Hi, I am Susanne, a former international Ballerina, mother to 3 boys, turned entrepreneur. I am committed to raising the bar in the ballet community and starting conversations that not only empower dancers but create change in this industry. Get all the tools you need to take action, stop chasing what doesn't work, and turn your passion into profit. Connect to yourself from within, bust through your fears, and push yourself to new levels. Be prepared so when the music stops you have a plan that will ensure your success on and off the stage.
This is a podcast for anyone in the performing arts community who wants more in their life, business or relationships. I feel that these conversations need to be broken down and discussed so that we don’t lose sight of who we are and what we can be. I want my story to end in triumph just as much as I want it for every single performing artist.
Pointe at yourself to rise, to all that you are capable of.

To is a conversation of self-reflection around blame.
Do I own 100% responsibility for where I am right now?
Are we taking ownership of where we are and who we are interacting with?
How many times a day are you pointing fingers at everyone else other than owning
that you are where you are right now as a result of the choices you have made?
Stop blaming others you are in charge of your life.

I wanted to talk to you about stretching today. I was sitting at the beach a few days ago and I remembered what my word for the year was, and that was stretch, to stretch myself, to stretch my mind and all kinds of impulses and emotions came in. Not, only because I myself feel right now stretched so much - I ask for it this from a place of calm. Today I share how I reflect on this and more.

Stepping away and letting yourself create space to take messy actions is not only freeing, it also requires a lot of energy.
I found myself over the past weeks taking a lot of actions, unsure of whether they would lead to anything or not. And I not only gained so much clarity but I also learned the more I am willing to fail and miss step, the less I actually do and the more I find answers to questions I didn't know I had. In today's episode, you will learn - why messy action leads to clarity - why do we resist imperfect actions - my personal journey of imperfect action leading to R.I.S.E. Media. Today's conversation is exploring the possibilities of blockchain technology with Lisa Seery. Lisa is helping us to weed through the jungle of new terminology and to form an understanding of what blockchain, web3.0, NFT, and Token actually stand for. So why did I invite Lisa to the show - because I deeply believe that web3.0 technology holds the answer to the consistent shortage of money within the arts. It is a technology that will allow us to eradicate the starving artist mentality and the earlier we empower ourselves with knowledge around it the faster we can act upon creating change that will impact future generations of artists worldwide. About Lisa:
Lisa spent 15 years working in the investment industry and climbing the corporate ladder before leaving her VP role to pursue her calling as a financial mentor to women. The majority of her career revolved around global asset management, stocks, trading, investment portfolios, and the technology behind those things.
The clients she had the honor of working with were the top investment banks and financial institutions in the world.
She also volunteered as a mentor and financial educator for underprivileged women in Los Angeles.
In her coaching practice, she combines her unique skills and experience as a health coach and investment professional to guide clients toward optimal financial wellness via education and accountability. Whether you're a new investor, experienced investor, or working to adapt new habits to transform your financial mindset, Lisa can provide you with the tools and guidance necessary for you to make informed decisions with greater peace of mind.
Unlike a financial advisor, she doesn't represent a financial institution and doesn't retain a percent of your investments as her fee. You can feel confident knowing her guidance is without bias.
Ready to take control of your money and feel really good about your finances? Resources for Lisa
So excited to introduce Damien Simon to everyone, he is a music composer/performer that lives in Florida and well let me tell you such a pleasure to chat with him. It has not been very often that I get to talk to a composer and hear how he looks at creating his art. For so much of my career I just knew the music was there and of course, knew a person composed it. Though to chat through his process and how that supports various performing arts!
Damien Simon
Damien Simon, is a music composer/performer in St. Augustine, FL. Damien, a graduate of the Purchase Conservatory and University College of Dublin, has been scoring and performing music for dance, orchestras/ensembles, film/television companies all over the world.
Damien has garnered a unique style of contemporary and classical musics and presenting them with various mediums. From film in Australia, dance in NYC, to performing ensembles in Europe; Damien delivers the appropriate score for the project being produced.

Behavioral change is often gradual and slow and it takes a lot of awareness because if we're not aware of behavior we are not aware that we are actually creating a certain outcome. Behavior change is a big thing, but it rarely ever happens all of a sudden, it takes small steps to change a behavior that is not serving you.
We always have two choices. We can either be the victim of our circumstances or we are taking responsibility for our own actions.

Well, what a journey it has been so far.
Today we are celebrating 200 episodes of the Podcast with my dearest friend Rachel Josefina.
We talk about all items pertaining to the Performing Arts and how Focus really matters.
There was a time I would joke in the theatre that one's Focus needs more Focus!
How true is this statement is, for how unfocused Artists can be at times when their Focus is unclear.
Rachel and I have an upcoming virtual event for Performing Artists come to join us!

