Dr. Malcolm Manners, Retired Professor of Horticultural Science
On this episode of the Rose Chat Podcast, host Teresa Byington welcomes Dr. Malcolm Manners, recently retired Professor of Horticultural Science at Florida Southern College. During his academic career, Dr. Manners specialized in fruit production, roses, and propagation techniques for a wide range of crops. In 2013, he was honored with the “Great Rosarian of the World” award in recognition of his long-standing work on rose mosaic virus disease and his contributions as an educator in rose culture.
Since retiring, Dr. Manners has relocated from Florida to the Midwest, where he is now establishing a new garden in a climate and environment very different from the one he left behind.
In this episode, we check in with Dr. Manners to hear how the transition is going, what he’s learning in this new gardening setting and what he’s doing differently.

Mark Mason Taylor is a consulting rosarian and strategic development chair for the Utah Rose Society. He is QWEL Certified licensed landscaper and was the American Rose Society “Rising Star” award recipient. His day job is as a Data Scientist for Northrop Grumman Space Systems. In 2021 Mark founded a worker’s co-op committed to water conservation. Perfume Punk specializes in low-water rose gardens and as of 2024, the co-op has planted over 2,000 roses and saved over 300,000,000 gallons of water. Yes, that’s 300 Million!

Gaye is also the study liaison between the Houston Rose Society and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in connection with Earth - Kind® Rose Research – the largest environmental rose research study done in the U.S. Gaye is an entertaining speaker and an avid writer of more than 300 articles that have been published in local, state, national and international magazines and newspapers. She has co-authored a peer-reviewed journal article on Earth-Kind Roses published in 2009 in Floriculture & Ornamental Biotechnology, a chapter in The Sustainable Rose Garden, and authored a chapter in the book, Gulf Coast Gardening. He was an integral part of David Austin Roses for 35 years and at the firm’s headquarters in Albrighton where he was the font of knowledge for all matters relating to roses. Michael has played an important part in the development and popularisation of English Roses and therefore has intimate knowledge of all of the 200 plus English Roses bred and introduced by David Austin Roses. His enthusiasm is infectious and his knowledge of roses is encyclopaedic, especially for the species roses, the old roses, the climbers and ramblers, the best modern roses and of course David Austin’s English Roses. He is particularly enthusiastic about the very varied fragrances to be found in roses having worked side-by-side with famed “rose nose” Robert Calkin. As a garden designer, he is known for dense romantic beds whether purely roses or mixed in with perennials. He has designed many rose gardens and borders around the world of varying sizes, both public and private. Public gardens include the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Queen Mary’s Rose Garden in Regent’s Park, Hampton Court Palace, Wynyard Hall, Trentham Gardens, and the David Austin garden near Osaka in Japan. Prior to joining David Austin Roses in 1985, he worked at various rubber, cocoa, and oil palm estates in Papua New Guinea, Sabah and the Solomon Islands. THE RESEARCH JOURNEY OF SUSTAINABLE ROSESDr. David ByrneProfessor & Basye Endowed Chair in Rose Genetics Department Texas A&M University On today's show, we take a look at where we've been and where we are going with research on sustainable roses with one of the world's leading experts Dr. David Byrne. ABOUT DR. BYRNE David Byrne, a Professor in Horticultural Sciences at Texas A&M University, currently holds the Basye Endowed Chair in Rose Genetics. Since 1983, he has run the Stone Fruit Breeding Program and has developed over 20 medium- to low-chill peaches and nectarines which has expanded the cultivar choice for this adaptation zone to include both subacid and traditional acid flavors, a range of flesh colors (white, yellow/orange and red), and donut type fruit. In the early 1990s, working with Dr. Robert Basye, a rose breeder and retired Professor of Mathematics, he began the Rose Breeding and Genetics Program which was enhanced by the donation of the breeding stock from the Father of the Miniature Rose, Ralph Moore. He along with his colleague, Dr. Oscar Riera-Lizarazu breeds to develop well-adapted sustainable garden roses (resistant to RRD, black spot, cercospora, and heat tolerant). He led the “Combating Rose Rosette Disease” SCRI project, worked with the SCRI “RosBREED 2” project on black spot resistance, leads the ‘Tools for Genomics-Assisted Breeding in Polyploids’ and the “Developing Sustainable Rose Landscapes” projects, and chairs the National Clean Plant Network for Roses. Ongoing projects involve the development and integration of computational breeding tools to effectively utilize genomic information in polyploid crops. His collaborative work with private rose breeders to develop advanced breeding tools to introgress disease resistance and other traits will lead to a more rapid conversion of the commercial rose germplasm into a disease resistant background. Over the past decade, he has mentored 20 graduate students, published about 60 articles, given about 140 talks, and released 23 Prunus and 6 Rosa cultivars. THE MANY FACES OF ROSE ROSETTE DISEASE:A Virus of Disguises Gaye Hammond, Master Rosarian and Past President, Houston Rose Society Rosarians are somewhat familiar with Rose Rosette Disease. We know it is dangerous, deadly and contagious but outside that, we may not be familiar enough with its symptoms to know what is, and more importantly, what is not RRD. Involvement in both the National Clean Plant Network-Roses group and the national Rose Rosette Task Force has allowed Gaye to stay on the cutting edge of the virus. Gaye is an evaluator for the Center for Invasive Species (University of Georgia) studying thousands of photographic submissions submitted for possible RRD symptoms. Between July and September 2022, she evaluated more than 1,000 submissions. Through this process Gaye realized that there is a tremendous misunderstanding about RRD. In this program, Gaye will share the newest and exciting developments in the fight against RRD and its vectoring mite, as well as help rosarians correctly determine what symptoms are caused by RRD and symptoms that are from some other (mostly curable) cause. My love of roses started as a young girl growing up in Baltimore, Maryland. I went with my parents to Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania and came home with three roses Peace, Tropicana and Chrysler Imperial. After moving to Houston with my family in 1989 I started growing roses more seriously with the help of the Houston Rose Society. I feel that one of the most important factors that I can attribute to growing roses successfully in my area has been the articles in the HRS newsletter, The Rose-Ette and the mentoring I have received from the consulting rosarians when I joined the Society. In 2012 I became a Consulting Rosarian. I enjoy teaching about growing roses and I have given many presentations to gardening groups in the Houston area. I have served on the board of the Houston Rose Society as the publicity chairperson. I am currently serving as the president of the Houston Rose Society. Besides the satisfaction I receive from growing beautiful roses in my garden, roses have helped my meet and connect with so many wonderful people who have become very special friends. Lynn Hunt...
I’m not sure when my love of roses started, perhaps before the age of two. My Grandfather had several roses in his Miami garden. I have a photo of me at 14 months stopping to sniff a blossom. Later, one of my neighbors planted a lovely crescent-shaped rose garden in his yard. He was always giving friends a few blooms and I wanted to learn more about how to grow them. So, I joined the Tidewater Rose Society and the ARS in 1979. The rest as they say, is history! I have loved my time as an ARS Consulting rosarian (now Emeritus) and as an accredited Horticultural Judge. You meet so many wonderful people and make lifelong friends as a rosarian. I have been honored to judge roses in England and Australia, and I served on the permanent panel of the Biltmore International Rose Trials. I’ve written about gardening for about three decades in publications from Fine Gardening and Horticulture to my own award-winning blog, The Dirt Diaries. I’ve also been blessed to have a wonderful professional career as a writer and broadcast producer. My interest in journalism started early, just like my love of roses. I was interviewing local celebrities at age 9, and snagged an exclusive interview with The Beatles in 1964 when they arrived in Miami to perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. I was 13 at the time, and star reporter of my junior high school newspaper.
Writing, roses, and of course, a wonderful family ... A combo that has made my life very sweet. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Jason Croutch is the co-owner of Fraser Valley Rose Farm, a nursery specializing in those unique, hard-to-find, and historical varieties of roses that are no longer readily available in the Canadian market. Located on beautiful Nicomen Island, the rose farm is a blank canvas for Jason and his wife Lisa to grow mixed plantings of roses, shrubs, perennials and whatever else happens to strike them as useful and beautiful.
Following a 20 year career in retail management, Jason decided it was time to do something more meaningful with his life: grow plants. Jason attended the Kwantlen Polytechnic University greenhouse production program, and then took an entry-level job at Valleybrook Gardens growing perennials. He worked his way into the job of head grower before finally taking the leap to run Fraser Valley Rose Farm full-time. Jason is also quite active on Youtube, producing videos aimed at inspiring and sharing knowledge with backyard growers, budding rosarians, and garden enthusiasts of all kinds.

