Fanatic! It’s our last show for the year. Engineer X, Engineer Am-Rock and I would like to thank you so much for tuning in. We hope we kept things interesting and that you will stay with us as we go fanatically into 2025.

Just my opinion, but I don’t think there’s ever been a time when music wasn’t essential to getting through the challenges life throws at us, seemingly at every turn. That being said, I think music becomes more of an asset in certain times. It keeps us inspired, curious and encouraged. I have no crystal ball for this kind of thing but it very well could be that we will be leaning on music pretty hard next year. Good thing for us, there’s a lot of good music to be heard and we’re going to listen to a lot of it.

We hope you’ll find tonight’s show to be a good soundtrack for whatever you’re up to as 2024 draws to a close.

Kim Salmon, one of my favorites of all time has an album coming out called Smoked Salmon on February 28. As you might expect we’ll be getting into this one big time. We are playing one of the tracks from it tonight. It was released as a 7” weeks ago.

I have firsthand information about a recording session that wrapped up recently. I’m not at liberty to disclose any more information but I can say there’s a good chance the tracks will be coming out later this year and we have some great music to look forward to. Fanatic. I hope you had a good week. Hopefully the winds that have been feeding the fires in Southern California are pulling back and allowing firefighting personnel to make advances against the flames.

There are people who are unfortunately politicizing this catastrophe. Please do not lose sight of the hard fact that a lot of good people are suddenly without a home to live in, a school to go to or much else but the clothes. This is not the time to point fingers. Clean up, restoration, and the other heavy lifts will be costly and take years to complete.

Fanatic, as you’re probably well aware, days ago, we lost the great film director David Lynch. I had the good fortune to be in one of his films and to have visited with him on many occasions. Our conversations were always fascinating, ranging from music to art to whatever else was on his mind. My manager, Heidi reminded me that years ago. She and I did a podcast of me recounting stories from being with David. I thought you might like to hear it, so here’s the address.

Tonight we’re going to listen to a new track by Dax Riggs. It’s been a long time since this very talented musician put out any music. As far as I know, there are two tracks available from his upcoming release, 7 Songs For Spiders which comes out in late January of next year. Really looking forward to this one.

The Czech Vampires album by Jealous Yellow Is really good.

Tonight’s track by Agender is from their upcoming album due next year. I haven’t heard it yet, but I’m looking forward to it. Here’s info on the track we’re playing tonight.

Fanatic! So grateful to be able to bring you this music. I think with tonight’s show, we’ve struck the perfect balance and have made a great mixtape.

The Bratmobile reissues of Girls Get Busy and Ladies, Women And Girls are out and they sound excellent.

The Snooper / Prison Affair Split 7-inch record is really good. Each band has three tracks. It looks like Bandcamp is out of them but you can find some on Discogs. I wish they would make larger runs of these records. I think more people should be hearing both bands. No matter what condition your condition is in there’s always music, so As Wesley Willis always advised: rock the jam session. Let’s keep doing it!

Fanatic! I hope you’ve had a great week and had a chance to listen to a lot of music. I’ve been getting quite a bit in.

The Damned at the 100 Club from July 1976 is a great bit of live early Damned. I got it years ago before it went out of print. It was reissued on Radiation. It’s an audience tape but all the music’s there. Drummer Rat Scabies is fantastic. I think he was the Damned’s secret weapon. Wire’s Not About To Die album, the Pink Flag version sounds great at this time of the year. I got it as a bootleg many years ago but then Wire put it out officially from the master tapes. Stellar listening.

If you notice, we’re listening yet again to Jimmy Lloyd’s Rocket In My Pocket at the top of our second hour. Three times this year! I know. I just think it’s a perfect song and it keeps finding its way into the show.

Phil Lesh, the bass player in the Grateful Dead passed away. He was a great musician. I’m so glad I got to see him play a few times.

Fanatic, a tough bit of news. As much as I’d like to keep things buoyant in our weekly show notes, sometimes a little rain must fall. Inger Lorre the musician and longtime pal of mine passed away on October 16. She was a true artist, a genuine creative. I got the news yesterday. A few hours after I found this out, I got an email from the wife of Ollie Olsen, the great Australian musician, that he had passed away, also on October 16. Ollie had contacted me months ago, informing me about his condition. We’ve listened to a lot of his music from his bands No, Whirlywirld and Taipan Tiger Girls on our show.

Fanatic! I hope you’re having a great October wherever you are. I’ve been getting in some good listening. I don’t think we’ve discussed this before but I’d like to recommend a reissue of an old record. It took me a few years but I finally got the remastered version of Pink Flag by Wire. The band has their own label called Pink Flag and sell it on their site but you might be able to find it elsewhere and not get beaten up by the postage. I found my copy at Amoeba in Los Angeles. The sharpness, clarity and punch of the remaster is not subtle. If you like this record it’s totally worth it.

Fanatic, we have for you tonight, what I hope you will find to be a good time October mix tape. It’s our first show in the month of months.

I’m trying to get a lot of music played every night. During the day, I’ve been making notes on what to play, something I don’t think I’ve done before on a regular basis. It’s proving to be effective, especially remembering to keep up with playing 7” records. I find they’re easy to get but also easy to let them accumulate and sit unplayed. It’s a lot of getting up and sitting back down again but it’s a good thing to do. I’ve always liked the 7” record ritual, there’s so much activity necessary, if you’re in the right mood, it’s the coolest.

The other two and myself are already at work putting together next week’s show, that has a very cool conceptual first hour I hope you’ll like.

Fanatic. I hope the weather is stable where you are. Helene has impacted millions of lives. It’s going to be months before some parts of the country are back up and running again. Awful. Where I am is almost nonstop rain, a few branches down here and there. I saw some bad accidents on the highway yesterday.

Fanatic! I’d like to lodge a complaint. It’s now well into September but the weather in my area is still peaking into the 90s every day. I want to somehow “reclaim my time” as they say. At least the early sunsets and the falling leaves somewhat indicate seasonal change. It’s frustrating but the weather is a little bigger than my Fanatic expectations.

I’ve been travelling over the last few days and haven’t had a chance to listen to new records so I don’t have any recommendations for you. Sorry about that! Did the Wire CD box set reissues of Pink Flag, Chairs Missing and 154 from 2018 appear on your radar? Some very interesting outtakes on all of them. I’m going to play them all again in the next few days and take notes. We should take advantage of all the outtake tracks and devote some time to them. The sets were put out by Wire on their Pink Flag label, so the sound quality is really good. I’ll get on that.

Fanatic! I hope you had a tremendous and music filled week. I made my way through the three Kosmetika records, Pop Soap, Illustration and Luxury. I thought they were really good.

I went for a return listen to Hence by Oren Ambarchi. I’m glad he’s so prolific because he’s always worth checking out.

The new Osees album, Sorcs 80 is out. We start in on it tonight. Engineer X will have his work cut out for him on this album. There’s all kinds of language the FCC would no doubt find objectionable in the tracks. It’s a great album.

I’ve been trying to make all my summer visits with as many of my hot weather favorites as possible. Last night, I played Strawberries by the Damned. I listen to it once a year at some point in the summer. It was the band’s follow up to The Black Album. In June 1983, I was in Washington DC for the Damned / Minor Threat show at the Ontario Theater.

I was lucky to see Minor Threat play a lot of times and they weren’t a band you’d want to follow onto the stage. On this date, MT were laser-sighted. One of the greatest aspects of the band was their incredible precision live. Lyle Preslar, the band’s guitar player was razor sharp. All of them were great players but it was always remarkable to me how exact he was at the speed the band played. Minor Threat was insanely good on this night. I saw Rat Scabies in the lobby before the Damned went on and asked him how they planned to follow up and he said he didn’t know. I kinda felt bad for him. As I remember, the Damned opened with Ignite. They were great as I had last seen them in late 1981 but I don’t think they could overcome the challenge by the hometown band. It was great to see Minor Threat completely hold their own with a band we all loved so much. I’m so glad I got to see this show.

This weekend I’m starting in on the Nation Of Ulysses catalog. I try to cycle through their LPs at least once per summer. The albums got remastered years ago and sound really good.

