In episode #204, Associate Professor of Economics at Haverford College, Carola Binder, discusses two papers -- Technopopulism and Central Banks, and Stuck in the Seventies: Gas Prices and Consumer Sentiment. Both papers give credence to the financial markets and economic policy as of late. If you enjoyed this episode and would like to hear from Carola Binder on the show again, please share your thoughts: https://wiscoweeklypod.tiny.us/yvvdywbk Passages: * An important point is that under technopopulism, populists do not reject technocratic expertise, but instead rely on it to translate their causes into policy. Central banks thus face pressure to use their technocratic discretion to do more to serve the people, and to be directly accountability to the people rather than to elected representatives. In return for greater responsiveness, they gain even greater power and discretion. The technopopulist logic, I argue, implies that central banks will increasingly become “the only game in town,” both reflecting and exacerbating democratic discontent. (from Technopopulism and Central Banks) * Consumers become more pessimistic about national economic conditions when local gas prices rise. (from Gas Prices and Consumer Sentiment

Mini Series Description
Prior to the pandemic, Car Dealer Principals had adopted the behavior and language of using data to make decisions. At conference after conference, many Dealer Principals spoke of their successes that were due to making data-driven decisions. In making data-driven decisions, Dealer Principals were supposedly letting the data drive their decisions to achieve better predictability over their business outcomes.
As businesses were coming out of the stay-at-home orders, car dealers had a rude awakening. The sales side of their operations was deemed non-essential. State and national dealer organizations scrambled to communicate with elected officials to allow car dealers to resume selling cars. The patience of dealers and the work of dealer organizations paid off. Just a short time later, the issue was resolved, and dealers could sell cars again.
As the dust settled for Dealer Principals, who resumed operations safely with social distancing and home deliveries, most of these dealers made a completely non-data-driven decision. Eighty-eight percent of all car dealerships accepted Paycheck Protection Program funds to save their businesses.
How could have so many Dealer Principals accepted Paycheck Protection Program funds if they were making data-driven decisions? Because they could not predict their next paycheck.
Predicting The Next Paycheck is a three-part podcast miniseries assessing the behaviors of Car Dealers and their data-inspired decisions. Featured in this miniseries are business executives who operate in the automotive data science space.

This podcast mini series is brought to you by automotiveMastermind.

With 18 states adopting school choice, the most populous state in the union may also be on the verge of adoption. California is undergoing a recall election and the leading candidate to replace Gavin Newsom is Larry Elder. Edler is an outspoken advocate of school choice. So what is it? How does it work? What is a historical perspective on it? How does critical race theory affect school choice?
Neal McCluskey is the Director of the Center for Educational Freedom at the libertarian think tank, Cato Institute. He provides an 'a to z' explanation of why school choice works better for teachers, starting with defining school choice to why the stakes are so high with public schools adopting critical race theory.

