CMCIreland
The Contemporary Music Centre is Ireland's national archive and resource centre for new music, supporting the work of composers throughout the Republic and Northern Ireland.
The Centre is used, nationally and internationally, by performers, composers, promoters and members of the public interested in finding out more about music in Ireland. Its library and sound archive, open to the public free of charge, contain the only comprehensive collection in existence of music by Irish composers. Extensive reference and advice services are available and the Centre's web site provides access to CMC's resources for those who cannot visit in person.
The Contemporary Music Centre engages in an ongoing programme of development work to promote new Irish music at home and abroad, and is a member of the International Association of Music Information Centres (IAMIC).

Composed between 1998 and 1999, this work was premiered by Conor Biggs (baritone) and David Adams (piano) in November, 2000, as part of the ‘Mostly Modern Series’ at the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, College Green, Dublin.
Performed here by David Adams, it premiered on September 2nd, 2001, in St. Michael’s Church, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin.
Commissioned by Breaking Ground, this work was a centre-piece for the Ballymun Regeneration ‘per cent for art’ programme in 2003. The text was written and sung by the choir of St. Joseph’s Primary School, under the guidance of Kate Newmann. Alongside the wind bands of Ballymun Comprehensive and St Joseph's Primary School, they were conducted by Ron Cooney in concerts at the AXIS Community Arts Centre, Ballymun, Dublin, on April 10th and 11th, 2003.

Raymond Deane’s latest opera ‘Vagabones’ is performed this month by Opera Collective Ireland. Based on the play ‘Trespasses’ by Emma Donoghue, the opera with a libretto by Renate Debrun is directed by Ben Barnes and features an Irish cast and the musicians of Crash Ensemble. Ed Bennett talks to CMC about his work, 'Song of the Books', a work for cello, ensemble and electronics which is based on material from the traditional Irish tune ‘Amhrán na Leabhar’. Since 2012 CMC, in partnership with the Association of Irish Composers with support from Culture Ireland, has supported an artist residency at the soundSCAPE new music festival in northern Italy.
For this year's festival, which took place in July in Cesena, composer Ann Cleare was selected as Irish Artist-in-Residence.
She curated a concert of works by Irish composers, entitled 'Surrealist Voices from Ireland', and gave talks on the composers and works featured in this concert, as well as her own work.

CMC's Director Evonne Ferguson was invited to chair a panel discussion at Classical Next on issues facing composers in the 21st Century.
The panel, entitled 'CTRL - ALT - Compose - What does it take to be a composer in the 21st century?' was presented by PRS Foundation in association with CMC and focused on the challenges and opportunities for composers at different stages in their career in today’s musical climate.
Following the panel discussion, Evonne spoke briefly to each of the invited panelists: composer/educator Vanessa Lann, Irish composer and concert promoter Matthew Whiteside, and composer/pianist John Kameel Farah.
CMC participation at Classical Next was also part of an Irish delegation which included representation from, among others, Crash Ensemble, Association of Irish Composers, Chamber Choir Ireland, Music Network, and the Irish Baroque Orchestra. This delegation was made possible thanks to funding from Culture Ireland.

The final episode compares and contrasts the period with today, with contributions from a number of the composers featured in the previous programmes as well as a selection of younger composers who are active today. Roger Doyle talks about the legacy which he helped create in the field of electronic music and how a whole generation of younger composers have embraced music technology in their work. Jennifer Walshe discusses her unique path which she has traveled in composition, and will reflect on the theme of experimentalism in new Irish music today and the parallels between it and the earlier period.
Dave Flynn focuses on the use of traditional music in composition and how it has become the focus again for Irish composers in new and exciting ways. While Garrett Sholdice talks about his life as a young Irish composer living in Berlin and how it is important for him as a composer to maintain a certain creative distance from Ireland while at the same time continuing to be actively involved in Ireland through the music production company, Ergodos, which he co-directs with Benedict Schlepper-Connolly.
The shifting boundaries between musical genres are also be explored with Linda Buckley, who will talk about her own diverse musical interests and how this approach is now characteristic of many younger Irish composers today. The programme finishes with contributions from some of the younger generation of composers and where they see themselves fitting in as Irish composers.

