  • Someone who is humble, but does not have an "aw-shucks" attitude

The best speakers are Experts who also view themselves as Fellow Travelers.

  • Keep your fee structure simple
  • Gather all the information you need from Meeting Planners in one Intake Form

Show Notes: 11 Things Great Speakers Do Differently #7 - Only Ask For Business IF You Are a Good Fit This strategy might seem counterintuitive, but in the long run, it is better to turn down an engagement that is not a good fit for you rather than lie and pretend it is a good fit.

When you are honest about what you speak about and how you best serve clients, you will often discover the organization:

  • Has other opportunities for you that are a better fit
  • Will invite you to speak the following year
  • Will refer you to other organizations

If you are not a good fit for an engagement, a great way to serve the organization is to recommend another speaker who is a better fit.

Show Notes: 11 Things Great Speakers Do Differently #6 - Serve Before Selling Decision-Makers buy from people they:

  • Know
  • Like (aka—respect)
  • Trust

However, most speakers have the attitude of Always Be Selling, so they come out of the gate selling.

Great speakers, on the other hand, do things differently.

Great speakers serve before trying to sell:

  • They serve first, second, third, fourth, fifth, etc.
  • They "court" before asking for a "commitment"

Show Notes: 11 Things Great Speakers Do Differently #3 - Create Experiences Good speakers tell a lot of stories that blend in together and lose their effectiveness.

Great speakers tell fewer, more strategic stories that are more impactful.

If your presentation revolves around one story, don't just tell the story. Instead, create an experience by stepping out of the story from time to time to make teaching points.

If your presentation does not revolve around one story, a better approach than telling multiple stories is to share fewer stories and create other experiences that enhance the presentation.

Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #7 - Record Everything Any time you get the opportunity to speak, especially early in your career as a speaker, record it.

Preferably a video recording. But at minimum, get an audio recording.

Why?

Because nothing will help you improve as a speaker than seeing and hearing yourself speak. PERIOD.

Here are two quick thoughts...

First, be prepared because watching yourself present can be brutal, especially early on. So give yourself some grace and realize your speaking is a work in progress. And most importantly, don't give up. Everything worth doing is worth doing poorly at first.

Second, don't make recording complicated or distracting. Just set up your smartphone on a table or tripod and hit record. Or have someone else take care of the recording for you. Bottom line, if you make things too complicated, you won't do it. And if it's too distracting, you won't be focused on your presentation.

I hope these 7 simple tips for becoming a better speaker have been helpful. For review, here they are one last time:

  • 1 - Know Your Topic

  • 2 - Capture New Ideas

  • 3 - Get Your Reps In

  • 4 - Focus on Serving

  • 5 - Create an Experience for Your Audience

  • 6 - Look People in the Eye When Speaking

  • 7 - Record Everything

Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #6 - Look People in the Eye Why Is This Important?

It helps you make personal connections with audience members. In fact, it's probably the simplest thing you can do to enhance the impact of your presentation and persuade audience members to your point of view.

Why Is This Challenging?

Looking into another person's eyes, especially when you're on stage talking to a group of people, just feels awkward. And if you're nervous, it feels even more awkward.

How to Improve Your Eye Contact?

  • Remember that you are speaking to individuals and not just a group.
  • Find audience members who are engaged and are already looking at you.
  • Sustain eye contact with each individual long enough to make a connection, then move on. Three to five seconds is usually a good guideline.
  • Avoid looking at people who you can tell feel awkward with eye contact. That will feel more like a stare-down than eye contact.
  • Be prepared. It's practically impossible to make eye contact when you're in your head trying to remember your presentation.

Finally, here are the tips we've covered so far:

  • 1 - Know Your Topic

  • 2 - Capture New Ideas

  • 3 - Get Your Reps In

  • 4 - Focus on Serving

  • 5 - Create an Experience for Your Audience

Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #5 - Create an Experience for Your Audience In the previous episodes of this series, I mentioned that if you want to serve your audience well, it's best to create a speech that is both enjoyable and educational.

