The Uh Oh Ranch is located southeast of Denver out on the high prairie at 5,800 feet. Mindy Bower and Kevin Hall host an annual Buck-Brannaman Clinic at the Fairgrounds in Kiowa. It's hard to believe, but Mindy Bower has been training horses for 35 years. She has a lot of experience that everyone can draw from, and we appreciate her being on the Horseman's Corner.
So Mindy, when it comes to buying a horse, does it matter if it gets along with your herd?
"If they fit in smoothly I know that well the other horses like them so they must be okay. So that's always a good thing to see. And that's the other thing about looking at horses to buy. You know I really want, like I have this walking horse that I've got right now, he is horrible with the other horses. So I feel like that kind of relates to how he is to ride. He feels very pushy and he's a little bit reactive and he's not a real settled horse. And the herd does not like him. Like when he gets out there he's trying to get up to the number one spot and they're pretty mad at him. So even though he's kind of a bully he gets chased like unbelievably. So you know until that goes away I know that I'm probably not that important to him. He has to figure out where he stands and not heard. But that's one thing too I think you don't get the chance to look at a horse in a herd situation. Which I think that would be a really important thing. Well, how does this horse do with other horses?"
Great information from Colorado horse trainer Mindy Bower. For more on that extended podcast visit horsemanscorner.com. That's going to do it for today's program. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I'm Brian Hale.
Shanda Sachse (Pronounced Saxxy) is our new representative for Horseman's Corner Radio TV and Podcast!
Welcome aboard, Shanda!
Horse people are survivors, leaving off the land while trying to survive in the toughest weather conditions. Here's Wyoming Horsewoman, Annette Coker of Mantz Creek Horses in Douglas, Wyoming.
Vaquejada, the Brazilian version of cow-tipping, involves two horsemen trying to knock over a bull by pulling on its tail.
The organization’s mission is to provide financial support for people in the ranching cowboy community who experience health and accident-related emergencies that result in the inability to work and provide for their families. Before seeking 501(c)3 status, the individuals forming the Board held two events to raise over $25,000 for two widows who lost their husbands to unexpected health issues. These fundraising events allowed them to cover hospital and funeral expenses that otherwise would have placed them in severe financial distress. This experience created the impetus to formalize the fundraising effort as more instances of need in a community comprised of cowboys, often with little or no health and disability insurance, came to light.

Let's continue that conversation with Brenda Beeson, Western Cattle Source Crawford, Nebraska.
What kind of horses are you offering in your March 20th sale?
"I have four horses, one rider on there. All these colts are sired by my stud, Frenchmans Cruz. And like I said, I got the one rider, coming two year old, and two yearlings on the sale."
So again, that's March 20th. That's at the ranch, Western Cattle Source in Crawford, Nebraska.
"Yes, it's a five miles north, three west of Crawford here at the ranch. One of my brood mares is out of a full sib to PCFRENCHMANSLISBET, which was full sister to BOZO. That's the mother of one of my mares. And I feel like some really high caliber quality brood mares that these colts are out of, and by."
Congratulations on the success at that level. That must be pretty thrilling.
"Yes, it is. It's been fun and a challenge. And you know, at first you kind of question whether it was working or paying off when you started, and now been in it now, seriously in it, for a little over 10 years now. And you know, I'm starting to see it pay off and see these horses go out and perform and work for other people and do good. So that's been the really cool part is seeing these colts go out and see other customers have success with them."

I think by now everyone's heard of podcasting, but what is it exactly? Podcasting is radio on demand through the internet. Millions of people are tuning in to podcasts every day. Podcast listeners are more likely to buy a product or service as compared to other media. Of course, radio is still a solid option in the digital age and that's why you are going to contact us. Radio and podcasting work well together. Visit Hale Broadcasting to learn more about podcasting.

