We are impacted…
By the magnificent landscapes we see, the well-designed bridges we cross and the paved roads we typically drive, bike, skate, walk or even crawl on. Yet we fail to acknowledge the many that paved the way literally and the lives lost while doing it.
While driving alone…
and doing a across country trip from NYC to California.
Yes, in the midst of COVID, I passed through several states and the one that left an imprint was COLORADO, a mountainous state with picturesque views, steep highways and not so great drivers (someone rear ended me on the highway…that’s another story).
While driving on I-70W, with ease and gasping while staring at the huge mountains, a thought popped up… one being, ha! a particular person was scared I could get kidnapped while on my cross-country journey.
But there I was, I was more concern with the signs stationed near the base of the mountains that read, “be careful of falling rocks.”
That scared the hell out of me… If there’s anything I am afraid of…it’s her. When has mother nature every say, “Opps, I’m sorry.”
As I continued to drive…
while looking up every now and then for falling rocks…I had another thought; a quick flashback to the news about the plane crash of LaMia flight 2933 with the Brazilian football squad and they had to eat some of the dead corpse (dead teammates and associates that died in the crash) to stay alive.
Though the crash took place in Columbia when I see mountains… that situation pops up and the thoughts of, “What would I do?” umm..
Then my thought shifted once more, and I was in a state of gratitude…appreciating how many lives were lost, so I can gain access. You might be thinking, access to what? Just access.
So many times, we can take for granted so many things from food being in a grocery store and our biggest concern is what should I eat? When I am referring to ACCESS…
I am…
speaking about, the access to drive with ease from one state to another and the many lives that paved the way and lost theirs along the way.
The native Americans that once occupied the space and many that lost their lives, even those that traveled for the Gold Rush... (now quite sure how they made it), and the demolitions that moved mountains literally.
This led me to ponder about life, and many use the phrase, “I’m a self-made millionaire.” “I, did this,” and “I did that.” There is no such thing.
I will not remove your responsible and the steps you took to get you on your path and at the same time, you did not do it alone. Others existed before you and I.
Many have demolition a way so we can have ACCESS to a seat at the table, create your own table, and choose not to sit if you so decide to stand.
In this time of celebrating Black history and women history. I want to say, “Thank you.” Though some names are mentioned more frequently than others… during this time.
I want to thank you all both past and present for the small and giant steps you have taken, that lead us this far.
Thank you for giving us ACCESS and may we do the same for others; for life is not a destination but a JOURNEY.
“ say my name, say my name”
— Destiny's child (mostly Beyonce)
No really, learn how to say my name.
Couple days ago, I was listening to NPR… I repeat, NPR. Of all the news radios I expect better. They always pride themselves on being one of the best news outlets.
Anyhow, I am coming from a dentist appointment, annoyed that I had to wake up early for the appointment then only to realize I have a small cavity that needs filling, and I am tired of wearing braces… To add to my annoyance, I am riding in a Lyft service and many of you would still call it Uber.
As I am listening to the radio…
the host of NPR spoke about the female coaches breaking records.
It is GREAT to hear that many women are simply stepping into the position they were born to play.
Another thing I noticed; the host stumbled over the Coach’s name.
I took a deep breath and blurted out, “You are on national radio.” Since you prepared ahead of time to do this episode…
Learn the person’s name. Break it down… look on Facebook, they have a section on how to pronounce it… ask Google or Siri or simply, ask someone.
Maral Javadifar
The Coaches name is Maral Javadifar (Jah-va-dee-far). I personally might have a hard time pronouncing it and many might, but since you are going to speak about this woman on national public radio you better know the origin of the name and how to say it phonetically.
So, this just set off my usual storming thoughts.
It is becoming inexcusable to stumble over people’s names. This touches a personal place in my heart because since the day I started school…First grade to be exact.
I have been correcting people ever since...I even correct my parents on how they spelled my name. ‘I’ before ‘e’ except after ‘C’…they do not follow rules.
I am used to my name being stumbled over, mispronounced, or they simply just refer to me by my last name because they could not pronounce my first name. “My heart will go on,” Celine Dion reference. I feel for those who must go through this.
But under no circumstances should you find it necessary to form-fit… dumb-down who you are to try and blend into western society and their basic names. Many do it and later regret it.
So, if you choose to name your child something outlandish…hopefully not Apple…. Let it have meaning and be proud.
They might go through life correcting people; however, they will know they are special. Plus, teachers are tired of hearing Jaden, Aiden, Braden, Kaden….’en’, etc.
Some may even consider a short common name with the belief that their child’s chance of being hired will increase when applying for jobs. That depends on what job this child will be applying for and if there isn’t a pandemic going on….no one is being hired or he might be an entrepreneur.
Many times, it is not the name that is the issue… it is people's short attention span. So, to all the names that are hard to pronounce … I see you and I will take the time to pronounce it. Own who you are and if need be correct them every time.
I was watching tv and a little girl quoted her mom when she questioned her own name. Her mom said,
“If they can pronounce Tchaikovsky… They can say your name as well.”
So, “Say my name, say my name,” and when others are calling you by your name, they are invoking your essence. They are speaking your name and the meaning into existence. Own it and Be it. That is only if it’s something positive.