Yet the truth is that the vast majority of speakers today focus almost exclusively on delivering content. They might throw in a joke or two and maybe even share a short illustration, but most of the time, it's content, content, content.

Have you ever sat through a 60 or 90-minute presentation that is all content? By the end, you probably feel like you've been sprayed with a firehose. What's worse is that you don't walk away remembering anything specific because anything worth remembering was crowded out by the rest of the content. It's just too much!

So how can you avoid overwhelming your audience with straight content?

Create an experience!

If you want to become a better speaker, you need to realize that less in more when it comes to presenting. So instead of cramming more content into their presentations, they look for ways to make their content sticky (aka so memorable that it sticks with audiences after the presentation).

In fact, instead of outlining their speech in the same way they would outline a research paper, they develop their speech like a scriptwriter storyboarding a movie. They ask themselves questions like:

  • What is the one big idea that I want my audience to understand?
  • How can I make that idea relevant? How can I make it come alive?
  • Can I take the audience on a journey where they discover this idea for themselves?
  • How can I create an experience that allows my audience to laugh or feel emotions along the way?

Here's the bottom line...

Don't just deliver content.

Create an experience that is enjoyable, educational, and best of all, sticky.

Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #4 - Focus on Serving Speaking is not a transactional business. It's a relational business.

Want proof?

Most decision-makers won't hire you until they know, like, and trust you.

Audiences won't listen to you unless you build some level of rapport and trust with them.

And nothing will destroy your speaking career quicker than breaking trust with decision-makers and/or audiences.

So, if you want to become a better speaker, how do you build great relationships with decision-makers and audiences?

Focus on serving!

For decision-makers, be an easy speaker to work with. Make them look like a hero for hiring you. Deliver on your promises.

And for audiences, create an experience that is both enjoyable and educational. You want them to walk away from your presentation feeling better than when they walked in.

Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #3 - Get Your Reps In (AKA Practice) Practice starts with developing great content. Work hard on putting together a great presentation.

Then, once you feel like your content is solid, practice the mechanics of how to deliver a great presentation.

You can practice in front of the mirror or make a video recording of yourself...whatever works best for you.

But here's something you won't hear from most speaking coaches or trainers...

If you want to become a better speaker, do NOT practice to become more polished. Audiences can spot a fake a mile away.

Instead, practice to become a better communicator who authentically cares about what you are presenting.

You've been working hard to grow, learn, and develop as a Thought Leader in your area of expertise. So when you get the opportunity to speak to an audience, you don't want to come across as a fake, overly-polished presenter. Instead, you want to be a real person who is seen as passionate about the thoughts and ideas you are sharing.

Or, to put it another way, you want to speak from the head and the heart.

Believe it or not, this takes practice. Lots of practice.

So while you never want to wing your presentation, you also don't want to be over-polished either. It takes practice to truly be yourself as a speaker.

Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #2 - Capture Your Ideas In Tip #1 on how to become a better speaker, I challenged you to do all you can to learn, grow, and develop as a Thought Leader on your topic.

But...if you don't capture the ideas you discover, Tip #1 is useless.

Years ago, someone gave me advice that was so simple, yet it has become one of the most important habits I practice as a speaker.

Here's the advice: When You Think It, Ink It.

Whenever I find something that fits my topic, I write it down immediately.

But I don't just write it down. I make sure to save it in a place where I can find it later.

For some people, that place is a journal or notebook.

For me, it's Evernote. I have a speaking folder in Evernote where I capture all the ideas about my speaking topic that pop into my brain. (BTW, the main reason I like Evernote is it's much easier to search for what I've recorded than it is in a journal or notebook.)

But no matter what system you use, never forget... When You Think It, Ink It.

Excerpt from My Letter to Dan Miller:

Honestly, Dan, my journey to launching a business would not have been possible without you! Kathy even says that the influence Joanne and you had on our family is unbelievable. I was in a tough spot knowing that I didn’t want to keep doing the work I was doing, yet I was also clueless about how to move into something I didn’t understand or even know what it would look like. Those were exciting, tough, scary days for me professionally. Even more, they were also exciting, tough, scary days for our marriage as we tried to figure things out together all while having three young kiddos at home.

