UltraSignUp link: https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=106885The Southern States 200 will be one of only three known Mountain TRAIL, POINT-TO-POINT, 200 mile races in the U.S. The run will follow the Legendary Pinhoti Trail from near Dalton, Georgia to the top of Mt Cheaha, the highest point in Alabama. The run will have 27,628 feet of elevation gain over 201 miles. The course will be fully marked with prismatic reflective flags, ribbons and signs. Runners will have 100 hours to complete the 201 mile journey. There will be 15 full aid stations along the way. Each with have "real food" made-to-order, day and night. Medical personnel will be available at most aid stations. Five of the full aid stations will also be Sleep Stations.
2023 Chicago Marathon will be 11th Chicago and 10th pacing. I will pace again 4:30h. I hope to see you there.

MR144: In 2019, Bob was the overall winner and broke the race record at A Race For The Ages ("ARFTA”) in Manchester, TN. Bob completed 230 miles in just under 74 hours, besting the old record of 228 miles in this fixed time race. Since 2003-2003, Bob ran many distance races around the US and Canada and internationally.

After college, she competed in the Seattle Rock n’ Roll marathon and ran my fastest marathon to date (3:09). She also ran 2017 Boston Marathon 14 weeks pregnant. MR92: In this episode, I talked with Julie Weiss “Marathon Goddess”. About 10 years ago, Julie was a non-runner who was overweight and depressed. Once she started to take on running, she did not need the help of anti-depression. As she was making progress in her running journey, she lost her biggest fan and supporter - her father – due to Pancreatic Cancer. Since a sudden loss of her father, she has taken her life mission to fight Pancreatic Cancer through running and support cause by raising funds for search. In recent years, Julie ran 52 marathons in 52 weeks to raise over $400,000. Julie is also one of seven featured runners in the inspiring documentary "Spirit of the Marathon II". Julie ran her 100th marathon at the 2016 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon and is now working on a book to be released in 2018.

Eira's Bio: Erica (Braswell) Speegle was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. She got her start running for Oak Mountain Middle School and running local 5k's on the weekend with her dad. After a successful high school career at Pelham, she headed to Auburn University, where she was multiple times All-SEC on the track. Since graduating from Auburn her focus has been road racing, with a gradual drift from 5k towards the marathon. She has recorded back-to-back top-20 finishes in Chicago - 2:46:53 (16th - 2012) and 2:45:23 (19th - 2013). She placed 10th in the 2013 California International Marathon with a time of 2:41:17, qualifying her for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Background on Hope for Autumn Foundation: In 2008, Travis and Anne Diggs held a small backyard crawfish boil to raise funds for a family friend whose child, Autumn, was battling cancer. The event was a success, and was held again in 2009. In 2010, the Diggs decided to benefit another family and were introduced to the Knerrs, whose daughter, Emily was battling cancer. The Knerrs were so grateful that they asked to be a part of the event each year, which continues to grow. In 2012, Hope for Autumn Foundation was founded by Travis Diggs and Amanda Knerr. The foundation has evolved from benefiting 1-3 families per year at the annual crawfish boil, which currently has grown to the size of 2500 attendees, to providing year round assistance to families who apply through the website, funding childhood cancer research, and raising awareness of childhood cancer.

MR61: In this week's episode, I talked with Adam Roach who is 4 times winner of BigSur Marathon. He was the second overall winner for the 2017 BigSur Marathon as well as Boston2BigSur Marathon challenge. Adam competed in track, cross country, football and basketball at Port Huron High School with best times of 4:19 in the 1600m run. In college, he ran track and cross country at Saginaw Valley State University from 2002-2006. He Qualified for the NCAA Division II championships as an individual 4 times in 3 different events including the 1 mile run, 5000m and the 3000m steeplechase; he finished his career with personal bests of 14:26 in the 5000m and a SVSU school record of 4:09 in the indoor mile. After college, Adam moved up in distance to focus on Half Marathon and Marathon distances posting personal bests of 1:08 and 2:24 respectfully.
Adam's marathon success includes winning the Big Sur Marathon in 4 times including second overall in 2017, as well as a 10th place finish at the 2014 L.A. Marathon. He set his personal best time in the marathon at the California International Marathon in December of 2013 with a time of 2:24.29 .

