Welcome to First Christian Church and to the theological ponderings of Pastor Laura Hutchinson. My focus is loving God through Jesus Christ; loving God's people as God loves me; and telling the people of the world how very much God loves them!
Looking at all the ways mothers and motherhood are represented in scripture is so comforting. It's not easy being called to such a noble vocation. Thankfully, the Bible does not honor the perfect. Instead, it highlights the imperfections, challenges, and blessings of all the ways motherhood comes to us! Referencing 1 Kings, Genesis, the Gospels, and 2 Timothy... this may be the first time you've heard of some of these moms.
1 John 1:5-10This episode covers sin, forgiveness, the power of confession, Christ is the Light of the World...
Mark 1:9-15We're all used to hearing about repentance and sin in direct relation to Hell. But Jesus said, "Repent and believe the GOOD NEWS!" There must be more to it than just telling someone how to avoid eternal damnation. Is there a GOOD way to talk about sin and repentance that doesn't leave you feeling terrible about yourself? Yes. Yes, there absolutely is!
Today, we are celebrating the fact that God is answering prayers at First Christian Church! But why? And how? And how LONG have we been praying? And how exciting is it to finally hear God say, "YES!"And in honor of Black History Month, we're ending today's episode with a folk version of WE SHALL OVERCOME. Matthew 7:7-87 ‘Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be openedJohn 15:7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
The main scripture in preaching on today comes from 1 Corinthians 9:16-23.The rest of the scripture verses I mention are: Matt. 3:2, 1 Cor. 15:1-4, Mark 1:14-15, John 3:16, 1 John 4:9-10, Revelation 14:16, Matt 24:14, & Mark 16:15.

1 Kings 3:5-12 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask what I should give you.” And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?”
It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you.”
Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43 - In today's sermon we explore the parable of the Good Sower, where Jesus gives us a glimpse into one reason God may refuse to act in the face of evil in our world. I would love to know your thoughts on this, so feel free to leave me a message. I completely understand if my reflection on this portion of Matthew leaves you feeling dissatisfied in light of any suffering you may have experienced. I assure you that I'm the first to admit I know less than nothing about most things. But I know that God is good, even if people are not. Perhaps there's some truth in here, even if I'm only scratching the surface?
We always find what we look for, good or bad. Look for the good, look for God, you will find them.
Based on 1 John 4:1-6, we're exploring the need for Christian discernment, and the dangers of NOT being discerning in our world.
From Mark 10:35-34 Is Christian Nationalism favored by God and supported by scripture? I'll tell you what I think. What do YOU think?
I was invited to speak about this topic at the Rotary Club of Calhoun County. I ran out of time at 32 minutes, so I finished the last 5 minutes after everyone left. At that point, the servers had come in and were very enthusiastic listeners!
Exodus 20:12 tells us to honor our parents. It's one of the BIG TEN Commandments. But what does that mean? And how do we do that if our parents (today, our mothers) aren't always who we need, or want, them to be?
These are, indeed, troubling times, almost as troubling as things were for the disciples as they were being prepared for Jesus's inevitable murder. But as we reflect upon Ephesians 6 and John 14, we will see that there is no reason to be troubled, and we have nothing to fear. The 23rd Psalm is a favorite of most People of the Abrahamic faiths (Jewish A AND Christian). Today we delve into the deep and relevant meaning of this beautiful writing. Why does the Church Universal (the Body of Christ) exist in this world? Why are we here? Are we a social club where people who believe in Jesus can hang out, eat good food, support each other and make each other feel good? Or is there a bigger purpose for us? Are we called to do more than simply gather in the church building each week?

Sin destroys. God does not want us to sin because God does not want to see us destroyed by it. God also does not call upon us to destroy other sinners. That, too, is sin.

Concerning Anger
‘You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, “You shall not murder”; and “whoever murders shall be liable to judgement.” But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgement; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, “You fool”, you will be liable to the hell of fire. So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.
Concerning Adultery
‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall not commit adultery.” But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.

‘It was also said, “Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.” But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Salt and Light

When we're talking about abominations in the bible, we're talking behavior God loathes. God doesn't like it when we turn our backs on God, and God doesn't like it when we turn our backs on our fellow human being. Love God, and love your neighbor. To not do that is an abomination.
