Nicola Sturgeon’s coming under pressure to step in and save the children’s ward at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.
Scottish Labour made the call during First Minister’s Questions at Holyrood yesterday and Renfrewshire Council have now issued an emergency motion calling on the Scottish Government to reverse the health board’s decision to close Ward 15.
Ahead of the Scottish Parliament election last year, Nicola Sturgeon was asked in a live TV debate about proposals to close the children’s ward at the Royal Alexandra Hospital by local resident Gordon Clark.
The SNP leader replied: “There are no proposals to close that particular ward.”

Health bosses have voted to close the children’s ward at Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital. The final decision rests with the Scottish Government, but if given the green light young people who use the service would now be transferred to the new children’s hospital in Glasgow. Dozens of protestors attended today’s meeting to express their anger at plans to axe the facility but in the end medics said it was in the best interest of the patients to centralise services. It is anticipated around 8,0006 episodes of care would transfer with 12,063 continuing at the RAH. Our reporter Shiona McCallum was at the meeting:
Drivers are being warned to brace themselves for delays as 10-weeks’ worth of roadworks get underway on the M8 later.
Workmen have been tasked with completing the so-called ‘missing link’ to connect the new stretch of motorway with the Baillieston Interchange.
As a result drivers will be re-routed via the A8 near Bargeddie.
The roadworks will start at 8pm this evening and are part of the wider M8/M73/M74 improvements project.

23 year old Cameron Logan died in the blaze early on New Year's Day which has left his girlfriend fighting for life.

Detectives investigating a deliberate house fire which left a young man dead and his girlfriend fighting for her life say it is not yet clear who the intended victim of the "despicable" attack was. Cameron Logan, 23, was killed in the blaze at his family home in Achray Place, Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire, in the early hours of New Year's Day. His partner Rebecca Williams, 24, who is known as Bex and is a journalist at Global Radio, is in a critical condition at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. Mr Logan's parents, both 54, suffered smoke inhalation and have since been released from hospital. The family dog, Gomez, also died in the fire. Police are treating the case as one of murder and attempted murder. Officers said there is nothing to suggest the wrong house was targeted and stress they are keeping an open mind about who the intended victim or victims were. Police moved to reassure the local community that they believe the attack was an isolated incident, as they sought information from the public to help track down those responsible. A court bid to bring a rare private prosecution against Glasgow bin lorry crash driver Harry Clarke has been rejected by senior judges.
The family of three crash victims took their case for the 59-year-old to be put on trial to the Appeal Court in Edinburgh earlier this year.
The unusual legal move followed a controversial Crown Office decision not to prosecute Mr Clarke, who had blacked out behind the wheel on the day of the fatal crash in December 2014.
Judges Lady Dorrian, Lord Menzies and Lord Drummond Young had been considering the Bill for Criminal Letters since hearing final arguments in the case in October and ruled on Friday the family cannot pursue a private prosecution of Mr Clarke.
The court also rejected a similar plea for a private prosecution of motorist William Payne, lodged by the families of students Mhairi Convy and Laura Stewart, who were knocked down and killed in Glasgow in 2010.
Catherine Cairney, Laura's aunt, reacted to the decision outside court:
Engineering group Doosan Babcock is to cut almost 500 jobs across its UK sites, with the majority in Scotland.
The company, which employs around 3,800 people across the UK, said the bulk of the positions affected are in management, back-office support services and at the machining and assembly facility in Renfrew, which is to close.
A total of 470 jobs are at risk and a consultation has started with affected staff.

Families of those who lost their lives in the Clutha helicopter tragedy are demanding to know when a fatal accident inquiry (FAI) into the accident will be held.
Three years since a police helicopter plummeted into the roof of the Clutha Vaults pub in Glasgow killing 10 people, families have called on the Crown Office to provide clarity on the issue.
They have issued a statement through their solicitor asking for confirmation of when the FAI will begin.

New figures reveal that young people are not going to family, teachers, carers and others who are responsible for looking after them when they are experiencing negative thoughts and feelings.
Young people say they are not taken seriously by adults when it comes to mental health.

Police investigating the murder of a man shot in his car are carrying out a forensic examination of a vehicle later found on fire to establish whether it is linked to the crime.
Euan Johnston, 26, was shot in a "targeted, planned attack" as he sat in his black Audi RS4 estate with a friend at a junction in Shields Road, Glasgow, at around 11.40pm on Tuesday.
His attacker was travelling in a dark Audi Q5 that had pulled up beside Mr Johnston's car. No-one else was injured.
Mr Johnston was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but he died a short time later.
Just before midnight, police were called to a report of an Audi Q5 on fire in Bracken Street in the Parkhouse area in the north of Glasgow.
Police said the vehicle is being examined to establish if there is any link to the murder in Shields Road.
Detectives are appealing to anyone was saw a vehicle being driven at speed in the area at that time to contact them.
Mr Johnston had been out for a meal with a friend, a 29-year-old man, and the pair were returning home when the attack took place in front of some members of the public when he stopped his car at a pedestrian crossing.

A cross-party group of MPs at Westminster will today start the legislative process to introduce a new law, which will tighten up the marketing of formula milks and other infant feeding products.
Alison Thewliss MP, who is leading with the proposal, will today seek approval from the House of Commons to go ahead and draft the bill, making way for it to be given a second reading in Parliament.
The legislative proposal has strong cross-party backing, including from influential Conservative MP and chair of the Commons Health Select Committee, Dr Sarah Wollaston.

It's a five minute appointment that could save your life but health boards warn the number of women being screened for cervical cancer has fallen to its lowest level for almost a decade. NHS stats found that at the end of March 2016 just 69.2% of eligible women had turned up to their smear test in the last three years, down from 76.5% in 2007. Women are only invited to go for a check-up from the age of 25, but Glasgow doctor Emily Crichton, who specialises in public health medicine, says many young women are failing to take up the offer:

She is undergoing "routine monitoring" by the infectious diseases team and remains in a stable condition, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) said.
The nurse was infected with the Ebola virus while working in Sierra Leone as a volunteer for Save The Children.
On her return from west Africa at the end of 2014, she was quickly struck down and was treated at the Royal Free Hospital in London.
Ms Cafferkey was discharged in January 2015, with doctors saying she had completely recovered and was not infectious in any way.
However, she was readmitted to hospital twice - in October 2015 and February 2016 - after suffering complications linked to the disease, at one stage falling critically ill.
An NHSGGC spokeswoman said on Thursday: "Ms Cafferkey was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital under routine monitoring by the infectious diseases team.
"She is undergoing further investigations and her condition remains stable."