Fanatic! I can never be sure where these notes find you. Where I am is consistently hot day after day, although a few hours ago, I noticed some of the trees outside were starting to shed their leaves, in perhaps the slightest of insinuations of the season coming to an end. August is a peak month for listening to music! At least in the part of the world I live in, it is summer’s crescendo.

I’ve found that often something I’m anticipating isn’t as good as the thoughts I have about it, where the actual thing wasn’t nearly as good as how I’d pictured it. The food in the advertisement is always better looking than what hits the table. I think advertisers understand the human mind creates the advertised version, all the while knowing the actual isn’t going to be nearly as good. We’re at once a highly complex species but also often surprisingly open to suggestion.

I’ve really come to enjoy anticipating things even though I know it’s probably best to be “in the moment” as much as possible. The imagination is without limit. The real world holds nothing but limits.

One of the reasons I really like August is because it makes me think about September, which is the start of my three favorite months of the year. So, I enjoy the relentless heat of August as best I can, knowing September is only days away. I might prefer thinking about September than actually being in September. I’m not saying September, October and November are letdowns, it’s just that I’m really enjoying thoughts of autumn and the cooling temperatures while the weather is stuck on the simmer setting. By the time the temperature actually starts dropping, I’ll pretty much have forgotten how damn hot it is at present. This is one of the reasons I try to listen to music seasonally, in an effort to get as much as possible out of time and place. I enjoy the long sunsets, knowing the cycle of early darkness (which I far more prefer) is on the way. Wow. That took a lot of words. Not sorry!

We have five Saturdays together in August. Soon we’ll be coming to the end of our visits with Charles M. Bogert and his frogs. One of the reasons we start our summer shows with a track of his, is because they sound cool and I relate to this great herpetologist and his mission to document the sounds of frogs and toads in North America. He was in his own way a fanatic.

SF!!! V4 takes in the year of 2018. I was on tour all over the world. The entries go from Los Angeles to Iceland and back.
One thing I’ve never addressed is the fact there’s a noticeable time lag in the year in which the book was written and when it comes out. If you don’t mind, I’d like to explain.

Writing the manuscript is done in real time, journal style. I’ve found that’s the easy part. When it comes to actually finishing the book—that’s when it turns into a long journey.

I’ve been working on SF!!! V4 since I finished the final edit and scanning for SF!!! V3. My usual schedule has me editing/fact checking/scanning for one volume while I write another. I’m in the second draft of SF!!! V5, which takes in 2019 right now. At the same time, I’m writing new entries, finding materials, and trying to scan images every day. What I’m trying to say is these books have ended up being incredibly time-intensive.

I worked on SF!!! V4 on tour busses, in backstage areas, airports and my office. The book has over 700 images, which I think are key in telling the story. Scanning is a perfect mix of dull repetition and exactitude. It takes hours but I think it’s worth it.

In the next-to-final draft, I read the manuscript out loud to Heidi. We do our best to improve sentences, which often run too long. This takes hours a day for several days. Then, the manuscript is sent to Carol and she goes through it looking for punctuation mistakes. After that, it’s like starting all over as the book and the images go to Dave, our layout guy.

This turns into a multi-day, very interactive bit of work. Usually, additional images are needed to fill in blank spaces, captions need to be finalized, etc. PDF files go back and forth. Often Dave and I are working in real time well into the night. It takes as long as it takes. By the time the book arrives from the printer, it’s been through quite a bit and so have we.

It’s a lot of time to spend on a book that “does okay” which begs the question why make them at all? The answer goes to the absolute core of the subject: I’m trying my best to capture the feeling you get when you listen to music, think about music and in my case, are obsessed with music. I want to make something you will hopefully enjoy. That’s the beginning and end of it. It’s a DIY idea from start to finish. The financial aspect never enters into it. The decision is simple—I either make the book or I don’t. I chose to do it. The time and effort required is on me. Not a single person anywhere needs these books! I know this. In my line of work, nothing I do can be considered essential. Honestly, I live for the elective extracurricular. To start with an idea and see it through to where it’s an actual thing, to the best of my ability—this is what I do. I literally work 7 days a week. Some days more than others but I do not acknowledge the concept of a day off. I like what I do, at least I think so. At this point, I don’t know anything else.

Also, a lot of mix folders on the treadmill. One of the things I do is take all the tracks to our show, load them into the phone and take that to the gym. It’s a good way to make the final draft. It’s a lot of time to spend on a show but I think it’s worth it. Also, the show tracks makes for a good mix, which to me is what a radio show is all about. It’s been a long time since I made a mix tape with vinyl and cassettes. I still have all my old mix tapes. Many years ago, I was visiting DC and was with Ian MacKaye and we were driving around in his car. He’s playing a cassette and for some reason I knew what the next track was going to be. It was all really old music. I asked why I knew the tape. He pulled it out and showed it to me. It was one I’d made in high school! He still had it and It still sounded good. I still think it’s kind of cheating making digital mix folders as it’s so convenient, I feel I’m somehow taking some imagined easy way out. Construction of a mix tape was often a multi hour endeavor. In a way, they’re like a journal. I think it’s a good idea to make a mix folder at least once a season, tag it and leave it on your hard drive. You can always come back to it and see where you were at back then.

Fanatic. I hope you had a good week and you’re maintaining your hydration levels. If you take the briefest of glances at tonight’s playlist you might possibly notice there’s a bit of a concept happening. We will be listening to a few songs by the Ruts. As we do every year to the best of our ability, we acknowledge the sad passing of the great band’s vocalist, Malcolm Owen, who died on July 14 1980.

One of the many great aspects of music is it allows us familiarity, where if you really like a band, it’s possible you’ve spent hours and hours listening to them. It’s not as if you actually know them but in a way you do. It is possible to have spent years or even decades listening to a band and you can acknowledge that your life has a soundtrack and a band or an artist is part of it. This is one of my favorite parts of being a long time listener to many of the bands we have on our show. The Ruts are part of my soundtrack and maybe yours as well. There are a lot of great records coming out this year. I don’t know if you would find this interesting but there’s a 2LP version of King Crimson’s USA album that just came out. That’s the first Crimson album I ever heard. I’ve been a fan ever since. Hopefully my copy arrives next week. I listened to Robert Fripp’s approved version of Earthbound a few weeks ago, so great. Fripp’s been putting out some really full-on reissues and box sets of King Crimson over the last few years. Last year, I conquered the 24 CD Road To Red box set. I did a CD a day. I have the 19 CD On Off The Road: 1981-1984 waiting to go. I really like the Adrian Belew era of King Crimson, especially the third album, Three Of A Perfect Pair.

Before the summer’s over, I’ll try to get some King Crimson music into the show. It’s perfect warm-to-hot weather music.

Tonight’s show survived the treadmill test. I try to take all the tracks to the gym and listen to them in running order as the last draft. I think we’ve got a good one for you tonight.

We’ve got a Whippets track on for tonight. Their new album is out. I just got mine. Very cool. You might remember the band Wristwatch we played on the show, Bobby Hussy is in both bands. He’s keeping busy.

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. I’ve been at the desk working away on things and trying to get in as much listening as possible. I checked out the new Memo PST album, really great. I checked out the first Fake Fruit album, which I hadn’t played in awhile. They have a new one coming out later this year I’m looking forward to hearing. I got my first listen to TV Smith’s new album Handwriting. I think it’s my favorite of his solo stuff so far. It’s great. I’ve played the new Bed Maker album once so far. Really great.

Larry Hardy of In The Red Records and I are extra stoked about this record. You might have seen bootlegs of the Adverts practice tape and sadly, you might have heard the low-fi wrong speed, missing a song bootlegs that have been in circulation. I was able to get the tape the Adverts sent to Chiswick Records in search of a record deal. It sounded much better than the bootlegs. I asked TV Smith if Larry and I could put it out. He said yes. Ian MacKaye and I transferred the tape at Tonal Park in Takoma, MD. We sent the tracks to Mikey Young for mastering. The record came out sounding great and it’s a true bit of Punk Rock history by one of the great bands of the genre. In a perfect rookie error made by two old men who should know better, the two columns of the liner notes on the inner sleeve are reversed so you have to read the right column first. Sorry! Anyway, the record is really cool and it’s available right now. We didn’t make many so you might want to move on it sooner than later.