The second programme explores the change of direction for Irish composers during the period and looks at some of the key motivations for this change. Beginning with well known electronic music composer Roger Doyle, who produced his first LP Oizzo No in 1975 and a follow-up release, Thalia, in 1978, the programme explores Doyle’s seemingly unorthodox approach to new music and its reception in Dublin in the 1970s.
Moving from Dublin to Germany, the programme focuses on the experiences there of Gerald Barry and Raymond Deane, both of whom studied in Cologne, then a hotbed of experimentalism in music and where an international community of composers converged. Also central to the changing face of new Irish music during this time was the establishment in 1976 of contemporary music ensemble, Concorde by US-born Jane O’Leary, an ensemble which continues to this day. Jane will talk about her first experiences of musical life in Ireland and will provide perspective on what it was like to be an unknown, American, female composer trying to follow her musical path in Ireland during the mid 1970s.
Pianist Isabelle O'Connell talks about her programme of all female Irish composers for her recital as part of the Composing the Island festival.

Amanda Feery is an Irish composer currently based in the U.S., where she is completing a PhD in Composition at Princeton University. She graduated from Trinity College Dublin, having completed a B.A. in Music in 2006, and an M.Phil in Music and Media Technologies in 2009.
Past collaborators include Crash Ensemble, Fidelio Trio, ConTempo Quartet, Orkest de Ereprijs, Lisa Moore, Cora-Venus Lunny, Michelle O'Rourke, Zoe Conway, and Paul Roe. She has participated as a composer fellow at Ostrava Days Festival (Czech Republic), Soundscape Festival (Italy), Bang on a Can Summer Festival (U.S), and the International Young Composers Meeting (Netherlands). She was winner of the West Cork Chamber Music Composer Award in 2009, and the Jerome Hynes Award in 2013.
Current and future projects include a large-scale multimedia work for vocal quartet and So Percussion, and commissions from Ensemble Mise-en, Bearthoven, Jacquin Trio, and cellist Amanda Gookin. (Contemporary Music Centre, Ireland)

Born in Templeglantine, Co. Limerick in 1951, John Buckley studied flute with Doris Keogh and composition with James Wilson at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. His subsequent composition studies were in Cardiff with the Welsh composer Alun Hoddinott and with John Cage.
He has written a diverse range of work, from solo instruments to full orchestra. The list includes numerous commissions, amongst them Concerto for Organ and Orchestra and Campane in Aria for the National Concert Hall, Rivers of Paradise for the official opening of the Concert Hall at the University of Limerick, Maynooth Te Deum for the bicentenary of St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, and A Mirror into the Light for Camerata Ireland’s inaugural concert and many works for RTÉ.
John Buckley's catalogue now extends to almost 100 works, which have been performed and broadcast in more than fifty countries worldwide. His compositions have represented Ireland on five occasions at the International Rostrum of Composers and at five ISCM festivals. Amongst his awards are the Varming Prize (1977), the Macaulay Fellowship (1978), the Arts Council's Composers' Bursary (1982), and the Toonder Award (1991). In 1984 he was elected a member of Aosdána, Ireland's state sponsored academy of creative artists. His music has been recorded on the Anew, Altarus, Black Box, Marco Polo, Lyric FM, Atoll and Celestial Harmonies labels. He has made numerous broadcasts on music and music education for RTÉ and Lyric FM.
He has been awarded both a PhD and a DMus by the National University of Ireland and is active as a lecturer on composition and music in education. He is on the staff of St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra, Dublin. His biography Constellations: The Life and Music of John Buckley by Benjamin Dwyer was published in May 2011 by Carysfort Press.