Thank you for joining me today, it's a quickie about current events that I feel need linking to the Performing Arts community. Do you know the term FinTech? Financial Technology has come into my world a lot over the past 6 months, it's basically using technology to remove the friction when processing payments online. What has fascinated me is how closely it resembles the mentality of the art on do a show get paid, rinse & repeat.
All businesses & arts need to be held accountable for how we earn, spend and operate. An example is something called a Data Room. This is a tool that holds all financials, basically a secure storage place for a company's documents. Now imagine that an arts company were to have one so a donor or investor could look, transparently at a company's records. How would this change the playing field?

Welcome back to a quickie with me! Today we talk about you are not a cause. Definition of a Non-for-profit, they generate revenue for a cause. Are performing artists are therefore a 'casue' I challenge you to question this definition and look to see if there is another way to fund the organizations.
We question;
- Can arts companies make money?
- Is the cause the target of the income?
- Can the income be more than it takes to cover the overhead?

I am so honoured to have spent time with Kristin today and be able to share our

in optimal health. We discuss.
Kristin has dedicated her life to helping artists and high performers understand nutrition,
well-being and what it means to live their fullest life.
Enjoy this one for it is dear to me to connect with such a person that is truly making a performer's life better.

What if you actively chose not to settle?
What if you didn't buy into the old story of
"it has always been this way"?
What if you chose differently? Would you then gear yourself up for your day differently?
Would this allow you to be that amazing artist you are by not settling for others 'old stories'

We all have beliefs on how certain things must operate and how they have to be. When we're looking at how the performing arts industry is set up, it's all based on a whole bunch of beliefs that have applied 60 70 years ago, but we haven't yet looked to see if they are compatible in today's world, where we have way more research data, where we have more ability, where we have more resources to tap in to reshape the belief structure to fit for today and the future. This week I talk through how our belief system can be the driver of our careers, lives, and relationships.

In today’s episode of Cultivating Happier Dancers, Kristin and Michelle join Susanne to talk about creating an emotionally safe space in the dance studio. Kristin introduces the discussion with a story when she was 10 of how she just lost her dog, and they were told that whatever happened in their personal lives did not belong in the dance studio. The three study this experience and what it brought to the dance studio. Michelle narrates a more positive story and a model of an emotionally safe space in the dance studio where it was all about the collaborative effort. Susanne then complements Kristin and Michelle’s story, stressing that allowing people the freedom to feel and express their emotions creates a good environment for growth and learning. The essence of today’s discussion is that your students cannot learn if they do not feel safe. Therefore, this discussion sheds light on the ingredients of creating an emotionally safe space in the dance studio to enable growth.

Today is our first episode of Cultivating Happier Dancers. Michelle Loucadoux-Fraser and Kristin Deiss join Susanne Puerschel. Michelle is one of the weird multi-hyphenates in the world of dance. She’s been a ballet dancer, a musical theater dancer, an educator, a writer, and now she’s doing a lot of things with Danscend. She started out as a ballet dancer and then moved through to the musical theater world for almost a decade and has been teaching dancers for almost 30 years.
Kristin is a dancer, choreographer, and educator who grew up in Philadelphia, PA where she first received her dance training at the Rock School of the Pennsylvania Ballet before attending both the School of American Ballet as well as the Miami City Ballet School. After a year-long struggle with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, Kristin left the ballet barre behind to pursue another path, but ultimately returned to the world she loved. Kristin holds a BA in History from Drew University, an MA in History from UNC Chapel Hill, and an MFA in Dance Performance and Choreography from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. She has performed with companies such as Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance, the LA Philharmonic, and Jessica Kondrath | The Movement, as well as presented choreographic work in festivals throughout the country. Kristin is also a certified yoga teacher through the Mind Body Dancer program, a Reiki Master, and an Integrated Energy Practitioner. She is currently the Chair of the Commercial Dance Department at Hussian College Los Angeles.
In today’s episode, Kristin and Michelle join Susanne to discuss the goal of Cultivating Happier Dancers. They discuss mental wellness of dancers and why it’s important to collaborate. They discuss the dynamics in the dance studio and its impact on both the educators and their students. Michelle shares her experiences with toxic environment in the dance studio during their upbringing and the fear, disrespect, and demoralization she faced. Kristin details three aspects that we can utilize to make sure that our dance studio dynamics are in the best interest of educators and dancers.

She is the co-host of the Everybody holds a story podcasts and the collaborative book project. Ultimately, her mission is to help guide the next generation of humans in understanding and loving their bodies.
In this episode, Sue speaks about her journey from dancing at a young age, while competing in Highland dancing to becoming an RMT (Registered Massage Therapist). She also talks about overcoming fears and life’s expectations that cause a sense of perfectionism as one pursues a dream or career. She emphasizes the importance of tapping into one’s higher self and listening to one’s intuition or soul, while on such a journey. She then thoroughly describes what fascial massage is all about and talks about how one can do it on their own.