Politics aside, the Recall Newsom Campaign deserves much credit for what it has been able to achieve. According to Ballotpedia, "since 1911, there have been 55 attempts to recall a California Governor. The only successful recall campaign was in 2003 when voters recalled then-Gov. Gray Davis.” On the heels of the September 14th recall vote, the Recall Newsom Campaign is nearing its final stages. What has made this campaign successful thus far? After all, this is the fifth of six recall attempts filed against Newsom since 2019. Orrin Heatlie serves as the executive leader of the Recall Newsom Campaign, and he shared some business insights into the recall campaign from following the NIMS management strategy to Facebook marketing to radio advertising to making business decisions and not political ones. Hello Business Class Listeners and thank you for tuning into Wisco Weekly, and our latest season of the podcast. When I first started Wisco Weekly, I discussed primarily dealership customer experiences…maybe you were a car buyer and wanted to know better about buying or working with your local dealer, or perhaps you were the seller and wanted to better your processes to optimize the customer experience. Then as the audience grew and my network grew, I became more interested in the mobility space. Whether it was ridesharing, robo taxis, to policies that regulated micro mobility or to concepts like universal basic mobility, there was an entire subject matter I was unfamiliar with. Now, we are at the next evolvement and this season is titled “Not Your Father’s Economy” and this season is a tribute to my father. You see my father is a first generation immigrant who knew nothing about the American way of life. He emigrated to the U.S. with the hope of creating a life that was not possible in the Philippines. The life he was aspiring can simply be put in a two-word caption -- "income opportunity." And starting in the 1970s, he became the best student he could be when learning about what it takes to create individual prosperity from working hard, working multiple jobs, being frugal, and also investing. And it’s in the area of investing where he really accelerated his income and wealth creation. As a child growing up, I bore witness to all of this and I recall every morning he would read the Investor’s Business Daily paper and review all stocks available to invest in. Fast forward to 2021, this economy that we are in is much different than my father’s economy. Household debt is way up, borrowing is way up, the ability to make money is exponentially more advantageous now than ever before, there are more 1099 workers than ever before, there is more regulation than ever before…this is not my father’s economy. While this latest season of Wisco Weekly is entitled Not Your Father’s Economy, this is the same title given to a brand new podcast channel which now hosts Wisco Weekly. Not Your Father’s Economy (NYFE) podcast channel, which is available on Apple Podcasts only, merges the advice given by fathers with the digital nomad economy. The income opportunities available in today's connected world have unlocked an economy that our father's never knew possible. From digital content creators to remote contracting work to the increase in the money supply and beyond, NYFE provides the necessary context to navigate this new economy and apply an immigrant father's advice. To this end, I will be adding more shows to the NYFE podcast channel network. You’ll get to hear more thoughts, analysis, and entertainment of navigating this new economy. AND…I hope you will consider supporting the show by becoming a paid NYFE subscriber. For bonus, ad-free episodes that deliver actionable insights, become a paid-NYFE subscriber for $8.49 a month or $93.99 a year on Apple Podcasts. Start with a 3-day trial and cancel anytime. For the last week, markets are undergoing something that surpasses that of a "correction." Inflation. Is. The. Talk. Of. The. Town. While prices on goods are going up and supply bottlenecks are being formed, the market is having a severe allergic reaction to the inflation media hype. This inflation hysteria was predictable, and it's created a bubble for a new school of economic thought, modern monetary theory (MMT). Tune in to hear more about the markets reaction to inflation, and the relationship between MMT and Mary Barra's request to receive more electric vehicle subsidies. From Mercedes Benz USA to Cox Automotive to Big Media, the #StopAsianHate campaign has forced many to speak out against the anti-Asian sentiment that has been permeating in our culture. In particular, there was a report that many have cited to support the anti-Asian sentiment, Stop AAPI Hate National Report. Upon scrutinizing and analyzing the data, it is very incomplete and certainly not a report that we should be basing policy or even organizational decisions on. The data is a good starting point, and we need the proficiency and competency of data scientists to help discern what is important, what is not important, and what are we missing.
If indeed there is an anti-Asian sentiment in the United States (and beyond), then we need to raise the bar of the data collection process. We need to improve the surveys to produce more accurate results. We need to collaborate with other entities and data sets to produce more meaningful data.
Be better with data. Do better with data. So we can make better decisions.

Passage 1:
Smart growth is based on the premise that Americans need to drive less to reduce congestion, energy consumption, and environmental impacts. To reduce driving, the vision calls for spending more money on urban transit, intercity rail, and bike/pedestrian facilities. The vision also calls for reducing the average size of lots for single-family homes and increasing the percentage of people who live in multifamily housing or mixed-used developments, both of which are supposed to reduce driving.
Passage 2
Efficiency vision is based on the premise that the resources available for transportation improvements are scarce and should be used as effectively as possible. This vision relies on user fees rather than taxes to pay for transportation. Transportation decisions are made by setting goals (sometimes called performance standards) and ranking transportation projects according to their ability to meet those goals. Goals could include congestion relief, energy savings, pollution reduction, and safety. Reducing driving is not a goal but merely one possible means to attaining some of the other goals. The projects that achieve the goals at the lowest cost are selected.