Garrett Sholdice is an Irish composer. He has studied with Donnacha Dennehy, Nicola LeFanu and William Brooks. In 2012 he completed a PhD in composition at the University of York under the supervision of William Brooks. More recently, he has received some private lessons from Kevin Volans. His music has been described as possessing an 'exquisite delicacy' (The Irish Times). His music is featured on the Ergodos Musicians album, I Call to You, described by RTÉ Ten as ‘perhaps the most important record of new Irish music released this year.’
His work has been performed by, amongst others, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, violinist Ioana Petcu-Colan, Maya Homburger/Barry Guy duo, and pianist Aki Takahashi. His music has been performed in Europe, North America and Japan, in venues/spaces including the National Concert Hall in Dublin, Issue Project Room in New York and Tsukuba Nova Hall in Japan.
During spring 2011 he was composer-in-residence at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris. In April 2011, and again in April 2012, he received Bursary Awards from the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. He is a co-director of Ergodos, a Dublin-based production company, record label and music distributor that he founded with Benedict Schlepper-Connolly in 2006. Sholdice and Schlepper-Connolly co-curate and co-produce all Ergodos projects.
Notable recent performances include the first performances of a piano concerto for pianist Michael McHale and the Irish Chamber Orchestra (conducted by Gábor Tákacs-Nagy), commissioned by ICO with funds from the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, and the first performances of a new madrigal for UK vocal ensemble EXAUDI.
2015 saw the premiere of his third string quartet, Das Blaue Licht, as part of David Lang’s Festival of Music at the National Concert Hall, Dublin. 2016 will see the premiere of a new work for Crash Ensemble, commissioned for their Free State 9 showcase, which he will also co-curate. Michael Gallen is an Irish composer and performer. Having been brought up primarily with Irish traditional and folk music, he later pursued studies in composition with Jose Manuel Lopez Lopez in Paris, and is comfortable meandering at the borders of different musical styles. He has been commissioned to write for solo instrument, small ensemble and orchestra, and is fast developing a reputation as one of Ireland’s most exciting composers of new choral music.

In 2011 his piece The Hidden/The Dead was winner of the Densité 93/Cervantes prize. Since his return to more familiar shores, Michael has been involved in several collaborations with dance and theatre, and has an operatic work in the pipeline and he has recently finished the orchestral and choral work Wilde Stories, a suite of music performed and recorded by RTE Concert Orchestra and broadcast on RTE lyric fm as part of its Wilde Stories project with Athena Media.
He regularly collaborates with choreographer Philip Connaughton, and a piece entitled TARDIGRADE, for choir, piano, string quartet and a kaleidoscope of dance and video premiered at the 2014 Dublin Fringe Festival to critical acclaim, winning the prize for best sound, visual and costume design.
His music has been used extensively in film, radio and television, including the score for Athena Media/RTE Radio 1’s Citizens:Lockout 1913-2013 series which won Gold Medal at the 2014 New York Radio Festival Awards and for the Grand /Gold award winning history documentary Athena Media/Newstalk The Kinder Letters. The Kinder Letters is now nominated for a PPI Award for best documentary.
Michael is also the pianist and lead vocalist with touring Irish band Ana Gog and a founding member of the DeySed art collective. Michael is currently working on an opera called 'A Month in the Lock'.

Donnacha Dennehy features in Cross Currents, a three-part series exploring contemporary Irish composers and their music produced by Athena Media for RTÉ lyric fm in association with CMC.
Born in Dublin in 1970, Donnacha Dennehy has received commissions from Dawn Upshaw, the Kronos Quartet, Alarm Will Sound, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Bang On A Can, Icebreaker, Joanna MacGregor, Percussion Group of the Hague, RTE National Symphony Orchestra, BBC Ulster Orchestra and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players among others.
His work has featured in festivals such as the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in the UK (which opened its 2012 Festival with a portrait concert devoted to Dennehy’s music), ISCM World Music Days, Carnegie Hall’s Contemporary Music Subscription Series (in 2013 and forthcoming in 2014), WNYC’s New Sounds Live, Bang On A Can, Ultima Festival in Oslo, Musica Viva Lisbon, the Saarbrucken Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, and the Gaudeamus Festival in Amsterdam. In 2010 his large single-movement orchestral piece, Crane was ‘recommended’ by the International Rostrum of Composers
Returning to Ireland after studies abroad in the USA, France and Holland, Dennehy founded the Crash Ensemble, Dublin's now-renowned new music group, in 1997. Alongside the singers Dawn Upshaw and Iarla O’Lionáird, Crash Ensemble features on the 2011 Nonesuch release of Dennehy’s music, entitled Grá agus Bás. NPR named it one of its “50 favorite albums’’ (in any genre) of 2011. In July 2012, Cantaloupe released an EP of his piano music, played by Lisa Moore. Previous releases include a number by NMC Records in London.
Previously a tenured lecturer at Trinity College Dublin, Donnacha was appointed a Global Scholar at Princeton University in the Autumn of 2012. He was also appointed composer-in-residence for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in Texas (2013-14). In 2014 he joined the music faculty at Princeton University.

