Imagine if corporations could place adverts for their products inside your dreams. It may sound like far-fetched science fiction, but amazingly, science and technology has reached the point where this possibility may be around the corner.
Earlier this year, the beer company Molson-Coors tried an experiment based on cutting edge research known as 'targeted dream activation'. Amazingly participants reported dreaming more of Coors beer after consuming audio and video content specifically designed to 'induce' images of beer into the participant's dreams.
Concerned about the possibilities of dreams becoming the playground for unscrupulous marketers, or even as a means of societal manipulation, a group of sleep and dream researchers recently published an open letter, describing the ethical issues at stake, if we longer have sovereign control of our own dreams. Dr Sara C. Mednick is Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of California, Irvine and author of the book, Take a Nap! Change your life. . She is passionate about understanding how the brain works through her research into sleep and cognition. Dr. Mednick’s seven-bedroom sleep lab at UCI works literally around-the-clock to discover methods for boosting cognition through a range of different interventions including napping, brain stimulation with electricity, sound and light, as well as pharmacological interventions. Her research findings have been published in such leading scientific journals as Nature Neuroscience and The Proceedings from the National Academy of Science, and covered by all major media outlets. She received a PhD in Psychology from Harvard University, and then completed a postdoc at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and UC San Diego.

When we're seeking solutions to health problems we generally look to doctors and scientists for the best advice. But what happens when the experts don't actually have all the answers?
This is often the case when we talk about sleep supplements. This rapidly growing market comprises a dizzying array of off-the-shelf products blending plant extracts, micronutrients, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, all of which purport to be able to help alleviate sleep problems in one way or the other.
The problems stem from the fact that whilst there exists a modest body of scientific literature showing potential efficacy for solving some sleep issues, the sleep supplement industry - devoid of regulatory restrictions - is forging ahead to satisfy the enormous demand for novel, non-pharmaceutical based sleep solutions.

Pretty much every week, we get an email from a new cannabis startup, promoting their latest CBD or THC remedy to treat any number of health conditions, including sleep problems.
This boom in new, legal cannabis products is the result of recent legislation to start the process of widespread marijuana decriminalisation, and eventually full legalisation. But whilst the consumer demand is fuelling massive growth in the global cannabis industry, currently, there's little, verging on zero clinical evidence to firmly substantiate many of the health claims made by the new wave of cannabis products hitting the market.

So much so, that earlier this year, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) issued a position statement, outlining a roadmap for sleep professionals to start engaging now with the multifaceted ways that AI will inevitably impact on patient care, diagnostics, staff allocation, treatment protocols and much more.
We talk to Dr Cathy Goldstein, neurologist, and chair of the AASM's committee on AI about how artificial intelligence will shape the field of sleep medicine in coming years, and also how Dr Goldstein's own research into longitudinal sleep tracking with consumer wearables may also play a role in expanding our vision for how we manage sleep health outside of the clinic.

Does a lack of sleep lead to a higher risk of obesity? Or does being overweight lead to more likelihood of sleep problems? Around the world, scientists have been trying to unravel this chicken and egg problem for decades. What's clear so far is that to understand the associations between sleep loss, diet, obesity and weight gain, sleep scientists have to confront a dizzying array of knowledge domains including psychology, neuroscience, epidemiology, genetics, endocrinology and more.
Today, in a two-part episode we speak to associate professor Christian Benedict, a sleep research who has spent almost two decades in the field and now heads up his own team of researchers and doctors and Uppsala University.
We discuss the many associations that we currently know about sleep, diet and obesity, including how sleep loss impairs our cognitive ability to make good food choices, how sleep plays a role in our body's energy expenditure equation, the role of food in our circadian system, how 'hunger hormones' are impacted by sleep loss, which diets are more/less impactful on our sleep patterns and a whole bunch of other stuff. Christian Benedict Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in neuroscience at Uppsala University where he heads up a team of scientists at the Benedict lab, which studies the effects of circadian disruption and sleep loss on health and performance, with a particular focus on the relationship between sleep loss and metabolism. In recent years melatonin has exploded in popularity as a 'wonder drug' - a safe, natural supplement for helping with sleep problems. Whilst there's lots of scientific evidence to back up many of the claims, the fact that melatonin, at least in the United States is classed as a food supplement, rather than a prescription medication, has led to a lack of consistent public health messaging, and a great deal of confusion amongst the millions who take melatonin supplements on a regular basis.
In this episode we try to cut through the marketing hype, dispel some myths, and find out what the real facts are about melatonin and its role in sleep, as we speak to Professor Helen Burgess, one of the leading melatonin researcher in the United States.

