxiety and how to manage family dynamics.
Key takeaways & tips:

  • Use visual timers so time is seen, not just spoken.
  • Do a 5-minute “start together”: help list the first 2–3 steps, then step back.
  • Work backward from the real due date, including life events (games, birthdays, church, work).
  • Expect a lag in shifting; name it and give a bridge (“Finish that last sentence, then let’s move to shoes”).
  • Lead with repair over guilt: “I got activated. I’m sorry. Let’s try that again.”
  • Model what you want to see: put your own phone away, breathe, open your calendar.

In this episode, I had the privilege of sitting down with Shelley Branine, and let me tell you—this conversation blew me away. Shelley is a truth seeker, freedom fighter, wife, and warrior mom of two amazing daughters—one of whom actually graduated from college just a week before finishing high school.

As a mom myself, I was inspired hearing her story of how she navigated the college process with her girls and discovered the power of dual enrollment. Shelley explains how high school students can take college courses—often for free or at very little cost—and how this path not only saves families significant time and money but also gives students incredible confidence and real-world experience.

I loved how Shelley shared not just the wins but also her own struggles with student loan debt, the misconceptions about dual enrollment, and the truth about scholarships and college athletics. She brings so much clarity to a topic that feels overwhelming for so many parents and students.

If you’ve ever wondered about alternatives to the traditional (and expensive) college route, this episode is full of hope and practical steps. You’ll walk away knowing how to start the conversation with your guidance counselor, what questions to ask, and how to explore this smarter, debt-free option for your family.

Shelley’s upcoming book, Finish College in High School (coming early 2026), will be an incredible resource, but for now, I can’t wait for you to hear her wisdom and encouragement in this episode.

If your teen has been vaping, using weed, lying, or just seems totally unmotivated—and you’re tired of the constant arguments or feeling unsure how to help them turn things around—this episode is for you.

Amber Hollingsworth is an addiction specialist and creator of the YouTube channel Put The Shovel Down—and in this interview, Amber shares what really helps when teens are experimenting, struggling, or unmotivated to change.

Amber shares

  • Why “waiting for rock bottom” backfires—and what creates change instead
  • The #1 most enabling behavior (hint: it’s not giving $20)
  • How to "Drop the rope” and get out of the tug-of-war and lower the resistance
  • How you want natural consequences vs. parent-imposed punishment to do the teaching
  • What true boundaries actually look like: spoiler - they are rules for yourself, not your teen
  • How to build “credit” with your teen so your words carry weight

Key Takeaways:

  • Don’t be the villain. When you argue, threaten, or lecture, you become the distraction that keeps your teen from looking inward.
  • Let the world be the bad guy. Natural consequences teach; parent-made punishments often fuel denial and blame.
  • Boundaries are about you. “If you’re arrested, I won’t pick you up”—that’s a boundary. “You can’t leave the house”—that’s a rule you likely can’t enforce.
  • Lead with empathy, then influence. “I get why fitting in matters” opens ears; lectures close them.
  • Build credibility (“credit”). When your teen feels understood, your guidance finally lands.

Do you have a teen who spends most of their time in their room, glued to their phone, avoiding homework, and tuning you out—no matter what you say or do?
You’re not alone—and today’s conversation will help you understand what’s really going on and what you can do about it.

In this powerful and practical episode, Sheryl sits down with Dr. Melanie McNally, clinical psychologist, brain coach, and author of Helping Your Unmotivated Teen: A Parent’s Guide to Unlock Your Child’s Potential and The Emotionally Intelligent Teen. Since 2013, Melanie has helped hundreds of adolescents build emotional intelligence, motivation, and confidence—and today, she’s sharing her insights with us.

You’ll hear why so many teens struggle with motivation today, how technology is affecting their brains and emotions, and what we can do as parents to help our tweens and teens develop drive, grit, and goals. You’ll also hear why the first step to helping your teen might be looking at your own phone habits—and how modeling change can make all the difference.

What You’ll Learn (quick hits)

  • Why tech disrupts self-regulation—and how to set simple family guardrails
  • The listening shift that opens teens up (pause, reflect, then respond)
  • Using both intrinsic and extrinsic motivators wisely
  • Pairing structure with choice (e.g., “one sport + one club,” teen’s choice)
  • How to spot small wins and transfer those skills to school

Do you ever feel like all your tween or teen eats is buttered noodles or ramen? 🙋‍♀️ I hear this from so many moms — and I’ve been there too! We want our kids to eat healthier and learn life skills, but with everything on our plates, it feels impossible to make it happen.

That’s why I’m so excited about this conversation with Katie Kimball. Katie is a mom of four, a former teacher, and the creator of Kids Cook Real Food, named the best online cooking class for kids by the Wall Street Journal. She’s passionate about helping families build a healthier relationship with food, and she has a gift for teaching kids (and parents!) the skills they need in the kitchen — and beyond.

In this episode, Katie shares:

  • How cooking can be a powerful way to connect with our kids and teach resilience.
  • Why getting tweens and teens involved in the kitchen is one of the best gifts we can give them.
  • Practical ways to help picky eaters expand their palate (without the battles).
  • The life skills our kids gain when we let them take ownership and even fail in safe ways.
  • How food impacts everything from mood to skin to energy — and how to help our kids notice it too.

This was such a fun and eye-opening conversation. Katie reminds us that teaching our kids to cook isn’t about adding another thing to our never-ending list — it’s about inviting them into everyday life in ways that lighten our load, build their confidence, and set them up for success.

In this deeply moving episode, I sit down with Jennifer Thompson—blogger, speaker, and author of Return to Jesus—for an honest conversation about faith, shame, healing, and the unconditional love of God.