Episode 1 from the radio series on Irish composers and their music produced by Athena Media for RTÉ lyric fm in association with CMC.
The episode opens with Seóirse Bodley, part of an earlier generation of composers who made waves in the 1960s, and traces the evolution of new music in Ireland from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s. The programme will deal with the issues which music faced in a post-colonial Ireland: the lack of an obvious tradition in Irish composition, and a tension between modernity and tradition.
Other contributions in this series will include those from John Kinsella, composer and former Head of Music in RTÉ, Frank Corcoran, who will talk about his emergence from Tipperary and his discovery of the European contemporary music scene through recordings and performances of the Radio Eireann Symphony Orchestra, and Raymond Deane on his early career as a young composer in Dublin. Some of the key developments for new music during this time will be covered, such as the establishment of the Association of Irish Composers, and the Dublin Festival of Twentieth Century Music, and John Buckley will talk about how these developments were instrumental in the compositional path which he followed.

Exploring the generation of Irish composers who emerged in the 1970s and examines what and who influenced them and their emerging sound. Many of them looked towards Germany and the contemporary music developing there with composers like Karlheinz Stockhausen and Mauricio Kagel rather than looking inward to Irish sources or a tradition shaped by Sean O Riada. Award winning actor Barry McGovern presents this landmark series on contemporary Irish composers and their music.

Episode 3 - ‘FULL CIRCLE” Friday September 23rd at 7pm RTÉ Lyric FM
The final episode in Cross Currents looks at the legacy created by the ground-breaking generation of composers in the 1970s and their impact on the younger composers today. We hear from young Irish composers, including Linda Buckley, Michael Gallen and Amanda Feery, about how their sense of identity as Irish composers has been formed. The series ends by examining the place of the Irish composer in today’s society, and asks if this role has changed over the past 40 years.

Gerald Barry was born in Ireland in 1952 and after attending University College Dublin went to Amsterdam and later Cologne to continue his studies. His time in Germany, where he studied with Stockhausen and Kagel, proved to be a liberating experience and he soon came to public attention in 1979 with radical ensemble works.
Barry has received a number of commissions by the BBC, including ‘Chevaux-de-frise’ for the 1988 Proms, given its Russian première by the Mariinsky Orchestra in 2007; ‘The Conquest of Ireland’, given its German première by the Bavarian RSO in 1998; ‘Day’ for the BBC Symphony Orchestra; ‘The Eternal Recurrence’, a setting of Nietzsche for voice and orchestra; and ‘Hard D’ for the Orkest de Volharding.
Barry’s first opera ‘The Intelligence Park’ (recorded on NMC), was commissioned by the ICA and first performed at the 1990 Almeida Festival. A second opera, ‘The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit’, written for Channel 4 Television, opened the 2002 Aldeburgh Festival, followed by performances in London and the Berliner Festwochen conducted by Thomas Adés. A new staging took place in 2013 at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. ‘The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant’ was given in 2005 at English National Opera and in 2008 at the Basle Opera. ‘La Plus Forte’, a one-act opera on the Strindberg play, was commissioned by Radio France for the 2007 Festival Présences. Sung by Barbara Hannigan, it toured to Amsterdam, London, Dublin, Miami and Toronto. The RTÉ recording of ‘The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant’ has been re-released on the Discovery label.
Barry wrote ‘Wiener Blut’, ‘Dead March’ and ‘Beethoven’ for Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. ‘God Save The Queen’ for choir and ensemble was commissioned for the London Sinfonietta by London's South Bank Centre on the fiftieth birthday of the Royal Festival Hall in 2001. Recent chamber works include ‘Le Vieux Sourd’ for piano, commissioned by Betty Freeman, ’Feldmans Six-Penny Editions’ for the London Sinfonietta and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and ‘No people’. for Ensemble 7Bridges.
His most recent opera, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, was jointly commissioned by the LA Philharmonic Society and the Barbican in London, and received its world premiere staging at Opéra national de Lorraine – Nancy in 2013. Two further productions were staged the same year at the Royal Opera House Linbury Theatre, and on tour with NI Opera. In 2016 the ROH stagings of ‘Earnest’ will be revived in London with the Britten Sinfonia and in New York with the New York Philharmonic. ‘Earnest’ received a 2013 Royal Philharmonic Award for Large-Scale Composition and a recording was released on NMC in 2014.
Barry's ‘Piano Concerto’, written for Nicolas Hodges and co-commissioned by Musica Viva, Munich and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, was premiered in Munich in 2013 with subsequent performances in 2014 including the UK premiere with the CBSO, the Finnish premiere with Avanti! Chamber Orchestra and the Irish premiere with the RTÉ NSO.
Upcoming works in 2016 include an opera, ‘Alice's Adventures Under Ground’. His music has been recorded on the NMC, Largo, Black Box, Marco Polo, BVHaast and Discovery labels.