Helen Burgess, Ph.D. is aProfessor in the Department of Psychiatry and Co-Director of the Sleep and Circadian Rhythms Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan. Her scientific research examines basic sleep and circadian rhythm mechanisms and also sleep and circadian rhythms in the context of various clinical disorders including alcohol use disorders, autism, chronic pain, depression, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, HIV, jet lag, migraine, shift work, sleep disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder. Prefer to read, download the full episode transcript here For the last few decades, a grass-roots movement across the United States has been raising awareness and campaigning to change the situation in many schools, whereby early bell times are forcing kids to get out of bed extremely early in order to make it through the school gates on time.
With bus times scheduled as early as 5 am, as well as causing disruption to family lives, early school start times fail to recognize the vast body of scientific research demonstrating that adolescent sleep needs are fundamentally different to adults and younger children.
In 2011, Dr Terra Ziporyn Snider started a petition to lobby the government to recognise the biological incompatibility between early school times and adolescent sleep needs. This resulted in the founding of Start School Later, which brought together all of the grass-roots activists across the States, to join with researchers and health professionals to further raise awareness and bring about change regarding the relationship between sleep and school hours.

Today we're going to talk about a pretty hot topic, “Start School Later.” Couldn't really have anyone more qualified to talk about the subject. Dr. Snider is one of the cofounders of the movement. TS: It is my pleasure. There is nothing I like more than discussing this particular topic and thank you for inviting me to speak.
JM: My pleasure. So what we're gonna do now, we're gonna assume that some people have heard about the Start School Later movement but we're gonna not make the assumption that everybody has heard about it.
So we're going to give it a bit of a background to this whole subject of adolescent sleep and teen sleep. We're going to be talking about this movement that started a few decades ago to try to tackle this problem by changing some of the very very early school start times in the S...
Getting a child to sleep through the night is one of the biggest challenges that parents face. In recent years, online wars have erupted between parents who advocate for behavioural sleep training methods and those who choose 'baby-led' parenting styles.
Much of the antagonism stems from the misunderstanding that sleep training is synonymous with so-called 'Cry It Out' techniques (aka extinction), most famously popularised by Dr Richard Ferber. But as our guest Dr Craig Canapari explains in this episode, sleep training encompasses much more than extinction methods, and includes a wide array of strategies and techniques for tackling sleep problems in babies, toddlers and even school-age kids.

We all know what it's like to get out of the 'wrong side of bed'. Grumpiness, short temper, slow thinking - these are all traits associated with lack of sleep, or poor quality sleep.
But a mounting body of evidence shows us that poor sleep can also affect our moral and ethical behaviour, our basic sense of what's right and wrong. Indeed studies have shown that sub-optimal sleep can increase the likelihood of people cheating, lying and even abusive behaviour.

When it comes to treating insomnia, we're usually told that there are no quick fixes. Although a relatively recent development, the recommended first-line treatment for insomnia is usually cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT-I), a course of treatment which, although highly effective, takes several weeks to complete.
But in the past 10 years, researchers at Flinders University have been researching and testing a novel behavioural therapy for insomnia called Intensive Sleep Retraining which, incredibly, can be administered during a single 24-hour period.
In this episode we talk to Hannah Scott one of the researchers at Flinders, about the theoretical underpinnings behind Intensive Sleep Retraining (ISR), its administration, and how ISR is beginning to make its way out of the sleep lab and into the hands of consumers.

Hannah Scott is a sleep researcher and PhD Candidate at Flinders University. She was awarded her Bachelor of Psychology (Honours – First Class) from Flinders University in 2016. In just 10 years, ASMR has grown from a fringe Youtube trend into a mainstream cultural phenomenon, boasting billions of video views, and even a Superbowl commercial.
Despite millions claiming that ASMR induces relaxation and helps them to get to sleep, there is still only a tiny body of scientific research to lend any credence to this often bizarre phenomenon.

