It’s the holiday season, and we are once again sending out our annual Holiday Letter Campaign. Every year we put together a letter that is sent out to all our supporters. In the spirit of the season, we ask them to keep us in mind when considering where their potential holiday donations may go toward. On this Episode of Changing Lives, we’re going to hear some testimonials from people who have had a loved one spend their final days at Hospice Quinte, read by some of our staff and volunteers.

How do they qualify? How are people selected? On this episode of Changing Lives, we’re going to talk to Hospice Quinte’s Clinical Care Coordinator Lisa Boomhour to learn more about the admissions process and how you or your loved one can come to Hospice Quinte’s Stan Klemencic Care Centre.

One of the hardest parts of the grieving process after losing a loved one is that sometimes, basic small talk can remind you of them. From a co-worker asking how they are doing not knowing they’ve died, to a casual acquaintance trying to learn about your family or other friends, there are plenty of ways that someone may accidentally bump the wound of your grief. On this episode of Changing Lives, we’re going to help you learn how to break the news to people outside of your immediate circle.

Hospice care can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. For those receiving it, it means having the ability to have the best possible care at the end of their lives. For their loved ones, it means respite and reassurance that they are helping out in the best way possible. But what does it mean to those providing it?

Caregivers work tirelessly to ensure the person they’re caring for is as safe and healthy as they can make them. What is that person to do?

In this episode, we’re going to go over what happens if you die alone in your home and give you some tips and precautions you can put in place to make sure you’re not forgotten when you die, or even prevent the situation from happening in the first place.

There are oftentimes traditions or events that a person would be involved in that they are no longer around for, and that changes the dynamic of the whole celebration. Or even if it was just their presence that is missed, the first holiday following a death will be different than normal.

Most people tend to avoid having end of life care discussions. Who wants to talk about dying when talking about living is much easier and exciting! It’s much easier to envision a peaceful death where one dies quietly in their sleep. This scenario although idyllic, is not the norm and choices about end-of-life care often happen in the moment and can be very stressful for family members who must make life-altering decisions with little input or information from their critically ill loved one.

Hospice care has a long history spanning over 1,500 years. Its origins can be traced back to fourth-century Rome when a compassionate woman named Fabiola established a place to care for the sick and dying. This concept of hospice was further embraced by the Catholic Church, which continued to provide care to the poor and sick in hospices throughout the following centuries. Notably, hospice care during this time wasn't limited to individuals with terminal illnesses.

What would happen if you were diagnosed with a terminal illness? Where and how would you like to live out the rest of your life? If you and your family have decided that you wish to die at home, then accessing the proper resources and services will lessen some of the potential strain of caregiving. You may desire to have an in-home hospice visiting volunteer to provide you and your family with palliative care support. A discussion with your physician, Home and Community Care Coordinator or hospital Patient-Flow Coordinator can determine if a referral to the in-home hospice visiting service would be suitable for you. Everyone who experiences loss will grieve differently, and children of course are no exception. The primary difference in adult versus child grief is the way in which the grieving process is demonstrated, leaving adults who care for grieving children at times confused and worried that somehow their child isn’t grieving normally. The way children respond to death is different from adults which makes sense since their experience with death is more limited, and the ability to think in the abstract isn’t quite developed. It’s common for people to experience a change in their sleeping pattern in the days, weeks and months following the loss of a loved one. If you were a caregiver prior to the loss, then this sleeplessness can be intensified. People who are grieving may have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. On the other end of the spectrum, grievers may find it difficult to stay awake. Sleep patterns can even fluctuate between the two extremes: some days the sleep never comes, while other days, it’s hard to get up. Find out more about grief and sleep in this week's Changing Lives podcast.

Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz said it best – “there’s no place like home”. For most of us, home is where we want to be. It’s where our creature comforts are, where we feel most content and happy, and it’s where our friends and family come to visit. It’s natural, then, that some individuals who are experiencing their end of life want to spend their last days and moments at home. Learn more about what's involved with preparing for a death at home in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

Many non-profit organizations could not survive without the assistance provided by loyal volunteers. In fact, a report by Volunteer Canada revealed that Baby Boomers and Senior Adults provided more than 1 billion volunteer hours in 2010! Clearly volunteering provides non-profits and charities a wealth of expertise, which allows these organizations to provide a multitude of services for free or a very low cost to their communities. However, the benefits of volunteering runs both ways and seniors can also gain many rewards from their volunteer efforts. Find out more in this week's Changing Lives podcast.