Jennifer shares her powerful story of overcoming self-worth struggles and performance-based faith, including her experience with post-abortive shame and how a Bible study helped her finally understand that she is fully loved and accepted by God. Through raw honesty and vulnerability, Jennifer reminds us that we don’t have to hide the parts of our story that feel broken—we can bring them to Jesus and find redemption and peace.

This episode is for anyone who has ever felt unworthy, distant from God, or unsure of their place in faith. Jennifer’s gentle, compassionate message is a breath of fresh air for weary hearts.

You’ll hear about:

  • Why Jennifer believes our hardest struggles are where connection and healing begin
  • How to move from performance-based faith to a deeper relationship with God
  • Practical ways to abide with God in everyday life (yes, even in the laundry and late-night feedings)
  • Encouragement for moms who feel unseen, overwhelmed, or ashamed of parts of their past
  • A beautiful invitation to experience God’s love—no matter where you are in your faith journey

**Today, we're going to be talking about how to help our tweens and teens who are struggling with friendships, and this is really painful as a mom.

If you have a kid who is lonely and is struggling with girl drama, it might look a little bit different if you have a boy, but they have their version of that. If they're spending a lot of time isolated and alone in their room, they're not connecting outside of social media. Maybe they've even been bullied or excluded from friend groups, and they can see that on social media, and then it can be so complicated when they have social media and all that goes with that. When it comes to friendships, it can just complicate things, and they can compare themselves. It can be really rough, and it can be difficult to know what to say and what to do that's going to help.

And I hear from so many of you emailing me that you're saying, "Gosh, my kid is getting left out. They're lonely. They're spending all their time gaming, or they're coming home and crying every day because their best friend won't let them sit at the lunch table."

It takes on many different forms, and my special guest today is Sheri Gazitt, the CEO and founder of Teen Wise. It is an organization that empowers teen girls to conquer girl drama and establish healthy friendships. And she does private coaching. They have online courses, presentations, and professional trainings. She has been on the podcast before, and she has so much wisdom and insight and a really beautiful way of taking it all and making it really simple and easy to understand. And in this episode, she talks to us about what we can do to help our kids.

So let's dive in!**

What you will learn:

  • The significant impact of friendships on our tweens' and teens’ lives, specifically how social struggles can lead to clinical depression and anxiety.
  • The visible change in teens' body language and spark when they see a path forward in their social lives.
  • Research on how patterns of popularity and bullying in middle and high school can persist into adulthood.
  • Impact of the pandemic on teen friendships and their social skills.
  • The "football effect," where disagreements lead to team formation, exacerbates the situation.
  • Common mistakes parents make when supporting their children through social conflicts.
  • Building confidence and addressing inner critic.

Welcome to the show today, and I am so glad you're here. I want to start today by sharing something that my friend Amy sent to me yesterday. This is a meme entitled "How to be a mom in 2017. "We could actually change that to "2024" because it still applies to us today.

Make sure your children's academic, emotional, psychological, mental, spiritual, physical, nutritional and social needs are met. While being careful not to overstimulate, under-stimulate, and properly medicate, helicopter, or neglect them in a screen-free processed foods-free, GMO-free, negative energy-free, plastic-free body positive, socially conscious, egalitarian but also authoritative, nurturing, but fostering independence. Gentle but not overly permissive, pesticide-free, two-story multilingual home preferably in a cul de sac, with a backyard and 1.5 siblings spaced at least two years apart for proper development. Also, don't forget the coconut oil.

Then, it goes on to say, "How to be a mom in literally every generation before ours. Feed them sometimes."

Oh my gosh, we were having a huge conversation about how we can feel so exhausted that we can feel like we've lost ourselves as moms or feel like we're constantly abandoning our own needs.

If you are relating to this, you're going to love my special guest today Heather Chauvin. Heather has been named the next-generation thought leader in parenting and women's leadership. She's the author of Dying to Be a Good Mother and the podcast host of Emotionally Uncomfortable, and Heather's work supports women to manage their energy and time so they don't have to sacrifice their impact at work or at home with their kids. And her mission is to crack women open to their deepest potential and lead the life their soul craves.

There are so many nuggets of wisdom and goodness in this episode, so let's dive in!

**"Our kids don't kill themselves because of lack of love. They can have absolutely everything and still struggle with suicidal thoughts. I hear it every day. "Well, my daughter is a college, and she said she's been really depressed. But she's not the type to kill herself." Sheryl, if I could tell you the number of times people told me and then two weeks later called me back and said, "Oh my God, my child attempted suicide or killed herself or himself or themselves. I do not want that to happen."

Hi, friends; welcome to the show today.

And I'm so glad that you're here. Mental health and emotional wellness is something that we all want for our kids. And if our kids are struggling, if they're going through a tough time, if they're spending a lot of time in their bedrooms, and they're sad, and they are isolated and they're lonely, or you have a kid that is struggling with depression or anxiety or substance abuse.

It's heartbreaking. You feel powerless and confused; it's scary.

And the big question is, what do you do? That's what we ask ourselves. What do we do?

Well, my special guest today is AnneMoss Rogers is here with answers.

In this interview, AnneMoss bravely shares her heartbreaking journey of losing her son Charles to suicide. She opens up about the challenges leading up to his tragic passing, her struggles to support him through addiction, and what she would have done differently If only she'd known at the time.

AnneMoss is a dynamic mental health advocate, educator, and speaker. She is a TEDx speaker, and her blog, Emotionally Naked, has reached millions. She is the author of the award-winning memoir Diary of a Broken Mind and the best-selling book Emotionally Naked: A Teacher’s Guide to Preventing Suicide and Recognizing Students at Risk with co-writer Dr. Kimberly O’Brien.