Tom and Billie Henderson are a team when it comes to training horses for shooting events... Listen in!
Billie Henderson, along with her husband Tom Henderson, is part of the cowboy mounted shooting community. Tom achieved the amateur world champion title at the 2017 AQHA Cowboy Mounted Shooting World Championships in Houston. His success is largely attributed to his horse, Rojos Klassy Fox, a 2013 bay roan stallion bred by Sam Schoultz and Ken Matzner of Fort Collins, Colorado. Interestingly, the Hendersons acquired Rojos Klassy Fox after a fortunate turn of events. When they went to look at the colt, they discovered that a vet was sewing up an eye injury the colt had sustained in the stall. Fortunately, the vet believed the injury wouldn’t affect the colt’s vision, allowing the Hendersons to purchase him within their budget. They affectionately named him “Stitch” to commemorate this unique circumstance. Billie initially gun-broke him as a weanling, and Tom took over the reins for cowboy mounted shooting. Tom’s enthusiasm for this sport is evident – he hasn’t swung a rope in two years due to the addictive nature of mounted shooting!

Hey, did you know that you could find top trainers, podcasters, equine authors, clinicians, all on our website?
It's not just a website filled with the greatest radio interviews of all time with horse people. No, it's a lot more than that. It's a search engine, a great place to find authors, clinicians, speakers, and the best information about horsemanship.
Now here's Texas clinician, Van Hargis, with his program, The Ranch Road.
Good morning everybody. This is Van Hargis with Van Hargis Horsemanship and welcome to The Ranch Road. As always, it's that little short drive we take each day from the house over to the ranch and doing so. We just try to share little tidbits with you. Today, what I'm going to share with you is something that everybody may be aware of, but it's pretty well factually true across several different industries. Did you know that the two people who get hurt the most in their profession are rookies and the most experienced? In other words, the rookies and the old guys, they are the ones that get hurt the most. And why do you think that is? Well, the rookies get hurt because they just simply don't have enough experience. They don't know what to do and what to look for when it comes to risk management. Therefore, their lack of experience kind of leads them into making decisions that may not be conducive to them not getting hurt. So as a result, those rookie guys just get hurt because they just don't know all the things to do or as many things to do to prevent accidents and things like that from happening. We see it all the time in the horse industry. We see young trainers or young folks getting bucked off of horses and getting hurt and getting their horses in precarious situations, but they're resilient. They bounce back. They don't suffer those injuries like us old folks, right?
Join us again tomorrow for part two on why the old guys get hurt.
That's going to do it for today's program. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I'm Brian Hale.

Here's a fun interview with a couple old timers, Howard Hale and Buster McClaury.
Let's listen in.
Buster give me some of your background.
How did you get to the point where you were training horses for the public and putting
on clinics?
I was born at four sectors and so I was a cowboy for I don't know 30 years probably.
And I met Ray Hunt back in mid-80s.
Learned quite a bit about the horse from Ray.
I run a couple of ranches for another 10 years or so and I never really set out to do any
clinics.
First one person and another and got to call in asking for a little help to throw them
ranches as it's coming.
I helped their cowboy start to cope so the business just kind of came our way and that's
kind of how we got started.
Before you met Ray Hunt, who were some of the folks that were kind of influential as
far as your horsemanship was concerned?
Well, my daddy wrote really good horses and my granddad was a good horseman.
A guy named Mark from a daddy named Keith Slower was really good and with a horseman
and my daddy was friends with Buck Welch and Mike Larkrose and some of them guys so I got
to be around them and had an early age on.
Some real legends in the horse business.
That was Buster McClory with Howard Hale.
Thanks again for listening to the horseman's corner.
That's going to do it for today's program.
May God bless.