Even though caregiving is often thought of as a role assumed primarily by women, a recent survey found that 44% of caregivers are men. Like their female counterparts, approximately 3.4 million male caregivers face tremendous challenges as they simultaneously try to balance work and raise a family with the physical and emotional demands of helping an ailing or aging loved one. In 2020 Hospice Quinte introduced two new programs – Bereavement Companionship and Caregiver Companionship. Often, people who are caring for someone with a terminal illness don’t have the time or energy to come to a support group. The Caregiver Companionship program allows caregivers to schedule a weekly call with a compassionate volunteer that can be done at a time that works for them without leaving their home. While many people who are grieving find a benefit from support groups – some people are more private and prefer to have one on one conversations about their loss. The Bereavement Companion program answers that need. Empathetic volunteers are matched with people who are grieving the loss of a loved one for weekly supportive telephone calls. Hospice palliative care is made up of two parts – hospice care and palliative care. Palliative, or comfort, care is appropriate for people of any age and at any stage of a serious illness. Hospice care is generally for those who have twelve or fewer months to live and who are no longer receiving active curative treatment. Hospice palliative care combines those two philosophies. Hospice Quinte has been delivering quality hospice palliative care in our communities, at no charge, since 1985. As those with illness face multiple losses and grief, and adjustments to a different life routine, so do caregivers. Caregivers may face losses such as the loss of a job, broken or challenging relationships, and having to learn to adjust to new caregiving routines and skills. Caregiving is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding, yet demanding, jobs a person will ever have. Listen to this week's podcast for some tips to help ease the burden of caregiving.

Dying is a part of living. We will all experience it ourselves and we will all lose someone we love and experience the grief and bereavement that comes with that loss. Even though it is such a fundamental part of life – it seems to be a topic that many people have a hard time talking about. Because it is such a difficult topic – we tend to avoid mentioning it at all. That has created what many call a “death denying” culture. Find out how you can confront our death denying culture in this week's podcast.

When asked, most people say they want to spend their last days at home. And while supports for home death are improving, sometimes a family finds they need help twenty-four hours a day. In that case, a hospice residence might be the best option. A hospice residence is a home away from home where people come to live their final days. According to Statistics Canada, in 2018 an estimated 25 percent of the population provided some form of long-term caregiving to a loved one.

Maybe you have heard of a birth doula, but have you heard of a death doula? Just as a birth doula advocates for and cares for mothers in their pregnancy and birth journey, death doulas advocate for and care for the dying in their final days and death journey. A doula’s ultimate purpose is to be present, to listen, and to attend to non-medicinal needs. While the health care team attends to needs of the body, a death doula attends to the needs of the spirit and mind, and to the practical needs of both the client and their loved ones. Caregiving is often a physically, not to mention emotionally demanding job. Caregivers that are carrying too much responsibility may miss personal appointments, ignore personal medical concerns, eat unhealthily due to lack of time or appetite, overuse alcohol, lose sleep, have fewer social connections, experience depression, and feel resentfulness and annoyance. For those who are aging, this can have an even greater negative impact on your health and general well-being than on younger caregivers. Find out more about the demands of caregiving on older adults in this week's podcast.

When asked, most people say they want to spend their last days at home. And while supports for home death are improving, sometimes a family finds they need help twenty-four hours a day. At Hospice Quinte we meet, and talk to, a lot of people who have become family caregivers for loved ones who are facing a terminal illness. We hear a lot of stories and many of these involve emotions such as sadness, hope, exhaustion, happiness, grace, despair, longing, love, and even anger. Yet, perhaps, the common emotion we hear about is guilt. A few of the phrases we hear: "I am guilty of not being 100 percent present", "I feel guilty for being upset and wishing things were different", "I feel guilty about wishing I could run away sometimes" and "I am guilty of rushing through a day so I can have some alone time". Learn more about guilt and caregiving in this week's podcast.

In 2015, the Quality of Death Index, which rates end-of-life quality in eighty different countries, found Canada to be ranked in 11th place overall. This is a decent position to be in, but we could be offering better end-of-life care to Canadians. So, if palliative care is not where it should be in Canada, this begs the question: how do the majority of Canadians wish to die and how do they end up dying? Hospice care has been practiced for over 1,500 years. The creation of the “modern day” hospice is credited to Dame Cicely Saunders who, in England during the 1950’s, realized that managing pain at end of life was not enough. She recognized that there were psychological, social and spiritual aspects of the dying process that needed to be addressed as well. Be sure to check out this week's Changing Lives Podcast to learn more about Dame Saunders and the history of hospice care.