She shares wonderful resources, which I want you to check out in the show notes. She also shares wisdom and what parents can do and say to create an environment where change is possible. There is support, healing, and hope available.

She also offers many free ebooks, so if you have a kid who is struggling with mental health, make sure in the show notes that you check those out.

So, without further ado, let's jump in.**

Welcome friend,

I am super honored to have Rachel Marie Martin on the show today. If you don’t recognize her name, she is the writer behind the site FindingJoy.net.

She’s written about divorce, heartbreak and reconnecting with an estranged child, dealing with an autoimmune disease in her youngest, feeling overwhelmed with littles, living through financial crises, waiting up for teens, and simply being overwhelmed and overjoyed by the day in, day out demands of motherhood.

A second marriage, co-parenting, being a bonus (step) mom to four more amazing people, moving across the country, anxiety, and being an entrepreneur and coach.

She believes in the power of the human spirit to overcome, to thrive and to find deep joy, and because of that, she pours out her heart via her site and so many platforms she has written for.

**She recently released her latest book, Mom Enough: Inspiring Letters for the Wonderfully Exhausting but Totally Normal Days of Motherhood, where she offers encouragement for moms by sharing over 40 personal letters through her journey.

She are going to love what she has to share. Let's dive in!

On today's episode, we're joined by the incredible Dayna Abraham. Dayna Abraham has become a trusted and proven leader in the parenting community. An award-winning, national board-certified educator who has spent over ten years in the classroom, she is the founder of the popular parenting site Lemon Lime Adventures.

**She is also the CEO of Calm the Chaos, a seven-figure company that offers support to thousands of parents worldwide. Today we discuss Dayna’s recent book, Calm The Chaos and we talk about parenting a challenging kid and Dayna shares the importance of how we can shift our perspective of how we view our kids and their challenging behaviors AND she shares some great nuggets from her book that will help to ground us in the heat of the challenging moments while finding calm in the chaos.

Here are some key talking points from the interview:**

  • As an educator, she noticed that kids with behavioral issues often had more going on beneath the surface, and she wanted to find ways to support them.
  • Dana shares her personal journey of dealing with her eldest son's challenging behavior, including being kicked out of preschool and frequent suspensions.
  • Dana discusses the shift in mindset needed when dealing with challenging behaviors in children. Instead of seeing the behavior as attacks or violence, she emphasizes the importance of understanding that the child is struggling and needs support.
  • Dana introduces four key ingredients for addressing challenges: connection, understanding, empowerment, and the parent being grounded. These ingredients provide a framework that can be adapted to each unique family and child, acknowledging that there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
  • Anchors are tools or phrases that ground parents in the heat of challenging moments. Examples include using a memory anchor, such as picturing the child as a baby, or simple phrases like "there is no bear" to signal safety to the brain.
  • Dana shares a powerful example of a conversation with her son highlighting the importance of empowering discussions rather than enforcing strict boundaries.

Welcome to the show today.

When our kids leave for college, it can be an exciting time but also a scary time. When our kids are in our home, we may have an illusion of control or at least some influence on their decisions and keeping them safe and now we can’t make sure that they are okay.

Then they leave, and we worry - will they make good decisions? Will they be okay? What if they are sick and don’t tell me or go to the doctor if it’s serious? Will they make friends? What if they are feeling homesick or anxious or depressed, or what if they go to a party and binge drink?

It can be a really helpless feeling AND we know that it’s a necessary part of growing up to give them the space and opportunity to make their own decisions, figure things out, and not to be calling them all the time.

Well Dr. Jill Grimes is here to help us. She is an award-winning author of the the humorous and evidence-based “The ULTIMATE College Student Health Handbook: Your Guide for Everything from Hangovers to Homesickness” She is passionate about prevention.

We talk a lot about some of the bigger things that we worry about like alcohol and drugs in their episode and how we can talk to our kids.

As a proud Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, her practical and evidence-based advice covers all ages, genders and body parts. Dr. Grimes has always enjoyed educating, in and out of the exam rooms. Her message is shared across all media platforms, from print magazines and online forums, to radio talk shows and television.

As a parent of freshly graduated college students herself, Dr. Grimes is especially empathetic to the medical challenges these young people experience.

Let’s dive in!

What you will learn:

  • What do teen parents need to know about today’s party culture (that is different from what we experienced)?
  • Is “weed” a big deal or not? Isn’t it less dangerous than alcohol?
  • What is “blackout drinking”? (Lots of risks here that both parents & kids don’t realize, including legal risks with consent)
  • Fentanyl use and Narcan availability in college students.
  • Weed's effects on mental health and genetics.

I think one of the hardest things to figure out as a parent of a tween or teen is when to step in and when to step back, especially when you see them struggling or they aren’t making the choice that you want them to make.

And when we do step in or offer our advice, it falls on deaf ears or, worse results in an argument.

Well, my special guest today is Dr. Emily Kline.

She’s here today to talk about her new book, The School of Hard Talks: How to Have Real Conversations with Your (Almost Grown) Kids.

In this interview, Emily shares her research-backed approach that prevents power struggles and pushback and builds stronger relationships through better conversations about any topic: curfews, sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll, college applications, and beyond.

Let’s dive in!

What you will learn:

  • What is motivational interviewing, and what are the benefits?
  • When does it make sense to use rewards and punishments to motivate kids, and when does that not make sense?
  • Why do parents get on their older kids’ nerves, and why do our teens and tweens dismiss parents’ input?
  • Understand how to suppress your parental “righting reflex” – the almost irresistible urge to help by offering reassurance and advice.
  • How can we help our tweens and teens navigate their decisions and dilemmas competently?
  • What are some ways to handle conflict that are productive and nurture the relationship?