All that to say, for the past 15 years I once again had a hero and mentor in my life. And please know, when I say “hero,” I don’t mean a hero as in a Caped Crusader who can do no wrong. The truth is that all three of my heroes have been very ordinary men who did extraordinary things because they possessed qualities like stick-to-it-tiveness, grit, determination, joy, and love for life. Just average, everyday guys who I look up to because if an ordinary guy like you can do extraordinary things, then perhaps an ordinary guy like me can do the same.

So from the depth of my heart and soul, please know I am FOREVER GRATEFUL for your mentorship and friendship. Your influence in my life and work is beyond measurable. No one has impacted me more than you.

Thank You for Listening!

Show Notes: Taken from Marianne Renner's email newsletter:

Cheerleaders, Chumps, and Champs

If you’re surrounded by people who only see your brilliance, you end up with cheerleaders. Cheerleaders sing your praises, but they don’t help you move forward.

If you’re surrounded by those who only see your blind spots, you end up feeling more like a chump.

But when someone sees both your brilliance and blind spots, now you’ve got everything you need to become a champion.

Any good sports coach knows how to help the team lean into its brilliance. The coach also points out blind spots for the team to overcome.

The same is true in speaker and business coaching. If you want to become a champion in your field, you need someone who will see both your brilliance AND your blind spots.

3 Keys to Booking Virtual Training for a Higher Fee The worldwide Coronavirus Pandemic continues to negatively impact many industries and businesses, including the speaking industry. For instance, as of the recording of this podcast episode, I have had 20 speaking engagements change their venues. They have either gone virtual or been postponed. It's an epic understatement to say that the business climate for speakers is challenging. With this as background, the previous month (July 2020) has been the strongest revenue-producing July I've ever experienced in my 12-year speaking business. What's more, all the business I've booked has been virtual training. In Episode 20, I shared 3 Speaker Business Truths That Will Help You Get Booked. This episode builds Episode 20 by focusing on how to book virtual training with businesses, organizations, and associations for a higher fee.

An Inside Look at This Episode: 1) Provide Solutions

  • Do NOT market the "features" of your virutal training (e.g. Zoom training, time frame, etc.)
  • DO market the "solutions" you provide (e.g. focus on solving the problems and challenges organizations face)

2) Package Your Program Offerings

  • Do NOT simply offer standalone training
  • DO offer virtual training packages
  • DO offer to customize packages

3) Work with Multiple Organizations or Associations

  • Do NOT limit yourself to working with just one organization or association at a time
  • DO attempt to work with similar organizations or associations simultaneously
  • DO request decision-makers to recruit other organizations or associations for you
  • DO create win-win scenarios when hosting virtual training for multiple organizations or associations

Mike asked this question for the Paid to Speak Podcast: You continue to refer to speaking is a relationship business. What do you mean by that?

I share 3 important insights as to why speaking is a relationship business.

An Inside Look at This Episode: IMPORTANT: To understand how speaking in a relationship business, it's important to step out of your shoes and step into the shoes of a decision-maker.

1) The decision-maker is making a big, service-oriented purchase. This means the decision-maker wants to know, like and trust the person he or she is hiring

2) The reputation of the decision-maker is on the line.

  • If the speaker does a great job, the decision-maker looks like a hero
  • If the speaker does a bad job, the decision-maker looks like a zero
  • Never forget, decision-makers share their opinions of speakers with all the decision-makers they know
  • Kent shares a personal horror story about working with a speaker from when he was an Executive Director of a national association

3) The decision-maker wants to work with speakers who are enjoyable and easy to work with.

The question that is submitted most often for the Paid to Speak Podcast is: What is the most important marketing tool for speakers?

The answer is easy: A great presentation is your best marketing tool. As I like to say, "Nothing gets a good speaker booked more quickly than a decision-maker seeing a good speaker speak."