Raymond Deane was in the west of Ireland. He moved with his family to Dublin in 1963, and gained his B.Mus degree from University College Dublin in 1974. He studied composition in Bale with Gerald Bennett (1974-75), in Cologne with Karlheinz Stockhausen (1976-77), and in West Berlin, with Isang Yun (1978-9). He taught piano and composition in Oldenburg, Germany, between 1984-86. He was elected to the Irish government-sponsored academy of artists Aosdána in 1986, returning to Ireland the following year.
He was featured composer (with G. Kurtag) at the 1991 Accents Festival in Dublin, and (with Roger Doyle) at the 1998 Sligo New Music Festival. His works have often represented Ireland at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers, and his large orchestral work Ripieno won a special award at the 2000 Rostrum. His works have been commissioned by, among others, RTÉ (for the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland), the Irish Chamber Orchestra (three times), the Vanbrugh String Quartet, the Callino String Quartet, the Arditti String Quartet, the Schubert Ensemble of London, the bass-clarinettist Harry Sparnaay, the pianist Hugh Tinney (twice), the Nordlys Ensemble, etc. His chamber operas The Poet and his Double and The Wall of Cloud were commissioned by Opera Theatre Company. His full-scale opera The Alma Fetish was given its concert premiere by Wide Open Opera in Dublin's NCH in 2013.
His novel Death of a Medium was published by Odell & Adair in 1992, and his memoir In My Own Light was published by Liffey Press in 2013. He has also published many articles down the years on music and politics.
He was artistic director of the first two RTÉ Festivals of Living Music, in 2002 and 2004. In 2005 he was awarded a Doctorate in Musical Composition by the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. CDs entirely devoted to his music have appeared on the Black Box, Naxos/Marco Polo, Resonus Classics andRTÉ labels.

Seóirse Bodley was born in Dublin in 1933. Studies in Ireland and Germany led to a teaching appointment at University College Dublin, where he was awarded the degree of D. Mus. He is currently Emeritus Professor in the music department there.
Influences on his compositions include a range of musical styles from the European avant-garde to Irish traditional music. His works include five symphonies for full orchestra, two chamber symphonies and numerous orchestral, choral, vocal and chamber pieces. The many commissions he has received include his Third Symphony, commissioned for the opening of the National Concert Hall in Dublin, and his Fourth Symphony, commissioned by the Arturo Toscanini Symphony Orchestra of Parma, Italy.
In addition to many performances in Ireland, his music has been broadcast and performed in North America, many European countries, Australia and China. Awards include the Arts Council Prize for Composition, a Travelling Studentship of the National University of Ireland, the Macaulay Fellowship in Music Composition and the Marten Toonder Award. In 2008 Seóirse Bodley was elected a Saoi of Aosdána, Ireland’s state-sponsored academy of creative artists.