As parents, we want our children to take responsibility for their schoolwork, chores, and choices. We want them to grow into independent adults, but when we see them struggling, we sometimes step in and problem-solve, telling them exactly what to do or even doing things ourselves. The problem is the more controlling we are with our kids, the more we can get in the way of them becoming confident, resilient, self-motivated, and independent.

How do we shift gears to supporting our children’s independence and confidence? How can we do less so they do more?

My special guest, Dr. Emily Edlynn, is here to share her book, Autonomy-Supportive Parenting, Reduce Parental Burnout and Raise Competent, Confident Children.

This is a great conversation about our struggle with letting go and allowing our kids to be independent and how we can get out of the way and support our tween's and teen’s independence, confidence, and motivation.

Let’s dive in!

What you will learn:

  • What does it mean to move from full-service to self-service with our kids?
  • The importance of having a chore routine.
  • Supportive parenting is about increasing internal motivation and how we do this with teens and tweens.
  • The three fundamental human needs of autonomy.
  • The importance of asking open-ended questions instead of lectures.
  • The power of emotional connection with our teens and tweens.
  • Controlling vs. autonomy-supportive parenting.
  • What it means to be a good-enough parent.
  • How we should aim for influence but not control.

Today, I'm talking with Ali Flynn, educator and creator of Hang in There, Mama. Ali and I discuss the joys and hardships of raising teens with an open heart, honesty, and some tears. She is a mom to four daughters and offers daily encouragement and support to moms while keeping it real and letting them know they are not alone on their motherhood journey.

Let’s dive in!

What you will learn:

  • The struggle to let go of our teens as they prepare to leave the nest.
  • Why do we struggle so much with feeling like enough?
  • Not measuring our worth as a mom by our kid's successes or failures.
  • Letting go of the comparison trap parents fall into with other parents.
  • Why holding tighter to our teens instead of loosening our grip has the opposite effect?
  • Trusting our teens more and more to help with the transition from teen to young adult.

Today, on the podcast, I talk with Ciara Fanlo. Ciara is a writer and the founder of Homing Instinct, a platform that offers support for teens and their families.

As a child and teen, Ciara felt depressed, anxious, self-harming, and suicidal. She went to countless therapists, took over a dozen medications, and was sent to a hospital, wilderness therapy, and a therapeutic boarding school. While she had some healing experiences, she largely felt that the psychiatric and residential health care systems failed to address the root causes and acknowledge the humanity and innate wisdom of teens.

After leaving treatment, Ciara committed to recovery on a different path. She came off all her medications, repaired her relationships with family, and graduated college with honors. She worked in different therapeutic settings and at a couple of large tech companies before deciding to devote her life to guiding teens. She now uses her experiences and insight to support teens in their healing.

You’re going to love this conversation! Let’s dive in!

What you will learn:

  • What was going on when she was a teenager that she was struggling so much?
  • Was there something at the time that parents could have done that would have been helpful?
  • How do parents impact their kids?
  • Ciara eventually found healing and actually got off medications, and graduated college with honors. What created that shift?
  • What wisdom and insight Ciara has for caregivers with a troubled teen like herself.
  • What do our teens think when parents try to “help” them better? What do parents do that is helpful and not so helpful?

Welcome to the show today, and I’m so glad that you’re joining me.

If you have a tween or teen, I know without a doubt that there are days when you say to yourself, “What are they thinking?!”

One day I woke up, and I had an alien living in my house. This was my first rodeo with a tween, and it felt like things changed overnight. I had no idea what I was doing. And on top of that, my daughter wasn’t talking as much. She began fighting to be independent and became moody and wasn’t wanting to go to school. I didn’t understand what was going on or how to talk to her.

Today I have a very special guest joining us. Zach Gottlieb, who is an amazing 17-year-old who is the founder of Talk With Zach.

Zach has created this Gen Z movement and community to provide a safe space where teens don’t feel alone in what they’re going through. He openly talks about relationships coping with emotions and inspires mental well-being and to make the world a better place. His motto: “We can’t change what we don’t talk about.”

I can’t wait for you to hear what Zach has to share about what kids today want their parents and other adults to know about how their generation is doing—and the best ways to support them. And perhaps most crucially, we'll delve into the mental health crisis among teens and what Gen Z wants older generations to truly understand.

As parents, we often assume we know what's important to our kids, but what might we be missing? It's time to listen, learn, and bridge the gap.

**Let’s jump right in!

What you will learn:**

  • What’s the worst thing you can do to your teen when they confide in you?
  • What are some of the things teens want to talk about?
  • Why Zach says parents should stop sharing viral college acceptance videos.
  • What do most teens today want their parents and other adults to know about how their generation is doing—and the best ways to support them?
  • What does Gen-Z want older generations to know about the mental health crisis among teens right now?
  • As parents, we think we know what is important to our kids, but what might we be missing?

Ugh. Middle school friends can be so challenging. And many of us, including myself, can carry the feelings of rejection or the belief that we won’t be accepted by “those” women, or something is wrong with me and I’m just not likable or pretty or funny or smart enough, and we feel isolated and lonely.

Today, my special guest is Amy Weatherly, who is so relatable, honest, and has a down-to-earth sense of humor.

Amy is on the show to talk about her latest book that she co-authored with Jess Johnson for our middle school girls about friendship, I'll Be There (And Let's Make Friendship Bracelets): A Girl's Guide to Making and Keeping Real-Life Friendships.

Amy and Jess created a Facebook page called Sister, I Am With You, which currently has over a million followers, where they get real about the ins and outs, the ups and down, and all the in-betweens of friendship.

You have probably seen her face on The Today Show, MSN.com, Good Morning America, Yahoo.com, Love What Matters, Focus on the Family, and of course, her own social media pages where she loves building communities of women who support each other fiercely.

