It takes me 17 x working days to write the first draft of the book.

James P. Sumner writes a series of action thrillers about a former soldier-turned-hitman named Adrian Hell.
He's worked in every type of office environment you can think of – insurance, banking, mobile phones, telesales … you name it, he's done it.
In July 2013, he began work on his first novel and eventually self-published his debut thriller, True Conviction, on Amazon, where it has now been downloaded over 300,000 times.
He is a member of the Crime Writers Association, and saw his fifth novel, A Necessary Kill, selected as a winner in the 2015 Kindle Scout Program, winning him a publishing contract with one of Amazon's imprints.

Meg Cowley was first interviewed in episode 3 of this podcast, in April 2016.
At that time Meg was experiencing her biggest success in self-publishing having created a series aof adult colouring books which were selling very well.
However, the bottom dropped out of that market and Meg had to so a very sharp pivot to set her writing career back on track.
Prior to the breakkthrough with the adult colouring books, Meg had written two young-adult ‘sword and sorcery' novels and two illustrated children's books.
She's now returned to writing fiction but is still using her artistic skills to generate an author income.

Rachel Abbott spent most of her working life as the Managing Director of an interactive media company.
After her company was sold in 2000, it took until November 2011 for Rachel to launch her first novel Only the Innocent.
The book was self-published in the UK through the Kindle Direct Publishing programme on Amazon, and reached the number 1 spot in the Kindle store just over three months later.

Ruth Sutton's first novel ‘A Good Liar’ was published in 2012 and two further books that formed the Jessie Whelan trilogy followed in successive years – Forgiven (2013) and ‘Fallout’ (2014)
In 2015 Ruth turned her hand to crime fiction in ‘Cruel Tide’, which was shortlisted for the Lakeland Book of the Year.
The sequel ‘Fatal Reckoning’ came out in 2016.

A lifelong fan of Stephen King and Doctor Who, it was perhaps inevitable that his work would sit somewhere between horror and sci-fi.

His first solo novel, The Magpies reached the No.1 spot on Amazon UK and has sold 300,000 copies to date.
This was followed by What You Wish For (2014), Because She Loves Me (2014; also a No.1 bestseller in the UK) and Follow You Home (2015).
Mark started writing in his twenties while working in a number of dead-end jobs.

Since June 2011, I have been writing novels and short stories and now have a backlist of twelve books, with another finished to first draft and yet another half written. After gaining a New Zealand Certificate in Science, Wendy Scott worked in a variety of different laboratories in New Zealand and Australia in the fields of salt, meat, dairy and wine.
While living in Adelaide, she spotted a course on Novel Writing offered by WEA.
She signed up immediately and made a commitment there and then that she would write a fantasy novel.
Wendy then completed other creative writing courses, joined the South Australia Writers’ Centre and published her first novel - Ferrasium.

I've experienced it first hand, and indeed left Peter a testimonial myself, so I was very happy to get the opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes when a new cover is created.

Michael has written stories of all kinds since his late teens and finally started publishing in 2013 after having a short story accepted by HarperCollins.

Mike Bodnar is a former continuity announcer, regional newsreader and TV & radio presenter.
He joined Radio New Zealand as an announcer in 1978, then moved into television in the early 80s.
His early explorations of publishing were a companion guide to the New Zealand Road Code for new drivers and a co-authored guide to personal security.
Mike’s latest book – Against the Current – is the story of how he and his wife left New Zealand for the UK, choosing instead to take a year-long detour through France, living and travelling on a boat.