In this episode, Christy and I discuss what it really means to show up authentically in the performing arts industry. We discuss the fact that it is a hard thing to do for a big organization but that doesn't mean it's impossible. And it doesn't mean it can't be done. We discuss intimacy as the solution and dealing with ego as our biggest overhead cost.

This episode is the most requested, the most listen to episode from the original Money & Art series with Christy and Susanne.
Replay Thursday back from March of this year. Enjoy.
Today Christy & Susanne really explore the energy behind their beliefs of Money.
Susanne opens up about her inner thoughts. "Money is energy, and I want to start with, here's how I felt when I heard that for the first time. It's like, are you kidding me? Money isn't energy. And how can, how can it be energy? Money is tangible. Money buys things, money. That piece of paper makes this world.
Susanne: [00:18:10] Like even it has to do with our filter, with our reticular activating system. If we don't believe we can, well, then it will show us only the example said will prove yes
Christy: [00:21:11] Cause that was the example I saw. Exactly. That was the energy that we were consistently in. And it is so hard to...
Susanne: [00:37:16] When you believe the path will open up within you will get ideas, you will know what to say. You will know instinctually what kind of actions to take.
So honoured you have joined us today,
So Much ❤

In business and performing arts today, it feels like you got to fit in and leave your emotions at the door in order to get there. Christy and I challenge this notion. Effective collaboration in every level is essential for business success. Former dancers who try their hands on entrepreneurship need to learn one critical thing about collaboration. If your mindset is limited to collaborating with others in the same industry, then you’re missing out on a lot of opportunities. Susanne Puerschel brings in Josephine Bonnington-Mailisi to talk about this. Josephine is a dancer, aerialist and teacher. In this episode, she shares her great passion for dancing, circus and more. She elaborates on her vision, pillars of content, her life-long dreams and the concept of gaining financial freedom.

The topic up for discussion today is “Why investing in yourself is Essential”. In this episode, Christy and I talk about how you can get off the hamster wheel of having to do the same, boring thing for the rest of your life, switching off the never-ending desire to be good enough for somebody else to find yourself and your inner strength, and stopping the lack mentality. We uncover the value of service to others and the ripple effect of your energy state.
We then delve into the paramount need to invest in oneself and what it means. We look at ways in which you can invest in yourself, many of which are free, such as listening to podcasts, reading consistently, and sitting by the ocean. We reveal the value of your network and community in elevating yourself and each other.

Dancing is an art and a tool for creativity for many people. However, the pressure of being perfect and the high standards in the industry create walls that limit the potential of young talents in the dancing community. Susanne Puerschel unpacks this topic with Ashley Mowrey, a mindset coach and educator for dancers. Ashley shares that through her life coaching, she helps her students through releasing self-doubt and quieting their inner critic. She is convinced that it is important to set your core values and check in on them to see if they align with the actions they’re doing and the path they are pursuing in life. She also notes how the mere act of enjoying the process and having a healthy environment can help a budding dancer tremendously in their journey.

In this episode of Money & Art, Christy and I talk about three ingredients for success—consistency, collaboration, and the ability to ask questions. We look at how our habits shape who we are and the type of energy we show up every day; the unhealthy competition among artists, which normally comes from a place of lack, and the detrimental effect it has had on the dance and ballet industry. We uncover how we can shift that mindset. We touch on the paramount importance of not being afraid to ask questions, regardless of how stupid you or other people think they are. We talk about how the ingredients lead to making more money in the arts.

We’re not just there yet, but beautiful souls like Lauren Brown are working their hearts out to make that possibility real. As dancers, we all dream of gaining mastery over that elite level performance, but the way we were raised in the industry has left us with the wrong idea of what it means. In her coaching work, Naira Agvanean reminds her mentees that they are humans first before they are dancers, that they have to take care of themselves too, to have fun and be fulfilled, that they have to let go of the obsession towards perfection and allow the true extraordinary artists within them to rise above. Like most of us, Naira has been thrust into ballet from a very young age and has seen firsthand how the system does not nurture this kind of encouragement in its dancers. Now, she is on a mission to help dancers develop a fearless mindset so that they can allow themselves to truly grow in their dancing journey and eventually live a successful and fulfilling life after the dance is over. Listen in as she trades thought-provoking insights on dance, mindset, and self-care in this conversation with Susanne Puerschel.

Christy and Susanne discuss the saying from Chris Harder, a successful entrepreneur, philanthropist, and podcaster, “When good people make good money, they do great things.” in this episode of Money & Art. We analyze the fact that any cause that you’re passionate about and that you feel there should be a change requires money. So instead of chasing recognition and seeking validation, a more gainful pursuit would be seeking more money which always contributes to that cause you’re passionate about and leads to a better quality of life.