For those of us wanting to visit the gardens, Dr. Manners has shared some tips on the best time to do so!
The first two weeks in April are the very best, with nearly the whole garden in bloom. Usually, late November is pretty good, especially for Teas. From April through mid-February, we always have quite a lot of good blooms. Parking Notes: Visitors could park in any lot not specifically marked as reserved for faculty/staff/handicapped, but probably the best lot to try can be GPS mapped as 915 Frank Lloyd Wright Way, Lakeland. That's a fake address, which leads to the entrance to the parking lot. If you use the college's official address (111 Lake Hollingsworth Drive), it will just take you along the lake, and there's nothing really there, certainly no good parking.
ABOUT DR. MALCOLM MANNERS... Dr. Malcolm has been teaching at Florida Southern College since 1981 and specializes in fruit production, roses, and techniques of propagation of various crops. Since 1996, he has participated in 14 U S A I D - funded Farmer to Farmer volunteer missions to developing countries. This program works to help alleviate extreme poverty through education on better crop production methods. Countries he's worked with Ethiopia, Egypt, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and many more. Dr. Manners is also active in the preservation of heirloom genetic resources in roses and is a trustee of the Heritage Rose Foundation. In 2013 he was awarded the "Great Rosarian of the World" for his many years of work on rose mosaic virus disease and as an educator in the field of rose culture. In 2006, Kristen Smith, a graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Horticulture from The Pennsylvania State University, began employment at The Conard-Pyle Company, now known as Star® Roses and Plants. She has been working in the position of New Plants Coordinator for about 13 years and enjoys coordinating the rose trials in West Grove, PA as well as at external trial sites around the country. Her favorite part of the job is evaluating new roses for future release. She has recently stepped into the role of Rose Evaluation Manager for the company where she will be the primary contact for rose breeders and responsible for the product development of roses.