Roger Doyle was born in Dublin and studied composition on scholarships at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, the Institute of Sonology at the University of Utrecht and the Finnish Radio Experimental Music Studio.
He has worked extensively in theatre, film and dance, in particular with the music-theatre company Operating Theatre, which he co-founded with actress Olwen Fouéré. Babel, his magnum opus, was begun in 1990 and had its first public showing in an entire wing of the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 1992 as a dance piece. Subsequent sections were composed during residencies at the University of Washington in Seattle, the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, the EMS studios in Stockholm and at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague. A five-CD box set, Babel, was released to celebrate the work's completion and the composer's fiftieth birthday in 1999. Other works include a piano score for the Gate Theatre production of Salomé, directed by Steven Berkoff, which played in Dublin, London's West End and on three world tours. The music, performed by the composer, was released on CD in 2000, as was the CD Under the Green Time, a collaboration with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. A large-scale electronic work Passades was released on three CDs between 2004-2007. He was commissioned by RTÉ for a work for symphony orchestra and pre-recorded acted scenes, a soundtrack for an imaginary film, called Adolf Gébler, Clarinettist - which premiered in 2008. A second ‘cinema for the ear’ The Room in the Tower was premiered by the Crash Ensemble in 2009. Both were released on CD. Recent releases are: Chalant - Memento Mori; music composed around telephone messages from the 1980s; The Thousand Year Old Boy, explorations in imagined world musics; and the opera The Death By Fire Of Giordano Bruno. He is currently Adjunct Professor at Trinity College Dublin. Awards include the Programme Music Prize (1997) and the Magisterium Prize (2007) at the Bourges International Electro-Acoustic Music Competition, France.

Linda Buckley is a composer from the Old Head of Kinsale currently based in Dublin. Her music has been described as “exquisite” (Gramophone) "strange and beautiful" (Boston Globe), “glacially majestic” (RTÉ Ten) with “an exciting body of work that marks her out as a leading figure in the younger generation of Irish composers working in the medium” (Journal of Music).
Her work has been performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Sinfoniker Orchestra, Fidelio Trio, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Trio Scordatura and at international festivals including Bang on a Can at MassMoCA, Gaudeamus Music Week Amsterdam and Seoul International Computer Music Festival.
She studied Music at University College Cork and Music and Media Technologies at Trinity College Dublin. She holds a Ph.D in Composition from Trinity College, where she also lectures, and was RTÉ lyric fm Composer in Residence 2011/13. Recent performances include ‘Beloved on the Earth’ composed for the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra with RTÉ Philharmonic Choir, and ‘Fiol’ performed by the Hebrides Ensemble at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Upcoming projects include commissions from Concorde Ensemble, a song cycle for the Vanbrugh String Quartet with Iarla O’ Lionáird, and a residency at the Visby International Composer’s Centre, Gotland, Sweden.

Born in Dublin in 1932, John Kinsella pursued two careers in artistic administration and in composition, until 1988 when he resigned from his position as Head of Music at RTÉ to fully devote his time to composition.
Since then he has composed ten symphonies, a second violin concerto, a ‘cello concerto and a fifth string quartet, all of which have been publicly performed, and many solo and chamber works.
He has been commissioned by, among others, The Irish Chamber Orchestra, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Dublin International Piano Competition and The Arts Council of Wales.
Recent premieres include a fifth string quartet for 2013 West Cork Chamber Music Festival and a piano piece for the 2014 New Ross Piano Festival. He also composed an orchestral work to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. His Symphony No.10 was premiered in 2012 by The Irish Chamber Orchestra with conductor Gabor Takacs-Nagy.
John Kinsella is a member of Aosdana and is a recipient of the Marten Toonder award. Some of his works are recorded on Chandos, Naxos, RTÉ lyric fm and Irish Chamber Orchestra labels. He is currently working on an eleventh symphony.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Jane O’Leary has been resident in Ireland since 1972. A founding member of Aosdána, Ireland’s state-sponsored academy of creative artists, she is a graduate of Vassar College and holds a PhD in composition from Princeton University, where she studied with Milton Babbitt among others. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music Degree by the National University of Ireland in 2007.
As artistic director and pianist of Concorde ensemble, Jane O’Leary has been nurturing the development of new music in Ireland and promoting its performance worldwide since 1976. She was a founding member of Music for Galway and is currently a Director of The Galway Music Residency and a member of Udarás na hOllscoile Gaillimh.
O’Leary’s music has been selected on several occasions for performance at the ISCM World New Music Days and has been performed at prestigious international festivals and venues, including the Kennedy Center, Washington DC; the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, NY; the Chicago Cultural Center; Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris; Spitalfields Festival, London; West Cork Chamber Music Festival. The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra featured her music on their debut tour of the USA in 2003.
Following international competition, her music was recently selected for performance in NY with mise-en ensemble and at the Parma Music Festival 2015. Recent performances have also included Sydney, Chicago, Paris, Bucharest, Passau and Tallinn.