During this COVID-19 pandemic, it is more than normal for small businesses to experience a host of problems. These problems are segmented into two categories -- personal and professional. For instance, there may be personal problems affecting employees that in turn affect the business operation, and there are professional problems like turning the business into a more digital operation. It is not obvious which derives first, and hence, the attempt at solving them leaves no empty space on the whiteboard. So how should businesses approach these problems? One way is to think like a mechanic. Our featured guest is Joseph Kacala, the Chief Product Officer at automotiveMastermind. He's a mechanic-turned-tech guy, and his approach to addressing problems is to simply dive in and start the work. This mindset plays out in his personal life where he and his wife operate a non-profit dog rescue and encounter problems like where to take dogs to get them spade or neutered. And this mindset also carries over into his professional life where he and team at automotiveMastermind pivoted from a SAAS operation to a business development center to aid their dealer clients. It's not sexy, it's not glamourous, you must get your hands dirty...just like a mechanic. Tune in to hear how Mr. Kacala approaches problem solving, and how businesses should "vet" technology solution providers. What is certain coming out of COVID-19 is that businesses will transform their existing operation into a digital one. And these digital operations will drive the new business models for the mobility of people and goods. Related Episodes

In urban spaces throughout the country, app-based ridesharing platforms like Uber and Lyft have a greater impact on the economy than what meets the eye. For years, these services were rarely regulated, and there were minimal protections in place for individuals driving for the companies. In recent years, states such as New York and California have become vocal in their crusades to regulate the app-based economy, including California’s keystone statute Assembly Bill 5. In the previous episode of this two-part series, host Dennis Wisco introduced key policies at play and delved into the Classical Economic interpretation of the impact of California Assembly Bill 5 on the economy. Listen in as Dennis outlines key elements of Keynesian Economics, and how it applies to the regulation of the gig economy. Keynesian economic theory is a school of thought developed by British economist John Maynard Keynes in the 1930s that supposes the totality of spending in the economy, and its impact on output and inflation. Essentially, Keynes argued that a healthy economy depends on the government to regulate, balance, and manage economic opportunity. In his 1936 book, The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money, Keynes discusses the idea of “perfect competition,” which exists in a close-to-ideal economic society. Under this model, the government is flooded with money in order to create economic opportunities. Therefore, the Keynesian model argues against the California App-Based Driver’s Regulation Initiative in order to keep AB-5 in effect and thus allow the government to continue to regulate the gig-based economy’s labor protections as they relate to app-based drivers. Tune in to this episode to hear excerpts from Keynes’ book and how this theory applies to current policy. Dennis describes the line in the sand between the Classical and Keynesian perspectives as they relate to California Assembly Bill 5 and protections for app-based drivers. With key policies and initiatives persistently shaping business models for the mobility of people and goods, it is critical for us not only to exercise our right to vote but likewise for us to be informed, voters. Find the California App-Based Driver’s Regulation Initiative question on the California ballot this coming November. Since their inception, transportation start-ups like Uber and Lyft have garnered tremendous media and policy attention not only for their service but also for their impact on the labor market. In this two-part series, host Dennis Wisco introduces key concepts of policies that speak to this topic, such as California Assembly Bill 5. He outlines non-partisan arguments that apply economic theory to exploring the bill's policy implications. Tune in to this episode to learn more about the California App-Based Driver's Regulation Initiative, the history of the independent contractor status, and a crash-course breakdown of classical economics related to current legislation. California Assembly Bill 5 (AB-5) is a state statute that establishes that it is the employer's burden to prove that a worker is an "independent contractor" and not an "employee" through the application of a three-prong analysis. This analysis identifies an employer's duty to provide greater labor protections to workers through industries' regulation and holds the employer accountable if they fail to do so. Historically, "independent contractors" have been excluded from certain protections, including minimum wage, unemployment benefits, and overtime pay. AB-5 challenges the basis for exclusion and opens doors for gig economy workers to access the same benefits that traditional employees enjoy. The California App-Based Driver's Regulation Initiative is a question on the November election ballot that brings AB-5 back into the spotlight as a response to Uber, Lyft, and other app-based employers refusing to reclassify their drivers as employers. A vote in favor of the ballot initiative would essentially repeal AB-5 and enable companies like Uber and Lyft to construct and adopt their own policies regarding labor and wages specific to the app-based mobility industry. A vote against the initiative would uphold AB-5 and apply its approach to the policy decision that app-based drivers are "employees" rather than "independent contractors." Tune in to part one of this two-part series as Dennis delves into the classical economist view of the outcome of AB-5 and the California App-Based Driver's Regulation Initiative. Classical economics argues in favor of self-regulation, free trade, and follows a "laissez-faire" approach. Therefore, classical economists believe that the bill should be repealed in order to best benefit companies, consumers, and, ultimately, the American economy as a whole. The outcome of this initiative and AB-5 will have a tremendous impact on both the app-based economy and the business models that affect the movement of people and goods. * What Keynesian Economics Would Say About AB5 * Micromobility Regulation for Urbanites and Suburbanites * From Private Property to a Shared Economy