FULL INTERVIEW!
It's Toby Tooke, great grandson of the legendary Ernest Tooke on The Horseman's Corner with Nelseena Lehmann.
Hello, and welcome to the horseman's Corner. I'm Brian Hale, sitting in for Howard. We'll have our host, Nelseena Lehmann and our guest Sarah Donohue on right after this from Howard. I'd like to invite you to visit the website that we have for the horseman, that's horseman's corner. Good place to advertise, good place to go if you're looking for horse information, that's horsemancorner.com. Okay, NelsonA, tell our listeners who we have today. I have with me today Sarah Donohue from Wakita, Oklahoma. You met Sarah Donohue on an earlier episode of the horseman's Corner today. NelsonA continues that conversation on the different types of horses that she's ridden as well as how she got involved in ranch riding. Here's. Sarah Donahue. Let's listen in.
I wanted something to show and the rainers, if you're not keeping them fit on a regular basis and trying to go back into the raining for just an occasional show or two, it gets a little difficult at times. The ranch riding was a perfect mix for gelding that had been shown a lot, especially in the raining where they start to anticipate. It was able to help me keep his mind fresh and get myself back into chauffin, which is something that I was dying to do while I was in college. So that's kind of how I got into the ranch riding, because you're taking that ranch horse, something that we'd actually use and putting it in the confines of a show pen and evaluating how well does this horse guide? Does it transition well? What kind of gate does it have? Is that something that you really want to go gather cattle on all day? Or is it something you're just trying to get through a pattern with?
That was Sarah Donohue on the horseman's corner with our host. And once again, a big thank you to our new host, Nelseena Lehmann. That's going to do it for this edition of the Horseman's corner, but there's more on the web at horseman's corner. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I'm Brian Hale.
Join Nelseena on The Horseman's Corner as we get to know our guest, Oklahoma horsewoman Sarah Donahue.
Hello and welcome to the horseman's corner. I'm Brian Hale, sitting in for Howard. We'll have our host, Nelseena Lehmann and our guest Sarah Donohue on right after this from Howard.
I'd like to invite you to visit the website that we have for the horseman, that's horsemanscorner.com. Good place to advertise, good place to go. If you're looking for horse information, that's horsemanscorner.com.
I have with me today. Sarah Donahue from Wakita, Oklahoma. Sarah is an accomplished horsewoman. She's a mother, she's an educated lady, and she knows a lot about Stanley horse feed. Please, Sarah, tell us a little about yourself.
So I grew up down in southern part of Texas, and then I went to Texas tech for college and I graduated with a degree in animal science with an emphasis on business. And then I've got a minor in agribusiness management and an equine science certificate. So a whole slew of things right there that I'm really some days I'm not quite sure what they really mean, but I figured out that I do use them in my everyday lifestyle. While I was at college, I was on the Texas tech equestrian team and I was on the horse judging team and had a lot of really great opportunities to continue.
A passion that I started when I was very young, when I was about three years old, is when my dad went into the army reserves and he went off to basic training and my mom did not know what to do with me. She found the ad in the paper for reintroductory lesson. And so by the time that my dad got back from basic training about six weeks later, I was cantering because I was doing English at the time. I was very fortunate the next year to get my first pony and evidently it just took off from there.
That was Sarah Donohue on the horseman's corner with our host Nelseena Lehmann. We'll have more with Sarah next week. That's going to do it for this edition of the horseman's corner, but there's more on the web at horsemanscorner.com. Thanks again for listening and may God Bless. I'm Brian Hale.

From Buck's facebook page...
"You know the thing about Buck, he never quit trying to learn. So many came to a clinic, started doing clinics and you never saw them again. They all studied with Ray Hunt or the Dorrances, maybe one clinic. They all used Ray's name , but Buck showed up year after year. When Ray was in the hospital Buck was at the ranch filling in for Ray, doing his classes. Feel free to choose a mentor that you like for his or her style. What about the inside, what's the integrity . I know who I'd choose!" - Carolyn Hunt

Longmont, Colo.
Marty P. Marten, 70, passed away on Dec. 25, 2018, in Augusta, Kan. He was born on Dec. 29, 1947, in Cedar Vale, Kan., to Wilbur and Clara (Harget) Marten. Marty loved and lived the cowboy life. Marty devoted his life to helping people and horses get to a better place. Marty made a huge impact on the lives of so many. Marty was a true friend and an inspiration to all.
Marty battled multiple health issues for the last 15 years of his life, but he never lost hope because of his deep and abiding faith. His life was a constant witness to his love of God. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Longmont, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Clara Marten and his sister, Marilyn Skaer. Marty’s father was one of 12 children and the Marten family history is long and full.