I just got my copy of the Dr. Sure’s album in the mail a few days ago and had a chance to check it out. I think it’s the best record they’ve ever done. Looking forward to getting the tracks happening for you. I know we played some of the tracks but we’ll get into the rest of them. Very cool record.

You might know that Larry Hardy and I are always looking to put out a cool record and we’ve done it again. The test pressings came back weeks ago and we liked them and went ahead with the pressing. That came back and everyone’s happy with it. I’m waiting on Larry to get word to me as to when it’s at the distributor. I think this will be very soon. We’re SO INTO this one! My copies are in the mail, so hopefully I’ll be able to hear it in the next few days. Can’t wait to tell you more about this one.

My next book, Stay Fanatic!!! Vol. 4 will be out later this year. I’ll let you know. All first edition copies will be signed.

I heard yet another album I’m not at liberty to disclose details of but I can say that we have more great music to look forward to later this year. And there’s a cool 12” Larry Hardy and I have been working on for the last few months. We got test pressings a few weeks ago and they sounded great. It should be with us soon. When it’s in and ready to go, I’ll let you know. We’re really excited about this one.

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. I’ve been in relative confinement, working on the final draft of a book. I think there’s at least three to four days left to go. I’m about 100,000 words in and still kind of like it.

This schedule hasn’t left me much time to listen to much music besides tonight’s show and work on next week’s show.

April 18 he’s in San Diego at the Soda Bar with Memo PST, which is Chris Shaw’s band. If that name is familiar it’s because he’s made a lot of really good records. He was in GØGGS with Ty Segall and Charles, he was also in Ex-Cult, Vile Nation and Richard Rose.

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. I’ve been working on writing projects and putting together tracks for our spring shows. The weather is changing and it’s been very inspiring for making our play lists. I’ve been getting up early and that’s been slightly shortening my night time listening but I’m trying to get some manuscripts banged into shape for release later in the year.

Charles Moothart, who’s been on our show a lot in bands like Fuzz, Ty Segall, CFM and GØGGS to mention but a few, not only has a new album out on In The Red called Black Holes Don’t Choke but he’s got some shows coming up.

Fanatic! Fanatic spring has done sprung. I know as far as the calendar is concerned, spring is unleashed on the 19th. As far as I’m concerned, with the end of February, winter’s sent packing until December 1. Some records go back to the shelf and some come down. These seasonal/light cycle/temperature rituals are just what I do, I think it’s cool. I try to not to reflect it too much on our show, lest my self-imposed rules restrict our collective enjoyment of our brief time together once a week.

Fanatic! It’s Friday night, 2232 hrs. I figured I’d get started on the notes early. I was at the mail pick up place earlier and got a few records that had come in. I’m spoiled for choice tonight. Over the last few days, I got into these. Great listening.

The new Ruts DC album Electracoustic Volume 2 is so good!

I wrote Mr. Segs a couple of nights ago and asked him to consider making Volume 3 sooner than later. Not only are the songs amazing in this format, you can really hear what excellent musicians the three of them are.

Air Miami reissue

Me. Me. Me. By Air Miami (featuring Mark Robinson and Bridget Cross of Unrest) has been remastered and re-cut at 45 rpm over two 12” discs and sounds great. The non-LP track Pucker has been added.

Tonight, I started with Machine Gun Etiquette by the Damned and from there, a pretty good sounding copy of the first Stooges album, pressed in South Africa.

With great anticipation, this was next up.

Boris - Heavy Rocks 2LP set.

I’m listening to the new 2LP pressing of the 2002 Heavy Rocks album by Boris. It was a CD only release until very recently. This is seriously happening. You might want to check this out. Good quality vinyl from Third Man.

New Marnie Stern LP - The Comeback Kid

I was lucky enough to land an advance LP and it’s great from start to finish. It’s not out until early November but I don’t want you to forget about this one. It’s happening for pre-order right now.

New Upchuck album

Bite The Hand That Feeds is the new Upchuck album. It releases on 10-13-23. It’s really good.

Kid Congo Powers & The Near Death Experience – Live In St. Kilda LP

We didn’t get to any tracks from this one over the summer. It ended up being my favorite hot weather listen of this year. Great record I kept forgetting to bring to your attention. It’s on In The Red. The site says it’s still in the pre-order stage but that’s not true. It’s been out for months. Really worth checking out.

Also, if you’ve not checked it out, Kid’s autobiography, Some New Kind Of Kick is really cool.

Fanatic! I hope you’re having a great September weekend, no matter where you are. I’ve been sitting on this information for weeks and now, finally, I can exhale. There is a great new record to check out.

New Marnie Stern LP!!! Fanatic, this was the record I’ve been waiting to tell you about. It announced a couple of days ago. I’ve played it a few times and it’s really great. Brand new music from our good pal and sonic ally, Marnie Stern: The Comeback Kid.

As I’ve told you too many times, it is never for me to divulge information on the release of a record before a band or label does so. I was sent the tracks for this record weeks ago and didn’t say a word to anyone. I was looking forward to when the label would be posting the Bandcamp information, which means the record is okay to announce here. So glad there’s a new Marnie record to play tracks from.

There’s a new Vintage Crop 7”. I like this band. The tracks are great.

New Melenas album. You might have noticed there’s a new Melenas LP called Ahora on Bandcamp from the great Trouble In Mind label. I don’t think there’s a bad second on it. We’ll be checking out every track of this one. It releases at the end of the month.

Many years ago, I wrote a book called Solipsist. It’s been out of print for a long time. We just made a run of it. All copies are signed.

I’ve got shows coming up.

Fanatic, you might remember last year, we started our first September show with the same song we’re starting tonight’s show with. I think it’s a perfect track to get things going.

We have a great conceptual second hour. You might remember I told you how great the recent David Bowie release Divine Symmetry. The record is basically a new look at Bowie’s Hunky Dory album. I’ve been less than amazed at the recent Bowie projects like the remix of Station To Station, Lodger and The Man Who Sold The World. I think the mixes on Divine Symmetry are great and the best way to check them out wouldn’t be to play a song a week as we sometimes do, but to listen to the whole thing so you’ll be able to immerse yourself. It’s a great listening experience.

Fanatic! We try to do this every August and to my recollection, I think we have for quite a few years. It’s our somewhat annual Case Of The Punks! show. Tonight’s entire show is dedicated to the music genre that shook the world!

Wow! That’s a lot of songs. I hope you not only get through them but have a great time doing it.

While I can’t give you details, I wanted to let you know that at the end of the month, there’s an album that will be announced that we’ll be playing every track from. The label sent it to me yesterday and it made my day to know it will out near the end of the year. It’s not for me to talk about a record before the label or band announces but I will say there will be a great excuse to go to the record store this year, as if there hasn’t been enough already. So many cool records in 2023! This will be yet one more. Stoked doesn’t even begin to describe me about this one.

Apparently, the vinyl is on its way to those who preordered and the digital was unleashed yesterday. Sounds great what I’ve been able to listen to so far. Can’t wait for the vinyl. There have been a lot of Les Rallizes Dénudés releases over the last several months. It’s about time Takashi Mizutani and his bandmates got more visibility.

I’ve got tour dates starting next month.

For this batch of shows, we’ve printed two books. The first is a run of my new book Sic. The cover is slightly different than the previous one and will be exclusive to the tour. We also printed a tour edition of a book I published in the last century called Solipsist. This edition has a few less typos and a cover also exclusive to the tour. I just finished signing all of them.

It looks like California is in for some weather. Los Angeles isn’t built for heavy rainfall. I hope the state makes it through.

Fanatic. I’m back from England and trying to not look like the shape of a plane seat. I had a great time at Rebellion and the two shows at Dingwalls.

I opened my mail and saw my Water Machine 7” had arrived. That’s getting played asap.