I had an issue with Black Lives Matter.
Black Lives Matter (BLM) was brought to the stage front July 13, 2013. It is an international movement originated within the African-American community which campaigns against violence and systemic racism ( Wikipedia).
When BLACK LIVES MATTER became prominent, I was resistant to it. It referring to the NAME of the CAUSE, But not the cause it campaigns against.
Simply put, “Black Lives Matter,” appears divisive but I later found out, that is not the case.
Why?
I disliked the name because it was direct. I thought it was poor marketing. Yes, people’s lives are unjustly taken and I’m here thinking about the marketing aspect of the campaign.
My first reaction to the name BLACK LIVES MATTER was, are we being inclusive? On the grand scheme of things, when more people feel connected to a Cause, there is a high probability the Cause will be championed.
I say this because, as we look at various causes such LGBTQIA.., (and whatever else letters that might be added later), PETA, ( people for ethical treatment of animals); They all want to appear inclusive, well scripted and executed.
But, many fail to realize that various organizations such as Women’s rights Movement (feminist still can be racist), LGBTQUIA…(privileged white men especially), Immigrants (Brown people…yes you are black) and NFL, and many others have benefitted and are benefiting off the backs of blacks…in MANY ways: one aspect is the The Civil rights movement act of 1964.
When the issues of blacks are addressed society reaps the harvest.
For those expecting today’s uprising to be nicely wrapped in a package for your comfort, that is A Big MISTAKE.
Though Black Lives Matter was not well curated, it is a movement that started with a #hastag or older folks might call it… a #pound-sign. ( which is brilliant)
Though in the beginning I was thinking, “yes, all lives matter duh.” I just wanted the name to sit well with others to generate more allies.
How many times have we tried to fit into the mold of society and appease to others?
After looking more in depth into our current state in society, though the name of an organization is important and you want to market it to the masses; at the same time I realized with many things, it has very little to do with the name i.e Google, YAHOO, OREO, REDDIT… it has more to do with the product/content it provides.
No matter what an organization is called, if people do not care about a CAUSE or a group of people combating injustices, they will find a way to water it down, negate it and ignore it.
And for many, the word “BLACK” is already offensive.
Though Black Lives Matter started with a #pound-sign; Black Lives Matter stems from, anger, pain, suffering, exhaustion, being unheard for decades…centuries by the USA.
It is birthed by seeing Black bodies murdered and overlooked. It came from bodies being looted, and those with badges seen as innocent and the innocent being criminalized.
Though BLM was not concocted in a huge board meeting with the marketing team waiting for the VP to sign off on it... It was created by Innocent blood being shed and crying out for help.
Many misinterpret this Protest as divisive it is not..it is direct.
Time is calling for TRANSFORMATION, and REFORMATION. I want to avoid using the word “change,” because it is overly processed.
In order to get the transformation in our society/communities, we need politicians with reformed mindsets.
For centuries we have placed/selected people that have perpetuated the same demonizing rhetoric and others glaze over the real concerns to appease to everyone.
SO, when people are saying GO AND VOTE. That in itself is skating over the issues. YES, VOTE. In reality, we are voting for the SAME PEOPLE that are representing “DIFFERENT” PARTIES.
Republicans and democrats are interchangeable.
Since republicans are Pro-Life…understand and legislate laws that can be in the betterment of minority lives, not just lives in the womb.
Yes all men (women included) are created equals…BUT society has and continue to treat them differently and unjustly.
END THE CYCLE!
It’s just Semantics
Do not get caught GAZING over the forest and miss the HUGE tree that IS burning down.
Ignore it long enough and EVENTUALLY everything WILL BE SET ablaze.
WE have already seen the smoke, the damages and have ignored them for centuries.
Do not deflect from the word “Black Lives Matter,” as a way to separate yourself from the CAUSE.
IT IS ABOUT JUSTICE BEING SERVED.
Police have become the Judge and the Jury. …Blacks and other minorities are being strangled in the streets, chased and gun downed.
If we continue to ignore this due to the wording of “ BLACK Lives Matter,”…It is only a matter of time until you will start fighting for your own freedom, gasping for your dare life as you take your last breath. Remaining SILENT also Kills.
This is NOT about anti-police. It is about keeping them accountable.
Note, before you head outside today, make sure you phone is CHARGED.
So,
For all of you screaming, “ALL LIVES MATTER.” you are correct. Let US not let formal semantics divide us.
If this was a math equation, since, “All Lives Matter,” Then someone saying, “Black Lives Matter,” is also CORRECT; because Black Lives would be included in the All Lives MATTER.
The cause is BLACK LIVES MATTER… it did not say ONLY black lives matter. Know the difference.
Right now BLM is focusing on the injustices affecting the Black Community.
The black community have greatly affected by Slavery, Jim Crow Laws. In addition to SYSTEMIC RACISM: Redlining, using property tax to fund schools, police brutality, racism…and many of our causes falling on deaf ears, blind eyes and hardened hearts.
So, to name the cause Black Lives Matter, has it’s benefits! It is up front and CENTER.
It has caught the attention of mainstream media; from actors, businesses to politicians.
there IS NO WAY AROUND IT.