So, the more time you put in "on your feet" as a speaker in front of live audiences, the better.

Additionally, the sooner you can start recording videos of your presentations in front of live audiences, the better. Just remember, a bad video is worse than no video (listen to this short episode to find out exactly what I mean).

In previous episodes, I've shared honestly about how much speaking business I've lost because of the Coronavirus. In Episode 20, I share just as honestly about how much new business I've picked up because of three speaker business truths I practice in my business.

You can practice these truths in your speaker business as well. What's more, these three truths are core to the step-by-step marketing strategy we teach at the Paid to Speak Conference.

An Inside Look at This Episode: 1) Speaking is a RELATIONSHIP business

  • Marketing your speaker business is similar to dating with an eye towards marriage
  • It's about learning, caring, giving, and serving
  • It's about providing solutions even before you get hired
  • Marketing your speaker business takes time
  • Stick-to-it-tiveness is your greatest competitive advantage

2) Speaking requires NICHING (especially at first)

  • You can niche by topic
  • You can niche by industry
  • You can niche by both
  • When you niche by industry, you can get to know decision-makers and get to know when key decisions are made

3) Combining TIMING and YOUR SOLUTIONS is huge to getting booked and paid as a speaker

  • Because relationships with decision-makers are built as you provide solutions...
  • And because niching allows you to get to know when key decisions are being made...

The Killer Keynote Conference (September 22-23) and the Paid to Speak Conference (September 24-26) ARE HAPPENING. Locations have been reserved, and we're all set to go!

With that said, if something changes and we are unable to meet in a live venue, we will host each conference virtually. Additionally, you will receive a FREE PASS to a future conference.

IT'S A GREAT TIME TO START YOUR SPEAKER BUSINESS This is an OUTSTANDING time to start your speaker business.

For one, speaking is a relationship business, and it takes time to build relationships with decision-makers. Right now you have a chance to set yourself apart from other speakers simply by showing up and showing value. That's because, as I've heard from the decision-makers I know, many speakers are pushing way too hard asking, "When will you be hiring speakers again?"

Two, the speaker world is becoming less crowded. Many speakers built their entire business on live engagements and forgot to prepare for tough times. Some of these speakers are no longer in business with others soon to follow. As live events start coming back, there will be fewer speakers competing for business.

https://paidtospeakconference.com/#register

MORE PERSONAL ATTENTION I pride myself on being available during both conferences to answer your questions and to give as much personal attention as possible. But often, the number of attendees makes this challenging.

So why do I think this could be your best opportunity to attend?

Simply because registration numbers are down. This year, we opened the registration doors for both conferences on March 4. A week later we had to shut down registration. I'm not sure how many people will attend this year, but it's almost guaranteed to be significantly smaller.

That means more personal attention for you and more opportunity to gain clarity on your speaker brand and business than ever before!

EXCLUSIVE DINNER AT MARLOW'S I ran a little contest when we first opened registration for the Paid to Speak Conference. The prize is an exclusive dinner with me at Marlow's... my favorite restaurant... on Thursday evening of the Paid to Speak Conference (and I even pick up the check).

Well, there are 2 spots still left in this contest, and I'd be honored to have you join me as one of my guests.

Again, it's at Marlow's (my favorite restaurant) on Thursday evening, September 24, during the Paid to Speak Conference.

When you register, all you have to do to claim your seat is to be one of the first two people to forward your registration confirmation to me: kent@liveitforward.com.

REGISTER NOW and forward your registration confirmation to me ASAP because there are only a couple of seats left at the table.

Mapping out your speaking business requires a mindset shift. The reason it requires a shift is because of the images that pop into our minds when we hear the word map. We either think of a roadmap, or we envision pulling out our phones and asking Siri to give us directions. But neither of these scenarios work when you are starting a business.

When starting a business, it's important to envision a different type of map. You need to envision a Treasure Map.

An Inside Look at This Episode: Mapping out your speaking business is more of an art than a science. This is why envisioning a Treasure Map works better than any type of modern-day map.

