For first-time founders, it’s easy to fall in love with your idea and build a company that places you as the hero of the story. Jim Collins, renowned business author and famous for his books, Good To Great and Built To Last, believes that in order to build an enduring company, you have to be willing to do the hard work of building a company that doesn’t solely rely on you. Additionally, you can’t just fall in love with your idea, you need to fall in love with the process of coming up with multiple ones. Collins refers to this concept as “Clock Building,” which I discuss on today’s show.

On this episode of the Transition, I’m joined by Army Veteran, Leadership Coach, and Serial Entrepreneur, Sean Patton, Founder of Stronger Leader Stronger Profits, which helps companies increase their profitability by developing stronger leaders. I met Sean last year when the Bunker Labs Crew flew into Nashville, TN for a team fly-in. After hearing him speak about his journey from the Army, his passion for Brazilian Ju Jitsu, and the challenge of opening up his own gym, I had to get him on the show. After graduating from West Point, Sean spent ten years as an army officer, half of which was in special forces. On the show, Sean discusses how he’s managed to leverage his leadership experience in the military and apply it in the business world through leadership/executive coaching, as well as his experience founding and running multiple jujitsu gyms in the Nashville area.

I tell people that it takes at least three years or so to fully transition, but that's not based on any peer-reviewed data only my personal experience after spending 10 years in the military, five including my time at the Naval Academy Prep School and Annapolis, followed by five in the Marine Corp, for ten years total. Today’s guest, Jessica Van De Vop Jesus, left the Marine Corps as Lieutenant Colonel, in order to follow her passion for Food and Travel. Her first few years post-transition were rough, which she shares intimate details about on the show, for the first time. Through her struggles, Jessica managed to find meaning and purpose in the next stage of her journey, as an Author and Solopreneur, On today’s show, Jessica shares her story and I hope that those of you in the throes of your own transition, whether you’re just getting off of active duty, changing jobs, or making the leap to start a venture, I’m confident you’ll find inspiration in Jessica’s journey.

When I’m not hitting the heavy bag at the IRONBOUND Boxing Academy in Newark, you can find me under a barbell at my CrossFit gym, doing squats, bench presses, and other strength training exercises, something I’m picked up playing football in high school and carried with me into the Marines. While doing research on how to incorporate running into barbell training, I came across today’s guest, Grant Broggi, Founder of The Strength Co, which includes a Brick-and-Mortar Gym, Online Coaching, and a manufacturing arm producing American made plates and other barbell equipment. As an active duty Marine Artillery Officer, Grant jumpstarted his entrepreneurial journey moonlighting as a coach on the weekends, before opening up a gym, and eventually building his strength empire. Shortly after transitioning off of Active duty and into his business full-time, like most, Grant got royally punched in the face due to COVID, eventually forcing him to shut down one of two gyms, but presented the opportunity to start his own manufacturing company. On the show, Grant opens up about how he managed to pull it off, the pains of running a brick-and-mortar gym, and why he believes there’s a future in American-made Iron.

In the military we have a saying that the enemy has a choice. Doesn’t matter how great you think your product or service is or you think it’s for, until you go to market, it’s an educated guess at best. From there, it’s your responsibility to identify whether you’re going to stick to the plan, such as selling craft beer via a subscription service model to willing consumers, or shifting to a business to business model selling beer, snacks, and other CPG items to corporate offices. If that sounds too far off, it’s not, because that is exactly what happened to today’s guest Claude Burns, Founder and CEO of Office Libations, a full-service beverage and snack company that provides beverages and snacks to companies of all sizes. I had a chance to sit down with Claude in person this week, at the Bunkers Lab CEO Circle Fly-in powered by JP Morgan Chase, to hear the origin story of office libations, what it was like to lead the company through a global pandemic when offices no longer needed his services, and what innovation looks like for a small business, when the odds are stacked against you.