Full Transcript Jeff Mann: 01:36 Good morning. I'm sitting here today with Dr. Guy Leschziner and he's very kindly invited me down to Nuffield House, which is the location of the Sleep Disorders Centre at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in London. Thanks very much. And good morning Guy.
Guy Leschziner: 01:53 Morning.
Jeff Mann: 01:54 Let me give you a brief introduction. Guy is a consultant neurologist at the Sleep Disorders Centre at Guy's and St Thomas'. You're the clinical lead, is that right? So you head up the clinical team here. He's also a reader in neurology at Kings College and you do clinics here in neurology and sleep disorders and epilepsy. You also lecture and you've got lots and lots of research interests in various sleep disorders.
If that's not enough, also in the last couple of years, Guy has also been heavily involved in some public education projects. One of them we're here to talk about specifically, which is a new book. It's a great book, called The Nocturnal Brain. We'll talk a little bit more about that later. And also you've recently done a three part series on BBC Radio Four and a TV series, the Secrets of Sleep. Now, how do you manage to fit all that in?
Guy Leschziner: 02:49 The answer to that is with great difficulty. I think it's always a bit of a juggling act and certainly it's a case of prioritizing certain projects at any one time. So I think probably everything suffers including personal life, but it's just a case of trying to achieve that right balance.
Jeff Mann: 03:09 So it's probably an impossible question, what's a typical day for the clinical lead at Guys?
Guy Leschziner: 03:15 The typical day is much like any other consultant really. I do clinics and I do ward rounds on the neurology side. Some management issues, particularly in terms of dealing with a very big service like the Sleep Disorder service here. We've got, I think at last count 15 or 16 doctors of which the vast majority are consultants that work within the sleep disorder centre.
03:43 So you can imagine that when you're running a clinical service trying to get commercial and research trials going and all the management that comes with being within a large bureaucratic organization like the NHS, that keeps you pretty busy.
Jeff Mann: 03:59 So I wasn't aware, I'm actually just down the road from here. I'm two stops on the metro, but this is one of the largest sleep units in Europe, I believe.
Guy Leschziner: 04:07 I think that it's very difficult to get figures,

These are like the problems that need to be solved if we're going to have a situation where consumers are able to buy a device to monitor their sleep and be confident what is telling them is actually what it's doing. But also from the research side and medicine are able to rely on these devices as well and have some kind of structure and framework where they're not guessing.
So some of the problems are, there's no standards for validating, for designing studies. So briefly, you know, how do we start to tackle that situation?

Jesse's a a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, can you give us a little background to your academic life and how you got involved in sleep?
Jesse Cook: 02:49 Yeah, absolutely. So I was an undergraduate at the University of Arizona in Tucson and I joined the late Dr. Richard Bootzin's sleep laboratory and spent a couple of years as a research assistant under his guidance and really fell in love with the field of sleep.
I didn't realize initially how vast the topic was and the implications that it had on so many different aspects of life, whether it's performance, health, your day to day mood, all sorts of things.
It really just invigorated me to continue on. And so upon graduating,

Commercial jet travel has been around since the 1950's. But as well as revolutionising the way humans were able to traverse the globe, it brought an unforeseen consequence - jet lag.
Jet lag is a physiological condition that arises from the disruption to our circadian rhythms when travelling east to west across different time zones. For 200,000 years, humans have evolved to live in synchrony with the natural 24 hour cycle of day and night.
When these cycles are disrupted, for instance by crossing the globe to the other side of the world, it plays havoc with our health, causing an array of problems, not just to our sleep, but also digestion, hormone regulation, body temperature, cognitive function and many other factors.
Despite all of the progress we've made in science and medicine in the last , up until now, there's never been a reliable, effective treatment for travellers to combat jet lag, and people have relied on hacks and tricks to mitigate the effects, for instance with sleeping pills, staying awake, or just attempting to power through the debilitating symptoms of fatigue and circadian disruption.
However, in today's podcast we talk to an entrepreneur who has teamed up with one of the world's leading scientists in combating the effects of jet lag. Together they have developed a new app, Timeshifter, which is based on decades of research into how timed light exposure can be used to shift an individual's body clock.