MR54: Finally, I was able to catch up with the Birmingham Trail Runners parent, friend, mentor, race director, and more - David Tosch. David is very busy year around to setup trail racing events, planning races, running, training, and more. David and Marye Jo Tosch founded the Southeastern Trail Runs - southeasterntrailruns.com, which has been great asset to the Birmingham Trail running community. David has helped to put the Southeastern trail running on the map with many races including Birmingham Stage race, Lake Martin 100, Blood Rock, and more.
Personally, David has been great friend, mentor, and inspiration to me. David did not put me in trail, but he kept me in trail. With the start of 5th Southeastern Trail Series this week, I can say that I also grew as trail runner with series. I cannot thank enough for all love, care, encouragements, and support that I get from David and Marye Jo Tosch.

Currently, Frankie is the Chief Running Officer of the company. He is also the cross country coach for Belen Jesuit School since '02, during that tenure he has lead them to 7 State Championships. Ruiz was a T&F collegiate athlete at FIU. In '09, Frankie Ruiz launched the popular Run Club Network together with Nike, which encompasses over 15,000 runners each year. He is now Miami’s Nike+ Run Club Head Coach. Not too long ago, he was invited to give a TEDx Miami Talk on the Running Movement in Miami. He is also involved in Plan Z, Ludlam Trail & the Underline among several other major park initiatives. About The National Center for Sports Safety (NCSS)
Mission:
The National Center for Sports Safety (NCSS) was founded to promote the importance of injury prevention and safety on all levels of the youth sports community through education and research. NCSS focuses on decreasing the number and/or severity of injuries through developing and teaching sports safety courses and collecting, analyzing and researching injury data.
History:
In 2001, the National Center for Sports Safety (NCSS), a nonprofit, was founded by renowned orthopedic surgeon Lawrence J. Lemak, M.D. NCSS was created to promote the importance of injury prevention and safety on all levels of youth sports through education and research.
To raise national safety standards and discuss the growing concerns of youth sports, NCSS held a “Setting the Standard” Summit in Birmingham, Alabama (2002). The purpose was to “Raise the Standard” in youth sports through sports safety awareness. The summit was a success with more than 30 delegates from across the country coming together to collaborate their expertise to develop content for a sports safety course.
Two years later, after intensive research and content development, NCSS launched a sports safety course called PREPARE. PREPARE educates coaches, volunteers, parents and anyone who is responsible for an athlete vital skills that could help save a child’s life on the playing field or court. The PREPARE course gives the sports community the confidence and knowledge to prevent and respond to injuries and emergency situations until a qualified medical professional arrives. PREPARE is also available as an online course.
In 2007, NCSS achieved 501(c) (3) status after satisfying state and federal requirements. NCSS continues to partner with many national governing bodies, youth leagues and state high school athletic associations to educate coaches on the importance of sports safety.
In 2010, NCSS produced a parent and athlete video to educate parents and athletes on preventative measures and ways to be proactive in youth sports safety. The 16-minute video covers five essential topics that parents and athletes need to be familiar with in the event of an emergency on the field or court. The video includes information regarding concussions, pre-participation physicals, cardiac and genetic disorders, heat illnesses and staph (Staphylococcus aureus)/ MRSA infections. The parent and athlete video has been reviewed and approved by the AHSAA medical advisory committee and can be viewed here.
This same year, NCSS began focusing on event fundraisers to help build further support for NCSS so that additional tools and resources for coaches, parents and athletes could be built and provided to continue “Raising the Standard” in youth sports safety.
Furthermore, NCSS continues to expand by educating coaches, parents and volunteers in basic safety techniques and emergency responses to ensure the playing fields and courts are safe for youth athletes across the nation.
In June of 2016, NCSS was selected as a finalist for the Birmingham Business Journal Nonprofit Awards. NCSS was nominated in the $500k-$999k category alongside the following nonprofits: Magic Moments, Triumph Services, and the Birmingham Education Foundation