**Yes, there are cool things about middle school, like more independence, new friends, and new activities. But there’s plenty of hard stuff too, like cliques, harsh judgment, the whole “popularity” thing, and, of course, drama.

Today my special guest is Jessica Speer. Jessica is an award-winning author of books for kids and teens*. She blends science, and stories, and unpacks tricky stuff that surfaces during childhood and adolescence. She has a master’s degree in social sciences and explores topics in ways that connect with kids.*

We discuss some of the important topics facing middle schoolers today that are covered in her latest book Middle School―Safety Goggles Advised: Exploring the Weird Stuff from Gossip to Grades, Cliques to Crushes, and Popularity to Peer Pressure.

We discuss the tween/teen social dynamics and development.

Let’s dive in.

Jessica shares:

  • Why middle school is such a tricky time for so many kids - boys and girls.
  • What is happening socially that can tend to make the tween and teen years particularly difficult socially to navigate?
  • What some of the repeated themes are that middle schoolers face today.
  • Why changing friendships are so common in middle school, and how parents can support their kids during this time.
  • What she learned while interviewing middle schoolers about conflict and aggressive behavior.

I've been hearing from so many of you who have kids who are being bullied or have been bullied, and they are really struggling. I've also heard from many of you whose kid is the bully and acting out in abusive ways towards others.
**Well, this is a fascinating episode that you want to listen to.

My special guest is Dr. Jennifer Fraser, who is the founder of The Bullied Brain (*www.bulliedbrain.com). She is an award-winning teacher of 20 years, an international presenter, and a published author. Dr. Fraser is here today to talk about her latest book, The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health. *In this episode, Dr. Fraser explains what we need to understand about how all forms of bullying and abuse affect our tween's and teens’ brains and how to help both the bullied and the bully heal.

So much of what she shares is extremely helpful in explaining tweens' and teens' behavior, such as grades falling, trouble with problem-solving, wanting to play video games 24/7, anxiety, and skipping school. If we want to support our kids to heal, we need to understand the way the brain works.**

"It appears that our bullying epidemic is not cured by blaming, shaming, and ostracizing. It is time for a revolution in how we think about and how we educate ourselves and children about bullying. It needs to be seen as a medical, not a moral problem, especially in childhood. It needs to be instantly identified. The perpetrator needs to be held accountable. Healing needs to begin."

So on that note, let’s dive in!

What you will learn:

  • What verbal abuse does to our children’s brains?
  • What happens to the brain when a child is bullied?
  • Why do kids abuse or bully other kids?
  • Why bullying is more than a moral issue – it’s a medical issue.
  • Why the way society deals with abuse is outdated, and what should we be doing instead?
  • What are some things parents can do when their child is being bullied?
  • Why it’s so easy for kids (and adults) to partake in cyberbullying. And what this does to our empathy for each other.
  • What happens to a child’s brain when a parent gives them the silent treatment?

Experts say that chronic sleep deprivation among teenagers has been linked to worse academic performance and mental and physical health problems, substance abuse, and drowsy driving. Because of the litany of public health risks, the American Academy of Pediatrics has called for schools to start no earlier than 8:30 a.m., as even 60 extra minutes of sleep per night can have major benefits in staving off long-term health issues.

My guest today, Lisa L. Lewis, advocated for California’s law for a later start time in High Schools and recently published a book called “The Sleep-Deprived Teen.” We talk today about the consequences of the lack of sleep in our teens and how we can help them thrive.

What you will learn:

  • How much sleep do teens need?
  • What happens when teens don’t get enough sleep?
  • What has the research shown between school start times and teen sleep?
  • What time do high schools currently start around the country, where else has this been done, and what’s on the horizon?
  • What are some ways parents can help their teens get enough sleep?
  • What are some helpful ideas about getting buy-in from your teenager? How do you actually make them understand the need for more sleep?
  • Best practices for teens to develop a sleep routine.

One of the hardest things about parenting is discerning when to step in and help your kids and when do you step back. This is especially tough during the tween and teen years when our kids are going through huge changes - socially, emotionally, academically, and physically. We are in a huge transitional phase when our kids hit the tween and teen years. And it’s really hard to step back when you’re watching them make choices that you don’t like. This is NOT easy!

We want our kids to be successful of course we do. We love them, and we care - but when are we actually caring so much that they don’t have to care as much?

If you are relating, you are going to find this episode super helpful.

My special guest today is speaker, educational consultant, and bestselling author Cindy Muchnick, who co-author the book, “The Parent Compass: Navigating Your Teen's Wellness and Academic Journey in Today's Competitive World.”

As a mom of four herself, Cindy is on a mission to educate parents on how to support and empower their kids to develop resilience and a sense of purpose without putting too much pressure on them.

A few of the things we talk about are - what kids wish parents would quit doing and allow them to do themselves, the effects on our teens when we over-parent, what to do instead when we are afraid our kids won’t be successful, and what to do to motivate our kids and build a stronger bond with them.

What you will learn:

  • What kids wish parents would quit doing and allow teens to do for themselves.
  • Why you shouldn't constantly be checking your teen's grades and assignments.
  • The effects on our teens when parents are over-parenting.
  • How we tend to measure ourselves based on our kid's success.
  • Tips for posting on social media about our teens
  • Helping your teen feel empowered and proud of their accomplishments without placing burdens on them.
  • How to motivate your teen.
  • Connecting with your teen over their interests to build a stronger bond.
  • Applying the 80/20 rule to parenting.

Becoming a step-parent can be challenging. After losing my Dad at the age of 10, my Mom remarried a few years later. I truly thought we would live happily ever. I had no idea how difficult it would be to blend our families. In this episode, Michelle shares her inspiring personal story of becoming a stepmom right before the pandemic and how she wasn’t prepared for all the feelings that were going to come up for her. Michelle’s story is incredibly hope-filled because she reached out and got the support she needed to create a strong healing bond with her step-daughter.