Losing a loved one is devastating, and unfortunately, grief offers us no timeline. Each step of the journey must be taken one day at a time. Early on in your grief journey, it might feel as though everything has completely stopped; thoughts of “growth” and “healing” from this significant loss seem inconceivable. But, as time passes, the days become a little bit easier to get through, you get a little more rest at night. There are fewer tears and you begin to experience the joys of life again, but grief is a funny thing. For some individuals, starting to feel okay again, while still grieving the loss of a loved one, can feel wrong. Learn more in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

Nobody ever wants to think about dying or the death of someone they love, let alone have a conversation about it. Talking about death and dying is hard, because we've never really been taught to talk about death or how to appropriately bring up the subject. Learn more about how to start a conversation about death in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

Being a parent is rewarding, but also very challenging. When it happens for the first time, you realize that you are now responsible for much more than your own life and well-being. And whether you have one child or several, you are forever changed in that your main focus becomes a child who both needs you and depends on you. When someone close to you dies, it can make things more difficult and even more challenging. Death can be a difficult subject at the best of times, but for parents…dealing with grief is only one of your many tasks. So how do you do it? After the loss of a loved one, it’s not unusual for an individual to experience a wide range of feelings and emotions. Grief is a completely natural response to loss. It’s the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. The more significant the loss, the more intense your grief will be. It’s only human to not want others to see our grief, to feel like we must deal with our grief ourselves or that our grief is too personal to share. But whether we want to admit it or not, we all need some kind of support system to help us when we’re grieving. Learn about some of the benefits of attending a bereavement support group in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

One of the questions people ask the most about losing a loved one is, “when does it get better or easier?”. The real answer is different for everyone, because no one grieves in exactly the same way, and there is no timeline for bereavement. Grief never ends, but it does go through changes. The first few weeks and months are filled with arrangements and notifications. You deal with shock and then very strong reactions ranging from anger and sadness to fear and denial. You don’t know what the future will bring, because nothing will ever be the same again. Surprisingly, one of your biggest challenges may be what happens in the second year of your loss. Learn more about grieving in the second year of a loss in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

Death is often a difficult subject for adults to discuss, but it becomes even harder when we need to talk to children about it. Often when there’s bad news to share, our first instinct is to protect children from the pain by withholding information. We might choose to use words that we think will make it easier for them to grasp, when in all reality we’re making it even harder for children to understand what’s really going on when someone close to them dies. Learn tips for how to talk to children about death in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

Caregivers are individuals who provide ongoing care and assistance, without pay, to family members and friends who need support due to physical, cognitive or mental health conditions. Many caregivers don’t self-identify as being a “caregiver”. They often see it as part of being a spouse, child, parent or in-law, but once the role of caregiver is explained, they ultimately understand the importance of their role in their loved one’s health care. When taking on the role of caregiver, it's important to know some of the challenges you'll be faced with and what support is available to you. Discover more in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

There are many ways that a family or an individual can be faced with an “end-of-life diagnosis”. We commonly think of Cancer, Heart Disease and other conditions or diseases that show obvious physical symptoms, and can progress quite rapidly in some cases. People with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia don’t immediately fit the same mold, and that can make it harder to acknowledge and meet their needs. Learn how to provide appropriate hospice palliative care to individuals facing Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

Death has become a very difficult subject for many to discuss in modern society. It’s a part of every person’s life, and yet we don’t receive much education in that area, and many people find it challenging to even find someone to talk to about it, when the time comes. If you are a caregiver for someone who is dying, it can be even more emotionally draining. Being confronted with the death of a loved one challenges our own feelings of helplessness and grief as we are forced to take a longer look at our own mortality. It tests our belief in a sense of order and natural progression in the world around us. It also makes us ask meaningful and sometimes frightening questions about who we are, and what will happen in the days to come. Learn more about how to talk to someone who is dying in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

