Wahlert comes back after a covid shorten season where they went 6-6, but that is not a reason to sleep on the Eagles in 2021.  Wahlert returns Jake Brosius who was the offensive leader on the infield hitting 405 and getting on base half of the time.  Jake also a force on the base path while stealing 12 bases in 12 games last season.  The Eagles also return the top rated player in the state of Iowa, Tommy Specht who is already on teams draft boards.  Tommy hit a whopping 525 last season with two bombs while driving in 20 RBIs in only 12 games.  Some people might argue that the best returns for Wahlert are in its pitching staff.  Wahlert returns three of its four top arms from a year ago.  Aaron Savary, Jared Walter, and Landon Stoll are the big three leading the pitching staff in 2021.

49 out of 50 states play high school baseball in the spring.  Iowa is the only state to play high school baseball in the summer.  This topic has always been a hot topic for debate.  Many in the community strongly support high school baseball in the summer, while many outside of the state will say it puts Iowa high school baseball behind the curve.  I invited two former coaches from Dubuque, who now coach in other states that play spring baseball.  They share experiences and give input to what it may look like to play spring baseball in Iowa.  The podcast also welcomed David Janes from the Dusty Rogers Baseball and Softball Academy to discuss how moving high school baseball from the summer to the spring would affect the business of academies and also showcases taking place in our state.  Our social media was buzzing with this topic with many questions and concerns and we addressed all of them in this 9 inning discussion.

Kevin Rhomberg grew up in Dubuque, leading Hempstead to its first ever state championship.  After staring in two sports at Hempstead Kevin later went to win an NAIA World Series while playing for the University of St. Francis.  Kevin was later drafted in the 14th round of the MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians.  Kevin was a league leader in many offensive categories while working his way up through the minors.  Kevin spent three seasons in the big leagues and ended with a career batting average of 383 and an on base percentage of 423.  Many often wonder, with those stats, why did Kevin only last three years in the big leagues?  Kevin opened up about his time playing Major League Baseball.  We ended the podcast with some fun!  Kevin was voted one of the Most Superstitious Athletes in Sports.  We asked him about some of his stories to find out with they were fact of fiction.  Sit down and enjoy this podcast with a local legend who still holds many records at Hempstead since leaving roughly 50 years ago.

Jimmy McDermott lived an interesting high school career.  He stared in two sports while playing at Wahlert Catholic High School.  He was a two sport star in two sports that not too many people prep in.  Jimmy was playing high level travel hockey while doing online learning while at Wahlert.  To be able to play baseball, Jimmy needed to attend school at Wahlert once a week.  Jimmy played in the same league as the folded Dubuque Thunderbirds.  Jimmy traveled all over the country playing hockey, while waiting for the weather to turn warm for him to star on the baseball field.  Jimmy ranks as one of WCHS top players and that led him to get many offers to be a two sport college player.  Jimmy is still playing both hockey and baseball at the college level.  This is a great story on being a multisport athlete and how to thrive playing both in college.

Is it possible that one of the most feared hitters to come through Dubuque in the past 10 or so years only stands roughly five feet and seven inches tall?  Size doesn't matter when facing Isaac in the batters box.  He has been causing havoc in the batters box and on the bases coming up through the Dubuque Independent League, Wahlert Catholic High School, the Zwingle Suns, and as a conference champion at Coe College.  Anybody who says you are not big enough, strong enough, tall enough, fast enough, etc.....  Go listen to this episode to get inspired and never give up on following your dream.

Brett Featherston AKA “Lumber” is one of the greatest Bobcats to ever suit up. Head Coach Casey Bryant said, “Brett was the first great player he ever coached.” Despite the backing of his coach, offensive numbers that still stand, Brett was not considered a college prospect. Brett went to UNI and needed to prove himself and he struggled for the first time in his baseball career. Brett put in the hard work and left UNI ranking in the top 10 in many offensive categories. Brett played in the Northwoods Leagues, but years later is still putting up HUGE numbers playing semipro for the Epworth Orioles.

Anywhere Dylan Gotto plays, he sets records.  Dylan Gotto held a few records while playing at Western Dubuque.  Dylan then went to Wartburg College and didn't waste time breaking more records.  In Dylan's first start of the season in 2019 he broke the strikeouts record in a season opener.  Wartburg is a storied baseball program and landing yourself in the record books is something not many can make claim to.  Dylan spent some of his time this summer playing in the Northwoods League for the Waterloo Bucks that led to a championship.  Not only is Dylan a great player, but he is now passing his knowledge of baseball while coaching for the Western Dubuque Bobcats.  This episode will make you laugh, will make you think, will push you to be better, and you may even shed a tear.

How does one person play at a high level in two different collegiate sports?  It does seem a bit impossible, but Connor McCaffery is making it work.  Connor would pack gyms and ballparks all over Iowa, especially Dubuque so people could get a glimpse of his game.  Connor stared in two sports during his time at Iowa City West, but what sport would he play in college?  Well Connor selected to play both baseball and basketball for the University of Iowa.  Connor goes into great depth on how he, his coaches, and family make it work.  Connor also shares his work with the University of Iowa and the Big Ten Conference in bringing awareness to social injustices that plague our community.   This is one podcast you will not want to miss.

How does a small town kid from Dubuque, Iowa make it in the NFL?  Tons of hard work, dedication, and always going the extra mile to start.  Riley McCarron had a historic high school career as a multi sport athlete and was bound for a college baseball career.  After an outstanding football season during his senior year, football coaches took notice.  Riley hung up the baseball glove and grabbed a football helmet.  Riley patiently waited his turn and during his senior year at the University of Iowa, opportunity came knocking.  After an injury to a starting wide receiver, Riley jumped in and the Hawkeyes never looked back.  Riley won Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week, played in the Big Ten Championship Game, and played in the Rose Bowl.  Right when Riley thought his football playing days were past him, the NFL came calling.  Riley signed as a free agent with the Houston Texans and was coached by All-Pro Wide Receiver Wes Welker.  Riley was later cut by the Texas, but landed with a dynasty of the New England Patriots.  Riley eventually made the 53 man active roster and ended up earning a Super Bowl ring for New England.  We talk Brady, Gronk, George Kittle, and so many other big names you see on Sunday.