Whether you’re from a step-family or not, the truths shared in this episode will right true for any mom who wants to heal, grow, and be more deeply connected to her kids and those she loves.

  • The challenges of becoming a step-parent
  • How a step-parent can keep the memory of a child's parent alive.

**Hi Friend, Welcome to the show today. I am so glad that you are here and listening in.

If you have a kid that struggles with ADHD, or you suspect they may have ADHD or you are interested in how diet can impact our kids positively or negatively, I believe you are going to find this episode as fascinating as I did.**

**My guest today is Dana Kay, a Board Certified Holistic Health and Nutrition Practitioner and the Founder of ADHD Thrive Institute.

In this episode, Dana shares her own personal journey with her son struggling with behavioral challenges at an early age and how this sent her on a quest to find ways to support him, and how she discovered that there was a definite connection between diet, the gut, and reducing ADHD.

While I am a believer in medication making a huge difference in your kid's success, diet and nutrition often get left out of treating and healing ADHD.

Let's dive in1

Dana’s goal is to assist families with children with ADHD through nutrition and functional lab testing, discover HIDDEN stresses and dysfunctions, and implement a holistic and all-natural family approach to health and wellness.**

What you will learn:

  • What is the gut-brain connection?
  • Why your (and your teen’s) diet is the foundation of everything.
  • The link between antibiotics and ADHD.
  • What your gut has to do with your sleep.
  • Can diet reduce ADHD symptoms?
  • The top three foods recommended to families to remove from the diet.
  • What kinds of foods to add to the diet to prevent inflammation?
  • What gluten does to the gut - for everyone, not just those with an allergy.
  • The four base tests to get will give you a good overview of what's going on in your child's bio-individual body.

Hi Friend,

Welcome to the show today. I’m so glad that you’re here.

Today my special guest is Dr. Mary Kaspar, who has recently released the groundbreaking book The Popular Girls: Helping Your Daughter with Adolescent Power Struggles - 7 Steps for Flourishing.

What Dr. Kaspar shares in this episode was fascinating to me because she deconstructs popularity and its links to our girls/well-being and how the type of popularity that most girls crave is not the type that will improve their lives.

She explains how gaining power and status (which she calls relational aggression) is a big part of popularity and the behaviors that we need to be on the lookout for. She also shares the two different kinds of popularity, what’s happening in the teen brain to cause them to crave popularity and how to help our daughters navigate friendships, what to do when they are left out and how to recognize if your daughter is the mean girl and so much more!

Let's dive in!

What you will learn:

  • What is relational aggression.
  • Why does it seem like the “mean girls” are sucessful at gaining power among peers?
  • What the two different kinds of popularity are and how teens gain.
  • What is happening in our teen’s brains that make them crave popularity and urges for increased status.
  • How to help our daughters navigate popularity. Dr. Kaspar has 7 roadmaps.
  • Recognizing signs of relational aggression.
  • Knowing how to distinguish the difference between what is control in relationships and what is connection.
  • How do you know if your daughter is a mean girl? What are the signs to look for?
  • Understanding the sophisticated social behaviors involved in achieving high social status.
  • Things that we can do that will help our kids view the world differently in regards to how we treat people.
  • How to help your daughter if she’s being left out.

On today’s show, I have Natalie Silverstein, an author, consultant, nonprofit founder, and passionate advocate for family and youth service.

Her latest book, Simple Acts: The Busy Teens Guide to Making a Difference, was created to help adolescents and teens discover their passion and purpose through acts of kindness and service to others.

She believes you don’t need to change the world to make a big impact. Even the smallest stone thrown into the water creates a ripple. Teens CAN make a meaningful difference – one simple act at a time.

What you will learn:

  • The importance of our teens connecting with other human beings and looking outside their problems.
  • How to encourage your teens to use their favorite sport or interest or talent as an opportunity to give back to others.
  • Cultivating a service-minded family.
  • Every single thing that kids love to do in their free time can be translated into a way to give back to the community.
  • How volunteering improves our mental and emotional health.
  • The benefits of volunteering on your teen’s college applications - specifically volunteering from a place of giving back, not because “they have to.”

What if every child knew that the traits they might consider flaws or imperfections are their greatest gifts? What if they knew that what makes them “different” is actually their superpower? For that matter, what if every adult knew it, too?

Best Selling author Monica Berg and her daughter, Abigail. have written a children’s book that will invite readers to embrace the parts of themselves that feel different. Inspired by Abigail's dyslexia diagnosis, this book explores the feelings that arise for children who do not learn in a typical manner and celebrates how those differences make them strong.

Set in present-day New York, this book speaks to 7-8-year-old readers, which is the typical age at which children discover they are dyslexic. The tale is told with humor, authenticity, and a powerful message of celebrating and embracing our differences.

What you will learn:

  • How to change your mindset to saying "learning difference" versus "disability."
  • The benefits of learning to dyslexia (and other learning differences) as a superpower.
  • How to have a conversation with your kid about their learning difference.

Dr. Saltzman is a physician, mindfulness coach, author, former Stanford gymnast, and abuse survivor who is passionate about creating protective prevention programs and establishing comprehensive national policies to end abuse in sports and other community programs.

Until now.

“Spot a Spider” is a groundbreaking new training program started by Dr. Amy Saltzman, M.D, that teaches children, teens, and young adults how to protect themselves from all types of abuse: sneaky (covert) emotional abuse (also known as grooming), and obvious (overt) emotional, physical and sexual abuse.
Let’s dig in!