If you choose to ignore it, you ARE blatantly racist or frankly you don’t care about anyone’s life; which perpetuates racism which makes you part of the problem.
Silence does not remove you from the effects of society. Your voice is powerful…Use IT.
And some of you…THE ONES WHO CARE MORE ABOUT THE LOOTERS THAN THE ACTUAL DEATHS. YOU CARE MORE ABOUT PURSES THAN BODIES. YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.
No, I do not agree with looting and stealing. Understand that just because there is a uprising, It does not mean that everyone is FOR THE CAUSE.
You will have the agitators, the bandwagon, those pushing their own agendas etc.
So let’s refocus…if this issue of racism was taken care of already….we would not be here discussing it.
Take responsibility.
On a side note, for those of you who are trying to keep YOUR children in a bubble, that is not the answer. Allow your children to play with children of color and vice versa… Learn to build real relationships with people color so it is not just a #blacklivesmatter
Racism and complacency go hand-in-hand. They are learned whether overtly or covertly and the affects are deadly.
So, as a Christian, aren’t we all God’s people?
So, does All Lives Matter? For Christians who are having an issue with this cause/movement I would urge you to WAKE UP!
Your brothers and sisters are in need yet silence have permeated the Podium, choirs and the pews. Many might think this is a “trendy” sermon to deliver, but the, “love thy neighbor,” Still stands. Being a “voice to the voiceless.” is still applicable and is needed!
Read John 17:20-26, For believers we are called to be intertwined by LOVE, and be the embodiment of unity. By people seeing the many colors, cultures etc. we become an example to society.
It was NOT meant for us to stay IN separate buildings on SUNDAYs…divided by color due to living in separate neighborhoods (redlining), having separate school etc. -All due to the design of systemic racism.
I sometimes joke to myself while wondering why we let the most superficial covering separate us? What would have happened if 5 million people had extra legs and another 10 million had extra arms or just another eye? smh.
Over all, Lives are TAKEN/MURDERED because we are waiting for someone else to aid them. Waiting for someone else to speak up for them. Waiting for someone else to Stand with them. In saying this, I am talking about lives, Blacks, Children, Native American etc…. All lives.
So, agreeing with Black Lives MATTER does not negate other races and nationality… it is simply pointing an arrow towards a group of people that needs your help…Your voice, your influence to bring about transformation in society NOW.
For those who are Color-blind,
Stop saying it! unless you are actually color-blind. I am referring to the, “see no evil,” “hear no evil,” and “speak no evil”…individuals; yet they let racism run rampant.
Yes, I’m referring to the jokes you make at work, being silent to injustices, the ones that do not hire someone because of their skin tone or name or frankly, choose not to promote them and to the many individuals still wondering why people keep saying YOU have privilege.
So, even though you (those who are color-blind) think you have self-actualized and have elevated your understanding of humanity, society and YOUR spiritual being….
In actuality you are not “WOKE,” you are simply having a vivid dream.
(ALERT) By claiming to be blind to color we are stating, those being affected by racism …are being haunted by the FIGMENT of their imagination, which is disingenuous and have proven deadly.
And those benefiting from being color-blind ,it is seen as if it is just their, “hard work” that has paved the way for them. We fail to realize that this system has been structured for white people more especially white males to get more than just a head start in life… It opened more opportunities, they can easily navigate through life without modifying their behavior, erasing their culture while not being $hortchanged in the workplace, stereotyped having cops called on them while doing mundane daily activities. - and these are just a few things.
As you can SEE It is just as disastrous to drive color-blind as it is to live in the same manner.
Being “color-blind” does not elevate you…It makes you part of the problem.
Understand, you can still love someone and still see their color. It just shows us that though the eyes sees, it is the mind that perceives…Judges, condemns... It is the mind that needs transforming.
So, START SEEING COLORS…the answer is to not judge, condemn AND demonize PEOPLE because of it.
For many when you see color you will REALIZE the LACK of diversity you are surrounded by and/or the LACK of diversity you are creating and maintaining.
Start looking up funds and charities you can give to.
*We are responsible for ending Police Brutality and Social Injustices. I am not saying do not march or for you to march. I am saying…DO SOMETHING (donate to a cause, start making your relationships intentional with people of color, etc.) and be an Ally to combat injustice.*
I was blind but now I SEE.
We as a society are waking up… it ONLY took CORONAVIRUS, and the country being isolated/SOCIAL DISTANCING in their homes for months, which affects UNEMPLOYMENT drastically, No sports, you’ve already binged-watch the entire Netflix/Hulu, the down-turning of an economic system, a DIVISIVE PRESIDENT and let US not forget….THE MURDERING OF BLACK PEOPLE and the world seeing it on a video recording while justice is not being served.
Are you still reading?
I call and stand for,
-Police Reform
-School Reform
-Housing reforming
-Political reform
…DO NOT just agree with a CAUSE.
START MAKING A DIFFERENCE.
When taking the high road take its emotional toll, it hurts.
So, here we are again. Another body…another death…another righteously
angered group of people…another battle to fight…another life to defend…another false accusation of people…another misrepresentation of a community.
When will it cease? What is its root, and will we ever acknowledge that there’s racial issue that needs a resolution and society that needs healing?
We call it racism, inequality… injustice.
What does it look like? And how can we fix it?
