Dave Kobel summarizes recent school health research into digestible snippets for education stakeholders.
This article jumps into Dr. David Birch's recent commentary posted in the Journal of School Health that calls for an expanded focus on social justice in health education. This expanded focus, he argues, will make health curricula more authentic, better prepare students to engage as citizens, and exercise social emotional learning skills. He makes suggestions for revisions to the National Health Education Standards, CDC's Characteristics of an Effective Health Education Curriculum, and how to pose guiding questions as they relate to health content. This video finishes with a few examples of how schools are doing this currently.

School Health Shout-out is back and more ok than ever. I had to get a new computer, and learn Premiere Rush, but I am back to making videos! This article tests an assumption that serves as a barrier to health promotion activities - that health promotion hurts academic attainment.

Today's episode (the first in a while) is from an American Academy of Pediatrics Position Statement titled "The Impact of Racism on Child and Adolescent Health." This was written by Dr. Maria Trent, Dr. Danielle Dooley, and Dr. Jacqueline Douge in August 2019. https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/pediatrics/144/2/e20191765.full.pdf
This episode discusses racism as a social determinant of health, history of race in the US, the types of racism, how it effects education, and some recommendations by the authors.
If you manage to get through the whole episode, there are a few jokes at the end - by the Upper Peninsula Bureau for Active Recreation and Fun, a (fictitious) organization that attempts to get folks to visit the UP. It was performed in an accent that I hope to someday obtain when I retire in God's Gift to Michigan, the Upper Peninsula.