How perpetrators use our fear and desire to control others.
Understand the data that shows the more comfortable kids and families are with using proper body names, the less likely they are to be abused.

Why it's so important to be continuously having conversations about abuse with our kids?
How parents can easily make excuses or not have their eyes open regarding abuse.

Who here wishes that they were better at knowing how to teach their kids how to manage their money?

Maybe you never learned how to budget your own money growing up and had to learn when you hit adulthood.

If you’re like me, you weren’t all that good at budgeting and often had to learn the hard way. I remember signing up for a credit card in college and having no idea about being charged interest and thinking it was so much fun to go shopping and buy a new outfit only to find out later that I had to pay interest when you couldn’t pay the whole thing off. And I must admit that I bounced more checks than I want to admit because I hadn’t learned how to manage a checkbook.

Wouldn’t it be awesome to raise kids who were financially empowered - where they understand the value of a dollar, are motivated to earn their own money, and be responsible with that money to save, give and spend wisely.

My special guests today are the authors of a fantastic book How To Money - Jean Chatzky is a New York Times Best Selling Author and financial expert who has spent decades reporting on personal finance — including 25 years on the Today show. She is also the CEO and co-founder of HerMoney. And Kathryn Tuggle is Chief Content Officer and Gracie-Award winning Editor-in-Chief at HerMoney.com and produces and cohosts the HerMoney Podcast.

Let’s dive into how to empower your kids to take charge of How to Money!

What you will learn:

  • How social media plays into our teen's buying choices.
  • Helping our teens become educated consumers.
  • Raising our teen's awareness of how marketing works.
  • How to encourage your teen to save money.
  • Use allowance, correctly, with your kids to teach them about money.
  • How much allowance should you give your child?
  • How to set up a budget with your teen and get them excited about it.

If you could protect your child from unnecessary anxiety, depression, and chronic stress, and foster a greater sense of happiness and well-being in their lives, wouldn’t you?

In the book, Generation Sleepless, Heather Turgeon and Julie Wright, authors of the bestseller, The Happy Sleeper, uncover one of the greatest threats to our teenagers’ physical and mental health: sleep deprivation. Caught in a perfect storm of omnipresent screens, academic overload, and unnecessarily early school start times, Generation Sleepless illustrates how our children are operating in a constant state of sleep debt while struggling to meet the demands of adolescence.

Drawing on the latest scientific research, Generation Sleepless reveals that today’s teenagers are, in fact, the most sleep-deprived population in human history and, at a critical phase of development, need more sleep than their younger siblings. Yet, they’re getting drastically less.

What you will learn:

  • What is the ideal number of hours of sleep for teens?
  • The factors that steal teens' sleep.
  • What the impact is on teens due to lack of sleep.
  • Signs of sleeplessness for parents to look for in their kids.

Parenting tweens and teens can be so challenging in so many ways.

Our tweens and teens are pulling away, they tend to think they know everything, we have less control over the choices and decisions they make,

It’s hard to not react and feel resentful, frustrated and angry.

**Hi Friend,

Welcome to the podcast today and I'm so glad that you're here joining me.

We all know how crazy expensive college can be these days. I had no idea but the research shows, the majority of college dropouts leave because of financial pressure**.

Today I am talking with Brad Baldridge**, and he is an experienced College Funding Specialist who has worked with thousands of families to plan and save for college and this is such an interesting interview because I wish I would have known Brad before my three kids went to college because so much of what he talks about I didn't know and I wasn't intentional like I could have been (my husband and I could have been) to really prepare for our kids going to college and to find creative ways to save money.

In this episode Brad shares so much that you're going to find helpful:

How to plan ahead and how to pay for college.**

  • How to plan ahead and pay for college
  • Maximizing financial aid and scholarships (there are so many scholarships out there)
  • How you can be more intentional and save money

**I'm so excited for you to hear and listen to this and I know you're going to find it really helpful.

So let's jump in!

**Hey Mamas -

I'm doing something a little different in this episode. I'm sharing a replay of a workshop I lead in our Inner Circle membership group last week called 7 Things You Can Do To Support Your Tween or Teen's Mental and Emotional Health (and your own!).

So many of you have reached out to me and shared how your kids are struggling right now. Many of our kids are stressed, anxious, depressed and they aren't talking about it and if they are it's hard to know what to say when you just want to help them to feel better.**

  • How stress shows up.
  • What we need to understand about mental and emotional health
  • 7 things you can do to support your tween or teen right now.

Hi Friend, I’m so happy that you’re joining me today.

I once heard a saying that really resonated with me - tweens and teens are like cats. They can hide in their rooms and if you try to go in there and force them out it doesn’t work. Trying to communicate with our tweens and teens can be challenging. AND, there is good news. How you communicate with your kids makes all the difference - there are things that we do as parents that causes a wedge in our relationship with them. And there are things that you can do that will increase the likelihood that they will open up and talk to you. This is what this show is all about today. How to communicate in ways that will build connection with your tweens and teens.

Today my guest is Sheri Gazett. Sheri is a Mom of 3 daughters, a parent educator, author, and teen life coach and the founder of Teen Wise.

And Sheri has a gift for communicating clearly what not to do and say when you’re talking to your tween and teens and what to do that will greatly improve your relationship with them.

Today I'm interviewing Kim Muench, a certified parenting coach and the founder of the Real Life Parent Guide, and the author of the recent book, Becoming Me While Raising You: A Mother's Journey to Her Self.In May 2008, Kim Muench received a call from the eldest of her five children, twenty-year-old son Nick, who confessed that his life was being destroyed by alcohol abuse. During his spiral through the darkness, Kim worked with her son to help him find long-term sobriety. But she knew that he was not the only person who needed to change. So, while she partnered with her family in her son’s recovery, she also began to make her own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being a priority. Knowing parenthood was her greatest role, Kim sought to uncover the limiting beliefs she had developed in childhood that were infecting the relationships she’d built with those she loved the most. Kim made a conscious choice to parent in a different light.