Today, we’re celebrating a huge accomplishment here at Bunker Labs, and that’s 100 Episodes in the book for The Transition. I’d like to personally thank each and everyone of you for tuning into this show, and supporting our efforts to build the next generation of veteran military spouse entrepreneurs. I’d also like to give a special shoutout to our audio engineer, CJ Hughes, who works hard behind the scenes to make this show possible and who has been with me from the very beginning. So for today, I thought I would celebrate 100 episodes by flipping the Mike and allowing myself to be interviewed, by one of my closest friends, Glenn Moyer. Glenn reached out to interview me for his MBA class at The University of North Carolina Chaphill, earlier this summer, in order to discuss my entrepreneurial journey. As the saying goes, “the path to success isn’t a straight line. There’s been a lot of pivots, along with bumps and bruises, to get to where I am now, so I thought I’d lift the veil for everyone, by sharing my story.

Today on the Transition, I sit down with Army Veteran and Expert EOS Implementer, Chris Hallberg, Author of The Business Sergeant’s Field Manual: Military Grade Business Execution Without The Yelling and Pushups. Although we’ve already done a crash course on EOS in a previous episode, which is short for The Entrepreneurs Operating System first coined by Gino Wickman, I wanted to revisit it with Chris to share his insights, as someone who helped companies implement EOS for over a decade. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, a business without an operating system is like an undisciplined baby. To get a grip on it and make it run for you, not the other way around, you need an operating system. On the show, Chris walks us through each step of the Traction Framework and how to implement it in your own business.

On today’s show, I talk about the importance of building your own business playbook. As entrepreneurs, so many of us look for external validation and feedback from others, in order to tell us what we should be doing, instead of looking internally and committing to figuring it out ourselves. Nobody knows the ins and outs of your venture, your target market, and how you will succeed. The future of your business doesn’t exist yet, you have to create it, and if your tired of guessing, instead of speaking with authority and conviction, than you have to commit to building your own playbook.

What's up Everybody, welcome to another edition of the transition, a show aimed at demystifying the entrepreneur experience for those of you looking to make the transition from the military into entrepreneurship. I'm your host "IRON" Mike Steadman, the Voice of the Bunker. I'm a Marine Corps Veteran, Social Entrepreneur, and member of the Bunker Labs Branding Team.

In the following episode, I sat down with Marvin Johnson, Founder and CEO of Dashible, a mobile app that connects and builds long-lasting relationships between consumers and local retailers through an integrated deal and loyalty platform. Marvin is a former Navy submarine officer and seasoned tech entrepreneur, with a passion for building innovative products and teams. Dashible isn't Marvin's first time on the entrepreneur roller coaster. He's run the gambit from a bootstrapped entrepreneur to CEO of a venture-backed start-up competing with Paypal, to witnessing the wheels on that same tech startup, fall off. Marvin opens up about what went wrong with his first venture, how overcame depression after things didn't work out, and how he's using the lessons learned, to power his current start-up, Dashible. As always, my hope is that Marvin's transparency and vulnerability, empower you to overcome your own challenges, as you continue your entrepreneurial journey.

In today's episode, I interview Air Force Veteran, Entrepreneur, and Bunker Labs OG, Charlynda Scales, CEO of Mutt Sauce, an all-purpose specialty sauce company founded in memory of her late Grandfather, Charley "Mutt" Ferrel Jr., who made the coveted recipe found in Mutt Sauce's product today. After inheriting the recipe in 2013, Charlynda decided to use her military service and business background to launch the business and distribute the sauce all across the United States. Despite the numerous accolades and awards, she's received, including a 25k Grant From Bob Evans and Damond John, Charlynda opens up about her struggles with imposter syndrome, the challenges of running a small business, and want often feels like a never-ending grind. Although Charlynda and I have crossed paths multiple over the years, we never had an opportunity to have a conversation like on today's show. My hope is that Charlynda's transparency and vulnerability, empower you to overcome your own challenges, as you continue your entrepreneurial journey.

What's up Everybody, welcome to another edition of the transition, a show aimed at demystifying the entrepreneur experience for those of you looking to make the transition from the military into entrepreneurship. I'm your host IRON Mike Steadman, “The Voice of the Bunker,” a Marine Corps Veteran, Social Entrepreneur, and member of the Bunker Labs Team.

In the following episode, I decided to break script from the show’s traditional format, and host an office hour session with you, where I discuss how to set your Annual and Quarterly Goals. As entrepreneurs, we tend to focus on strategy and sett big hairy audacious goals, without an actionable plan on how to accomplish them. It’s one thing to say we want to generate 500k a year in revenue, it’s another thing to host 30 virtual meetups, submit 50 proposals to warm prospects, and offer an affiliate program to orchestrate referrals.