Tim Lewis (writing as Timothy Michael Lewis) is a self-published author from London in the UK.
He spent 18 years working as a computer programmer and IT manager in the world of financial IT.
After the death of his wife, following a long illness, Tim reassessed his life goals and decided that he wanted to write stories.
He writes in the science fiction and fantasy genres, and to date has produced three books in the Timeshop series and two books in the ‘Magpies & Magic’ series. Tim is also the host of the Begin Self-Publishing Podcast.
Philippa Donovan is an editor who established her business – Smart Quill – in 2011.
Since then she has worked with around 300 authors and recommends to a stable of 50 literary agents based in the UK, Australia, and the US.
In 2014 she was named Publishing Rising Star and is Editorial Consultant for the Authors’ Club at Soho House West Hollywood.
Particularly exciting is Philippa’s recent move to LA will herald great opportunities for authors; connecting up selected manuscripts with literary agents, film and TV producers via an online platform, The Smart Quill Boutique.
Kate Turner is a UK based author who writes as KS Turner.
Her debut novel, Before the Gods, was the first from the epic fantasy trilogy, The Chronicles of Fate and Choice. Book Two – Tumultus – is also available with the final story – Time – currently in progress.
Kate originally trained as a designer and illustrator and when she isn’t writing, likes to draw, paint, sculpt, study maths, theology and philosophy and play music, among many other things!
Kate is doing some really interesting things in self-publishing, including setting up her own independent publishing company.
Andrew Lowe is an author and book editor from the North of England.
His writing has been published in several magazines and newspapers, including The Guardian, The Sunday Times and Mens Health.
He’s also worked in creative and digital roles with GQ, Vogue, Wired and Total Film. He writes psychological thrillers novels and short stories.
His latest novel, The Ghost, is the story of a troubled film critic who finds himself menaced by the victim of a childhood prank.
When he’s not working on his own words, he’s a fiction editor who specialises in copy editing but also offers developmental/structural work and copywriting.
Helen Fazal is a qualified proofreader and copy-editor.
She is a Professional Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders.
Helen has now copy-edited and proofread all six of my fiction books, so I invited her on the podcast to share her best tips and advice about this essential self-publishing process.
Matt Hilton quit his career as a police officer to pursue his love of writing – he’s been creating stories since childhood.

Children’s author Abiloa Bello, wrote her debut novel ‘Emily Knight I AM’ at the age of 12!
The book was independently published via Trafford Publishing and is the first book in a planned series, with book 2 in the pipeline.
Abiola is one of the few authors to self publish a book and then sign to a literary agent and she’ll be telling us all about that journey is our chat today.
She also co-founded The Author School with Helen Lewis.
Linzi Drew-Honey is a former glamour model and editor of Penthouse magazine.
She has also appeared on Page Three of The Sun. Linzi has just self-published her first book – Every Shade of Blue – which is her debut, erotic fiction novel.
The novel has been published through Matador, the self-publishing imprint of The Troubador Publishing Group.
Sarah Taylor is the Group Marketing Manager at Troubador Publishing.
That means Sarah works with Matador, which is the company’s self-publishing imprint and The Book Guild, which is their mainstream and partnership publishing company.
Sarah is a great person to speak to on the podcast because she’s very involved with the company’s Self-Publishing Conference (this year’s is on Saturday 7th May) and their Self-Publishing Experience Days.
Nina Ratcliffe has written and self-published a children’s book called ‘Dublin and Friends’.
She has another children’s story in production and there is a further book on an equine theme pencilled in for later this year.
She has also has the book ‘A New Home’ available on Amazon in Kindle format.
Nina has used some excellent marketing techniques to sell her print books to a local audience as well as some innovative Facebook strategies to build her audience.
Helen Lewis set up Literally PR which specialises in ‘creative, innovative and cost-effective PR solutions’ for authors.
Not only is she a public relations expert, Helen also runs The Author School, a training initiative for all authors to get them ‘from manuscript to book launch’.
One of the first disappointments that newly self-published authors experience is in finally publishing their book, then finding that nobody buys it.
There’s often a feeling that the biggest hurdle is in writing and publishing a book – but the real work begins after that, when it’s time to start making some sales.
That’s where Helen comes in!
Michael Holley describes himself on his blog as an indie author – a publishing consultant – a blogger and a speaker. He writes and self-publishes fiction and non-fiction titles.

Annie Weir’s debut, self-published novel is the psychological page turner ‘Judith Wants To Be Your Friend’.
The inspiration for the story came during a workshop taken as part of Annie’s MA, and after some time sitting on her computer hard drive, Annie decided the get the book published through Matador, the self-publishing imprint of The Troubador Publishing Group.
Annie is also the owner and manager of her own training company – IVITA Learning – so she’s also managed to balance her writing with a day-job.