Over the past decade, Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) like Uber and Lyft have shifted the role of ridesharing from cool to necessity within the modern movement economy. However, as TNCs start to expand their services - through e-scooters, e-bikes, and even public transit connectivity - dynamics within their user base, driver pool, and overarching business models are, in turn, affected. In this episode, host Dennis Wisco speaks with ridesharing expert and entrepreneur Harry Campbell, and CoMotion MIAMI’s Jonah Bliss, to answer the ever-looming question: Has ridesharing plateaued?
Entrepreneur and ex-aerospace engineer Harry Campbell is the founder of TheRideshareGuy.com, a blog, podcast, and YouTube channel dedicated to reaching rideshare drivers and enthusiasts alike to serve as a platform for drivers to connect and share their experiences. Always having been drawn to uncovering the inner-workings of our modern world, Harry studied aerospace engineering at UC San Diego and then worked for six years at Boeing. After a while, Harry realized a yearning to embark upon his own entrepreneurial endeavors and entered the gig-economy. When Harry started driving for Uber and Lyft in 2013, he quickly realized that there’s a lot more to getting people safely from Point A to Point B. Harry started blogging about his experiences and conversations, and TheRideshareGuy.com was born. In addition to his dedicated content on TheRideshareGuy.com, Harry continues to write for top tech publications, like WIRED, Forbes, Fusion & Business Insider. His first book, “The Rideshare Guide,” was published in 2018. Since then, Harry has continued to work on creating educational content and reference materials to help new drivers navigate the industry.
The Rideshare Guy was founded in 2014 and has quickly grown into a thriving community for rideshare drivers across the globe. Harry and his team post monthly content on their blog, podcast, and youtube to help hundreds of thousands of drivers work smarter and not harder to capitalize on their full potential in the gig economy. TheRideShareguy.com is a well-informed source for not only Uber and Lyft drivers but also food delivery providers like Doordash and PostMates, scooter services like Bird, and more. TheRideShareGuy.com also offers advice and services beyond the basics of rideshare culture, and has resources for drivers spanning from insurance, taxes, policy information, mileage tracking, and even “Life After Ridesharing.”

In this episode, we feature Scotty Reiss and Elgie Bright as we discuss the 2019 Winter Women In Automotive Conference, encouraging the presence of women passionate about automotive, and what the car business could gain from promoting women into leadership positions.
“Look at the imbalance in the statistics - Women are responsible for the buying of 85% of automobiles - $500 billion per year. Yet we only hold 17% of the jobs. There’s a disconnect.” - Scotty Reiss, Founder of A Girls’ Guide to Cars.
Scotty Reiss is a writer, mom, and entrepreneur from Greenwich, Connecticut. It was this imbalance in the statistics that fueled Scotty’s passion for venturing into the car industry. A trained writer and content development expert, Scotty began her career as a journalist for publications like the New York Times, Town & Country, Entrepreneur, Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, and Adweek. In 2013, she switched gears and co-founded A Girls’ Guide to Cars, a fun and informative website dedicated to helping girls and women navigate the automotive industry. She is a board member for the Women In Automotive Conference and was the first woman elected president to the International Motor Press Association.
“We are inspired by not only Scotty but the rest of the Women In Automotive mission. But here’s the rub on that - we educate who we get. We have to do a better job of telling our stories of the opportunities that are available in automotive. Still, the industry itself has to tell that story - Here is who influences sales, Here’s the way we have been taking care of that consumer journey, and Here’s how we’re going to do it going forward.” - Elgie Bright
Elgie Bright is the Automotive Marketing Chair at Northwood University, where he teaches classes such as Dealership Variable and Fixed Operations, Financial Analysis, and Industry Issues. Elgie served as a District Sales and Service Manager for General Motors for seventeen years before joining the faculty at Northwood. Elgie loves to enable students to pursue their passions for automotive in higher education and encourages them to explore their creativity throughout their time in his classes. Elgie lives in Flushing, Michigan, with his family, and holds an MBA from Northwood University.