Last year, the European Union proposed putting a permanent end to Daylight Saving Time (DST), the twice yearly practice of changing the clocks in order to maximise the amount of daylight during longer winter evenings.
But apart from the discussion around the economic advantages or disadvantages of DST, there's been little public debate, or enquiry into what's arguably a much more important factor - the widespread health impacts of disrupting our circadian clocks twice a year.
The most obvious impact of DST is how it affects our sleep patterns. And indeed, studies have suggested many associations between fatigue related accidents and reduced cognitive functions around the time of the clocks changing.
However, new research, in the field of circadian medicine is revealing that widespread circadian disruptions such as those caused by daylight saving time could be having a far wider impact on our health than previously thought.
In this episode we speak to researcher and sleep scientist Professor Miguel Meira e Cruz about a new report he has co-authored which examines the many detrimental effects of daylight saving time on our circadian timing system.

CBT-I (cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia) has in recent years become a first line recommended treatment in many countries for treating sleep problems that would have previously been tackled with prescription meds.
The reason for the rise in popularity of CBT-I is that studies have repeatedly shown positive, lasting effects that when patients successfully complete a course of treatment.

In the 21st century, napping is making a resurgence. A mounting body of research is slowly starting to counter the age-old stigmas that napping is something fit only for pre-schoolers, the elderly, or the work-shy.
Some of the world's biggest companies like Google are embracing this sleep science as a means of boosting productivity, creative thinking, memory, cognition and combatting the general effects of fatigue in the workplace.
In addition, the world of elite sports is starting to understand how longer naps can be used to stimulate additional recovery in the daytime, allowing for more flexible training schedules.

Neil Stanley: Thanks so much for joining us this morning Neil. Can I, can I just ask you before we get into the nitty gritty, in your view, have you seen the amount of research and sleep science increase over the years?
00:44 Neil Stanley: No, absolutely. I mean I've been in this game for 37 years now and when I started one journal published papers about sleep, which was called Sleep, and there was sort of pretty much one textbook which was The Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine.
And now there's an absolute deluge of sleep information. I mean, there's tens of sleep journals, but the other thing that perhaps has changed is that papers pertaining to sleep aer published pretty much across the board.
And this is, this is of course a problem to try and keep on top of the field because, you know, whilst I am subscribing to the sleep journals, you can't subscribe to every journal. And so important information is coming out in an obscure to me as a sleep expert, obscure journals. And so you really do have to try and keep abreast of the information.
3:35 And so say 37 years ago, maybe a hundred hundred and 50 papers the year were published in sleep. Now it seems like there's 100 a week being published.
And what's interesting is, although there's all this information is actually making the field more complex rather than clearer, which I think the idea was to try and find out, you know, why we sleep, how we sleep when we sleep etc.
But all we're doing is making it vastly more difficult to actually find the answer. And that's one of the great challenges. And one of the reasons why the field is so very, very interesting.But I don't think we're any better understanding. We have much more information, but we have just about as much understanding. Unfortunately,

[00:46] Jeff Mann (JM) : So today we're going to talk about a topic is very important to the subject of sleep. We're going to talk about mattresses and we're going to talk about the buying decisions behind choosing a mattress and the different types of mattresses and to give a bit of context to the discussion, we have to look at what's happened in the mattress industry in the last five years. How Casper disrupted the mattress industry Now, just as companies like Uber, companies like Airbnb and Amazon has revolutionized taxis, hotels and retail shopping. Well the mattress industry which is worth tens of billions of dollars, has undergone his own technological revolution. This started in 2014 with a company called Casper, who invented what's now called the bed in a box model.
Instead of having to go to a physical retail store and lying down on a mattress and trying it out, you can now go online and choose what you want, click a button and then your mattress will turn up on the doorstep vacuum packed and nicely packaged, which is, which is great. It's really convenient. You save money because these companies not having to pay overheads for physical retail stores.
01:55 However, buying a mattress is not like buying a TV or a toaster. A mattress is a very tactile experience and it's crucial to the quality of your sleep. If you get it wrong, you're not going to sleep well. So what do we do about that? If companies like Casper and their competitors have wiped out all the mattress stores and there's nowhere left to go to try anything out, well you have to make better, more informed decisions.