The saying goes,” if it is not broken, don’t fix it.” What if a system is rusted, needs polishing and updating what then? What if it is broken and we refuse to see it…what is next?
But ultimately, what if this is the systematic racist society that was intentionally created and is serving its ultimate purpose… which is to OPPRESS.
If many fail to see America at its core, it means, we are in a state of avoidance and denial and this society will eventually implode.
A famous quote from Mahatma Gandhi springs to mind here: 'the true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members'.
So, how are we doing?
Let’s factor in generations of inequality (Jim crow laws), redlining, unequal school systems, police brutality…
(umm where are the native Americans?)
…turning jails into businesses to the current state of Coronavirus and how it has exposed America’s most vulnerable and due to this many hundred of thousands have died-which drastically hit the people-of-color community.
We have a system/country called America that acts more like a corporation, doing whatever is necessary to protect its brand: freedom, prosperity, and justice for all.
When we put a microscope to the word “ALL”, we begin to see that “ALL” refers to:
-Those that barely have any or no melanin.
-Those that hide from the sun or choose to get
a tan when it is convenient and trending.
-Those that choose to discuss racial issues when it is convenient.
-Those that, “don’t see color,” yet stop at a red-light.
-Those, that when life becomes overbearing, they have a choice to feel helpless and ignore the situation.
-Those that can make an impact but are still blind and deaf to what is happening.
But, It’s all hard work?
I understand that we all must work hard in life, but to think that all your hard work got you to where you are, is foolish and shortsighted.
We are all standing on the backs of others that were before us. Many lives and time were sacrificed for
me to be here typing my thoughts and reactions to what is going on.
Someone had to work to make sure I had food to eat when I was younger. For many entitled privilege people, they are consumed with the idea that it was all their hard work which led them to where they are which is
naïve.
It is a conglomeration of everything.
Hard work (for some) + favor + assimilation + privilege + history + the
color of your skin + gender + religion.
Everything matters and plays a role in this society.
Do not mistake role for identity which many try to use interchangeably.
“Plays a role” means, it was considered or had a weight in someone’s decisions towards you, for a position, a job, whether or not you received better housing (redlining), went to better schools, society
was more understanding of you etc.
If you still think you got to be where you are all by your hard-work, think again about who gave birth to you and the society and systemics structure of society you were born into. Your benefits, was some else’s barricade.
Privilege
When many speak of white privilege…many refuse to see life in such manner.
However, if you were to phrase it as: Minorities/people of color are at a
disadvantage, that phrase would be more receptive for them because seeing others less
than them are the norm.
Many people are discomforted with the word PRIVILEGE.
What is privilege?
I can sum it up as:
-having the benefit of the doubt.
-If you are in a situation that might seem suspicious, others might see there is a chance that you might be innocent.
-Having the choice to
separate from a Cause because it does not “affect” you directly and you can spend your life avoiding and ignoring just about any Cause.
-Going through life and justifying
that it is someone else’s responsibility.
-Seeing others being blamed for your own
neglect and mismanagement.
-Gentrifying a community and make false claims to the cops about its neighbors that has been there for decades.
-Having a voice and remaining Silent.
-If someone from your ethnicity or race committed a crime, they were considered
-a lone wolf with mental issues and they are not representing their entire Culture
and Race and Demographic and Family and History and Future.
-After the mistreatment of others, you do not have to forgive, and you are being “right “ and “justified.”
Jogging, taking walks and taking trains at night and not worried about being mugged or raped.
-Jogging/taking walks at night, and no one will call the cops on you because you look (suspicious)
-Being in a higher socioeconomic
bracket/status.
-having influence and you had a chance to grow up and you were a child…
and not a black, Hispanic, Asian, native American child.
Just a child.
That is privilege
because a person of color is stigmatized in the womb.
Many people do not see that they are privileged yet they are swimming
in it.
Being privilege means you have access to resources that might not be available to others.
It does NOT equate to others being less than, (in value to) you.
Taking it’s toll.
takes it toll when you continue to pray for a society and forgive them… after a while, Many are left depleted of going through the
same cycle with no answer or structure for change. Due to this, there is nothing to implement and they are left broke.
Broken emotionally and falling through a system
that is not built to support them.
Yes, many are angry but some how society
focuses on the branches- the riot, protests, yelling and some cases
looting.
Society/news/ government tend to
neglect the root of the issues and the plant of injustice continues to grow.
No matter what century/decade we are in, there is no avoiding it because eventually
it will be at our doorstep and even with our doors shut it will enter our homes through media which will most likely alter the perception.
But again, we can change the channel and
watch our favorite sitcoms that are streaming.
Because of this, so many choose to take the low road and cause raucous. Sometimes we need that. Call a spade a spade. Call shit what it is. Call out racism when you see it because it is damaging to US all and is costly to today and to our future.
If we are ever to be effective, we need Unity, Love, Connection, a Listening ear and structures implemented to move US forward
together.
If anyone has ever seen the movie HITCH with Will Smith, might have asked themselves does such a person exist? The answer is YES. I will be interviewing the modern day Hitch/Relationship Coach Imad Jbara.
Lately I have been realizing, I am getting old.