Here Jackie’s Bio: Jackie is a nationally competitive ultra trail runner currently living in Atlanta GA having recently moved from the Northeast region (Delaware) this summer. She holds numerous female course records for trail and ultra races including the Twisted Branch 100K (NY), Stumpys trail marathon (DE), Labor pains 12 hour race (PA), Maryland Heat Race (MD), Santa Barbara Red Rocks 50M (CA),Dirty German 50K (PA), XTerra Big Elk marathon (MD), Mystery Mountain Marathon (GA), and most recently, the Pinhoti 100 mile trail race in AL. In May 2015 she finished 2nd female in the USATF 50mile National Trail Championship race in Ithaca NY. In October 2015 she finished 2nd female in a very competitive RRCA’s PA 100 Mile Trail championship race running the 4th fastest female time in course history. At the end of the Ultrarunning Race Series this past spring, she was awarded 2nd overall female in the MidAtlantic region and 11th overall female in North America.
Since moving to Georgia in June, she has won the women’s race of every race she has entered, anywhere from the shorter distance Red Top Roaster 9.9 mile and the Frogtown 10 miler to the Georgia Jewel 50 miler to the Pinhoti 100 miler. She also cinched overall wins at the Snakebite 50K and Mystery Mountain marathon.
Jackie is a physical therapist, biomechanist, and neuroscientist at Emory University and studies how our movement patterns are related to our health, function and performance. Both in her clinical work as a physical therapist and in her laboratory research, she strives to help others achieve their goals by overcoming obstacles in their health and movement patterns. It was fun talking with Eron Osterhaus – Product Line Manager for Columbia Montrail and learning about an art of trail shoes making. As much shoes as we put on to run roads and/or trail, it is fun to learn about how shoes goes from a thought – design – product – eventually land to our feet.
Note: I have been trying few different styles of Montrail trail shoes last few months. During Birmingham 3 days Stage race, I exclusively used Montrail shoes. It is a great option for trail running shoes.

Bart Yasso joined Runner’s World in 1987 to develop the groundbreaking Runner’s World Race Sponsorship Program, creating a vehicle for Runner’s World to work with over 7,000 races representing 4 million runners per year. Inducted into the Running USA Hall of Champions.
Yasso also invented the Yasso 800s, a marathon-training schedule used by thousands around the world. It was great catching up with Kathleen Hamrick, Susanne Patterson Moore, & Bill Hamrick before they headed down to Amazon to be a part of 157 miles race.
Here are their travel plan: They will depart Birmingham, AL on October 4th and land in Santarem, Brazil on October 5th. They will board a boat in Alter Do Chao on the 6th for 12 hours ride to the start area of the race. They will begin the race on October 9. The race will end on October 15.

I got an opportunity to talk to the youngest winner of the Western States Endurance Run – Andrew Miller. In 2016 Andrew became the youngest Western States champion in the 42-year history of the race. Andrew finished the 100 miles trail race in 15 hours, 39 minutes.

In this episode I talked Kelly Peoples about the BellCenter(www.thebellcenter.org) as well as how to be a BellRunner.
Since 1984, The Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs has provided quality early intervention services in a center-based program in Birmingham. Infants and toddlers at risk for developmental delay receive services from transdisciplinary teams which include a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, a speech-language pathologist and an early childhood special education teacher as each child works on specific individual developmental goals.
The Bell Center’s BellRunner program motivates and trains runners and walkers who want to participate in the Mercedes Marathon and Half Marathon by providing coaching and training runs while pairing BellRunners with Bell Center children.

Prince is a member of the Birmingham Track Club, the Darkside Running Club, and the United States Running Streak Association (having run every day since July 1, 2004). Prince became involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as a participant in the Walt Disney World Marathon of 2008 after his daughter Katie was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia on November 3, 2006.