When someone you love has died, it raises all kinds of issues and questions that can be difficult to process. After the initial period of shock there is often a period of strong and conflicting emotional responses which include anger, sadness, guilt, denial and depression. At first, there are usually people around you to help you with the first few steps on this new journey. The obvious and pressing needs of memorials and tributes consume the first few days and weeks, and rally people together as family and friends. Then, one day, it seems like something changes and people resume their day-to-day lives. For the person who is still grieving, there are resources like bereavement and support groups, but that isn’t where the work ends…that is where it truly begins. Grief can come from many sources, and not all of them are either obvious, or predicable. While many families suffer as they deal with health issues and stress related to cancer, heart disease or dementia, others have no time to consider how their lives may be about to change. Every day, people die from accidents, collisions, violent criminal actions, unforeseen medical issues, or suicide. In these cases, there is no time to reflect or to say goodbye to the people we have lost. Learn more about dealing with grief after a sudden or traumatic loss in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

The ongoing 24 hour news cycle is constantly churning out new and more graphic material every hour of every day, with most of it being seen by some as disturbing and even devastating. When someone dies, their loved ones are left to deal with a seemingly endless series of arrangements and events. Services and memorials take centre stage in the first few days and weeks, but they are just the first of many steps to putting someone’s “house in order”. That phase can seem overwhelming in and of itself, especially if you have never had to orchestrate a public event, post notices, and contact extended family and friends in a short period of time. After that initial marathon, you still have to deal with items like bill payments, bank accounts, wills and estates, but the modern landscape includes an entire new dimension that most people don’t even consider…cyberspace. In the 21st century, the new question is “how do you deal with someone’s digital legacy?” Find out more about how to prepare for your own digital legacy in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

Hospice palliative care isn’t something most people like to talk about – or may even know about. Find out more about hospice palliative care in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

The death of a family member or friend can be very difficult, and not just for the person who experienced that loss directly. Grief can take the form of shock, anger, sadness, depression and a wide range of other emotions. Each person is different, and how they will deal with that grief is also very different, and may be difficult to understand for their other friends and family members from time to time. For co-workers, it can seem even more confusing, as you aren’t necessarily as close to the bereaved person and may not discuss feelings or emotional responses on a regular basis. Now imagine you are that person’s employer, and you will see that it can be even harder to provide the support that they need. Find out more about supporting employees who are grieving in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be difficult for any person, and none of us can be fully prepared for the situation. The shock and sadness are often accompanied by a diverse and surprisingly broad range of emotions as we deal with friends, relatives, sometimes co-workers, and eventually our own feelings and the truth of what has happened and what it means for the future. In the short-term, it is often accompanied by a number of gatherings and highly-public expressions of warmth and support which include visitation and the funeral service. They are sometimes rushed and often chaotic as few people are experienced in organizing such events, and even fewer go to them on a regular basis. And while it can be overwhelming for just about anyone, it presents some unique and very daunting challenges for the people who would describe themselves as introverts. Learn more in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

One of the most difficult things to deal with in the aftermath of a significant loss is the damage it does to your support system. The loved one who has died leaves behind many people, including you, who are dealing with their absence in several different and meaningful ways. Some people that you have known for years or even decades may become more distant, as they have difficulty dealing with your new reality….and in many ways… the new YOU. Somewhat surprisingly, however, there is another group of people which has the exact opposite reaction. There are many ways to refer to these people, but some just call them your “found family”. These are the people who unexpectedly step up to help you out in your moments of need. Find out more about "found" family in this week's Changing Lives Podcast.

Grieving is hard enough, but when people are experiencing grief that they feel they cannot openly share, it becomes even harder. Some people feel like they are unable to grieve the loss of someone, or something, that was very important to them because they think their feelings of grief will make others uncomfortable. Sometimes people are worried about sharing their grief with others because it will upset them. When someone feels like they need to hide their grief – they are experiencing a distinct kind of grief called disenfranchised grief. Find out more in this week's podcast.

Everyone knows that exercise is good for you, but it’s not often the first thing people think of as a tool for helping them cope with grief. When we think of people who are grieving our minds don’t immediately call up images of people running, swimming, playing hockey, or taking part in a group exercise class. Exercise isn’t just good for your body, it’s also good for your mind. Find out how exercise might help during grief in this week's Changing Lives podcast.

Canada’s first National Bereavement Day is on November 21, 2018. The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association made the move to create this day because they believe that Canadians need to know more about the resources available to them before, during, and after their loved one’s end-of-life journey, and we agree. When a loved one has a terminal illness, the bereavement journey often starts before their loved one dies.