Kim’s amazing story will challenge and inspire you.

We discuss how our childhoods impact the way we parent our own kids.
How we formed core beliefs that limit us and our kids.
How hard it is to watch our kids struggle and not enable them. And the growth that can come from their struggle.
The importance of connecting with ourselves and our own inner wisdom.
And so much more good stuff!!

Hi Friend,

I’m so glad that you’re listening in today. I’m talking to my new friend Kelly Hatcher who has been such an inspiration to me and I know she will be to you too when you hear her story.

**Kelly has her Bachelor’s Degree in Education and her Master’s in Counseling. Kelly is a single mom and has two boys. Her oldest has been struggling with substance use for the past ten years. She spent many years thinking she was helping her son while her world around her was falling apart. After trying everything from loving, tough love, enabling, and boundaries she kept giving in to, she finally found a Family Recovery Coach that helped her understand what she was and wasn’t doing correctly to help her son. Once she learned the various tools, her relationship with her son and with herself changed completely.

Kelly became a Nationally Certified Family Recovery Coach and Interventionist and started her own business at New Day Family Recovery**. She now helps families who are working through their own recovery in this family disease.

When it comes to our tweens and teens' mental health, we are in a crisis. And we have to talk about it even though we might not want to.

Parents are asking,
How can you tell the difference between a moody teenager and one that is struggling with depression or is at high risk for hurting themselves?

What are the signs that you should get help?

And how do you talk to your tween or teen in a way that they will want to talk to you if and when they are struggling with mental health issues?

My guest today, is Jason Reid. Jason just came out with a powerful film - “Tell My Story” that just aired on PBS.

Jason’s son Ryan took his life when he was 14, leaving two Post-It Notes: one was the passcode to his computer; the second said “Tell My Story.”

Jason set off on a quest to understand what led his son to end his own life, and what he could have done differently.

He is here today, to share what he has learned and how to have difficult but necessary conversations with our kids.

**When it comes to talking to our tweens and teens about sex or consent, it's intimidating and scary. What do you say? How to know where to start? How do you say it in a way that will sink in?

  • What is consent & building confidence with saying no
  • Recommendations and resources to get started
  • Empowering your tweens or teens around consent
  • The Acronym of Consent

Today you are going to hear an incredibly powerful story.

I’m with Pat and Tammy McLeod who have written the book Hit Hard, One Family’s Journey of Letting Go of What Was and Learning To Live Well With What Is. And I could not put it down.

In the fall of 2008 Pat and Tammy’s son Zach collapsed on a high school football field; and sustained a severe brain injury. And they were faced with the devastating reality that things would never be the same for their beloved son.

I really wanted to have them on the show because each one of us has experienced grief and losses in our lives and yet I’ve found that we often don’t know how to deal with our grief, pain, and losses - it can be a complex and lonely journey - one that we want to avoid at all costs.

**In this interview, you will hear Tammy and Pat’s journey of how they have walked and continue to walk through ambiguous loss. I was so drawn to both of them - their faith and honesty. I felt like I was on sacred ground and I believe you will feel the same too when you hear what they have to share.

How many of us are dissatisfied with our bodies?

I grew up drinking Tab and wishing I looked like Farrah Fawcett, maybe you wished you looked like Brooke Shields or Jennifer Anniston, or Madonna.

If we thought it was tough to accept and love our bodies and ourselves back then imagine what it must be like for our girls today. And it can be an on-going challenge to appreciate our bodies and to support our daughters to do the same.

Today, I’m talking with world-leading body image expert and psychology professor Dr. Charlotte Markey about helping our girls to understand, accept, and appreciate their bodies and her latest book, The Body Image Book for girls, Love Yourself and Grow Up Fearless.

**We talk about the diet culture, some of the things that we do or say that are unhelpful and can even be damaging to our girls and how can we set a good example with their own eating and exercise habits and self-talk.

As parents, it’s been a year of difficult conversations with our children about the virus, and political upheaval, and rioting. And this past week we’ve watched as protestors in Washington D.C. stormed the Capitol on Wednesday.

**Our tweens and teens are seeing all of this. It's upsetting.

What do we say? How do we navigate all of this and answer their questions if they’re even asking and if they’re not and they’re quiet how do we talk about this mess when we’re having a hard time processing it?**

**In this episode, I'm not going to talk about anything political. I want to support you to use this tragic event as an opportunity to check in with them and find out what they're hearing and how they're feeling and to discuss how to deal with disagreements and conflict in healthy ways, how to take what is happening in our world and do good, and other important conversations that we need to be having with our kids as we wrestle through the chaos, uncertainty, and confusion around us.

If you’re a mom of a boy - you are well aware that there is no manual that can possibly prepare you for the unique joys and challenges of raising a son.

And when they hit the tween and teen years there are a lot of changes - you may be finding your once sweet, affectionate son is beginning to pull away, they may talk less and not include you in how they’re doing.

**Or they may resist your advice. You may be finding it difficult to know how to connect with them and support them when they’re struggling.

These are all topics that Kara Lewis and I discuss in this interview.**

Kara has had a lot of experience as the lucky mom of four boys.

Kara founded TheJoysofBoys.com in 2012 as a way to celebrate the little men in her life and has now grown into a resource that connects parents of boys with family-focused activities, parenting advice, and support to help them to connect and communicate with their sons to bring out the best in them.

Kara has published two journals, A Mother and Her Son: A Shared Journal Adventure and A Father and His Son: A Shared Journal Adventure. **These journals help parents connect with their sons in a fun way.