Last night, with great interest I listened to the 2LP Black Editions reissue of Dispersion by High Rise. So great! Black Editions has gone from a cool announcement on the internet years ago to an amazing label to pay close attention to.

Fanatic! I’m on a train heading from Preston down to London. Yesterday I was at the Rebellion Festival. I ran into Gaye Advert, TV Smith and Pete “Manic Esso” Haynes of the Lurkers. I’ve got two shows over the weekend at Dingwalls and then on Monday I’m back to the USA. I’ve got a lot more shows happening later in the year. https://www.henryrollins.com/tour

I’ve evened out from jet lag well enough to get everywhere I need to be on time. Doing these shows via trains, taxis and hotels is time consuming. I used to do weeks at a time like this through Europe and the USA. It’s not greatest way to grind through the hours but at this point, I’m used to it.

A lot of new tunes on our show tonight. We’re always looking for different music to listen to. Terri Gender Bender’s new track is really cool. She’s always up to something. I hope you’ve had a chance to check out the Bellevue album by the Bobby Lees. I’m looking forward to what they’ll get up to next.

Have you seen this? Pretty cool. High On Fire’s The Art of Self Defense has been remixed. I haven’t had the chance to fully absorb the differences but I’m looking forward to getting into it. I think all of their records are worth checking out.

Fanatic. Back from Australia and New Zealand. I’m here for several days and then off again to England for three shows.

The Snooper album Super Snõõper is out and it’s really good.

The reissue of Unrest’s Imperial F.F.R.R. sounds great and the vinyl is really cool too.

The new Mark Robinson / Trevor Kampmann collaboration Party Milk has rendered a good record called Your Problem As A Mountain.

Listened to both last night. Both Mark and Trevor are very interesting people and the two of them together is a perfect pairing.

Here are the tour dates coming up in England and beyond. I’m going to try and make the two London club shows somewhat different than what I’ve been doing on this tour and rotate some other stories into the sets.

You might note we’ve got a lot of Ruts songs in our second hour. It would be to acknowledge the passing of the band’s vocalist Malcolm Owen on July 14, 1980. We’ve listened to all these songs many times on the show. Ruts DC carries on and they’re a great band.

Fanatic! Not only is it the weekend but finally, I’m in a backstage area with heating. It’s been one cold room preshow after another. Glad to be able to move my hands. I’m in Wellington, New Zealand for the last show of the run and already I’m starting to miss it. The shows have been going well and it’s been a great time.

One thing that’s been an interesting challenge is we started the year in the winter with the factory-installed cold and dark. We got a break for a few weeks and then we came here, right in time for Australian/New Zealand winter. I’ve got three shows in England next month but then we’re back in the USA from mid September until mid November, so it will be autumn and back into the cold and dark.

I’m stoked on all the new music I’ve been able to put into the upcoming shows I’ve been working on before the shows every night. Cool bands new to our show be kicking in pretty soon.

I’ve listening to the tracks that inform tonight’s show and I think we’ve got a good gathering of tunes lined up for you.

I just switched from our show tonight to an incredible box set coming out in September on Cherry Red. It’s 10CD collection of Hawkwind live shows from the Space Ritual era. Most of it’s unreleased. We’ll be getting into this. I’ve been sampling tracks here and there and it sounds amazing. I’m listening to Orgone Accumulator right now and it’s happening big time. Lots of good music to look forward to!

Fanatic! I’m still in Australia and having a great time. I had some time to get to Repressed Records in Sydney and found a few bands I’d never heard of, which we’ll be getting into the show as soon as possible.

It’s a great thing to be in Australia but it’s a challenging schedule. The geography is such to often make it quite an effort to get to the next show. Lots of airports and rental cars! It’s a lot of moves to get through just to make it the venue. We’re about a month in now and I’ve gotten used to being back in airports again.

Fanatic! Hello from Melbourne, Australia. This is the venue I’m in tonight.

I’m here tonight and tomorrow night.

I had a good day of record hunting at Vicious Sloth yesterday.

I always find something amazing there.

We’ve just announced shows for September, October and November.

Thanks to Richie at Strangeworld Records, here in Melbourne, we will have a lot of new bands to check out in the weeks upcoming. It will take us awhile to work the bands into the shows but we’ll get there. Richie turned me onto this cool group.

Between the two visits I made to his shop, we’ve got a lot of new music to check out. I’ll be getting into these records as best I can to figure out what to get into the shows.

Shows have been going great. If you’ve never been to Australia, I can recommend it without hesitation. Melbourne is one of my favorite destinations. It’s basically winter here, so it’s a lot of overcast skies, cool to cold temperatures and rain. It’s been an interesting year, touring on and off for months in pretty much the same light cycle. In Europe we were in the winter and here we are again.

I hope you’ve been getting a lot of music played. Most of my listening has been in small rooms with a show looming. It’s great of course but somewhat distracted. Show days are like hanging out with a huge wave coming ever closer.

Fanatic! Hello from beautiful Brisbane, Australia. We’re well into the shows here and things are going great. I got back from the show last night and even though I was pretty beat, I found a vein of cool music and spent awhile listening and downloading. Touring in Australia, while great, presents its challenges. The geography is such that there are a lot of airports and way too many days off for my liking. Our routine is often an early drive to an airport, return the rental car, get to the gate, onto the flight, get luggage, to the rental car place and onward. It’s a lot of corners to turn before we get to the venue but after a couple of weeks, it’s just what you do. For now, we’re camping out in Brisbane. We have a show tonight, about 90 minutes from here. Tomorrow, we’re back for the third Brisbane show.

Australia is an incredible place, some of the views are not to be believed. It’s winter here now, so the weather is cool and dry for the most part. We were in Darwin, Alice Springs and Cairns recently and it was quite warm but from here on out, it’s going to be like mid autumn in the USA. Interesting weather for June.

As I’m writing this, I’m listening to tracks to our show. I think it’s a good one. As I remember, I worked on this one in Europe in cold backstage areas with summer on my mind. It was an interesting bit of projection to get the mood right but hopefully it will be a good soundtrack.

I have to get packed up and out of here. I'll be back in this room in about twelve hours. Australia on a Saturday night, should be lively.

Fanatic! I’m presently in Darwin, Australia. Sunny and hot. Shows have been going well. Last night we were in Alice Springs, a beautiful part of the country. Every part of Australia I’ve ever been to is pretty amazing. After tonight’s show, we head to Cairns. These are the rest of the dates.

I like doing shows in Australia but travel can be challenging. We’re often in two airports a day, checking out of one hotel and into another. We often spend a good part of the day just getting to soundcheck. In a few days, things will even out a little as we’ll be doing multiple nights in some places. I’m hoping to get to some record stores in the next few weeks.

I seemed to have evened out from jet lag pretty quickly but I suspect I’m due for a sucker punch of some kind as it was so easy this time around, there has to be a catch.

Boris and the Melvins are touring together. How great is that going to be?! You might need to bring an extra set of ears.

Hours later. The show is done. I’m up in a few hours to head for the airport. We have a great show lined up for you. The more you listen, the better it gets.

Fanatic. Hello from Perth Australia. So great to be back. One of the first things I did after landing in Melbourne a few days ago was schedule a visit to Strangeworld Records. Richie Ramone runs a great shop. He’s the reason why we’ve had so many great Australian bands on our show over the years. On Friday, I had a long day of press and one of the interviews was on Michael Mulholland’s show Junkyard on 106.7 PBS. I haven’t seen Michael since I was here in 2016. He’s got a great show and just as he did in 2016, he switched me on to a few more bands I’d never heard of. I got to meet members of Blonde Revolver at Triple R, which was really cool. The prospect of such a large amount of new music coming into the show is very exciting. We’re always looking for new music to bring into the show and a trip to Australia always supplies. There’s a lot of record stores yet to be checked out on this run, so hopefully this is just the start.

Algy Ward, bassist from the Damned’s Machine Gun Etiquette era has passed away. It’s a great album which I hope you have. Seeing him play with the Damned in 1979 was a highpoint for me.

Fanatic. This is a bit of a different show than we usually have for you. For tonight, it’s Garage Rock from the last century. Below tonight’s track list, I put in the notes I made. Maybe they’ll be of use to you.

