Welcome to the SDCBA’s “Meet & Confer” podcast hosted by SDCBA Members, Renee Stackhouse and Jim Crosby. “Meet & Confer” is a podcast for and about our unique San Diego legal community and we are quite proud of this inaugural episode.
Our hosts, Renee Stackhouse and Adriana Linares talk with the Stephanie Atkinson (2021 Chair) and Jake Zindulka (2022 Chair) of the San Diego County Bar Association’s New Lawyer Division (NLD). The NLD is a community for new lawyers in their first 7 years of practice. Hear from Stephanie and Jake about how NLD organizes social events, educational programs, and community outreach opportunities as well as how the NLD has been a major force in their professional development and sucess! Formed in 1979, with a handful of Latino attorneys, SDLRLA has grown to represent over three hundred Latino and Latina lawyers practicing in San Diego County. In Episode #17 of the San Diego County Bar Association’s Meet and Confer, hosts Renee Stackhouse and Adriana Linares chat with Dennis Tempko, an SDCBA member practicing appellate law in San Diego. We invited Dennis on to talk to us about his passion project and startup, HyperCite. Dennis invented and developed HyperCite to address a real-life pain point he was experiencing in his own practice (he’s still a practicing lawyer!)- hyperlinking citations from a parent document to the child(ren) documents referenced in the main doc. HyperCite® is web-based software that autonomously combines an appellate brief, motion, or other filing with the record on appeal. Once combined, HyperCite® simultaneously creates hyperlinks between textual record citations in the brief, petition, motion, or otherwise, to the exact pages cited contained within the record on appeal. The record on appeal for HyperCite® hyperlinking purposes does not just include items such as a Reporter’s Transcript, Clerk’s Transcript, appendices, or exhibits. HyperCite® also hyperlinks citations that cite to previous briefing, motions, or any other conceivable source document.

Going solo can be both stressful and exciting – leaving the comforts of a fully supported big law firm can be hard. But the allure of having the freedom to practice law and serve clients the way you want is also hard to resist. David heard the solo call and after a few fits and starts, has built a statewide practice that is both satisfying and rewarding. In this episode of Meet and Confer, David tells Renee and Jim how our member technology officer, Adriana Linares, was able to point him in the right direction as he built his mobile and secure practice using affordable technology solutions and tools.
David Leatherberry provides transactional, regulatory and licensing support to healthcare providers. He is counsel for the San Diego Psychological Association and currently chairs the Health Law Committee for the Business Law Section, California Lawyers Association. David Leatherberry is a graduate of UC Berkeley and the University of San Diego School of Law where he currently teaches contract drafting.

Yahairah Aristy is the president of the Foundation and a Deputy Public Defender for the County of San Diego handling felony cases.
Andrea St. Julian is the president of the Association and practices criminal and civil appellate law.
In this episode of Meet and Confer, SDCBA member-hosts, James “Jim” Crosby and Renee Stackhouse sit down with local immigration attorneys Teodora Purcell and Jesse Imbriano.
Jesse Imbriano is the supervising attorney at Casa Cornelia Law Center, a pro bono law firm in San Diego. Casa Cornelia Law Center provides direct representation in humanitarian immigration applications, including asylum and related relief and protection, special immigrant juvenile status, U and T visas, and VAWA self-petitions and cancellation of removal. Mr. Imbriano directly supervises the legal work of the law firm—including a robust team of staff attorneys and hundreds of volunteer attorneys from the private bar—while maintaining an active case load. He is regularly invited to speak and provide trainings within this practice area to immigration practitioners and other attorneys, social service providers interacting with members of the immigrant community, law enforcement agencies, and the local judiciary. Immediately prior to joining Casa Cornelia Law Center, he served as an attorney advisor with the Executive Office for Immigration Review. Mr. Imbriano is a graduate of the Villanova University School of Law.
Teodora D. Purcell practices in the area of immigration law. She has extensive experience in all facets of U.S. immigration law with focus on business immigration. Ms. Purcell advises corporate and individual clients on a variety of employment and family-based nonimmigrant and immigrant petitions, I-9 compliance, applications for U.S. citizenship and other immigration benefits. Ms. Purcell is certified in Immigration and Nationality Law by the California State Bar, Board of Legal Specialization. She is a frequently invited speaker on business immigration topics and teaches an Immigration Law class at the UCSD ABA approved paralegal program and a member of the SDCBA Board. Ms. Purcell is a 2001 graduate of the University of San Diego School of Law and a graduate of Sofia University, St. Clement Ohridski School of Law. She is fluent in Bulgarian and conversant in Russian and Spanish.

Renee Stackhouse (née Galente) is a serious force in San Diego’s legal community, recognized equally for her tenacity, diligence, legal knowledge, and exceptional trial skills. As an advocate, Renee is lauded for her strategic and empathetic approach, and she is known as a leader in the profession and the community. Ms. Stackhouse’s substantial volunteer experience also has included leadership roles with the San Diego County Bar Association, serving as a Vice President on the Board of Directors, and inaugural Chair of the Association’s high-profile Law and Technology committee, which was responsible for not only guiding educational program related to technology, but also hiring a Member Technology Officer to assist lawyers in acquiring basic technology competency. She also serves the organization as regular contributor to San Diego Lawyer magazine, and as frequent speaker on social media, trial skills, and general civil litigation. In addition, Renee has served San Diego’s legal community as the President of San Diego La Raza Lawyers and on the board of Lawyers Club of San Diego. She earned her J.D. from Thomas Jefferson School of Law, graduating magna cum laude, and earned a B.S. in Management and Marketing from Park University, also graduating magna cum laude. She is a 2012 graduate of the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College. She earned a Women in Leadership Executive Certificate from Cornell University in 2019.
James D. Crosby is a highly experienced business litigator and trial attorney with offices in San Diego, California. Mr. Crosby represents entities and individuals, both plaintiffs and defendants, in complex and general business, commercial, contract, intellectual property, unfair competition, securities, real property, and business tort litigation in state and federal courts. He has successfully represented clients throughout California as well as in New York, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina and South Dakota. Mr. Crosby has received the highest ranking of 10.0, Superb, from AVVO. Mr. Crosby was named a San Diego Daily Transcript 2015-2017 Top Attorney for Corporate Litigation, a San Diego Business Journal “Best of the Bar” for 2015-2017, a San Diego Super Lawyer 2014 through 2018 for Business Litigation, a Southern California Super Lawyer in 2014 for Business, Securities and Intellectual Property Litigation, and a San Diego Magazine Top Lawyer in 2014 through 2018 for Complex Business & Commercial Litigation.
A native Southern Californian, Mr. Crosby was born in Los Angeles, grew up in Santa Barbara and has lived in San Diego since 1974. He attended San Diego State University, receiving a B.S. degree in Marine Biology in 1978. Mr. Crosby attended the University of San Diego School of Law and received his law degree in 1983. Mr. Crosby and his wife, Jill, happily married for over 30 years, have three grown daughters. They reside in San Diego and enjoy sailing, water-skiing, the beach, music, concerts, dining out, cooking, art, books, and, most importantly, spending time when they can with their daughters.