Is it bad to grow old? In my opinion, NO but lately I have just been more mindful of time. Though TIME is relative, it brings the ominous feeling that if I don’t use it wisely, I am going to waste it and have all the regrets in the entire world. Or worst, I am going to justify my failures or lack of attempts to go after something I desire.
Lord, is something wrong with me, is this normal?
Here are a few Signs.
While watching sports, you realize you know mostly the Coaches and Analysts. When it comes to the players, a few looks familiar but the majority of them you know already retired.
The change in Music. Music is the sound track to life and when I am listening to what is currently on the radio I sometimes cringe. Also, when I am at wedding for someone who is getting married in their mid 20s, I realize I sit down when they are playing mumbling rap while people in the 20s, are having a grand ol’ time.
Still using the word, “grand ol time.”
You stop caring what people think. Of course somethings may offend you, but on whole, you feel more confident as you are more comfortable in your skin.
Eye Cream. The moment I felt like I was getting old. I started using eye cream and lots of it. I’m not quite sure why that was my go to…LOL. You start to care more about skin regimen.
Your taste begins to change. Whether it’s pertaining to friends, people, food, music…etc.
You sometimes realize it’s hard making new genuine friends. Though you get a long with a lot of people. You begin to realize, though you make new friends, you cherish the old friendships.
Overall, treat life like wine, you get better though you change in time.
Can I make a difference?
“Don’t walk by,” is a partnership with various organizations throughout the city of New York.
After donating my time this weekend, I was able to have an hands on experience of how this initiative is impacting our community.
When I first arrived,
I was somewhat sleepy yet making my way to the volunteer site in Manhattan on Saturday afternoon.
Upon arrival I checked at the host site Church. Everyone was assigned to different group, each group had a group leader and each group would be assigned to a certain location within the city.
After becoming acquainted with those that will be in my group, about 30 minutes later, the president of Rescue Alliance and other individuals spoke and gave us the step by step details of how to interact with those on the street and what we might encounter while we are out there.
Several things stuck out to me:
We called homeless individuals, neighbors, guests/friends. Our mission is to make contact with these guest and invite them to dinner. Food, shelter, and services were provided at the host site.
We were there to connect as humans being and not just giving handouts to make ourselves feel better.
No means no. If we are speaking to one of our friends in the community and they refuse assistance, whether it is food, toiletries, etc.. We had to respect their decision.
Obviously, if we were to see someone in distress such as bleeding, or is about to self harm etc., we were encouraged calling the proper health providers.
Many people at times just want to throw services at people but fail to make contact with them to build trust/ rapport before giving them something, whether it be socks or a dollar.
That was especially apparent when I met a friend in Grand Central that was so desperately in need. He was let down so many times by others that he refused almost everything we offered, except socks and prayer.
Though his feet hurt, he complained of arthritis,
he did not want to be seen by a podiatrist or sleep in a private-owned shelter etc. due to his past experience with other shelters. According to him, they were horrible. He claimed someone stole his belongings, etc. and his trust of others severely diminished.
After connecting with him through genuine conversation and concern. I was able to see him transition from being dismissive/guarded to opening up and admitting that he needs help though he was not ready to go with us to a facility provided that can give him services he needs.
I considered that moment a success because we were able to reveal to a friend that, yes you are still human (not in those words obviously) and we are not meant to carry burdens by ourselves, though we try and appear to be strong for others as we are internally dying.
Though this is not my first time volunteering in this capacity, that’s the main thing that stood out to me.
So overall, when we see a need in society…Many times, we are called to fill it.
Though prayer is an act and when accompanied by physical action, lives can be transformed.
Don’t get caught up in the details, just act.
So, get involved in your community and see how you can make a difference one life at a time.

Be mine!
The thought of someone putting everything aside to adore you with their time or with gifts seems to be people’s ultimate desire/wish.
So, when it comes to a point when you are tired of kissing frogs and cuddling with empty shells i.e. having someone around but the relationship is empty- emotionally…
What then?
Do you continue to wait around for the “ONE” to come around, continue settling for scraps or do you start to create your own joy and happiness.
What does your joy and happiness looks like when you are not in a relationship with someone else? People tend to forget they are in a relationship with themselves.
Being single as with many things comes with it ups and downs.
Ups, you are single you can roam the world. Downside, you can roam the world but you don’t want to do it by yourself. Also, those that are wedded and in sitationship…not really a clear relationship, they have their concerns as well. Many times people want to eat their cake and have it too and share.
At the end of the day, are you loving yourself and understanding your self worth. It’s not about selfishness or vanity/conceit. Many times is just contentment. It’s wanting the person in your life, not a parasitic leech in need of a relationship or someone in your life.
Do you enjoy being around you?
As I am embracing my singleness though I desire to be in a relationship, do I have options, of course. But, I am choosing to hangout with friends and have a great time while being dressed up on this day.
It took a long time for me to be content with being single because people are always wondering, “why are you single?" Singleness is not a disease, not a block you have to get over and a relationship is not the prize after overcoming “it”. Singleness is just you learning and discovering who you are and that which YOU, desire out of life.
I thank God for being with me in my singleness and it took me years to just be and be still. In addition, there are so many unhealthy relationships I could have been involved in. And on the flip side there are some many healthy ones I could have tainted because I didn’t make the time to discover who I am in Christ and heal from past issues and move forward in a stronger manner to build the life I Desire.