To assist me with this session, I invited Joshua Pomeroy, Army Veteran and CEO of Interim, 2 which provides interim Chief of Staff (CoS) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) for small and midsized businesses that seek to hit their next stage of growth. Strategy is great, but the execution is better. It’s a New Year, we all have dreams and ambitions for our ventures, and we need an actional framework to accomplish them.

I'm your host IRON Mike Steadman a Marine Corps Veteran, Social Entrepreneur, and member of the Bunker Labs Team.

In the following episode, I interview retired army veteran, Jimmy Cox, Founder and CEO of the Military Fresh Network and the Military Fresh Network Consulting, a media company that connects the military community with likeminded individuals and bridges the gap between the American public with those who serve. As a former army recruiter and marketing specialist, Jimmy founded the Military Fresh Network to "show & prove" that veterans can serve our country, yet remain the unique individuals we were created to be. Initially established as an Instagram account highlighting veterans in their element, whether through fitness, business, or simply looking "Fresh" on the gram, the brand has emerged into a full-fledged media company, overseeing multiple products and brands to promote its "Fresh" state of mind. Jimmy is unapologetic in MFN's approach to highlight the fastness of diversity within our nation's military. After not seeing enough representation of black and Latin x culture in the military apparel space, Jimmy and his team decided to create their own apparel and products to bridge the gap. Diversity and Inclusion aren't just buzz words to MFN, it's part of their brand identity. You can see by who's rocking their apparel and who's holding their newly launched "Fresh flask," the freshest and most culturally diverse flask and tumbler company to donate. Jimmy shares insight into the challenges he's faced building MFN, from generating sustainable revenue, to feeling ostracized at veteran entrepreneur networking events. Jimmy doesn't hold back any punches and shares his truth of establishing his own niche in the veteran ecosystem. If you're an entrepreneur looking to launch an apparel company, or just looking to gain more knowledge in general, My hope is that through Jimmy's story, you're able to apply many of the lessons in your own entrepreneurial journey.

In this episode, I interview Don Tobul, An Army Veteran and Founder of OD Greens, a socially-driven company that provides mental health counseling services and workplace training for veterans, leveraging the production of hydroponic produce. Don holds a Masters's in clinical mental health counseling and spent almost 9 years as a mental health counselor with the Department of Veteran Affairs. During this time, Don began experimenting with hydroponic produce as a form of counseling therapy for veterans. By participating in gardening agricultural, alongside fellow veterans, he can help veterans can quiet their minds and find healing. Don opens up about how he successfully transitioned from serving as a mental counselor from the VA, to work on OD Greens Full-time. He talks about how he bootstrapped his venture and how it's adapting to the rapidly changing environment of the COVID-19 Pandemic. On a personal level, it was a pleasure for me to interview Don, whom I met during a small business pitch competition in DC in the spring of 2019. At the time, he wasn't working on his venture full-time, and it was great for me to learn how about his growth since then. If you are looking to launch a social-driven venture, in a specific niche, this episode is for you. I hope that you enjoy hearing from Don and that this episode helps accelerate you on your own entrepreneurial journey.

In this episode, I sat down with Anthony Gantt, an Active Duty Marine Officer and Founder of At Ease Rentals, a one-stop-shop for short-term rentals that are pre-approved for reimbursement when used by military and federal employees. Anthony and his team are committed to making the process of moving as painless as possible for the approximately 450,000 military and federal employees assigned station transfers each year. Anthony shares insights into the challenges of launching a business, while balancing his active duty responsibilities and family life. What I find particularly insightful about Anthony's story, is his ability to launch a technology platform, despite having the traditional background common in Today's start-up space. Anthony comes from humble beginnings, serving time in the enlisted ranks, before going to college and earning a commission. Despite having a non-tech background, Anthony refuses to take no for an answer and learned everything he could about launching a start-up. He immersed himself in Austin's emerging entrepreneurial ecosystem, read countless books, including Brad Fields "Venture Deals," and launched his own crowdfunding campaign, where his team has already raised over 150k. Anthony is an inspiration and in this episode, he doesn't hold anything back. I hope you enjoy this fun and light-hearted Episode, and that you find some nuggets to accelerate you on your own entrepreneurial journey.
