Welcome to Lessons Learned a new that I have been considering for some time. Before we begin todayâs premiere let me tell you what I hope the premise of this podcast series will be aboutâ¦
In the summer of 2014, my mother at the young age of 96 ½ suffered a stroke that left her blind and confined to bed for the rest of her life, an additional 11 weeks. It was during these 11 weeks when I moved into with my mother to oversee her care that my eyes were opened to many things I did not know â or at least I thought I didnât know.
I was lucky to meet my motherâs neighbors and learn about her interactions with them, and some were women her age who attended elementary or high school with her and had stories to share bringing me one step closer to my momma.
We all learn lessons and this podcast is about the Lessons we ha Learned through our parents, teachers, clergy, siblings, and friends.

Traditional folk and classic country band The Faux Paws upcoming show in Cambridge on your radar â they'll be at Argyle Brewing Companyâs Cambridge Depot on August 26.
Today Andrew and I discussed the Band, the past - the present - and the future.
" From raging fiddle tunes to saxophone solos and unrequited love songs, the music of The Faux Paws would be hard to pin down with standard genre descriptions. The trioâs contagious groove and feel-good melting pot folk music have been honed over ten years of playing together and is the sound of three close friends (two of which happen to be brothers), who feel a musical kinship that transcends any stylistic limitations. Now, after nearly a decade of music-making, the bi-coastal trio is releasing their self-titled debut album The Faux Paws.

A very special thanks to David Zimmer, Meet the Biz, (https://meetthebiz.net/) for referring Consuelo to newclevelandradio.net.
When you live in a world where ability is not determined by what some may see as your disability, you can be anyone or anything you choose. Consuelo Flores is a DEIB professional (Understanding diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in the workplace is a valuable mindset to attract top talent and retain them) with 20 years of experience working with diverse talent in front of & behind the camera and extensive knowledge of the hiring practices in entertainment, especially regarding BIPOC. (The acronym BIPOC refers to black, indigenous, and other people of color and aims to emphasize the historic oppression of black and indigenous people.)

When you listen to "We Are the NightHawks," I believe you will feel the energy, the passion, and the talent that Lecco Morris brought together in this project. Since I heard the first note and Kimberly's voice I have been mesmerized. This project came together in 2020 while all the musicians were connected virtually. You will swear there is a full orchestra playing on this masterpiece - however, a small group of musicians came together taking turns while still in quarantine to record/perform/and create a masterpiece at Dreamland Studios. https://www.dreamlandrecording.com/
Kimberly and id talk about her music, her voice, and the project and now it is your turn to listen and love this music.

Today's guest was Deena Nyer Mendlowitz, a Clevelander who brings humor into the Mental Health Issues that plague many of us. There once was a time we didn't speak of Depression, Suicidal Thinking, Anxiety, or any one of the 200 + forms that many of us are unaware of. However, it is important not only to talk about this but to become aware of them so we may be a kinder more gentle society and learn to stop JUDGING and Labeling People. Deena speaks first hand of her experiences as well as her use of comedy to help her get through the maze of life.

Natalie Oden is not just beautiful but she is amazing. Diagnosed at age 3 with Autism she has learned to live with some of the difficulties while following her passion to act, and model. Since she was very young she thought about acting and interesting it would be to play the part of someone other than herself. When asked what role she would like to achieve she said, the part of the villain, a role which is the complete opposite of her calm demeanor.
Natalie shares how COVID has affected her being somewhat isolated this past year as well as losing her father to the virus that she and her family know all too well is real. Check out Natalie's website and you may want to consider her passion and talent for the next movie, TV series, or Broadway play!

Johanna Henz is an inspiration -
I was diagnosed with a form of Leukemia after being exhausted for two years, thinking I was just "tired all the time."
I was anemic, but that was never addressed by my doctor. I thought maybe I was depressed, though I couldn't think why! But I had a lot of the symptoms - exhausted, unmotivated, irritable, etc. I asked for and was put on anti-depressants but they didn't help with the exhaustion. I chalked it up to being busy - working full-time, two young kids, etc. - but finally was examined by someone I worked with (I was the director of a health care organization at the time) and after some time and many tests, found out about leukemia.
Ultimately I had a bone marrow transplant, after which I developed a rare (and I mean RARE) complication that shut my lungs down and I ended up having a life-saving double lung transplant six months after the bone marrow transplant.
Long story short - who thinks to go to the doctor for being tired?! Certainly not me. But we know when something is not right, and advocating for ourselves - and being persistent - is sometimes the only way we end up getting our answers.

Today was a special day - not only did I get to talk baseball but I shared my love and connection for the game with one of my childhood girlfriend's brother, Lawrence Katz.
Lawrence S. Katz has written numerous articles about baseball for publications including Sports Collectors Digest, The Baseball Research Journal, and Primo Magazine. He contributed a chapter entitled "When Immortals Returned to the Minors" for The Perfect Game, an anthology published by the Taylor Publishing Company in 1993 and by Barnes & Noble in 1995.
This work is a revised edition of his book Baseball in 1939: The Watershed Season of the National Pastime, published by McFarland and Company in 1995 and 2012. The book, and his abstract titled âBaseball & Cultural Change in the Late 1930s,â are included in the Baseball Hall of Fame Library collection.
Katz has spoken on a variety of baseball subjects, including Depression Era baseball at the Baseball in Literature and Culture Symposium at Indiana State University, the recent return of minor league baseball to the Detroit area, and the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League - featured in the movie A League of their Own - at a dinner honoring former player Rose Gacioch.
He realized his dream of appearing on a major league pitching mound before a packed house when he sang the National Anthem with a choral group at Tiger Stadium in Detroit in 1988.
He has been a member of The Society for American Baseball Research since 1983.
Katz received his J.D. from Wayne State University Law School in 1972. He lives in Michigan with his wife, author Karen Tintori Katz.

Michele Samit says: "Iâm a talker, but ever since I was a little girl, people tell me their secrets. Even if I donât want to hear them, they share things with me. Their anxieties, their hopes, their fears, their darkest secrets. Everyone wanted to share something with me, even those who initially said they didnât."