On a side note: The best part about this day is….chocolates and other things are on SALE tomorrow.
So, for the lone sole reading this, smile your time will arrive in due time. Discover yourself in the midst of it all. Try not to get consumed with lovey dovey movies and don’t forget if you are still missing that something. Ask God to fill those empty areas of your life and if flowers is your thing, send yourself some.
-Love
So, what’s for Breakfast?
Sometimes, your guess is good as mine. One of the most inconsistent things in my life is what I eat. Yet, my job is a Fit Model. I am suppose to maintain my measurements… interesting task to accomplish with this inconsistent eating habit.
Some days I have everything planned out like Mary Poppins. Sometimes (the next day), I am scrambling to catch the train to get to work on time and I didn’t eat anything for breakfast.
I remembered hearing it somewhere that Jennifer Aniston ate the same lunch for 10years. Two things popped in my mind, is that’s that reason Brad Pitt left her…is she too monotonous. Not justifying a man’s decision, it’s just my thought. And the other thought was maybe she should have left long time ago but held onto something because she was use to it.
But anyhow, back to my breakfast.
I start of my day by drinking hot water. I sip it as if it’s tea. If I remembered to buy lemons, it would be lemon hot water.
Oatmeal
one of the superbreakfast, is oatmeal. Yea, that word has been coined by me.
Oatmeal when done correctly satiates your appetite and leaves you feeling full for hours. Add fruits, flaxseed, and use honey instead of sugar when preparing it.
(don’t feed honey to babies)
Yesterday my oatmeal was done in a rush and it ended up in the garbage. umm. I didn’t have enough almond milk in the fridge and then I tried to add protein power to it to get all my nutrients and protein at once.
This can be done…I just didn’t do it correctly. ‘eh’
The key to eating consistently is to SHOP for groceries consistently*
Smoothies
Green ain’t nothing but color. But, sometimes it doesn’t give me that warm morning breakfast feeling. When I choose to have smoothies. I tend to use coconut water, fruits and Kale, Spinach, Lemon, ginger and protein power.
The lemon and ginger mask the protein powder shake taste and gives a refreshing taste.
Sometimes I am still hungry after the shake. It’s a great way to get nutrients and by the time I arrive to work, I’ll eat some fruits, such as banana, mango, etc water... until lunch time.
Nothing
In this age where eating disorders are rampant. This option is never the greatest option. This blog is not to justify eating, “nothing,” for breakfast. It is simply stating what I eat in a day and some of my mornings are not always strategically planned.
Usually I arrive to work at 10am and after my arrival, and I am feeling hungry, I go across the street for something healthy…fruits, yogurts, granola, etc. In the past a cinnamon bagel with cream cheese or a cinnamon bagel with bacon and egg would be my go to.
However, I am currently a vegetarian (4 months in) and I am looking for healthier options.
My Lunch
YUM!
Yes I took time preparing it and it looked more delicious in person.
At work, while everyone eat out of containers, I usually put my food onto a plate.
I spend most of my time at work and I am not going to spend most of my time eating out of plastic containers… (side eye)..
When your food looks appealing and taste scrumptious…life is good.
In my plate I have boiled plantain, steam spinach, seasoned brown rice, and beyond burger meat with sauté onions. :)))))). The rest of the meat is hiding under the steam spinach. It’s not actual meat. Everything about it is vegetarian but it doesn’t taste like it.
Overall I usually have brown rice AND veggies+ vege-meat and vegetables and a handful of fries -OR- mashed potatoes and curried cauliflower, avocado, cabbage etc.
When it’s time for lunch….It’s time for LUNCH.
If I have a craving for fries, I get a small fries but I am trying to eat healthier. Fries aren’t the issue, I’m just trying to avoid excess oil.
Snack time
Most of the time I snack on fruits, almonds with chocolate. I started buying the 90% cocoa chocolate. I eat one or two squares of the entire chocolate bar.
Does it taste good….’eh’ at times but I’m getting use to it.
Once in while I would buy the TINY container of breyers ice cream and break up the chocolate in it.
Overall if you are going to eat chocolate, start training your taste buds.
Most of the name brand “chocolates,” are not chocolate at all just sugar and fats.
For me its being health conscious and not weight conscious.
Dinner
Sometimes I am feeling hungry other times I am not.. Once in a blew, I eat cereal.
For dinner, I would eat pasta with sauté onions, vegan cheese and a veggie pattie.
Some days, I would walk home and have a craving for pizza and grab a slice.
As a Fit Model I am not a type A personality where everything has to be planned out or measured or put together nicely.
That would be great at times but my most planned meals for the day I would say is my lunch. I put more effort and care into what I eat. It not only saves me money but it somewhat compensates for missing a hearty breakfast.
After finishing this blog, umm…I realized I should be more consistent. :)
Be mindful to make sure you get in your vitamins and minerals and stay hydrated.
JUST DOing It.
Do I have a preference for certain name brands, not necessarily. I am more concerned with quality. But many failed to know the difference. They simply equate name brand with quality. For example if you decide to buy a leather bag, go and buy one that has good quality. However, we tend to gravitate toward a brand thinking it’s good quality because it’s such and such brand. Knowingly that name of the brand comes with a hefty price.