I don’t know much about any of these bands but I like these tracks. Talk about some rare vinyl! Some of 7”s these tracks come from are all but impossible to locate. Good thing for all the cool compilation albums out there.

Fanatic, I searched my emails and I can’t find the Fanatic who kindly steered me to a band called Helen and their album The Original Faces. Helen has Liz Harris from Grouper. I went to Discogs and listened to one of the tracks for a minute or two and was totally into it. I got a copy of the LP and the 7” as well. I think those tracks are off the LP. I got a chance to listen to the album a few nights ago. Perfect warm weather listening. I was thinking maybe we should listen to the entire album maybe later in the summer. A track on its own might be good but it could be the best way to check it out would be to listen to it from start to finish.

I think I told you last week I was listening to the A Divine Symmetry album. It’s basically, a remix of David Bowie’s Hunky Dory. Over the last few years, the revisiting of Lodger, Station To Station and The Man Who Sold The World (titled Metrobolist (Nine Songs By David Bowie)) did not convince me they were completely worthwhile projects. I’d like to recommend A Divine Symmetry on LP. The album includes Bombers, which sounds amazing. Actually, the whole album is incredible. If you like the Hunky Dory album, this is absolutely worth checking out.

It’s sad to say goodbye to the great Tina Turner. Also, I think you should know that Mark Adams, bass player for the mighty Saint Vitus passed away a few days ago. What a great band. I’m grateful I got to see them play so many times.

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. It’s 0130 hrs. early on this Saturday. It’s been a not all that interesting week of editing, scanning and proofreading. Thankfully, there’s been a lot of music so it’s been fine.

I just listened to the Taleen Kali Flower Of Life album on vinyl for the first time as it just arrived. The download sounded good but the album really happens when the songs come off the vinyl. Happening!

I had a chance to listen to The Fall Live 1977 RSD LP. I’d already heard the tracks from the CD box set The Fall 1970s recently released on Cherry Red. That’s very much worth checking out. The sound quality of this particular show isn’t the greatest but if you’re an old tape trader like I am, you’re used to somewhat muffled play back. I’m glad this record came out.

A new Lorelle Meets The Obsolete record!

I did a little email traveling and found the red vinyl variant. The one song we’re allowed to hear sounds great. Can’t wait to hear the rest. I’d recommend any of their records without hesitation. Via Bandcamp, you can check out their music and make up your own mind. I think Bandcamp is such a great thing for allowing someone to explore music and not have to face disappointment getting a record they don’t totally like. It’s not always a good idea to take someone’s advice on a vinyl purchase. Getting to hear tracks first is the way to do it.

Fanatic! Presently in Cambridge in the legendary Corn Exchange. Not my first time here but it’s been awhile, for sure. I wanted to get these notes finished and sent off to you as I’m not sure if I’ll be able to tomorrow, when I’ll be on two flights heading back to the USA.

Tonight will be show #44 in a row. This might be the most I’ve ever done without a night off. Strangely, I don’t feel all that worn out. There’s some muscle ache but past that, I wish we were able to start the entire run all over again. Tour returns to Australia for the first time in seven years this June.

I never “look forward” to tours ending but usually, I have some thoughts as to what I’ll try to get up to when I return but this time around, I’m still unable to connect the facts that tonight is the last show and soon we’ll at Heathrow and going on from there.

The last few shows have featured an all-star post-show cast including all three members of Ruts DC, Mr. Segs, Mr. Ruffy and Mr. Leigh, as well as TV Smith, Gaye Advert and Mark Mob. Wow! Everyone seemed to be in good health. Great to see them all.

Of course, the most important thing is we have a great batch of tunes lined up for you. By the time you’re reading this, I should be able to unfold myself from the seated position enough to do my laundry, which shows you how exciting my Saturday night will be.

Fanatic! Hello from Birmingham. We’re parked near the venue, it seems right in the middle of things. Lots of people on the streets. Not the warmest day but still, it’s great to be back here. The shows have been going well and there’s only a few left on this run.

I was hoping to get to more record stores on this tour but the day time schedule is dense with gym and preshow work requirements. We’re so many shows into the tour, I’m not sure if it feels like we only started yesterday or if we’ve been out for a long time. At 51 shows in, it’s just what you’re doing every night.

It’s usually a great audience here and it being a Saturday night, it should be a good time. Birmingham, as you probably know, is the area where Black Sabbath are from.

We have great gathering of tunes for you, of course. Right before I left for this tour, I got some Freak Genes LPs I hadn’t heard but didn’t get the chance to play them, so we’ve only been dipping into two of them. More to come as soon as I get them played. Thanks to Fanatic Brandon for the heads up on the band.

May I recommend the Sick Bags to you. Great music, I think.

Fanatic! Beaming in from Liverpool. All’s well out here. We got to England out of France yesterday and will be in the UK for the rest of this leg. These are the shows that are left.

Right now, we’re finishing a run of 44 shows straight, last night in Bexhill-On-Sea was #30. I prefer a show over a night off any time. I think it makes the shows better with no breaks. We had a tremendous backstage scene last night starring The Shend from the Cravats and Mr. Dave Ruffy of Ruts DC. Good to see them both.

We’ve been working on the upcoming shows and I think you’re going to like them. I have to head into the venue now and get to work on, you guessed it, radio shows! There are two men outside the bus with things for me to sign. Every day they’re out there, I mean every single day. In some countries there’s more than others but they’re always there. I do not get into the venue or go anywhere before I have to deal with them. It’s a bit invasive but you get used to it.

Tonight’s show is a grand gathering of tunes which we hope you will enjoy immensely.

Fanatique! Greetings from Paris. Things have been going well out here. We haven’t seen snow for days and things are warming up.

We’ve been in some great venues on this tour, the sound systems have been really good as well. It seems on all levels on this run everything is an upgrade. Last night, I was in Fribourg, Switzerland at a venue called Fri-Son. I was in the first time on 09-11-87. I haven’t done a show in France for a long time. There used to be a small place here I’d do shows on my own and it was a great time but it went away. I have no idea what to expect for tonight.

These are the remaining shows on this run.

Tomorrow, we’ll be in Amsterdam at the Paradiso, which is across the street from a great record store called the Record Palace, which as far as we can tell, will be open, which is surprising as it will be a Sunday. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to get in there.

We have a great show for you tonight, hopefully it will be a good soundtrack. Remember, we’re only weeks away from Charles M Bogert and his talented constituents!

Fanatic! Hello from Dusseldorf. We’re 30 shows into the year and so far, all’s well. Every afternoon before the show at night, I’m in a backstage area working on upcoming radio shows. In a touring year I have to work ahead. There’s lots of good new releases I just got and some that will be out later this year I was lucky enough to get copies of that I think you’re really going to like. We’ll get into all of it as soon as we get the green light from the labels concerned.

This leg of the tour still has several shows left!

I’m happy to announce more shows are being booked in North America for later in the year. It will be quite awhile until they’re announced but it’s happening. It’s depressing when tours end!

Fanatic. In Berlin, Germany. Happy Fanatic spring! I know it’s not spring officially but as far as my weather vane is concerned, spring has done sprung. On March 1, I was in Denmark and started the spring listening with Dagger & Guitar by Denmark’s Sort Sol.

Shows have been going well. Last night in Hamburg was #23 for the year so far. It’s so great to be back in Germany.

I thought we were going to be encountering some serious weather on this run but it was above freezing every day where we were. Now that it’s March, maybe we’re out of the snow.

In my pre-COVID life, I was in Europe up to five times a year. Last night was the first show I’ve done in Germany since 2018. I’m grateful for being back out here and for a show every night. He’s part of an era of Jazz players who were not only prolific but extraordinarily talented and didn’t seem to waste a drop. Perfect listening for spring.

Fanatic, this news is just coming in to me at this moment as I’m sitting here in the venue. I am sorry to have to tell you this. Spot, the legendary producer and engineer has passed away. He was a one of a kind, brilliant man and a great studio craftsman. Thank you for your concern.