For aging Americans, one of the most pressing concerns when it comes to their autonomy is transportation. But is this a mobility, economic, or social issue? Or a combination of all three? In this episode, Dennis Wisco and Rudy Salo address the biggest problems faced by senior citizens on the move, like LAX-it, rent spikes in transit-oriented development areas, and how "Dial-A-Ride" senior ridesharing paved the way for today's most popular taxi alternatives.
"Freedom is Movement. Can I go from here to there safely? That's it. That's freedom." - Rudy Salo
Every year, over 600,000 seniors are forced to give up their driver's licenses. This can be attributed to a variety of factors, the frontrunner being that many seniors age out of eligibility for insurance coverage. This decreased autonomy in movement prompts many seniors to consider relocating to senior living communities, or cities. However, even after a decade of public transit development initiatives, LA's public transit system remains largely inaccessible to the community members who need it most.
As the "Baby Boomer" generation comes into retirement age, the concerns of seniors are projected to shape the business models for the mobility of people and goods for the future more than ever before. Tune in to this episode to hear how policies like California S.B. 50, accessible metro stations, and autonomous vehicles are opening doors for seniors on the move.

Like many other industries, the future leaders in automobility incubate on college campuses across the United States. In this episode, host Dennis Wisco comes to you from the Aztec Racing Team workshop with Team President Dani Phan and Chief Engineer Austin Hoang at San Diego State University to kick off a series highlighting Formula SAE clubs on college campuses.
Formula SAE is an international collegiate design competition that challenges student teams to design and manufacture an open-wheel race car during the academic year. There are two annual Formula SAE competitions in the United States that consist of three judged phases – Design, Performance, and Business. Because of this, to perform well, team members are expected to have not only high-performance racing vehicles, but also excellent project management, teamwork, and business skills.
Aztec Racing is a non-profit student organization at San Diego State University that welcomes all current students at the school regardless of their declared major. Founded in 1994 with limited resources and low student interest, Aztec Racing has since gone on to receive many recognitions within the Formula SAE organization, including the SAE Perseverance Award for being one of the top three rookie teams at the FSAE West Competition in Fontana, California in 2008. This academic year, Aztec Racing was fortunate enough to receive increased funding from the SDSU Student Org’s allotted budget, which will allow them to make more creative choices with their entry, while still following a structured production cycle, use industry-standard simulation software to aid design, and use quantifiable data to justify design choices.
In this episode, Dennis, Dani, and Austin discuss leadership in automobility spaces, design constraints of student-engineered racing vehicles, and hot topics in the future of automobility like electric vehicles. Tune in to hear how participation in Formula SAE teams like Aztec Racing instill a hunger for young engineers to influence the business models for the mobility of people and goods for the future.
From the Model S's to the Model X's and the new Cybertruck, there is no doubt that Tesla is revolutionizing the automobility experience across the globe through the integration of electricity and technology in their groundbreaking designs. In this episode, host Dennis Wisco speaks with father-son power duo Rahul and Haydn Sonnad, on how they were able to build an exceptional business model off of the success of a pre-existing business.
Rahul and Haydn are the co-founders of Tesloop, a one-way transit rental company that moves people and goods between Los Angeles and San Diego with crowdsourced Tesla vehicles.
Rahul Sonnad holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Master's in Computer Science and Japanese from the University of Washington. Prior to Tesloop, Rahul worked as an engineering manager at Adobe and at Microsoft. His responsibilities included serving as a product designer for Microsoft Word, as well as the Research & Development Manager for all Asian releases of Microsoft Office. Rahul's interest in Tesla vehicles is its similarity to a digital media service by allowing users to optimize their experience through interactivity and upgrades over time. Rahul is a creative businessman, and passionate about exploring the future of transportation through his work with small start-ups like Tesloop.
Rahul's youthful son, Haydn Sonnad, first conceived the Tesloop transportation model while developing a strategy to procure and finance a vehicle for his summer vacation at age 16. Haydn has always been passionate about automobility and first-class travel, and regularly attends the Tesla Shareholders meetings where he often addresses his most pressing automobility questions to Elon Musk himself. Haydn's current responsibilities at Tesloop as the company continues to expand its operations include corporate communications, public relations, and managing car maintenance and equipment. His favorite part of being involved in a start-up is having the opportunity to come up with a pitch deck and creating a cohesive narrative within the company.
The team at Tesloop stands by Tesla electric vehicles as the most efficient and economical means to travel long distances, endorsing the Tesla car as the world's safest and most technologically advanced vehicle on the road. Tune in to this episode as Dennis, Rahul, and Haydn discuss their endorsement of Tesla, connectivity, autonomous vehicles, and, most importantly… making money. Through the integration of existing infrastructure like these revolutionary electric vehicles, ride-sharing platforms like Tesloop are setting a radical precedent for the business models of the mobility of people and goods for the future.

