Paul Natorp is Heidegger’s unknown teacher. While Husserl is well known Paul Natorp has today been nearly forgotten. A critical member of the Marburg School of Neokantianism Natorp exercised tremendous influence on Heidegger. Natorp understood the fundamental crisis of Europe and fought to find a way out in Poesis - creative Reason (which Kant failed to see).
In this lecture I read and translate and comment from Natorp’s book “Philosophische Systematik”.
Besides Kant, Natorp responds to Hegel and the attempt to think without presupposition. But sense is always already there yet not simply given!

Ivo's book offers a phenomenologically informed reading of some fundamental positions of the philosophical tradition. Its objective is not that of giving an exhaustive account of the thinking of any single philosopher, much less of the trajectory of philosophy as a whole; rather, the aim is to retrace a few key moments in the course of philosophical enquiry, from its outset to its accomplishment in Nietzsche’s metaphysics, with a focus on the main motive of that enquiry: the always new attempt to establish a sufficient knowledge of the ultimate principle on which to build a human »ethos«.

In this video I read E.M. Forster's most prescient short story "The Machine Stops". This short story is our version of Plato's Cave. Human beings are reduced to lumps of flesh constantly on the lookout for ideas to affect them. This is also a warning for all those engaged in "online philosophy" or however we want to refer to it. For we must not become masters of shadows.

We should stop referring to it as a “business” mentality. The medieval guild model was more organic, entrepreneurial, and financially sustainable. It lasted for hundreds of years, through plagues and major wars. The bureaucratic/technocratic model (now collapsing) is vulnerable to the first mid-scale social/economic disruption."

Ever since its publication in 1797 On the Supposed Right to Lie from Benevolent Motives (SRL) has sparked outrage and confusion not only amongst those who oppose Kant’s approach to ethics. The crucial question for all those broadly interested in Kantian ethics—either to defend or to defeat it—is whether Kant’s moral system is, as laid out in the Groundwork, thus rigid that it demands of moral agents rather to betray a friend than to lie a (potential) murderer. The problem, however, of that debate is the ignorance of Kant’s distinction between lying in the ethical and in the juridical sense. SRL, I aim to show, portrays a case of lying in the juridical sense. Applying the various formulations of the Categorical Imperative (possible if SRL were a case of lying in the ethical sense) yields confusing results at best. In this paper I thus argue that much of the confusion stems precisely from interpreters neglect to account for Kant’s clear distinction of at least two forms of lying.

I try to define here what the meta-crisis of modernity is: the split of the unity of thinking and being. At the same time I argue that it is futile to find solutions to the problem. Instead, we need to learn how to think together being and thought.

In this lecture I argue that Nietzsche stumbles upon the profundity of nihilism through his critique of the Christian moral hypothesis. Nihilism is the uncanniest guest of Europe and must be overcome by striding through it. The topic of Beyond Good and Evil then is nihilism and suffering and possible ways out of nihilism.