Fanatic! I’m presently in the backstage area of the Kuppelhallen in Stavanger, Norway. The town is a postcard. Blue sky, water, boats, mountains. I’ve never been here before and have no idea if there will be much of an audience tonight. I’m not sure if we’re near any larger towns. Who knows, I might be the only thing on a stage here tonight.

The shows have been going well and we’re very happy to be out here with a show every night. We’ve started the part of this run that has no nights off until the last show in April. It’s how we like it. It’s the nights off that throw me. Another thing that distracts is people in the backstage area talking and this venue seems to have a lot of them so I have to get to work and prep around them.

Fanatic! We’re in Tallinn, Estonia for a show tonight. So far, the weather hasn’t been too cold since we’ve been out here. Reportedly, we’re heading for some low temps in the next few days as we head to Finland.

Things have been going well. Road Manager Ward has found some really interesting records over the last few days. He’s got a small turntable set up so we can actually listen to records on the bus. He found some Estonian Prog records today, pressed in Russia. We just checked out OM by Sven Grünberg.

Our good pal David Thomas of Pere Ubu just sent me files of his new album. I’m waiting to get to an internet connection strong enough to download it. The last few days have been a bit dodgy. I’m hoping for success in the venue tonight. It looks to be coming out in May. We’ll definitely be checking that one out.

Fanatic. Hello from Belgrade, Serbia. The shows have been going well and it’s great to be on the road. I thought we’d be encountering colder weather but so far it hasn’t been so bad. These are the tour dates.

Before shows, I’ve resumed a ritual I started in the final shows of last year. I listen to an Ornette Coleman record. Last night it was the Live At The Golden Circle recordings.

Jet lag is starting to fade. Sometimes it takes longer to get past it. I’ve found that no matter how tired I feel before the show, once I get out there, I’m fine. So far, I’ve done shows in Iceland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Austria. I can’t explain how great it is to be on the move with a show every night.

We have prepared a really cool show for you. We’ve been working on these for weeks.

The great Eric J Lawrence has passed away. He was an essential part of KCRW for many years and a truly good person.

Fanatic! I know we have a long way to go but I’m done with winter! Mainly, I find the cold to be boring. Winter: I’m glad I brought a book. At least there’s a lot of music to listen to!

I’m looking forward to my shows in Europe starting.

There will be a solid month of cold weather, early darkness and chilly backstage areas where I’m going. I think it’s because of decades of conditioning, I’m looking forward to it. In those days, we were getting records by people and bands we didn’t know much about. I’m forgetting how he heard of Joe Jackson. I always thought the Look Sharp! record was really cool.

Fanatic! I hope your weekend has gotten off to a great start. I’ve been getting some good listening in, a lot of 7” records. I have a turntable and some small but sturdy speakers at my desk, so I’ve been checking out a lot of records. 7”s tend to pile up, it’s like mowing the lawn but it’s records.

I don’t know you’re a fan but have you seen all the cool Les Rallizes Denudes releases that have come out over the last few months? Takashi Mizutani is one of the greatest guitar players ever. His music is one of my favorite rabbit holes to jump down. For the most part, the recordings are live tapes of varying quality, so you have to get your ears set for that. The internet has a lot of his material you can listen to. It’s carefully listening as you often have to concentrate through the murk but I think he’s worth every second. This is one of the shows that’s been put on vinyl and sounds better than a lot of the other recordings. His solos are insane.

The next leg of my tour starts soon.

Last week, Billy Idol got a star on the Hollywood walk fame in front of Amoeba. Congratulations, Billy!

We have a great mix tape show for tonight. I’ve been listening to some test pressings of upcoming releases for this year and while it’s not for me to announce a record before a label does, I can say we’ve got some great vinyl to look forward to.

My weekend is going to be for the most part, office bound with a breakout to the gym and maybe even the grocery store. There will also be a lot of music. I’m listening to that Les Rallizes record I mentioned above. SO GREAT!!!

Fanatic! Here we are, the last show of the year. I’m glad the powers that be are allowing our show to happen rather than what went down last week.

Fanatic! As I’m writing to you, I’m listening to assorted Scott Walker tracks. That’s an interesting artist.

We’re coming up on the “holiday season” and all its attendant issues. I got word from one of my bosses from the 7th Floor in the HPC (Human Potential and Control) Division at KCRW there would be no show on 12-24-22 and I was ordered to crack a wine cooler, spark a fat Bentley, and lose my clothes in a public setting on that evening. I’m going to go to a local liquor store to inquire if there’s still such a thing as a “wine cooler” and if I’m able to purchase one without having to also buy an Eagles Greatest Hits album. So, on that night, you’ll have to find your own damn fun.

For the final draft of tonight’s show, I took the tracks to the gym and went on the treadmill for a marathon listening session and I think we’ve got a great gathering of tunes. This is the best and final test of any playlist. If it works like a mix tape, that is to say, if you can just play the tunes in the order they’re placed and it works, then the show is done. If something’s not working, it makes itself known pretty quickly. I trust this method. Like a lot of ancient people, I used to make a lot of mix tapes. The real time nature of it was a cool journey in itself.

My new book Sic sold through very quickly. There are some copies left.

My tour dates for next year.

I think one should invest in traditional holidays as they see fit. I’m not against them at all but the festivity aspect for the most part goes right by me. It does allow a Fanatic to do some deep listening while everyone’s away and that’s working for me.

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. We’ve got a great show lined up for you tonight. I have a lot of tour dates next year, so I’m working on radio shows in advance. I’m doing radio duty literally every day. This isn’t new for me and I must say, I really like having our show on my mind so often. It’s not a burn out at all, if anything, I think it might make the shows better.

Last night being Friday and me being Mr. Excitement, I was at a Starbucks writing about a rare record I’d just retrieved when I noticed a young person (almost everyone’s young to me) sitting at my 2 o’clock wearing a Minor Threat shirt. No way! I asked her how she happened to find out about that band. She told me her father loves Minor Threat and she does as well. I remarked that at this point, this kind of thing is getting passed to another generation. She seemed like she was politely enduring me so I thanked her for answering and took my leave.

I don’t think any person must listen to what came before them, or that there’s “mandatory” music that must be absorbed but I did think it was very cool this music still makes sense to people.

Hours ago, I wrote one Ian Svenonius, telling I really liked his new book Against The Written Word. He wrote back. He’s in France at the moment, of course he is. Comme c’est cool!

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. I’ve been on a lot of highways and in a lot of airports getting things done.

I saw the great Nashville band Snooper play several nights ago. The show I saw apparently will be released as a limited cassette. Their records are great and live they were awesome. I suggest you check them out at the soonest. Here’s the address for the cassette.

Ian MacKaye turned me onto a cool 12” by a band called the Regressive Left. You can check them out here if you want to.

My favorite record of the year: Hammered Hulls -Careening.

When I got back from the first part of the Good To See You Tour in June, I set my office time priorities on making radio shows and editing two books. One of them was the next volume of Stay Fanatic!!! and the other was a collection of recent writing called Sic. It’s the product of about three years of writing. If you liked or were somehow able to endure two books I wrote called Black Coffee Blues and Solipsist, Sic is of that regrettable posture. We were hoping to try to get the book back from the printer and onto our site before the end of the year but figured that wouldn’t be possible. I was able to finish the initial drafts of the book with enough time for Heidi and I to do our final pass so we could send it to Carol who gets the punctuation into shape and off to Dave to do the layout. All of these corners were turned remarkably fast and off the damn thing went to the printer. Very quickly the book was on a truck, headed for Los Angeles. It arrived last week. I signed them all last Tuesday and Wednesday. On Monday, Sic goes on sale. We thought it would be cool to give you the drop. Orders will be filled and dispatched as quickly as Larry Hardy and his hard working staff of “the other guy in the place” can starting bright and early. Here’s the information on that.

I hope you got a chance to check out the Ruts and Panik 12”s Larry and I put out last week. We’re stoked at how well they came out. We’ve already put our next 12” project out to Mikey Young for mastering. We’re super excited about this one.

I’ve given the new Ruts DC album Counterculture? a couple of listens. We start tracks soon. It’s really good. Can’t wait for the vinyl to arrive. They’ve been doing shows with TV Smith. No way!