Upon graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor's in History, our guest attended the American University in Cairo where he learned the language and culture of the Arabic world. He speaks four languages -- Arabic, English, French, and Italian.

Who can you trust when buying a car?
This is a very complex question. Certainly, the easy answer, the one that speaks to our monkey brain, is to seek the counsel of your parents. After all, if they kept you alive for the last 18 years, they have some credibility of knowing what's right, and therefore you trust them implicitly.
Another answer would be to trust technology. Examples of trust in technology are visiting websites like Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds, and Truecar, where they've amassed copious amounts of data points to provide you with trusted guidance.
Other examples of trust in technology are to use apps. Seventy episodes ago, we discussed an app called AutoGravity which allows you to shop for cars, apply for credit, and know your payment all from your phone so that there are no surprises when you arrive at the dealership.
There is a common thread to these trusted sources. They remain agnostic about your purchase.
It is ironic, to some degree, that trust is embedded in sources who don't care about your business versus those who do care about your business. This is the conundrum of automotive dealers where agnostic sources of car buying are trusted more than the dealer.
And let's be honest. Both customers and dealers play this game of poker, trying to only disclose tidbits of information so that one player can eventually go all in.
Tune in to hear about this crazy game of poker between customers and dealers.

I have been using Echo Auto for the last three weeks and testing how good this product works. What I can share with you now is that the ability for Alexa, the digital assistant, to understand commands while music is playing or under the ambient noise of driving in general is pretty impressive. This level of quality can also be said for other digital assistants like Siri, Cortana, ‘Hey Google’, and others.
In episode #96, Head of Evangelism for Search for Microsoft, Christi Olson, shares how the world of digital assistants has gone from a place of search to a place of action. More and more, the way users interact with a digital assistant (also sometimes known as a voice assistant) leads to a particular action being performed. It’s like your significant other finishing your sentence. The traditional use cases are to ask a digital assistant, "Cortana, what is the address to Mandalay Bay Hotel?" This triggers the digital assistant’s search functionality. In normal human behavior, what comes next after inquiring about a location is…actually getting there. And this is where digital assistants are becoming a place of action. After Cortana replies with the address, the next question offered by Cortana is ‘Would you like me to take you there?”
With more adoption of digital assistants in our homes, cars, and on our bodies (mobile phone), the practical applications are becoming more apparent. As stated in the 2019 Microsoft Voice Report which was authored by Olson, she describes the evolution of digital assistants and how businesses can think concretely about integrating this technology into a business.

Do automotive retailers even have a mobility problem? The framing of this question suggests that a problem has been identified, though perhaps under a false pretense. Think back to products and services that tech companies have introduced — Google Glass, Microsoft Zune, or Amazon’s Fire Phone — in an attempt to solve real problems. But what really were the problems these products were solving?
In episode #95, we hear from Russ Lemmer, President and Chief Product Officer of Dealerware, a fully-connected, fully-digital fleet management platform. His knowledge and experience in learning the art of problem framing led to a successful acquisition of Silvercar, a car rental mobility solution which he helped co-found and was acquired by Audi in 2017. His process to uncover business problems entails applying the scientific methodology of identifying the situation, complication, stating a hypothesis, and testing to confirm or disprove the hypothesis. If performed correctly, this rigorous process results in iterations of a product until it actually solves a real problem.
Tune in to learn how Russ and Dealerware have identified the problem of mobility within an automotive retail operation.