Anyhow, I find watching people consume to be quite hilarious and so damaging at the same time as if material things substitute for the emotional, spiritual or self worth/value. I barely watch television but when I do, I find commercials very interesting. The concept that a firm is paid millions to sell a product to an individual and to the impressionable minds of children; yet we go into the stores and purchase what’s advertised as if it is by our own choice that we are buying or leaning towards purchasing a certain branded product. The mere fact that many drink wines and eat strawberry covered chocolates on a regular or that you dip you cookies in milk is because at one point it was highly advertised and still is... But lets move on to Nike…..the supposedly controversial ad.
The thing that captivates my mind is how Nike commercials attempts and sometimes succeeds as the medium by which life and products meet, it is not simply selling a product as many do, but that are selling a lifestyle/humanity. The commercial intertwines with our everyday lives and aims to captivate our hearts and our spirit. Many people are simply trying to generate dollars and that's where they fail. Nike has been known to endorse controversial figure such as John McAvoy (high profiled armed robber turned triathlete) and the hashtag take a stand even if it mean losing everything in which shows the face of Colin Kaepernick. This is marketing that surpasses many brands.
Nike is in a phase of marketing that has more to do with life than generating dollars…though generating dollars is still a concern and it may or not be the sole factor. But, as they are backing Kaepernick, they themselves are making a stand even if they might lost some customers. However, their gains may surpasses their loss. They will gain loyalty and trust from a generation who desires more from the company they are buying from. Unlike many, they see that Kaepernick’s kneeling was for social injustice and had nothing to do with disrespecting the flag. Note: when has kneeling been a form of disrespect….take a moment to think about that. wait, let it sink in….
In addition, many are protesting the fact that Nike is endorsing an athlete…. Let that sink in as well. Will that change the cause or the revolution… probably not…that’s for another blog.
Let’s continue…
Many brands whether or not you like them, such as lululemon, chicfila etc. They are more concerned with creating quality and a better life by engaging in every day conversation and making a impact in this realm we live in and oh by the way, sell stuff too. Instead of trying to make a dollar out of 15 cents, how about do something greater and see how your company can transform lives, whether or not they are customers.
So many companies go on trying to change yet are expecting transformation. What do I mean? They go through several CEO and change positions. Changes occurs but transformation is no where in sight. Some people might say, how so? Think about it, we change from a child to an adult yet many have not transformed. They have simply become grown children and are living a reactive life impacted by the past. In a nutshell they are “Adults” but bruised children. In reference to companies, they have changed positions but carrying on in the same mindset.
Transform the mind be empowered by a cause greater than money and you will see the effect of within the company. It doesn’t mean you throw business model out the window, you just start living and working for something greater than your self and the almighty dollar.
Get In Where you Fit In.
A career as a FIT MODEL was foreign to me until I took the plunge and was honest with myself that I wanted to start modeling at the ripe age of 30.
Was I scared? Sure!
When am I not concern about the next step?... (that's for another blog). I was thinking, where do I fit-in, umm I'm not too skinny, I'm not fat...I am what I would call myself, slim curvy with the height of 5'7 3/4'' (171 cm) or round it off to 5'8'' or (172.72cm) with the weight of 137lbs (62.14kg). I started looking up different fields within the modeling industry and came across Fit modeling.
While still living in Massachusetts at the time, I applied online for a Fit Model position in NYC. I was called in for an interview, I was hired on the spot and within a couple weeks I relocated to NYC. For over 2 years I have been employed at the same company as a Full-time Fit Model. With a brief intense transition from the mental health field to being a Fit Model in NYC, it took a lot of adjustments. I slightly felt like Anne Hathaway from the devil wears Prada.
Here are a few tips I learned along the way.
WELL...not as much as this guy in the picture.
Many people commonly confuse Fit Modeling with Fitness Modeling. Am I in tip top shape? Nah, I still have traces of dimpled thighs.
You don't have to have the "perfect" body, just a proportional body.
Fit models are models who work behind the scene in fashion houses and with garment manufacturers and designers to ensure that the sizing and the fit of the garments fits comfortably on the consumer. Being vocal regarding how the garment fits is a necessary job requirement.
Work out sometimes...
eat right and don't freak out that you must maintain your weight to keep a roof over your head.
I did freak out at one point. I couldn't wrap my mind around the fact that the job was easy but somewhat difficult.
I finally realized it wasn't a job; it was a lifestyle. It was beyond my working hours and it was about me making healthy choices as I ate daily and make good decision even on weekends.
"Never let your weight be an obsession"
I rarely ever weigh myself, but I can tell if I lost or gained 5 or 10 lbs. (2.2kg or 4.5 kg) based on how my clothes fit. Be mindful of the garments you are fitting. Being a Fit model for mostly outerwear, I can get away with a few lbs. For other Fit Models some company does a measuring every month.
I learned to have a healthy sense of self and confidence.
I also began to understand that not all my friends will eat as healthy as I do. Some will roll their eyes if I choose a salad or if I’m more concerned about whole wheat bread as oppose to just white bread. I continue to choose healthy options and in no time, some of my friends started eating healthier around me.
