A very short poem from the great American poet, Langston Hughes that seemed fitting for our socially-distant times. A short story by the master sci-fi writer Algis Budrys exploring the nature of talent and merit. A quote from George Eliot’s “The Mill on the Floss” to close.
Written in 1935, this poem felt especially poignant during the shelter-in-place extension we’ve just been given here at the end of March 2020. The idea of time having his way against all of our human plans particularly struck me.
In the beginning there was...well, just me. Sitting in a very old rocking chair in my home library and wanting to share works that have meaning to me. In this first episode, I read a poem that I was introduced to in college and that has always stuck with me. Many apologies for the quality of audio; this may be rough for a bit as I grow into better equipment.