Here are the two tools that will help you effectively map out your speaker business:

Tool #1: Compass

This tool includes:

  • Purpose/mission statement
  • Values
  • Personality traits
  • Talents and skills
  • Speaking topic, expertise, and solutions my services provide (this is the most important feature of your Compass to your speaker business)

Tool #2: Map

This tool includes:

  • X Marks the Spot — sharing your services and the solutions you provide (this is where you are trying to go)
  • Landmarks — industries you think will be a good fit for your services and the solutions you provide
  • Steps to get to a landmark — reaching out and connecting with decision-makers, organizations, and other speakers in the industry

Virtual training was growing in popularity before the Coronavirus, but now it is definitely here to stay. In-person keynotes and training will be back, but the validity of virtual workshops and webinars has been cemented during the past few months.

While there are similarities between speaking to an audience at a live venue and speaking via a virtual training platform like Zoom or Go To Meeting, there are also unique differences. In this episode, I share 5 quick tips that have helped me improve my virtual training presentations. My hope is they will help you as well.

An Inside Look at This Episode: Tip #1: Look at the camera

  • This is easier said than done

Tip #2: Be expressive

  • Facial expressions
  • Vocal expressions

Tip #3: Use your slides effectively

  • This is the most important tip I share
  • Image selection is vital because it keeps participants visually engaged
  • Image selection also help participants think about your teaching points on a deeper level

Tip #4: Move through your presentation at a quicker pace than your live presentations

  • This keeps participants engaged
  • Use Q&A to strategically fill in any gaps

Tip #5: Have some fun

I'm a results-oriented, driven person. What's more, a lot of the speakers I've met are the same way. Maybe you are too.

Productivity is a good thing. But, too much of a good thing can become a bad thing. The reason? A strength taken to an extreme becomes a weakness.

While productivity is important for speakers, so is finding inspiration, gaining insights, and cultivating creative ideas. And did you know that being overly productive actually hinders these things?

In Episode 16, I share how productivity can actually hurt your speaking business.

An Inside Look at This Episode: Why Too Much Productivity is a Bad Thing 1) Leaning your ladder against the wrong wall

  • Professional mistake — being productive with the wrong business idea
  • Personal mistake — being so productive that you forget to invest in what matters most

2) Inspiration, insights, and ideas are not a result of productive

  • They are the result of slowing down and pausing

3 Ways to Create Time and Space for Inspiration, Insights, and Ideas 1) Lead your life from quiet

2) Get up, get out, and get moving

3) Create your own, personal "Think Tank"

During the past several days, I've had three different conversations with people asking: "Why would anyone want to start a speaking business right now?" The idea behind this question is: If travel is shut down and no one is hiring speakers because of Coronavirus, why would anyone want to start a speaking business right now?

As the saying goes, "The best time to start a business is yesterday. The second best time is today." Well, I believe that right now is actually an amazing time to start a speaking business. Here's why...

An Inside Look at This Episode: Why This is a Great Time to Start Your Speaking Business 1) There is no pressure

2) You have more time

  • You have a longer "runway"

3) It's easier to stand out

  • The competition "true colors" come out
  • A great opportunity to serve before selling

4) The marketplace will be less crowded

What Steps You Can Take to Start Your Speaking Business 1) Pick your topic

2) Shape your brand

3) Work on your craft — develop your signature speech

4) Build your website

5) Serve decision-makers with no strings attached

Every thought you have is NOT your choice, but what you do with every thought IS your choice.

Or, as Martin Luther said, "You cannot keep birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair.”

The plethora of opinions and commentary being shared 24/7 right now is creating so much noise. But we all have a choice. While we cannot control the thoughts that pop into our heads, we can control what we do with those thoughts.

As you grow your speaking business, it's very important to carefully choose what thoughts you dwell on. In this episode, I share what I'm choosing to do with my thoughts. I hope these ideas help you choose wisely.

An Inside Look at This Episode: Here are four DOs and DON'Ts I'm practicing to help me process my life and speaking business during the Coronavirus pandemic.