Joining Susanne Puerschel for a chat, Xenia Wiest shares her beautiful ideas on how to make the world of ballet better. Drawing from the lessons that she learned from her career, Xenia believes that there is so much that the industry can do to take better care of their dancers and bring out the best in them.
So honoured you have joined us today,
So Much ❤
Susanne

There are a lot of parallels between dance and life that the things dancers learn the hard way throughout their career are often the same things that form the core tenets of personal development. Joanna Vargas offers her wealth of wisdom and experience in both fields through two new podcasts, The Get Up Girl and Dance Your Life. While appealing to two different audiences, both podcasts teach its listeners how to embrace their imperfections and dance with the chaos. Throughout her career as a dancer and dance studio owner, Joanna has earned her way to the front at a time when choosing something different was not celebrated. We see that theme over and over again, whether it’s in dancers being shamed into performing like everyone else or women being force-fitted into roles that don’t speak to who they really are. This conversation between Joanna and host Susanne Puerschel challenges these patterns of conformity and teaches each one of us to choose ourselves and be comfortable in our own skin. Listen in and be inspired to dance your life the way you’re supposed to.

Susanne spent the past two days in a virtual mastermind filled with 89 other amazing entrepreneurs. Coming out of it with a profound idea about how artists really look at themselves.
When we put ourselves into rooms virtual or in-person we invite the uncomfortable in. We ask for our story to be reframed, to realize that when we make it all about "I" we may miss the greater gift to see others. Why are you making it only about you?

And since that cannot be achieved overnight, a great way to start improving is to get better every day, even with the smallest things. Susanne Puerschel is joined by five-time gold medalist dancer, creative director, and host of 4 The Love of Thriving Podcast, Sarah Dokowicz, who tells her story of success just by focusing on micro-steps. Sarah looks back on her colorful dancing career learning with the most prominent industry figures and how this experience proved useful in her career transition. Dance as an art form is all about grace, connection, and finesse. But to those who chase their passion for dancing on the professional stage, achieving success in the industry means going through a grueling process of auditions. Lexi Evans sits down with Susanne Puerschel to look back on her dancing career full of rejections, loneliness, and abandonment, making her realize what it really takes to be a dance instructor herself as well as the importance of reaching out to others. Lexi also discusses how these challenges contributed to her growth and the foundation of Virtual Ballet Intensive, which accommodates aspiring dancers in the middle of a pandemic.

Today, I would like to talk to you about comparison, I have read so many times that one should stop comparing oneself in order to open the door of being a better dancer, or all together to live a happier life. And I never really saw explained WHY and HOW.
You will be able to change your mindset quicker and you will be able to take actions quicker to interfere. Nobody else is like you and that alone is worth a lifelong celebration. Instead of wishing for more of what others have. Understand what you have and that there is nothing out there that you are not able to learn.

Pain is a constant of life, and teaching ourselves to be numb enough to ignore them will not do us any good. For those dealing with chronic pain, the only way to overcome it is by facing it head-on and choosing happiness above anything else. Adela Tomlinson shares how she did this with Susanne Puerschel, detailing how she pivoted her career a number of times due to her Mexican descent, as well as the severe consequences brought upon her spinal cord injury. She also explains how her childhood ballet lessons play a huge role in handling the most painful moments in her life, the true cost of happiness, and how she influences her kids to foster a mindset of gratitude in all aspects.

Today Susanne and Christy get into how to set ones Thermostat.
It can get unbearable. You know, this is why we're seeing a lot of burnouts does this, why are we seeing a lot of dis / ease in the industry, because the pressure, you can take like, a tiny little bottle and you hold it out. It doesn't have to be heavy, but it depends on how long you're holding it out there, that at a certain time, you will not be able to hold it anymore, because the pressure is too much.

Christy Little is a living testament to this, with her life of creativity constantly challenged by a looming feeling of unworthiness.

This episode was a tough one for Susanne to record, it centres around a life event that she describes as being the lowest point in her life and how the shame of that event followed her for 15 years. Until she asked for help nothing changed and hopes that by sharing you can see your past doesn’t define your present. In an industry that demands perfection, failure isn’t an option. Shame held Suanne back for rover a decade, but she has leaned to point at herself and take action, that mistakes are better than regret and it’s about how quickly you get up. Welcome to my FIRST episode - I can’t believe the podcast is here! I am so excited to have you join me, as I introduce who I am and why I felt so driven to create the Pointe To Rise community. I will share with you a story that changed how I went from being unfulfilled in corporate America, fearful and unsure of myself as a woman and how I learnt to turn my back on perfection and take quick messy action. I talk about how ballet can be lonely, competitive and is known to be about pleasing everyone else. I do not want you to forget yourself!
Take back your power my love and don’t let anyone define you. Define yourself. Now let's get started.
