Borderline Nosy: Recent Episodes

Kofi Afari

They say life begins at 30, but that doesn't mean things from our past don't try to sneak their way back onto the main stage.

Borderline Nosy is a show hosted by Dr. Kofi Afari, an everyday guy trying to make the best of his 30's by getting deep and meaningful with his friends and family.

It's a show unpacking topics that seem to get more complicated with age and yet ever more essential to get right. Kofi speaks to people in his circle of influence with the hope that some listeners may realise they are not alone in their journey while also exposing others to perspectives they may never have encountered before.

With lots of fun and laughter along the way, Borderline Nosy asks the questions, so you don't have to.

Chapter 4: Marriage

If you're going to do something for a long time, it's always ideal to start on the right foot (versus the left foot :D). Kojo and Danae have only been at this for 3 years now but their foundation is so solid, the only direction they're destined for is up!

Chapter 3: Sibling relationships

They say 2 is better than 1...three is company etcetera. There is definitely a part of our personality that is shaped by our relationship with our siblings. Sometimes looking back at how we grew up with these people can shine light on why we are who we are today.

Chapter 2: Careers

They say the average millennial will change their career up to 7 times. After I came to terms with the fact that I too am a millennial, I realised that this is the reality for many of us out there in the work field. Chad is a prime example of an evolving career that is anything but stagnant. This lawyer-businessman talks about being a stickler for the rules and changing the world at the same time!

Chapter 2: Careers

Dream big, be patient and stay creative. My mother always says "Never despise small or humble beginnings." It's never too late or too early to add something to your career or workplace that could potentially benefit many more people than oneself.

Obo and Tima are back talking us through where they are now in their careers but, I think more importantly, where they aspire to be.

Chapter 2: Careers

They're back!! Danae and Kojo bless the airwaves once again with their sound vocals and unsurprising wisdom. When walking the road less trodden, I think it's so important to periodically regroup and refocus. All the uncertainties and external voices and frustrations can easily distract you from the prize and make it feel like it's getting further and further away.

Today we talk about Kojo and Danae's paths to unconventional careers plus the excitement and anxiety they bring to life.

Chapter 2: Careers

Life is complicated. The different facets of life can never really be placed in a vacuum but end up intertwined one way or another. The careers we end up in are often influenced by issues that really have no place in these decisions and it's important to dismantle them before we can put it all back together.

Sara talks about the path she took to becoming a data scientist for the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services in Canada and the various experiences in her life, both lived and observed, that got her there.

Chapter 2: Career

They call it a "career path", and for good reason. It's a path that isn't always straightforward, sometimes full of unwanted surprises and sometimes I wish I could just ask Siri to point me in the right direction!

Our careers are a big part of who we are. When you meet someone new, the order of questions tends to be 1. What's your name? 2. What do you do? So it is important to make educated and wise decisions regarding these paths.

I talk a little bit about my journey in the medical field and shine some insight on some of the things I went through to get to where I am today. Then we chat with my good friend Michael who had started on the same path as myself, only to veer off into something different, unexpected and perfectly suited for him. The options are plentiful, some of them you have to learn about, others you have to make for yourself.

Chapter 2: Careers            I think one of the keys to longevity in a career is remembering that you are not your job. It is important hold on to the other parts of who you are that makes you a whole person. Medicine is one of those fields that I think this mindset is very essential. In this episode, we hear from 7 young doctors, featuring our token pharmacist and plumber, and how they made it through their career journeys!

Chapter 1: Identity         Who we are is a product of our environment. The beauty of growing, maturing and being human is that we have the ability to change...to adapt...to be better. Sally, Bennie and Jessica grew up as black girls in a small Italian town and could have let their experiences keep them as narrow-minded as the people around them. Through travel, exploration and progressive parents, they have branched out to be the world-changers they are today.

Chapter 1: Identity                 Unless you live under a rock, there will always be people or things that influence who you end up becoming (Even the Castaway was influenced by Wilson to some extent). The good thing is as we get older, we can hopefully develop a better filter and actively avoid things that keep us from growing. As a teenager, I definitely didn't appreciate the positive influence my parents had on me and only realised later how much of who they are has moulded who I am now (the good and the bad haha). Today my mom talks about her journey from glory to glory and how hardship, travel and survival made her the amazing woman she is today.

Chapter 1: Identity

The journey of being comfortable with my complicated national identity has been a long one. Speaking with Tima and Obo helped me realise how far I've come in loving my history and embracing my difference. Amongst many things, we talk about the priceless values of travel and exploration and the idea that sometimes standing out can help one appreciate themselves even more.

Chapter 1: Identity

The human race has been moving from home to new home since the beginning of time. Though these days, it just takes a little less time and effort, moving can still have a huge impact on one's identity. Peggy and Harry sit down with me to talk about before and after their big decision to leave the land of their ancestors and invest in a new land for their descendants.

Chapter 1: Identity

These days, when it comes to where we're from, what you see isn't always what you get. The ease of travel, immigration, greener pastures and limitless skies means that populations that were once bound to a specific geographical area are on the move and finding new homes.

This episode explores how my cousins, 3 beautiful women and products of the African Diaspora are holding onto their Ghanaian heritage, while laying claim to the greener pastures their parents sought out for them.

Chapter 1: Identity

Kojo and Danae talk about the differing sources of motivation they had growing up and how they shaped their identity. One was an overachiever, the other an underdog. One was under pressure to prove, the other under pressure to thrive. Now, as they navigate who they are as married folk, they have realised that their motivations have changed for the better. Keep listening to hear what they have found to be their source for success

You have your own experiences, trials and triumphs. I hope this show encourages you to keep going, knowing that others have gone through the same things and succeeded...

Or it gives you ideas to make the next stage of life a bit smoother, more adventurous, more whatever

Or it broadens your horizons and allows you to experience perspectives on issues you would never get from your own current circle of influence

Most of all, I hope you feel welcomed!