1) DO stay informed. DON'T ingest.

2) DO stay engaged. DON'T debate.

3) DO stay realistically optimistic. DON'T be overly pessimistic.

4) DO live it forward. DON'T listen to all the predictions about the future (they're nothing but guesses anyway).

Don't Quit Now Near the beginning of every Paid to Speak Conference, I explain how stick-to-it-tiveness is your greatest competitive advantage as a speaker. The reason is simple: most speakers quit too soon.

The truth is getting booked and paid as a speaker isn't overly difficult. Sure, it takes time and effort. But when you learn what to do and then consistently work that system, over time that system will work for you.

The key words in the previous paragraph are consistently and over time. Most people quit too soon. Stick-to-it-tiveness, on the other hand, is all about consistency over the long haul

In this episode, I simply want to encourage you with one thought: DON'T QUIT NOW!

Speaking engagements get canceled. When it happens, the difference between getting paid to speak or not often comes down to what is written in your speaker agreement.

In Episode 9, I continue to share how the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic is impacting my speaking business and the speaking industry. An Inside Look at This Episode: In Episode 8, we looked at the customer-service side of dealing with a speaking engagement that gets canceled. In this episode, we look at the speaker-contract side of dealing with cancelations.

  • Be clear about what happens with the deposit and the timing for rescheduling the event

4) Act of God Clause

When you hear the words meeting canceled as a speaker (and you will from time to time), you have the opportunity to set yourself apart in a positive way.

In Episode 8, I continue to share how the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic is impacting my speaking business. As of this recording, I have heard the words meeting canceled for 10 speaking engagements so far. Additionally, I expect more cancelations in the weeks and months to come.

The temptation for all of us in tough times is to check out and whine. But remember, you are still in charge of your life and business. A better approach to dealing with canceled speaking engagements is to SHOW UP and SHINE for the decision-makers and meeting professionals who originally booked you.

An Inside Look at This Episode: SPECIAL WEBPAGE AND VIDEO mentioned in this episode to help you build resiliency and courage.

Any speaker can SHOW UP and SHINE when business is strong, but only the true professionals serve well in difficult circumstances. One difficult circumstance speakers face is hearing a decision-maker say the words meeting canceled.

When speaking engagements are canceled (and this will happen from time to time), it's best to focus on serving your clients exceptionally well. Here's are 4 customer service tips that will help SHOW UP and SHINE when speaking engagements are canceled:

1) Be Proactive

  • Don't wait for decision-makers and meeting professionals to reach out to you
  • Remember, when an event is canceled, decision-makers have 1,001 other details to handle

2) Be Positive

  • Speaking is a relationship business, so take the opportunity of canceled speaking engagements as a chance to build stronger relationships with meeting planners
  • Never forget, decision-makers do business with people they know, like, and trust

3) Be Different

  • Set yourself apart by how you communicate with decision-makers and meeting professionals
  • Give decision-makers options for how to move forward such as virtual summits and rescheduling
  • Be a resource and solution-provider for decision-makers

4) Be Service-Oriented

  • Remember, as a speaker, you are there to serve your client, not to have your client serve you
  • The more you serve, the more decision-makers and meeting professionals will know, like, and trust you

In this special episode, I share from my heart how to best deal with the challenges you are facing in your speaking business.

1) I share how the coronavirus pandemic is impacting my personal speaking business as well as the speaking industry as a whole

  • Speaking engagements being postponed
  • Speaking engagements being canceled
  • The impact goes far beyond our speaking businesses

2) How to build your resiliency and courage as a speaker

  • Deemphasize what you cannot control (see #3 below)
  • Focus on what you can control (see #4 below)

3) Deemphasize what you CANNOT control — the UN's

  • UNcontrollable Circumstances
  • UNexplainable Problems
  • UNchangeable Situations
  • SPECIAL WEBPAGE AND VIDEO mentioned in this episode

4) Focus on what you CAN control — E+R=O

  • E=O mindset leads to being a victim and guarantees failure
  • E+R=O mindset leads to being response-ABLE

If you want to be a speaker, you'll probably start speaking as a side hustle.