Kurt: I'm doing fine thank you.
Jeff: I'm going to really try and pick your brains today. Before we get into the question and answer, I like to give guests the opportunity to what I call an elevator pitch and now I just mentioned you've created this platform called ZMax. Now, in a succinct way, because it's a very sophisticated platform that you've created, can you just give us a very brief overview what your platform does? Description of ZMax platform Kurt: So, ZMax is a sleep acquisition and analysis system. It consists of both hardware and software. The hardware is a comfortable headband that you put on your head before you go to sleep and the software is a toolset for displaying data, that is acquired and for analyzing features of sleep.
Some of the applications of ZMax for exemplar in sleep research, sleep researchers across Europe use ZMax to capture data from their participants in their sleep studies.
For example; the Stockholm University and Karolinska Institute, Radboud University, Netherlands Harrison Institute, in Amsterdam with Dr Van Someron. Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry, University of Freiburg, University of Essex, University of Leeds.
Another application that comes to mind is lucid dreaming. ZMax has stimulation capabilities. So, for people that are interested in lucid dreaming ZMax is the most accurate EEG based sleep cue delivery system that's available.
It's also scriptable, the another one is biofeedback and neurofeedback. So, for example; ZMax captures the amount of oxygen in your blood and your heart rate movement and the muscle tension in your face. So, from these things, as you can see on our website as well, you can create relaxation setups and biofeedback software.

So, Kurt can you tell us a bit about your journey into creating ZMax and how you came up with the initial idea for the platform and how you developed ZMax and where it is now? I forget about this diverting piece of research until I met Brian Krohn at the Somnex Sleep Show in London last month. He was there to talk about his new app Soundly, a natural way to treat snoring which gamifies some of the therapeutic principles behind the digeridoo study.
Still in his early thirties, Dr Brian Krohn’s career has criss-crossed the fields of academia, innovation and entrepreneurship in an impressive array of projects both serious….. and not so serious.
These include pioneering a new method of manufacturing clean biodiesel, co-founding one of the largest hop-farms in the Midwest, developing diagnostic tools for neurosurgery, and oh, yeah, a Kickstarter that makes ‘magic wizard staffs‘
But now Brian’s mission is sleep, so we caught up after the show to talk more about his work as a scientist and entrepreneur, and how he’s created a natural method of reducing snoring by playing a retro video game. Enjoy!

I got very interested because the project that Brian is involved in now soundly is based on some research that we wrote about a few years ago, and so we had a chat after the show and Brian has kindly agreed to talk to sleep junkies and explain a bit more so… hi Brian hey ding
Brian Krohn: Hi Jeff yeah thanks for having me, it's great to catch up after the show.
Jeff Mann: Yeah fantastic, yeah really excited to hear what you've got to say. So before we start can you give us a little elevator pitch for your app soundly? What is the Soundly app? Brian Krohn: Yeah totally so soundly is an app based therapy, that helps reduce snoring. So it's an app that reduces snoring and how we do that, is there's a lot of science to the research that shows that you can strengthen and tone the upper airway, by doing specific vocalizations and that helps reduce the vibrations that cause snoring.

So, can you give our listeners just a very brief overview of who you are? Actually, before we do that there's a brilliant bit on your website, I just like to read out just as a preface to your introduction so on your website sleepconsultancy.com on the About page it made me laugh so I'm just going to read it out.
It says “Dr. Neil Stanley, what I am not, I’m not and these are all in inverted commas here. I'm not asleep advocate sleep diplomat, sleep practitioner, sleep educator, sleep evangelist, sleep therapist. Sleep physiologist, sleep environmental analyst, sleep fairy, sleep guru, sleep geek sleep solution expert sleep Ambassador sleep Health Navigator sleep solution expert international sleep speaker and educator or any other fancy title I am a sleep expert plain and simple." I love that. Introducing Dr Neil Stanley, Sleep Expert Dr Neil Stanley: Yeah I mean this is it, I mean I am asleep expert but I mean I've been involved in sleep research for the last 36 years initially worked alongside the world Air Force at the Institute of Aviation Medicine looking at things like workload, jet lag, shift work & medicines you can take and safely fly. In the early 90s I moved to the University of Surrey. I created and ran the world's largest clinical trial sleep laboratory, a 24 bed unit and as part of that I designed constructed the 12 finest bedrooms built anywhere on the planet.
I've been involved in clinical sleep in London and Surrey, in Copenhagen and in Oslo. I have got a collection of over 1200 sleep books so if I'm not reading about it or talking about it, I'm writing about it or doing it I'm been independent sleep expert for the last 10 years now and I traveled the world talking about the importance of sleep to anybody who will listen to me, basically members of the public health care professionals, etc. etc.
And the reason for writing that on the website is unfortunately, anybody can set themselves up as a sleep expert and or any of thos...