TV’s album Generation Y just came out on LP. This one might be a bit more challenging to retrieve.

I just finished the new book by Ian Svenonius, Against The Written Word. Amazing

I’m currently listening to Excess by Automatic as I’ve been tasked by my handler at KCRW’s Office of Control and Pacification to write something about the band’s excellent second album. It’s in my top five for the year, absolutely.

Oh, and then of course, there’s tonight’s show. A tremendous gathering of tunes! We hope you dig every moment to the maximum degree.

Fanatic! Happy Saturday to you. Finally, after months of waiting after months of work, literally years in the making, I can tell you about two records Larry Hardy and I have been working on. They were released yesterday. From the master tapes we have generated two 12”s. One is the three song session that informed the first Ruts record with In A Rut and H-Eyes. The third track is an early version of Society, which was the B side of the Babylon’s Burning 7”. The record sounds great. Here are the liner notes, they tell the story.

It seems like years ago I contacted Mr. Segs and Mr. Ruffy and inquired if either Rut had possession of the In A Rut Session tape. The two song 7” with In A Rut and the prophetic H-Eyes had never been reissued since its original three pressing 1979 release.

Rarely does anything in life work out easily so when both replied not only did they not have the tape in their possession, neither had any idea as to its location. I got to work. My pseudo-sleuth supposition was that the band had turned the tape over soon after the passing of Malcolm Owen to Virgin Records for the assemblage of the Grin And Bear It compilation album and it was likely still in the label’s grip.

And this is where the hero of this story and the reason we’re able to bring you this record, a young man named Jason Repantis, comes into the story. Jason works for Universal Music as a senior researcher in the asset and archives management department. His job focuses mainly on finding the best source of audio or video for each project among the vast archive of tapes. It can be for a reissue on vinyl, a remixing session, a video restoration on 4K, a request for an instrumental for a movie or whatever else is required.

Via email, Jason and I got to conversing as to where the tape could be. At one point, Jason told me he had located a tape that was dated 1980 with a Town House sticker on the front. The In A Rut Session happened in 1979 but Grin was a 1980 project so the tape could have very well been relabelled by an engineer. Jason gave the tape a closer look and confirmed it was the Fair Deal Studio reel with In A Rut, H-Eyes and an early version of Society.

I asked Jason how he came upon the tape.

“Finding this tape involved a lot of research. Reading as much as possible online, contacting people out of the blue and of course browsing Ruts tapes from the archive. When I finally came across it, the first thing I saw on its box was that it contained the slower version of Society. I knew then that this was the right tape and the rest of the information matched as well.”

The tape had been found. We can report that this was the easy part! Prying it loose from Virgin was going to be a multi-month extraction operation single-handedly executed by the resourceful Jason.

“In order for the tape to be returned to the band, I had to present all the information to EMI's legal and business affairs department. After they reviewed the case as well as the agreement with the band they confirmed that this tape can be returned.”

After months, the tape was released and it is now safely archived with me. We provided a high quality transfer to the very capable Mikey Young for mastering and here you have it, all three songs from the session, cut from the master tape.

Make no mistake: this is a complete victory. Justice! It could have been that the tape would have sat in the guts of Virgin for the rest of the century and there would be no reissue. The tape is back in control of the remaining Ruts and their great music is now yours to enjoy.

Larry Hardy and I are honored to be a part of this multi-continent allied effort to bring you this record. As lifelong Ruts fans, all involved are righting a wrong. Without Jason, we wouldn’t have gotten here.

Fanatic! I hope the week was great. Engineer X and I have been working on the last of the November shows and are now pushing into December and beyond.

Not that you would find this interesting but we were told my new book, Sic, was held up at the printer because they couldn’t get the correct paper stock. We just got a message that not only did they get the paper, but the book was printed and on a truck heading to Los Angeles. It could be there within days. Very exciting.

Fanatic. I hope you had a great week. I finished the shows for the year last Saturday night. I wish the dates went to the end of the year.

Sorry about not posting the notes in time last week. The jet lag effect of being in Honolulu was not subtle. The shows were good but sleep was elusive.

Since I’ve been back I’ve been listening to a lot of vinyl. Des Demonas, Joy Division, Iggy, Shove, Delivery, The Fall, Boris to name but a few. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. The cooling temperatures makes me want to be on the road but since I can’t do that, I’m going for some serious vinyl immersion and had workouts to neutralize restlessness. I did 114 shows this year which is pretty good but I wish I was at a venue right now, getting ready to get out there.

Fanatic. I hope you’ve been doing great and listening to a lot of music. I’m about to leave for the last three shows of the year, which will be in Honolulu. I’ll come back from that and get back to work on things at the office and get ready to sign copies of my new book Sic, which we will put on sale as soon as they return from the printer, hopefully before the end of the year.

I wanted to give you a heads up on two 12”s Larry Hardy of In The Red Records and I have put together which Larry will be unleashing next month. It was almost the entire year to get them back from the pressing plant. These two projects, a long time in the making, were cut from the original masters, our versions sonically out do the originals and we added unreleased tracks from the sessions to both. Mastered by Mikey Young, previously on 7”, recut onto 12”, they sound awesome. Okay, the lead up was pretty good, who's on the records? Not wanting to put the cart in front of the horse, I’ll probably tell you in the show notes for 11-19-22. They will be out for Black Friday on 11-25-22. We reckon you’re going to be extremely stoked. We’ve sent copies of the records to the artists and I sent one of each to Ian MacKaye. I’m waiting to hear about what he thinks.

Kid Congo’s book Some New Kind Of Kick is SO GOOD! Very happy he put his amazing story on a page. Well written and what a life. Here’s more info.

Even if it’s just me saying it, I do believe we’ve struck a great balance of new and old as we try to provide you with a cool mix tape for a Saturday night in October.

Fanatic, in our second hour, we’ve got a great bit of concept listening. We’re going to check out the Eden Studios sessions of Joy Division. One of the many interesting aspects of this grouping of songs is they were produced by Martin Rushent. If that name is familiar, you might remember him as the man who did the great majority of the recordings with Buzzcocks during their amazing United Artists period. How cool to hear the band without Martin Hannett an with the “other” Martin. The following quote is from the joydiv.org site.

Fanatic! I hope the month of months has been treating you well. I’ve been doing a lot of backstage listening sessions before I head out for the show. I’m off the road for a couple of weeks, so I’m looking forward to getting the record player going.

Tonight, we have another bit of concept listening. If you see below, we’re checking out The Idiot, the great from start to finish Iggy Pop/David Bowie collaboration, not to mention a favorite of the McGinty. This album, like Low, is for me at least, perfect October listening. It’s great at any time of course but there’s something about the cool temperatures that makes it really work for me. I've been listening to Perverted By Language by The Fall pretty much every day. I can't stop!

I was lucky enough to be able to see the new documentary on Don Letts called Rebel Dread. I watched it twice I liked it so much. Here are two listings for the premier if you happen to be in these zones.

Fanatic! I’m sitting on the tour bus in Fort Smith AR. We actually had some fall weather for a few days but that’s over with and we’re back into the heat. I had a night off recently, odd for my tours. I went to Dallas, TX to check out Shepard Fairey’s new batch of work called Backward Forward. Amazing as always. I did Shepard’s intro, Chuck D and DJ Lord handled the music.

Fanatic, easily my favorite album of the year is Careening by Hammered Hulls. I got the vinyl a few weeks ago and it’s excellent from start to finish. I’m happy for the band to have done such a great piece of work. Recorded at Inner Ear, produced by Ian MacKaye and on Dischord. We’ll be playing every track of this album on our show. Be looking for this one to ship in late October.

Fanatic! I hope your week was great. I’ve been listening to a lot of Joy Division and repeated plays of Scary Monsters. I just got my copy of A Foul Form, the new Osees album and finally, the the new Party Dozen album arrived. I forget when the preorder was but it seems to me it was a long time ago. Tonight we listen to a track from their Sub Pop 7” release.