What is a side hustle? It's any kind of work you do in addition to your full-time job. It's more than a hobby because a hobby is primarily done for enjoyment. The purpose of a side hustle, in large part, is to create an additional stream of revenue.

In this episode, Kent shares 5 reasons you will love speaking as a side hustle.

An Inside Look at This Episode: Second Episode in a 3-Part Series on Starting a Side Hustle in Speaking 1) Episode 4: Why Speaking is a Better Side Hustle than Coaching

2) Episode 5: 5 More Reasons to Love Speaking as a Side Hustle

3) Episode 6: 3 Steps You Can Take to Makes Speaking a Side Hustle that Works for You

5 More Reasons to Love Speaking as a Side Hustle In Episode 4, Kent shared 5 reasons to love speaking as a side hustle. Each of the reasons in Episode 4 revolved around the Business of Speaking and was specifically about marketing. In this episode, Kent shares 5 reasons to love speaking as a side hustle that are more personal to him.

1) Bigger paychecks from the start

2) Travel

  • Variety of travel — both cool and not so cool places are fun to visit
  • Short travel — most trips are 24 to 36 hours
  • Discover fun places to visit again later with family

3) Develop content that impacts people immediately

  • Through marketing, you proactively share your content with decision-makers instead of wondering if anyone has seen your content
  • The content you develop can eventually turn into new programs, courses, and even books

4) Grow your tribe, followers, and raving fans

  • Speaking is one of the best ways to build an email list

5) Stick-to-it-tiveness is your greatest competitive advantage

A side hustle is any kind of work you do in addition to your full-time job. It's more than a hobby because a hobby is primarily done for enjoyment. The purpose of a side hustle, in large part, is to create an additional stream of revenue.

There are two primary types of side hustles:

Permanent Side Hustle: Many people who start a side hustle are perfectly content with keeping it a side hustle. These folks are not looking to move on from their full-time employment. Instead, they see their side hustle as a way to make extra money, do something they are passionate about, learn a new skill, or all of the above.

More than a Side Hustle: Other people start a side hustle for a reason beyond the ones listed above. These individuals want to replace their current employment with their side hustle.

Clearly both speaking and coaching can be excellent side hustles, whether you want to continue it as a side hustle or eventually have it replace your current job. However, Kent Julian believes speaking is the better side hustle opportunity because of the marketing advantages it provides. In this episode, Kent shares 5 reasons why speaking is a better side hustle than coaching.

An Inside Look at This Episode: First Episode in a 3-Part Series on Starting a Side Hustle in Speaking 1) Episode 4: Why Speaking is a Better Side Hustle than Coaching

2) Episode 5: 5 More Reasons to Love Speaking as a Side Hustle

3) Episode 6: Steps You Can Take to Makes Speaking a Side Hustle that Works for You

5 Reasons Speaking is a Better Side Hustle than Coaching 1) Speaking requires less complicated marketing

  • What you do NOT have to do to market your speaking services vs. what you HAVE to do to market your coaching services

2) Speaking requires B2B marketing instead of B2C marketing

  • Speaking is Business-to-Business marketing
  • Coaching is Business-to-Consumer marketing

3) Speaking allows you to market to decision-makers with money already budgeted for your speaking services

  • Speaking deals with decision-makers who have already budget money for speaking
  • Coaching deals with decision-makers who are still trying to decide if they want to budget money for coaching

4) Speaking requires 1 sale instead of 2 sales

  • Speaking deals with decision-makers who have already budget money for speaking, so you only have to sell them on you as the speaker they should hire
  • Coaching deals with decision-makers who are still trying to decide if they want to budget money for coaching, so you must first sell them on the idea of coaching and then on you as the coach they should hire

5) Speaking allows you to market One-to-Many instead of just One-to-One

  • When you speak, you can market your services to your entire audience
  • When you coach, you only have one audience member—your coaching client