The piece forms part of a larger collaborative project which Dwyer has been working on for some time, and also includes a book, 'Imagines', which will be launched during the festival, along with an exhibition which takes place in Belfast in June 2015.

'Our Tunes' is a mini music festival for 5-10 year olds curated by cellist Adrian Mantu of Galway Ensemble-in-Residence, RTÉ ConTempo Quartet.
The festival takes place in CMC on 18 and 19 April 2015 from 10.30-17.30 as part of MusicTown, a new 10-day music festival in Dublin.

Rachel Ní Chuinn is an artist who works with sound, text and electronics to explore ideas of touch and movement. Her musical compositions have been performed by members of the Crash Ensemble, The Quiet Music Ensemble, This Is How We Fly and the Dublin Laptop Orchestra. She has also presented visual and performance works in Ireland and Canada. She is co-director, composer and performer with the Dublin Laptop Orchestra and an active member of several music collectives. She has worked on numerous radio art projects with CKUT in Montreal and currently hosts Cluastuiscint a weekly music show on Raidió na Life. Her radio series Aerthonnta aired on Raidió na Life in April 2013 and her feature documentary The Shape of Sounds to Come gets its first broadcast on RTÉ lyric fm in November 2014.
The inaugural Hearsay International Audio Arts Festival took place in Kilfinane, Co. Limerick over three days from November 21st-23rd last. Sound Artists, Composers, Sound Designers, Radio Producers, Field Recordists and a host of audio enthusiasts and practitioners from across the globe took over this village in the Ballyhoura Mountains for three days of performance, discussion, storytelling, listening and more. The festival utilised an eclectic mix of venues including the local, school, church, library and even the parish priests' sitting room (where the host treated his guests to heart warming hot whiskeys)! CMC spoke to some of the composers present and in the below interviews we hear from field recordist, sound artist and soundscape composer Susanna Caprara, aka La Cosa Preziosa about her practice and inspirations. Rachel Ní Chuinn tells us about her compositional practice and radio work and the lack of barriers between each while Robin Parmar discusses the importance of place and its reconstruction in his electroacoustic compositions and improvisations. Susanna Caprara is a sound artist and field recordist originally from the south of Italy and based in Dublin, Ireland. The pseudonym La Cosa Preziosa (‘the precious thing’) refers to the beauty and fragility of the natural sounds that regularly feature in her soundscapes. These have been performed both nationally and internationally, in solo and group shows. Primarily interested in exploring the narrative potential of concrete sounds through the composition of creative soundscapes, utilising exclusively her own field recorded material.

To celebrate the tenure of RTE NSO’s new prinicpal conductor Alan Buribayev, Elaine has honoured him with a fanfare of welcome.The work will open the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s 2010-2011 Season on Friday 10th of September 2010. Elaine also speaks about the Aspiro Project, a collaborative commission between Aspiro Director Mary Amond O'Brien, writer Sean Hardie, and the members of Aspiro Youth Ensemble. Elaine has been working closely with Aspiro youth ensemble with support from the Arts Council Commissions Award to compose a new piece of music which is inspired by VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art and The George Bernard Shaw Theatre.
On the occasion of the release of Ergodos records' first CD, Dubh, featuring recordings of seven young Irish composers performed by Amsterdam-based group, Trio Scordatura, Bob Gilmore (keyboard/electronics with Trio Scordatura), along with two of the composers whose work feature on the disc - Linda Buckley and Judith Ring - talked to Jonathan Grimes about the album and their work.