I really like the new Automatic album. Another one of those cases where the digital files sound fine but the vinyl is a surprisingly good upgrade, same thing with the Liz Lamere record.

I got an email from Atsuo of Boris. He said the shows are going great. Do not miss this band!

I’ve been working on new shows to be ready for all the tour dates I have coming up. Over the next several weeks, there will be all the bands I just listed plus a lot more. I think they’re all great. Music is really good right now and there’s lots to look forward to.

Fanatic! It’s our last show for the summer! I know autumn doesn’t “officially” start until weeks from now but as far as this Fanatic is concerned, August 31 is the last day of summer. Enjoy the frogs because this is the last of them for the year.

At this time of the year, I always ask myself if I listened to enough music over the summer. Music sounds great all the time of course but for me, hot weather is the best time to listen. I think I did a good job of getting a lot of records played. I was on tour for a good part of the summer but I made up for it over the last several weeks.

My copy of the new Young Prisms album Drifter just arrived. Sounds great!

My Liz Lamere Keep It Alive album just arrived. I’ll play it as soon as possible.

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. I’ve been getting some good listening done but I must say, I’m a bit behind as office work has me tied up for a good part of the day and sometimes the night as well. My European tour dates are starting to come in, which makes me excited. It’s literally been years since I’ve been there.

Remember that cool band Automatic we listened to? They made that great album Signal. I was about to put a track from the album into one of our upcoming shows and I went to Discogs in the off chance there might be any new releases and I found they had made a new album called Excess. I got a copy and played it a few days ago. I think it’s great. We’ll get tracks started soon. Here’s info.

Fanatic! I hope you’ve been having a great July. I’ve been in edit and scan mode, working on a few different projects.

Cool album alert - Liz Lamere’s new album Keep It Alive on In The Red Records is out. Liz is the wife and longtime collaborator of the great Alan Vega. We’ll start playing tracks next week.

Also on In The Red, the new Dion Lunadon album Beyond Everything is set for release. It’s really good. We’ll be starting tracks on that one soon too.

I’ve been slowly catching up on new releases that arrived while I was out, as well as checking out all my warm/hot weather favorites. Listening to music is great all year long, of course but this is my favorite season for having the tunes on.

I’m hoping to have some newly discovered Joe Meek recordings for next month. I’m waiting to hear back, also, that cool band from Georgia, Upchuck has a new album and the label has made radio friendly version for us so we’ll be getting tracks from that happening soon. I just got it but haven’t had the chance to hear it yet. Also, an interesting compilation album called Love Hurts on Flightless that has some great tracks on it, we’ll get into that as well.

We hope you’ve been digging the shows. We’re going for a cool mix tape concept, throwing in as much new stuff as we can, along with some of our summer favorites. Solid Fanatic listening!

Fanatic! It’s 0154 hrs. I just finished work on next week’s show. I hope you have something planned for the “holiday weekend” that won’t cost too much. I’ll be working straight through but at least I’ll have a soundtrack.

Fanatic! The frogs are back in town. It must be summer. It is as far as this Fanatic is concerned. I’m beaming in to you from the parking lot of the venue in Colorado Springs, CO. Shows have been going great and if anything, it seems to be ending before it even started. It seems like a week ago we were in Michigan and now we’re over fifty shows in.

Tonight we start our summer listening cycle with Charles M. Bogert & Associates and bullfrogs in the background whenever I’m on the mic to make things as ridiculous as possible.

In the small backstage areas I’m afforded in the venues I’m in, I’ve started a re-immersion of summer listening. Black Tambourine, Flin Flon, Unrest, UK Subs, Bratmobile and others. I’m going into the venue soon and will set up my portable system and get into it. I’m grateful to have an audience waiting for me every night. It’s been three years waiting to get back out here.

I hope you’ve been getting some good listening happening. I spend a lot of time in the gym and have been enjoying the treadmill sessions with the earphones. We have an excellent selection of tunes for you, hopefully you’ll find it all to your liking.

Fanatic! Things are much better now. I’m on a bus with about eighty shows waiting for me. I know last week, I mentioned as far as I was concerned, it was spring. Easy to say writing from one of the USA’s warmer regions. This Fanatic Spring Theory holds no water if your environment is cold. Currently, it’s 25F where I am in Michigan. I think spring would be a hard sell here. Fair enough. I just can’t look at the calendar and think it’s still winter but that’s just me.

My first show is tonight. Here’s tour information.

I spent a good part of the day signing copies of Stay Fanatic!!! Vol. 3. We loaded them onto the bus while snow was falling. This is where my whole spring idea fell over.

Fanatic Tim recommended this band Self improvement to me. I think they’re very cool. We’ll start getting tracks into the show soon.

This is another very cool record. It’s Violetta Del Conte-Race from Primo and Jake Robertson from Alien Nosejob. They’re called Modal Melodies. The album is coming out on Anti Fade and it’s really smart. Pay attention to Anti Fade, they’re always up to something good.

Fanatic! I haven’t checked but I bet it’s not spring as far as the calendar is concerned. It is for me. I broke out the Rites Of Spring album, the Rain 12” and The Infotainment Scan LP to get things going.

I see that people have received their Dischord box sets. Pretty great, right?! Finally. Ian and Dischord have hit a high note with this one. I was going to recommend the new green vinyl Embrace LP reissue but it’s already gone. I love that album.

I wanted to tell you this, so you don’t miss out on an opportunity you might want to take advantage. The 180g reissue of Eric Dolphy’s Out To Lunch LP sounds amazing. I’ve played this record so many times and the other night when I had this new pressing on, it was to be amazed all over again.

Fanatic. Mark Lanegan passed away a few days ago. That’s a loss. I think the last time I talked with him was when we were doing shows at the same venue years ago.

Fanatic. On February 9, the great Betty Davis passed away as did Ian McDonald, a founding member of King Crimson and also a member of Foreigner.

My Cate Le Bon album arrived. Looking forward to hearing it. I just heard another great album that will be coming out later this year. It’s for the label and the band to announce but it’s going to leave some marks for sure. More to look forward to.

There are some other albums that are set to come out soon-ish but I see that the labels haven’t announced so until they do, I won’t say anything. I have the records, they are great and we will check them out when we get the all clear to turn them loose. I reckon if I can’t find them on Bandcamp, then I can’t talk about them. Larry Hardy and I have three we’re working on at the moment that we think you’re really going to like. We’re in line with everyone else, waiting to get the records pressed. Some cool stories attached to these records as well.

Has your Boris W album arrived yet, so we can exhale and say that we’ve heard it? A couple of the variants got here yesterday, so I guess the LP is out there. I’ve only played it a few times so far. It’s so different than NO. Another great Boris album.

We have a great line-up of tunes for tonight. I went for a mix tape feel. I figure it would be good for cold weather.

Fanatic! I hope your week was great. I’ve been working on various writing projects as well as radio shows and keeping in contact with labels for when to start playing tracks from new releases. Fanatic! I hope your new year is going great so far. My European tour dates canceled as one country after another fell out. I should be in Berlin right now. It’s not for me to complain, I think pretty much everyone has been put through quite a lot over the last two years.

New Sweet Knives is moving out!

Did you get your copy of the new Boris album called W? I got the Levitation pressing. Another awesome one from this great band.

This new Ty Segal LP is really great.

I’m glad the “holiday season” is over with, I want to get on with things. There are some great records coming out this year. Lots to look forward to.

Fanatic! I’m glad we’re still here. I hope you had a good time over the last week. It’s something having shows directly on the holiday, two in a row. I don’t know what you’re up to this weekend and don’t know if you’ll even have a chance to check out this show until later in the week or month but I hope you do!

A great mix of tunes we have lined up for you which we hope you will enjoy. I’m in a dark room, scanning images for Stay Fanatic!!! Vol. 4. These books are a lot of work to complete but I like doing it.

The excellent Outer Battery label has just released a new Fake Names 7” in four color variants. I checked out the test pressing last night. Sounds great.

Alicja Trout just contacted me and said her new Alicja Pop album Howlin’ is on streaming platforms.

Phil Todd aka Ashtray Navigations has a new recording out called Cabin Exterior. Really good.