You may not look like a print model or have the height of a typical runway model, but maintaining your weight is a necessity.
Some Fit models work with modeling agencies and have several clienteles they go to at any given moment. This requires them to travel from one location to another and they charge by the hour typically $200 or so. I am underestimating it. I know someone in the field for 20yrs that charges $370/hr. and $300 for 1/2 hr.
On the other hand, I work for a company In New York City full-time. My current salaried work schedule is from 10a-5pm Mon-Fri which is not bad. When I am not doing fittings, I am writing blogs.
Make sure nails are always manicured/well kept. They do not have to be polished, but they must be clean and trimmed and the same for your feet.
As a fit model I am somewhat always on display and when I am trying on outwear garments, people are looking at me and at the same time they are not.
They are mostly looking at how the garments fits but essentially, I am still on display. In all, keep
a fresh clean looking face, for some people that is their natural look with lip gloss and for others, they need make up to look natural. At least know the basics when it comes to makeup.
…...NEITHER HAIR NOR THERE
Your hair is somewhat an important part of the job. Yes, black people, not everyone wears an afro and white people not everyone's hair is straight. I loved changing my hairstyles, but I realized that I must be consistent once I was hired for this job.
I used to wear long extension braids, big curly puff. I drove the fit technician nuts, and he continually threatened to cut my hair off...and we both laughed. I began wearing protective styles (google it), and finally I went bald.
Literally I cut my hair and that made it all simple and easy. I wanted to do a major chop years ago because I made a promise to myself that I was going to cut my hair at the age of 30. Now, I keep a wig at work, just in case my head is too small when I'm trying on the hoods for the coats.
…..TO BE OR NOT TO BE FASHIONABLE
Photo by Image Source/DigitalVision / Getty Images
You are what you eat...and to some degree people see you as such based on what you are wearing. It reflects your image. Though you are not on the runway and no one expects you to dress as if you are, essentially it is good to have a well-groomed appearance and apparel to match.
This field has taught me to started caring about the things I thought were absolute nonsense. I used to be the one that careless about what is in season. I was the one who cares more about comfort than anything which means sweats, not just any sweats but baggy sweat pants were my Athleisure, leisure, outfit of choice.
This doesn't mean you have to change who you are, just be more conscious of your outfit and what it is saying to others. Again, this information is coming from someone who hates to iron, I rather put my clothes in the dryer to take out wrinkles than to pull out the ironing board. 'eh'.
Since I moved to NYC and my clothes dryer is not as convenient as I would like it to be, I have pulled out the iron and ironing board several times, knowing I could not cover up the wrinkled shirt or pants.
3.Happy feet
As a fit model I spend a lot of my time on my feet depending on the season. I realized I can't stand in heels for over 2hrs. To someone else this seem like common sense but for me it was comfortable at the time. But after a while I realized my feet were swelling and when I arrived home after work, I wanted to sit and did not want to get up.
If it wasn't to eat or use the bathroom, I wanted to sit-down /lay down and have my feet elevated. Because I was on my feet all day, I did not want to go running at the gym or even go on the elliptical.
I realized I needed to massage my feet when I’m home and when I am getting a pedicure.
As I am learning to be fashionable, I realize that heels are not the answer to everything.
Learn to wear cute shoes and sandals and wedge etc. Still look cute and realize that during and after being a Fit model you will need your feet. Now a days, I leave a pair of black and brown heels at work. I wear sandals to work and if they need me in the showroom, I throw on my heels and switch back into my cute sandals when it’s done.
If I am doing fittings, I switch into my cute comfortable sandals. The same can be said if I wore cute boots for the fall/winter season.
4.
Over there...Under where?
YES! just as how all lives, black lives, our lives, blue lives…matters…your under garments matters as well.
Especially if you fit dresses, pants, active wear etc. bring couple bras and undies to work AND INTERVIEWS and after a while you will get a feel of what is required as you are doing fittings.
Keep in mind, your body is being used to simulate an actual consumer and having the proper undergarment, ensures having the corrects specs and feel of the garment.
If you are unsure as to what is needed, ask?
Be aware that your job is to change into different clothing so get used to it even if you are on your period and feel bloated.
As you are changing into clothes make sure you feel comfortable in doing so, ask to go to the bathroom to change or ask for a screen to change behind.
NEVER FEEL FORCED TO CHANGE IN an environment that MAKES YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE. Keep that in mind. (look out for another blog regarding this).
As a fit model you will be touched daily.
Please know which touches feel professional and comfortable and which touches are not aka sexual harassment.
In this field there are a lot of creeps that are disguised as bosses and supervisors that will want to “touch” the garment but essentially, they are trying to caress you.
Please report this to HR, your agency or even the police and a lawyer if necessary, if it arises.
Document, Document, Document.
Never blame yourself or feel intimidated.
6.Work, work, work, work,work?
If you work full-time in an environment when you are solely there for fitting and it appears that others around you are toiling, please understand that they would love to have your job.
You are vital to the production and design team and at times I have experienced people underminding this position.
I am blessed to have this position. This job does free up my time to work on other projects. I finished my book and I am looking forward to many more blog posts.
Use your time wisely.
Overall, love what you do and do what you love. Ciao
